Facile Design and Synthesis of Co-Free Layered P2-Na2/3Fe1/2Mn1/2O2 as Advanced Cathode Material for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Lixiong Qian,Rui Huang,Haoran Zhang,Shengxue Yan,Shaohua Luo

Co-free Fe/Mn-based cathodes have become a popular choice for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their affordability and impressive theoretical capacity. Nevertheless, the issue of their terrible battery life and rate capability continues to be their hindrances. A set of three-factor, three-level orthogonal experiments was adopted, including the calcination temperature, calcination time, and heating rate. And two single-factor experiments were carried out to further optimize the preparation conditions. Finally, the optimal conditions were obtained as follows: the calcination temperature was 900 °C, the calcination time was 12 h, and the heating rate was 5 °C min–1. The layered oxide cathode material Co-free P2-Na2/3Fe1/2Mn1/2O2 was synthesized by the solid phase method. Under the control of the optimal conditions, the P2-Na2/3Fe1/2Mn1/2O2 cathode could yield a remarkable initial discharge specific capacity (179.3 mAh g–1, 0.1 C) and cycle stability (54.6% over 50 cycles). These findings further declared that it was feasible to design Co-free Fe/Mn-based cathode materials with superior performance, which might offer guidance for popularizing cost-effective Fe/Mn-based cathode materials in the future.

A highly-stable layered Fe/Mn-based cathode with ultralow strain for advanced sodium-ion batteries

Rui Qi,Mihai Chu,Wenguang Zhao,Ziwei Chen,Lei Liao,Shisheng Zheng,Xiping Chen,Lei Xie,Tongchao Liu,Yang Ren,Lei Jin,Khalil Amine,Feng Pan,Yinguo Xiao

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) with iron- and manganese-based cathode electrodes have exhibited great promise in the grid-scale energy storage systems , on the basis of the satisfactory theoretical capacity, as well as huge abundance, low price and non-toxicity of raw materials. However, the inferior cycle life of cathode materials originating from their poor structural stability remains a formidable challenge towards practical applications. Here, an efficient strategy of improving the structure durability is demonstrated in iron- and manganese-based cathodes by dual heteroatom doping. The as-obtained P2-type Na 0.65 Li 0.08 Cu 0.08 Fe 0.24 Mn 0.6 O 2 cathode delivers superior cyclability (88.2% capacity retention for 500 cycles at 2C), fabulous rate capability (76% capacity retention at 5C compared to 0.1C), and a useable reversible capacity of around 85 mAh g −1 at 0.1C. Through in-depth characterizations, the underlying structure-property relationship is established, revealing that the complete solid-solution reaction during cycling ensures the ultralow volume variation (as small as 0.7%) and excellent electrochemical performance. These results highlight the significance of fabricating a stable host for the design and development of advanced SIBs with long life.

Mechanochemical synthesis of Fe/Mn-based binary hexacyanoferrate for sodium-ion battery

Yuming Xi,Yangcheng Lu

In this work, a facile one-pot two-step mechanochemical technology is firstly developed to prepare Fe/Mn-based binary hexacyanoferrates (Na x (FeMn)[Fe(CN) 6 ] y , FeMnHCF)/carbon composites by coupling in-situ construction of the conductive network and solid-state reaction. It is found that construction of hierarchical conductive network is favorable to improve the rate performance and cycling stability, with an 80.5% capacity retention over 1000 cycles at 360 mA/g. Furthermore, the capacity attenuation and stabilization mechanisms are investigated by GITT, EIS , and ex-situ XRD . The capacity attenuation in the early stage can be attributed to the large charge transfer resistance, while in the latter stage the long cycling stability is ascribed to the solid solution reaction with the mitigated stress distortion during the desodiation/sodiation process. Overall, the proposed mechanochemical synthesis of Fe/Mn-based binary hexacyanoferrate shows great potential in environmental friendliness and cost-saving production as well as comprehensive product performance.

Cation–anion co-redox induced high-capacity cathode for high energy density sodium-ion batteries

Bing Zhang,Haoqing Ma,Feng Tao,Chengsifan Lei,Lei Zhang,Chaohui He,Meng Huang

Iron/manganese-based layered transition metal oxides have emerged as competitive cathode candidates for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity and naturally abundant constituent elements. Nevertheless, implementation challenges persist due to irreversible phase transformations and substantial capacity fading during cycling. Herein, we present a novel P2-type Na0.73Fe0.2Mn0.52Co0.2Mg0.05Li0.03O2 (designated as P2-NFMO-CoMgLi) cathode material characterized by coupled cationic and anionic redox. The rational doping of Li+ into transition metal (TM) sites activates the reversible oxygen redox chemistry and suppresses the Jahn–Teller distortions. In addition, the doping of Mg2+ effectively inhibits Na+ vacancy ordering in low-voltage regimes (<2.5 V), and Co2+ incorporation concurrently improves specific capacity and stabilizes the TM–O bonding networks. Consequently, the P2-NFMO-CoMgLi cathode exhibits a high capacity of 178 mA h g−1 at 20 mA g−1 and a 68% capacity retention over 150 cycles at 200 mA g−1. Ex situ XPS characterization reveals that oxygen redox processes occur and provide extra capacity at high voltage. These findings provide a fundamental understanding of voltage-induced cation–anion redox in layered oxide cathodes, advancing the rational design of high-energy-density SIB systems.

Oxygen redox chemistry in P2-Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2 cathode for high-energy Na-ion batteries

Ming-Hui Cao,Ren-Yan Li,Shi-Ya Lin,Shao-Di Zheng,Lu Ma,Sha Tan,Enyuan Hu,Zulipiya Shadike,Xiao-Qing Yang,Zheng-Wen Fu

Owing to the abundance of raw material reserves and low cost, Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have successfully gained widespread attention from academic and industrial communities in the past few decades. However, the insufficient cathode energy density is still one of the critical bottlenecks restricting the development of NIBs. Following a strategy of introducing Li+ into the transition-metal (TM) layer to enhance the oxygen redox reaction, a novel layered cathode material P2-Na0.6Li0.11Fe0.27Mn0.62O2 (NLFMO) was designed and successfully synthesized. This NLFMO cathode not only delivers a large initial reversible capacity of 207.3 mA h g−1, but also shows a good cycling performance (104.2 mA h g−1 after 80 cycles) and rate capability (126.2 mA h g−1 at 1C). The ultrahigh capacity is contributed by both cationic (Fe3+/Fe4+ and Mn3+/Mn4+) and partially reversible anionic redox (O2−/On−) reactions, revealed by in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Moreover, no detrimental P2–O2 phase transition was observed in ex situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, confirming the high structural stability during Na+ deintercalation/intercalation processes. These results provide valuable information about the high-energy density layered cathode materials based on anionic redox reactions for NIBs.

Dual-strategy of Cu-doping and O3 biphasic structure enables Fe/Mn-based layered oxide for high-performance sodium-ion batteries cathode

Zhongshuai Zhang,Yuqing Liu,Zixi Liu,Hailin Li,Yaoliang Huang,Weijian Liu,Dingshan Ruan,Xin Cai,Xiaoyuan Yu

O3-type Fe/Mn-based layered oxides are considered as the competitive cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries because of environmental friendly metal elements and low cost. However, a lower capacity, poor cycling stability and irreversible phase transitions hinder their commercial application. Herein, the Cu-doped O3 biphasic Na[Mn 0.6 Fe 0.4 ] (1- x ) Cu x O 2 (NFMCu- x ) layered oxides are successfully synthesized by high temperature calcination using Fe/Mn-based Prussian blue analogues as precursor. The results indicate that the different stoichiometric of Cu 2+ substitution in P2 NaMn 0.6 Fe 0.4 O 2 can cause the transformation of P2 phase to O3 monophase or O3 biphase. The NFMCu- x samples exhibit O3 monophase at x  = 0.1, 0.15, while O3 biphase coexists in the compound at x  = 0.2, 0.25, and 0.3. Benefiting from the synergetic effect of Cu-doping and O3 biphasic structure, the optimized O3 biphasic NaMn 0.48 Fe 0.32 Cu 0.2 O 2 exhibits a high Na  +   diffusion coefficient and an excellent sodium storage performance with a high discharge specific capacity of 103.76 mAh g −1 at 24 mA g −1 and good capacity retention of 82.9% after 100 cycles. Moreover, Cu-doped O3 biphasic NaMn 0.48 Fe 0.32 Cu 0.2 O 2 features an excellent air stability. Thus, this work proposes a strategy in development of O3 Fe/Mn-based layered oxide as high-performance cathode materials for sodium-ion batteries.

Investigation of internal action to enhance structural stability and electrochemical performance of K+/Mg2+ co-doped cathodes in high voltage environments utilizing dual coordination

Xuantian Feng,Minjie Hou,Bowen Xu,Yiyong Zhang,Da Zhang,Yun Zeng,Yong Lei,Feng Liang

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) are emerging as a promising alternative for large-scale energy storage, particularly in grid applications. Within the array of potential cathode materials, Fe/Mn-based layered oxides are notable for their advantageous theoretical specific capacity, economic viability, and environmental sustainability. Nevertheless, the practical application of Fe/Mn-based layered oxides is constrained by their suboptimal cycle performance and rate capability during actual charging and discharging. Ion doping is an effective approach for addressing the aforementioned issues. In this context, we have successfully developed a novel K + and Mg 2+ co-doped P2-Na 0.7 Fe 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 2 cathode to address these challenges. By doping with 0.05 K + and 0.2 Mg 2+ , the cathode demonstrated excellent cycling stability, retaining 95% of its capacity after 50 cycles at 0.2C, whereas the undoped material retained only 59.7%. Even within a wider voltage range, the co-doped cathode retained 88% of its capacity after 100 cycles at 1C. This work integrated Mg 2+ to activate oxygen redox reactions in Fe/Mn-based layered cathodes, thereby promoting a reversible hybrid redox process involving both anions and cations. Building on the Mg doping, larger K + ions were introduced into the edge-sharing Na + sites, enhancing the material's cyclic stability and expanding the interplanar distance. The significant improvement of Na + diffusion coefficient by K + /Mg 2+ co-doping has been further confirmed via the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT). The study emphasizes the importance of co-doping with different coordination environments in future material design, aiming to achieve high operating voltage and energy density.
