Hollow porous nanoparticles with Pt skin on a Ag–Pt alloy structure as a highly active electrocatalyst for the oxygen reduction reaction

Tao Fu,Jun Fang,Chunsheng Wang,Jinbao Zhao

Aiming to reduce the dosage of the noble metal Pt and improve the catalytic activity of the catalyst in fuel cells, hollow porous Ag–Pt alloy nanoparticles with Pt coating are prepared via a facile controlled galvanic replacement reaction. Ag is used as the substrate to build a hollow porous structure and alloyed with Pt to minimize the tensile effect of the Ag on the deposited Pt skin which would significantly lower the catalytic performance of the Ag–Pt bimetallic catalyst. This hollow porous Ag/Pt bimetallic catalyst exhibits a long catalytic durability and a mass activity of 0.438 A mgPt−1 at 0.9 V (vs. RHE) towards the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which is ca. 3 times higher than that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The significant enhancement over the state-of-the-art Pt catalysts can be attributed to (1) the high surface area of the nanoparticles, (2) the more suitable d-band center of the Pt skin deposited on the Ag–Pt alloy substrate, and (3) the high thermal stability of the Ag–Pt alloy. Therefore, this work provides a new strategy for designing high-performance catalysts with low cost. In addition, the synthetic chemistry involved can possibly be extended for fabricating versatile catalysts with a similar structure.

The ultra-high oxygen evolution activity of Fe modified NiPt alloy assisted by Pt pre-oxidation in alkaline electrolyte

Min Li,Chenlong Zhang,Jie Dou,Chi Jiang,Yingli Wang,Qiyao Guo,Xinyu Zhang,Bin Dong,Qunwei Tang

Constructing ultra-high activity, highly efficient and robust oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, especially at large current density, plays a key role in the development of the electrolytic water industry but remains challenging. Highly dispersed alloy compound with large electrolyte contact area and excellent internal conductivity is considered as a kind of ideal candidate. Here, we have rationally designed and synthesized a nickel-platinum alloy with octahedral structure loaded on the surface of the carbon layer (NiPt/C). Under the in-situ modulation of the iron-containing electrolyte, the Fe modified NiPt/C catalyst displays an amazing OER activity in 1 M KOH, and only requires low overpotentials of 183 and 242 mV to reach 100 and 1000 mA cm −2 , respectively. The comprehensive characterization analysis and property measurements reveal that the pre-oxidation of Pt at OER potential contribute to the rapid production of nickel hydroxide, thus promoting the deposition of more iron active sites on its surface. Moreover, the Pt/C/CP (−) //NiPt/C/CP (+) couple embedded in anion-exchange membrane water electrolyser also displays a low cell voltage of 2.03 V at 1000 mA cm −2 with significant electrochemical stability, which endows it a great potential in the field of hydrogen production and electrochemical energy storage.

Selective electrocatalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene over copper-platinum alloying catalysts: Experimental and theoretical studies

Meng Jin,Yanyan Liu,Xian Zhang,Jialu Wang,Shengbo Zhang,Guozhong Wang,Yunxia Zhang,Huajie Yin,Haimin Zhang,Huijun Zhao

We report ultrafine Cu x Pt y alloying nanoparticles anchored on carbon black (Cu x Pt y /C) for selective electrocatalytic hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (Ph-NO 2 ) at ambient conditions. The experimental and theoretical studies reveal that as electrocatalyst, the optimal Cu 3 Pt/C with adjusted electronic structure can effectively facilitate the adsorption and activation of Ph-NO 2 . The results indicate that the acidic media is favorable for the production of aminobenzene irrelevant to the applied potential, while the electrocatalytic hydrogenation products are highly dependent on the reduction potential in the alkaline media. As a result, the Cu 3 Pt/C can afford almost 100 % conversion of Ph-NO 2 into azoxybenzene with ∼99 % selectivity at 0.3 V (vs. RHE) and aminobenzene with ∼99 % selectivity at -0.3 V (vs. RHE) in 1.0 M KOH, respectively. The theoretical calculations provide a comprehensive understanding of the selective electrocatalytic hydrogenation mechanisms of Ph-NO 2 relative to electrolyte pH and applied potential, matched well with the experimental results.

PtMn/PtCo alloy nanofascicles: robust electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction under both acidic and alkaline conditions

Jinwu Hu,Caihong Fang,Xiaomin Jiang,Deliang Zhang,Zhiqing Cui

In this study, we synthesized PtM (M = Mn and Co) alloy nanofascicles by a bundle of ultrathin nanowires with a diameter of ∼2.0 nm. Furthermore, the compositions of alloys were tunable. These nanofascicles exhibited significantly enhanced electrocatalytic activity due to their alloy nature, ultrathin size, and attractive morphological features. Noticeably, PtM electrocatalysts exhibited superior HER performances not only in the acidic but also in alkaline conditions when the electrocatalysts were deposited on a carbon paper. Pt8Co demonstrates the smallest η10 value of 26.1 mV under acidic conditions, which is significantly lower than that of Pt/C (63.4 mV). Under alkaline conditions, the η10 of Pt8Co is 47.2 mV, which is substantially lower than that of commercial Pt/C (187.9 mV). Pt6Mn shows the lower η10 values of 39.0 and 67.5 mV under acidic and alkaline conditions, respectively. In addition, PtM electrocatalysts exhibit excellent long-term durability under alkaline conditions.

The fabrication composite material of bimetallic micro/nanostructured palladium–platinum alloy and graphene on nickel foam for the enhancement of electrocatalytic activity

Xiuqi Dong,Shixiang Lu,Wenguo Xu,Shuguang Li

A composite of bimetallic micro/nanostructured palladium–platinum (Pd–Pt) alloy, reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and polydopamine (PDA) on three-dimensional nickel foam (NF) was obtained by chemical immersion method and anneal method for ethanol electrocatalysis. The key points of the synthesis method are employing PDA as an adsorbent of graphene oxide (GO), rGO with a high specific surface area as the carbon carrier of the Pd–Pt alloy after annealing, and NF as the secondary substrate. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that Pd–Pt particles with dendrite-like micro/nanostructure are well dispersed on the surface of rGO, which provide a great deal of catalytic sites. The structure and phase characterization were determined by X-ray diffraction. The diffraction peaks of bimetallic catalysts are shifted in comparison with those of two monometallic catalysts, which prove the formation of the Pd–Pt alloy. The lattice strain and electronic effect of Pd–Pt alloy micro/nanostructured particles lead to the improvement of the electrocatalytic properties of materials. In the electrochemical measurement, the composite of the Pd–Pt alloy with appropriate atomic ratio, rGO, PDA and NF (Pd6Pt@GPN) provided the largest electrochemically active surface area and the highest peak current density with significantly enhanced cycling stability in the forward scan toward EOR in alkaline medium among all catalysts prepared. Thus, this Pd6Pt@GPN catalyst highlights the potential application in the anode catalyst of a direct ethanol fuel cell.

Bimetallic PdPt with Pt-Shell porous nanotubes for efficient oxygen reduction electrocatalysis

Dan Yu,Yufei Feng,Jing Jin,Qian Liu,Lu Tao,Junshuang Zhou,Li Hou,Faming Gao

A bstract One-dimensional (1D) Pt-based nanotubes (NTs) are widely studied as a promising class of ORR electrocatalysts . A rational porosity for wall of nanotubes could lead to higher atomic utilization and better mass transportation. To confirm this speculation, we prepare a novel class of PdPt porous nanotubes with sub-nano Pt-shell. Their ESCA of 95 m 2  g −1 and mass activity of 2.29 A mg Pt −1 are distinctly greater than that of the Pt nanotubes with perfect wall (91.45 m 2  g −1 and 2.09 A mg Pt −1 ), and are 14.3 and 9.6 times higher than those of commercial benchmark Pt/C catalyst, respectively. The prolonged electrocatalytic durability is also shown. The improved performance can be ascribed to a combination of alloying and unique geometry (one dimension and nanotubes with porous walls).

Platinum decorated hierarchical porous structures composed of ultrathin titanium nitride nanoflakes for efficient methanol oxidation reaction

Fangyong Yu,Yujiao Xie,Huiqin Tang,Naitao Yang,Xiuxia Meng,Xiaobin Wang,Xin Long Tian,Xu Yang

Alloying Pt electrocatalysts with the second transition metal (e.g., Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) is an effective strategy to boost the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and simultaneously reduce the catalyst cost for the direct methanol fuel cells. However, the durability issues caused by the leaching of the transition metals for prolonged time and carbon corrosion hinder the practical applications of the Pt alloys. Herein, for the first time, a facile and robust strategy is developed to synthesize titanium nitride and copper doped titanium nitride with porous and hierarchical tubular structures (labeled as TiN NFs and Ti 0.9 Cu 0.1 N NFs, respectively). When used as the Pt support, both of Pt/TiN NFs and Pt/Ti 0.9 Cu 0.1 N NFs exhibit much enhanced activity and durability compared with the commercial Pt/C catalyst. The experimental data confirms that the leaching of the transition metal can be significantly impeded by this strategy while their advantageous properties that favors MOR activity for the Pt based catalysts are maintained. This work opens a new path for maximizing the MOR activity and stability by introducing porous binary transition metal nitride as the Pt support, which integrates the advantages of high stability, co-catalysis and doping effects.

Investigation of cubic Pt alloys for ammonia oxidation reaction

Chan Yat Tung,Siddharth Kumar,Shao Minhua

As a promising fuel candidate, ammonia has been successfully used as anode feed in alkaline fuel cells. However, current technology in catalysts for ammonia electro-oxidation reaction (AOR) with respect to both cost and performance is inadequate to ensure large scale commercial application of direct ammonia fuel cells. Recent studies found that alloying Pt with different transition metals and controlling the morphology of catalysts can improve the AOR activity, and thus potentially can solve the cost issue. Herein, (100)-terminated Pt-M nanocubes (M = 3d-transition metals Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) are synthesized via wet-chemistry method and their catalytic activities toward AOR are evaluated. The addition of Fe, Co, Ni and Zn elements can enhance the AOR activity due to decrease in oxophilicity of platinum and bifunctional mechanism. Pt-Zn exhibits the maximum mass activity and specific activity with values of 0.41 A/mg Pt and 1.69 mA/cm 2 that are 1.6 and 1.8 times higher than Pt nanocubes, respectively. Pt-Fe, Pt-Co and Pt-Ni nanocubes also illustrate higher mass and specific activities compared to Pt nanocubes.

Kinetically Manipulating the Nucleus Attachment to Create Atypical Defective Rh−Pt Alloyed Nanostructures as Active Electrocatalysts

Kai Liu,Zixi Lyu,Xuejiao Chen,Xinyan Liao,Guanhong Chen,Xin Lin,Wei Wang,Shuifen Xie

Graphical A selective synthesis of atypical Rh−Pt alloyed nanocrystals with different morphologies and defective structures has been achieved through kinetically manipulating the nucleation and nucleus attachment. The defective Rh 47 Pt 53 wavy nanowires endowed with abundant grain boundaries and twin boundaries present a superior electrocatalytic performance for the ethanol oxidation reaction. Defective metal nanostructures have attracted great attention due to the striking catalytic behavior of the defect sites. Atypical metal nanocrystals generated from attached nuclei can accommodate abundant grain boundaries (GBs) and twin boundaries (TBs). However, the understanding of their growth-mechanism and precisely synthetic control over such defective nanocrystals are still scarce. Herein, using the Rh−Pt nanoalloy as a model system, we systematically demonstrate that a prudent control of the reaction kinetics can manipulate the metal nucleation and nucleus attachment to create atypical nanocrystals, including small isolated nanoparticles (NPs), defect-rich wavy nanowires (WNWs), and {100} facet-bounded spliced nanocubes (SNCs). In the ethanol oxidation electrocatalysis, the Rh 47 Pt 53 WNWs featured with abundant TBs and GBs show the greatest mass activity (0.655 A ⋅ mg −1 Pt , 2.9 times to the commercial Pt/C) and durability. Our work captures the core of reaction kinetics on regulating the nucleus attachment and enables the rational control over the nanocrystal morphology and defect.

The Key Gold: Enhanced Platinum Catalysis for the Selective Hydrogenation of α,β-Unsaturated Ketone

Yajie Xu,Lingli Liu,Hanbao Chong,Sha Yang,Ji Xiang,Xiangming Meng,Manzhou Zhu

AuPt alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were facilely synthesized with oleylamine as the stabilizing ligand and characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer analysis, and so on. In addition, the AuPt alloys supported by the nano CeO2 exhibit high selectivity and efficiency in hydrogenation of benzylidene acetone under ambient temperature and pressure. By analyzing the catalytic performance over the NPs with different Au:Pt compositions, we found that the TONPt values (based on the number of Pt atoms) vary in the same trend with the change of conversion. Despite that gold itself shows no catalytic activity, the improved conversion and TONPt with the alloy catalysts clearly show the promotion effect of gold on the catalytic activity of the platinum. The inactive metal significantly improves the catalytic activity of active metal, which shows that the AuPt alloy exhibits an interesting synergistic effect.

Facile synthesis of hollow dendritic Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles for enhanced methanol oxidation efficiency

Ning Sui,Ke Wang,Xinyao Shan,Qiang Bai,Lina Wang,Hailian Xiao,Manhong Liu,Vicki L. Colvin,William W. Yu

Hollow dendritic Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles were synthesized by a double template method: Ag nanoparticles as the hard template to obtain hollow spheres by a galvanic replacement reaction between PtCl62− and metallic Ag and surfactant micelles (Brij58) as the soft template to generate porous dendrites. The formation of a Ag/Pt alloy phase was confirmed by XRD and HRTEM. Elemental mapping and line scanning revealed the formation of the hollow architecture. We studied the effects of the Ag/Pt ratio, surfactant and reaction temperature on the morphology. In addition, we explored the formation process of hollow dendritic Ag/Pt nanoparticles by tracking the morphologies of the nanostructures formed at different stages. In order to improve the electrocatalytic property, we controlled the size of the nanoparticles and the thickness of the shell by adjusting the amount of the precursor. We found that these Ag/Pt alloy nanoparticles exhibited high activity (440 mA mg−1) and stability as an electrocatalyst for catalyzing methanol oxidation.

Synergistic effect of edge modification of NiPt alloy NDs and Ni doping in matrix for carbon nanosheets to effectively boost alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction

Hansong Cheng,Chen She,Ning Song,Bo Hu,Deping Wang,Chunmei Li,Hongjun Dong

The development of high-efficiency electrocatalysts with low noble metals content that can be used for large-scale hydrogen production is one of the current challenges. In this context, a novel electrocatalyst has been synthesized, which is a nickel-doped carbon nanosheet edge with NiPt alloy nanodots (NDs). This synthesis is achieved through a one-step in situ process that simultaneously incorporates doping and growth. The NiPt alloy NDs are highly dispersed on the edges of the carbon nanosheets, which not only prevents their agglomeration but also maximizes the exposure of active sites. Additionally, the incorporation of nickel into the carbon matrix serves to optimize the electronic structure, thereby enhancing the overall conductivity. As a result, the obtained NiPt/Ni–C catalysts will produce the synergistic effect induced by the edge modification of NiPt alloy NDs and Ni doping in the matrix, thereby improving hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in an alkaline medium. The NiPt/Ni–C-2 catalyst has an overpotential as low as 26 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the Tafel slope is only 20 mV dec −1 , which is far lower than that of the commercial Pt/C benchmark (43 mV). Meanwhile, the NiPt/Ni–C-2 catalyst can maintain continuously stable operation for 24 h without performance decrease. This work provides a new design philosophy for the exploitation of the low-cost, high-efficiency and stable catalyst in the alkaline HER application.
