New platinum(II) one-armed Schiff base complexes for blue and orange PHOLEDs applications

Jie Zhang,Xunjin Zhu,Aiguo Zhong,Wenping Jia,Fengshou Wu,Dan Li,Hongbo Tong,Chenglin Wu,Wenyuan Tang,Ping Zhang,Lei Wang,Deman Han

The condensation of different groups substituted salicylaldehydes with aniline and 2,4,5-trifluoroaniline, afforded five one-armed Schiff base ligands HL 1 , HL 2 , HL 3 , HL 4 and HL 5 . And their platinum(II) complexes Pt(L 1 ) 2 , Pt(L 2 ) 2 , Pt(L 3 ) 2 , Pt(L 4 ) 2 , Pt(L 5 ) 2 and PtL 5 · DMSO were prepared through the metallation of ligands with K 2 PtCl 4 . All ligands and complexes were characterized by 1 H NMR, infrared spectroscopy , mass spectrometry and single crystal X-ray diffraction. And their thermal stability, photophysical properties, and electrochemical behaviors were investigated in detail. Using these complexes as phosphorescent emitting materials, blue to orange light-emitting devices were fabricated with moderate efficiencies. The maximum current efficiency, power efficiency, and brightness for the 3.0 wt % Pt(L 3 ) 2 doped OLED are 1.12 cd A −1 , 0.62 l m W −1 and 1521 cd m −2 , respectively. Given the synthetic simplicity and ease of structural variation, the results here indicate that these platinum(II) Schiff base complexes are good candidates for phosphorescent OLEDs.

Broad-Band N∧N Pt(II) Bisacetylide Visible Light Harvesting Complex with Heteroleptic Bodipy Acetylide Ligands

Fangfang Zhong,Ahmet Karatay,Liang Zhao,Jianzhang Zhao,Cheng He,Caishun Zhang,Halime Gul Yaglioglu,Ayhan Elmali,Betül Küçüköz,Mustafa Hayvali

Pt(II) dbbpy bisacetylide (dbbpy = 4,4′-di(tert-butyl)-2,2′-bipyridine) complex (Pt-1) with two different Bodipy ligands was prepared with the goal to attain broad-band visible light absorbing, efficient funneling of the photoexcitation energy (via resonance energy transfer, RET) to the energy acceptor and high triplet formation quantum yields. Construction of the above-mentioned molecular structural motif is challenging because two different arylacetylide ligands are incorporated in the complex; normally two homoleptic acetylide ligands were used for this kind of N∧N Pt(II) complexes. A reference complex with trans bis(tributylphosphine) Pt(II) bisacetylide protocol (Pt-4) was prepared for comparison of the photophysical properties. The two different Bodipy ligands in Pt-1 and Pt-4 constitute singlet/triplet energy donor/acceptor, as a result the harvested photoexcitation energy can be funneled to the triplet state confined on one of the two Bodipy ligands. The photophysical properties of the complexes were studied with steady state UV–vis absorption and luminescence spectroscopies, femto- and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopies, cyclic voltammetry, as well as DFT/TDDFT calculations. Fluorescence/phosphorescence dual emission were observed for the complex. The ultrafast intramolecular singlet/triplet energy transfer in Pt-1 was confirmed by the transient absorption spectroscopy (kFRET = 2.6 × 1011 s–1, ΦFRET = 87.1%) followed by an intersystem crossing (kISC = 1.9 × 1010 s–1), and the triplet state lifetime (τT) is 54.1 μs. The reference complex Pt-4 shows drastically different kinetics with kFRET = 6.9 × 1010 s–1, ΦFRET = 81.0%, kISC = 5.83 × 109 s–1, and τT = 147.9 μs. Different singlet oxygen (1O2) quantum yields (ΦΔ = 75% and 70%) and triplet state quantum yields (ΦT = 91% and 69%, respectively) were observed for complexes Pt-1 and Pt-4.

Regulation of the Switchable Luminescence of Tridentate Platinum(II) Complexes by Photoisomerization

Li Yongguang,Fei Yuexuan,Sun Hongcheng,Yu Shuangjiang,Liu Junqiu

Organoplatinum (II) complexes are promising candidates for the construction of smart supramolecular materials due to their unique flat structures. This accompanied by intriguing luminescent properties, prompts the molecules to aggregate after external stimuli. Nevertheless, the utilization of photo-responsive subunits to modulate their assemble behaviors and functions are still rarely explored. In this work, azobenzene (azo)-appended tridentate platinum (II) complexes with different linkers have been designed and synthesized. The intermolecular hydrogen bonding, π-π stacking, and metal-metal interactions were finely controlled through the tiny alteration of the linkers, which was found to play a vital role in self-assembly, and photophysical and photoisomerization properties. Some of them exhibited dual emission bands originating from metal-perturbed triplet intraligand (3IL) and metal-metal to ligand charge transfer (3MMLCT) excited states due to the different intermolecular interactions. Based on this, the manipulation of switchable luminescence as well as the controllable morphologies have been realized by photoisomerization.

Novel Platinum(II) Complex-based Luminescent Probe for Detection of Hypochlorite in Cancer Cells

Jingjie Tang,Dongting Huang,Fei Meng,Peng Li,Fang Peng,Junsheng Huang

Hypochlorite (ClO⁻) is of great importance either for the metabolism of living organisms or as disinfectant in daily life. However, improper concentration levels of ClO⁻ lead to serious health problems including erythrocyte damage, cardiovascular problems, neuron degeneration, lung/kidney injury and cancer. Therefore, a sensitive and selective detection method is required for the visualization and measurement of ClO⁻. In this work, a novel platinum(II) complex-based luminescent probe Pt-CHO was synthesized and utilized to detect ClO⁻. This “turn-off” probe exhibits high sensitivity, excellent selectivity, good pH stability, low limit of detection and instantaneous response ability. Moreover, the luminescent response is caused by the oxidation of aldehyde into carboxyl groups combined with the coordination of hydroxyl groups at the Pt center, which is rarely reported. The cell imaging of HeLa cells proved the considerable potential of the probe for ClO⁻ imaging in living cells.

Intramolecular hydroamidation of bipyridine platinum(II) acetylide complexes: Synthesis, structures, and properties of bipyridine platinum(II) indolyl complexes

Ying-Xian Li,Liu-Ping Yang,Meng Yang,Ji-Jun Jiang,Gao-Feng Liu,Hsiu-Yi Chao

Three bipyridine platinum(II) complexes Pt-2-Pt-4 bearing indolyl ligand(s) have been synthesized through the hydroamidation of acetylide ligand(s) of Pt-1 . The structures of Pt-1-Pt-4 were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The photophysical properties of these structurally related complexes Pt-1-Pt-4 have been studied. Pt-1-Pt-4 in the solid state show emission peaks at 525–570 nm, which are assigned as the mixture of 3 LLCT and 3 MLCT excited states. Solids Pt-1-Pt-4 exhibit mechanoluminescence, and Pt-4G can be recovered back to solids Pt-4 upon adding a few drops of diethyl ether. This study provides a new way to synthesize bipyridine platinum(II) indolyl complexes using intramolecular hydroamidation of alkynyl moieties.

Novel recognition mechanism based on oxidative addition of Pt(II) complex-based luminescent probes for hypochlorite ion detection

Jingjie Tang,Guoxun Zhu,Peng Li,Pingjun Zhang,Fang Peng,Fei Meng

Platinum(II) complexes are the most commonly used anticancer drugs and potential optical materials, but the detectability of Pt(II) complex-based probes is seldom reported. In our previous work, a tetradentate Pt(II) complex Pt-CHO was utilised as a ‘turn-off’ probe to detect ClO− and image cancer cells. However, the recognition mechanism has not been completely clarified and there are still doubts. In this work, three Pt(II) complexes, Pt-H, Pt-CHO and Pt-COOH, were developed to elucidate the mechanism of this class of complexes and refine their property studies. As a result, the UV–visible absorption and luminescence emission experiments, as well as the mass spectrum, proved that the oxidation of Pt(II) to Pt(IV) was the real reason for luminescence quenching, which has nothing to do with aldehyde groups. This first reported mechanism introduces a new type of ClO− probe based on Pt(II) complexes, thereby expanding the application fields of platinum complexes. Moreover, the quantum yield measurements, the effect of biomolecules and reversibility were studied to improve the properties of the probes. Theoretical calculations were used to gain an in-depth understanding of optical characteristics and related mechanisms. The cell imaging of RAW264.7 cells under endogenous ClO− proved the potential of the probes in bioimaging.

Precise counter anion modulation of the self-assembly behavior-endowed ultrasensitive and specific dual-mode visualization of nitrate

Honghong Li,Jiguang Li,Baiyi Zu,Yuwan Du,Yuhong Su,Xincun Dou

Pt(II) polypyridine complex-based probe exhibits promising performance in anion detection by the change of the absorption and emission properties based on supramolecular self-assembly. However, whether one can develop a modulation strategy of the counter anion to boost the detection sensitivity and anti-interference capability of the Pt(II) complex-based probe remains a big challenge. Here, an effective modulation strategy was proposed by precisely regulating the interaction energy through adjusting the type of the counter anions, and a series of probes have been synthesized by counter anion (X = Cl - , ClO 4 - , PF 6 - ) exchange in [Pt(tpy)Cl]·X (tpy=2,2′:6′,2′’-terpyridine), and thus the colorimetric-luminescence dual-mode detection toward nitrate was achieved. The optimal [Pt(tpy)Cl]·Cl probe shows superior nitrate detection performance including a limit of detection (LOD) (8.68 nM), rapid response (<0.5 s), an excellent selectivity and anti-interference capability even facing 14 common anions. Moreover, a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) sponge-based sensing chip loaded with the probe enables the ultra-sensitive detection of nitrate particles with an ultralow detection limit of 7.6 pg, and it was further integrated into a detection pen for the accurate recognition of nitrate particles in real scenarios. The proposed counter-anion modulation strategy is expected to start a new frontier for the exploration of novel Pt(II) complex-based probes.

Alkynylplatinum(II) Terpyridine System Coupled with Rhodamine Derivative: Interplay of Aggregation, Deaggregation, and Ring-Opening Processes for Ratiometric Luminescence Sensing

Yukun Cheng,Ling Li,Fangfang Wei,Keith Man-Chung Wong

The synthesis and characterization of a platinum(II) terpyridine system tethered with a latent organic dye of rhodamine derivative as colorimetric and luminescent sensory moiety is reported to show selective Hg2+ ion sensing behavior. The interplay of aggregation/deaggregation behavior of the alkynylplatinum(II) terpyridine complex and the ring-opening process of rhodamine derivative was investigated. The spectral change of aggregation near-infrared emission at 800 nm and rhodamine fluorescence at 585 nm provides a possible ratiometric luminescence measurement. Morphological studies from transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy images showing nanospherical structures confirmed the aggregation in the absence of Hg2+ ion.

Ping-Pong Energy Transfer in a Boron Dipyrromethane Containing Pt(II)–Schiff Base Complex: Synthesis, Photophysical Studies, and Anti-Stokes Shift Increase in Triplet–Triplet Annihilation Upconversion

Syed S. Razi,Yun Hee Koo,Woojae Kim,Wenbo Yang,Zhijia Wang,Habtom Gobeze,Francis D’Souza,Jianzhang Zhao,Dongho Kim

A boron dipyrromethane (BDP)-containing Pt(II)–Schiff base complex (Pt-BDP), showing ping-pong singlet–triplet energy transfer, was synthesized, and the detailed photophysical properties were investigated using various steady-state and time-resolved transient spectroscopies. Femtosecond/nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopies demonstrated that, upon selective excitation of the BDP unit in Pt-BDP at 490 nm, Förster resonance energy transfer from the BDP unit to the Pt(II) coordination center occurred (6.7 ps), accompanied by an ultrafast intersystem crossing at the Pt(II) coordination center (<1 ps) and triplet–triplet energy transfer back to the BDP moiety (148 ps). These processes generated a triplet state localized at BDP, and the lifetime was 103.2 μs, much longer than the triplet-state lifetime of Pt-Ph (3.5 μs), a complex without the BDP moiety. Finally, Pt-BDP was used as a triplet photosensitizer for triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) upconversion through selective excitation of the BDP unit or the Pt(II) coordination center at lower excitation energy. An upconversion quantum yield of up to 10% was observed with selective excitation of the BDP moiety, and a large anti-Stokes shift of 0.65 eV was observed upon excitation of the lower-energy band of the Pt(II) coordination center. We propose that using triplet photosensitizers with the ping-pong energy-transfer process may become a useful method for increasing the anti-Stokes shift of TTA upconversion.

Platinum (II)-coordinated Portulaca oleracea polysaccharides as metal-drug based polymers for anticancer study

Qianqian Han,Lirong Huang,Ying Wang,Shixin Sun,Hao Huang,Fei Li,Fangtian Wang,Ligen Chen,Hongmei Zhang,Yanqing Wang

Novel polysaccharide-platinum conjugated polymers bearing alendronate on Portulaca oleracea polysaccharides (PPS) were designed and synthesized. Their chemical structures and properties were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1 H NMR and 31 P NMR spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), UV–vis spectrophotometer (UV–vis) and other analysis methods. The results demonstrated that alendronate can be used as the linker of Portulaca oleracea polysaccharides and platinum compounds. Portulaca oleracea polysaccharides-alendronate (PPS-ALN) conjugates exhibited stronger antioxidant ability than PPS. The cytotoxicity assay to cancer cells was tested in vitro, and the Portulaca oleracea polysaccharides-alendronate-platinum (PPS-ALN-Pt) conjugates strongly inhibited the proliferation of cancer cells than PPS and PPS-ALN. The evaluation of complexes affinity toward supercoiled plasmid DNA, displayed a high DNA interaction. Interestingly, the platinum conjugates displayed immunological competence in HeLa cells by cellular immunofluorescence assay. Besides, the cellular platinum accumulation of PPS-ALN-Pt conjugates was higher than that of cisplatin in HeLa cells, implying that the polysaccharide-platinum conjugated polymers might have a synergistically therapeutic application in metal anticancer drug delivery.

Yingpeng Huo,Jiwen Hu,Shudong Lin,Xingming Ju,Yanlong Wei,Zhenzhu Huang,Yangfei Hu,Yuanyuan Tu

Reported herein is an easy-to-prepare novel heterogeneous catalyst of platinum complexes bearing binary ligands of bidentate naphthalenolimine and cyclo-1,5-octadiene that are anchored onto mesoporous silica SBA-15. The presence of the binary ligands not only stabilized the platinum, but also enabled the platinum atoms to form nanoclusters with diameters of ca 1 nm, and led to high platinum loading (8.69 wt%). Moreover, the platinum catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity towards hydrosilylation of terminal alkenes and styrene with silanes under mild and solvent-free conditions, with excellent regioselectivity.

Constructing ultrasensitive biosensor for biomarker detection of early diseases through G-quadruplex probe coupled with aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence platinum(II) complexes

Tingyi Huang,Li Tan,Wenyi Zhang,Ying Ma,Ziqi Lian,Benlin Hong,Jianqiang Hu

Highly sensitive and simple biomarker determination is crucial for diagnosis and treatment of early diseases. However, it remains a tremendous challenge for rapid, accurate and real time detection of biomarkers at the early stage of diseases due to its extremely low content and serious interference. Herein, we have successfully constructed an ultrasensitive electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensor based on 2,6-bis(2-benzimidazolyl)pyridine platinum(II) (BZIMPY-Pt) complexes with aggregation-induced electrochemiluminescence (AIECL) phenomenon, which was utilized to detect miRNA-155 at early diseases. The BZIMPY-Pt complexes with AIECL properties and had high affinity with G-quadruplex DNA compared to other square planar pyridyl Pt(II) complexes, which exhibited 13-fold enhancements in ECL intensity in the aggregated state. The constructed biosensor possessed high sensitivity, wide linear range (1 fM-10 nM), low limit of detection (∼0.22 fM), high selectivity and good stability and reproducibility for miRNA-155 detection. The ECL biosensor was successfully applied to determine miRNA-155 in the serum samples of early-stage diagnose. This AIECL-based strategy overcomes traditional limitations in low-abundance biomarker analysis through synergistic signal amplification and background suppression mechanisms, which is potential for clinical diagnosis of early diseases.
