High-pressure synthesis of trimetal phosphide CFNP as highly efficient bifunctional catalyst for alkaline water splitting

Wenfeng Peng,Zhengxing Lv,Wenju Zhou,Bingmin Yan,Shijing Zhao,Lailei Wu,Junshuang Zhou,Huiyang Gou

Creating highly efficient bifunctional transition metal phosphide catalysts for electrochemical water splitting through cost-effective and universal methods remains an elusive challenge. Here we introduce a universal high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) technique that readily produce phase-pure TMPs, including FeNiP, CoNiP, and Fe 2/3 Co 2/3 Ni 2/3 P (CFNP), which can serve as an ideal model for investigating the relationship between electrocatalytic activity, structure, and chemical composition. The crystal structure of obtained CFNP has been carefully determined for the first time by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) and XAS simulations. In the structure of CFNP, iron atoms form an MP4 tetrahedron with Co atoms and a 5-coordination pyramid with Ni atoms. This arrangement synergistically induces an electron-deficient state in the metals and an electron-rich state in phosphorus, enhancing CFNP/NF’s bifunctional catalytic effectiveness, achieving low overpotentials of 92 mV and 239 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 in 1 M KOH environment for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), respectively. Moreover, an integrated electrolyzer using CFNP/NF as both electrode components can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 at 1.536 V, showcasing a catalytic activity for overall water splitting comparable to those of phosphide-based electrocatalysts. The HTPH technique opens new possibility for exploring pure-phase multimetallics and high-entropy phosphides as potential multifunctional materials for potential applications.

Electrically driven phosphorus dissolution from iron-nickel phosphate surfaces exposing highly active sites for oxygen evolution reaction

Ya Liu,Jinghui Zhu,Liang Yu,Yubin Zhao,Xing Cao,Shoujing Wei,Junrong Zeng,Huanhui Chen,Ziqian Lu,Binyi Chen,Gaowei Zhang,Liubiao Zhong,Yejun Qiu

The enhancement of catalytic activity can be achieved by removing non-active components from the surface of catalyst materials, thereby increasing the accessibility of active sites. In this study, an electrically driven method is described for the removal of non-active phosphorus (P) to optimize the surface composition of iron-nickel phosphide (denoted as P-O-NFF), resulting in the exposure of more active Fe–Ni sites for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimized P-O-NFF electrode exhibits exceptional OER catalytic activity, with an overpotential of 217 mV at 10 mA cm −2 . Furthermore, it demonstrates significant stability, maintaining a 100 % voltage retention rate after 300 h at a high current density of 200 mA cm −2 . The superior performance can be attributed to the disruption of the original crystalline lattice during the electrically driven P dissolution, which leads to the formation of amorphous Fe–Ni hydroxide/oxyhydroxide that enhances active sites exposure. This work offers a simple and effective method for controlling the surface component of catalysts to enhance their catalytic performance, which has the potential to advance industrial water electrolysis technology.

Leaching-Reconstruction Engineering of Anions on Ferronickel Phosphate Promotes the Enhancement of the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Xu Zhang,Zhihao Wang,Shuang Liu,Meiting Lu,Yuanyuan Wang,Bianlin Luo,Tong Shen,Zhiyu Ren,Zhimin Chen,Bo Liu

Electrochemical reconstruction typically generates powerful active sites for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, engineering effective reconstruction strategies to manipulate the in situ formation of desired catalytically active surfaces, generate powerful active sites, and enhance their catalytic performance remains a challenge. Herein, leveraging the oxidation-potential-assisted precipitation etching, a heterostructure of NiFeOOH/NiFe phosphate was meticulously engineered to achieve highly efficient OER. During the electrochemical reconstruction, the leaching of inactive PO43– species in NiFe phosphate facilitates the exposure of more Ni and/or Fe species and creates more pores, thereby contributing to the formation of a NiFeOOH layer on the surface of NiFe phosphate. The resultant NiFeOOH/NiFe phosphate exhibits excellent OER activity with an overpotential of 205 mV at 50 mA cm–2 in an alkaline electrolyte. The theoretical calculations reveal that the heterostructure of NiFeOOH/NiFe phosphate weakens the thermodynamic barrier from *O to *OOH, thus enhancing the OER activity. The present proof-of-concept study introduces a leaching engineering approach to facilitate further exploration and development of highly efficient energy-related applications.

The Construction of Hydrangea-like Vanadium-Doped Iron Nickel Phosphide as an Enhanced Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Overall Water Splitting

Na Suo,Cheng Chen,Xinqi Han,Xingquan He,Zhiyu Dou,Zihan Lin,Lili Cui,Jinbao Xiang

The morphology and electronic structure dual modulation is an effective strategy to optimize the performance of the electrocatalysts. Herein, a hydrangea-like vanadium-doped FeNi2P hybrid material loaded on nickel foam (V-FeNi2P/NF) is constructed by a facile hydrothermal reaction followed by phosphorization for the first time. The introduction of foreign V effectively modulates the electronic structure of Ni and leads to hydrangea-like morphology. The optimized V-FeNi2P/NF with open-ended sites shows large electrochemically active surface area. Not surprisingly, the V-FeNi2P/NF displays remarkable electrocatalytic performances for both hydrogen evolution (HER) and oxygen evolution (OER) reactions in 1.0 M KOH solution, with reduced overpotentials of 70 and 200 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2 for HER and OER, respectively. The assembled water electrolyzer using V-FeNi2P/NF as the anode and cathode electrodes only needs a low cell voltage of 1.57 V to deliver 10 mA cm–2 and shows excellent long-term stability and recoverability.

Bimetallic iron-nickel phosphide as efficient peroxymonosulfate activator for tetracycline hydrochloride degradation: Performance and mechanism

Xiaofang Pan,Jiaxing Pu,Lingrui Zhang,Xiaobo Gong,Xuan Luo,Lu Fan

Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes with (SR-AOPs) are widely employed to degrade organic pollutants due to their high efficiency, cost-effectiveness and safety. In this study, a highly active and stable FeNiP was successfully prepared by reduction and heat treatment. FeNiP exhibited high performance of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for tetracycline hydrochloride (TC) removal. Over a wide pH range, an impressive TC degaradation efficiency 97.86% was achieved within 60 min employing 0.1 g/L FeNiP and 0.2 g/L PMS at room temperature. Both free radicals of SO 4 · - , ·OH, ·O 2 − and non-free radicals of 1 O 2 participated the TC degradation in the FeNiP/PMS system. The PMS activation ability was greatly enhanced by the cycling between Ni and Fe bimetal, and the active site regeneration was achieved due to the existence of the negatively charged P n− . Moreover, the FeNiP/PMS system exhibited substantial TC degradation levels in both simulated real-world disturbance scenarios and practical water tests. Cycling experiments further affirmed the robust stability of FeNiP catalyst, demonstrating sustained degradation efficiency of approximately 80% even after four cycles. These findings illuminate its promising potential across natural water bodies, presenting an innovative catalyst construction approach for PMS activation in the degradation of antibiotic pollutants.

Porphyrinic Metal–Organic Framework-Templated Fe–Ni–P/Reduced Graphene Oxide for Efficient Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Xinzuo Fang,Long Jiao,Rui Zhang,Hai-Long Jiang

The sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) hampers the H2 production by H2O electrolysis, and it is very important for the development of highly efficient and low-priced OER catalysts. Herein, a representative metalloporphyrinic MOF, PCN-600-Ni, integrated with graphene oxide (GO), serves as an ideal precursor and template to afford bimetallic iron–nickel phosphide/reduced graphene oxide composite (denoted as Fe–Ni–P/rGO-T; T represents pyrolysis temperature) via pyrolysis and subsequent phosphidation process. Thanks to the highly porous structure, the synergetic effect of Fe and Ni elements in bimetallic phosphide, and the good conductivity endowed by rGO, the optimized Fe–Ni–P/rGO-400 exhibits remarkable OER activity in 1 M KOH solution, affording an extremely low overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA/cm2, which is far superior to the commercial IrO2 and among the best in all non-noble metal-based electrocatalysts.

Controllable preparation of nickel phosphide using iron and cobalt as electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline media

M. Wang,Y. Chen,T. Li

Electrocatalytic water splitting is a promising method for hydrogen production, so the development of the efficient and stable catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is quite important in alkaline media. In this study, cobalt-iron-nickel phosphide nanoparticles (CoFeNiP/NF) were prepared on the nickel foam substrate, where Ni 12 P 5 can be controllably generated by introducing Co dopants while only Ni 3 P was observed without adding Co. Also, the introduction of Fe and Co metals not only changed the phase of Nickel phosphide but also modified the morphology of material, which synergistically improve the HER performance. Thus, CoFeNiP/NF displays good electrocatalytic activity and durability for HER in alkaline media (1 M KOH), exhibiting a low onset overpotential of 27 mV and overpotential of 104 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA/cm 2 . The introduction of other metal ions not only changed the phase of Nickel phosphide but also modified the morphology of material, which synergistically improve the HER performance. This study not only provides a strategy for controllable preparation of nickel phosphides but also investigates structure/component design for transition metal phosphides electrocatalysts .

Amorphous Fe–Ni–P–B–O Nanocages as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Hao Ren,Xiaoli Sun,Chengfeng Du,Jin Zhao,Daobin Liu,Wei Fang,Sonal Kumar,Rodney Chua,Shize Meng,Pinit Kidkhunthod,Li Song,Shuiqing Li,Srinivasan Madhavi,Qingyu Yan

Electrocatalysts are one of the most important parts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to overcome the sluggish kinetics. Herein, amorphous Fe–Ni–P–B–O (FNPBO) nanocages as efficient OER catalysts are synthesized by a simple low-cost and scalable method at room temperature. The samples are chemically stable, in clear contrast to reported unstable or even pyrophoric boride samples. The Fe/Ni ratio of the FNPBO nanocages can be continuously adjusted to optimize the OER catalytic performance. The FNPBO nanocages composed of multicomponent elements can weaken the metal–metal bonds, thus rearranging the electron density around the catalytic metal atom centers and reducing the energy barrier for intermediate formation. Hence the optimized FNPBO (Fe6.4Ni16.1P12.9B4.3O60.2) catalyst shows superior intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for OER. The low overpotential to afford the current density of 10 mA cm–2 (236 mV), the small Tafel slope (39 mV dec–1), and the high specific current density (26.44 mA cm–2) at a given overpotential of 300 mV make a sharp contrast to state-of-the-art RuO2 (327 mV, 136 mV dec–1, and 0.028 mA cm–2, respectively).

Heterogeneous Fe-Ni-P nanosheet arrays as a potential anode for sodium ion batteries

Guohao Chen,Lin Gao,Lulu Zhang,Xuelin Yang

Transition metal phosphates (TMPs) are considered as promising anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) due to their high theoretical capacity (up to 1000 mAh g −1 ) and low cost. However, the poor electrochemical reaction kinetics and large volume expansion of TMPs are not conducive to practical applications in SIBs. In view of this, a kind of self-supported iron nickel phosphide (Fe-Ni-P) composite nanosheet arrays are obtained by reasonable hydrothermal reaction and phosphidation process. The nanosheet arrays construction can significantly release the mechanical strain and promote electrochemical reaction kinetics. Furthermore, the volume expansion can be largely alleviated by the synergistic effect of Fe 2 P and Ni 2 P. Benefiting from the unique design, the robust Fe-Ni-P arrays manifest remarkable Na + storage capability. The Fe-Ni-P nanosheet arrays exhibit a large discharge capacity of 300.9 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1 A g −1 . And there is a reversible capacity of 201.7 mAh g −1 can be maintained without obvious capacity loss after 200 cycles at 0.5 A g −1 in SIBs.
