Designing efficient and stable oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalysts is crucial for advancing water electrolysis technologies toward sustainable hydrogen production. Ruthenium pyrochlore oxide (A2Ru2O7−δ) has attracted much attention due to its high OER catalytic activity and low cost. However, their catalytic activity and stability require further improvement to achieve commercial viability. In this study, a series of Pt-deposited Yttrium ruthenate (Y2Ru2O7−δ, YRO) bifunctional catalysts Pt(x%)-Y2Ru2O7 were prepared by hydrothermal and heat treatment methods. In an acidic environment, the OER activity and stability were significantly improved compared with YRO, and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance gradually improved. Among them, Pt(25%)-YRO showed excellent OER (η10 = 260 mV, 43.1 mV dec−1) and HER (η10 = 120 mV, 51.2 mV dec−1) performance. In addition, Pt(25%)-YRO demonstrated excellent catalytic stability, with both the OER and the overall water splitting reaction maintaining stable operation at 10 mA cm−2 for over 50 h. This provides a new approach for developing high-activity, high-stability, dual-function water electrolytic catalysts for use in harsh acidic environments.

A series of highly dispersed platinum-deposited porous g-C 3 N 4 (Pt/pg-C 3 N 4 ) were successfully fabricated by a simple in situ photoreduction strategy using chloroplatinic acid and porous g-C 3 N 4 as precursors. Porous g-C 3 N 4 was fabricated by a pretreatment strategy using melamine as a raw material. The morphology, porosity, phase, chemical structure, and optical and electronic properties of as-prepared Pt/pg-C 3 N 4 were characterized. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared Pt/pg-C 3 N 4 was preliminarily evaluated by the degradation of aqueous azo dyes methyl orange under visible light irradiation. The as-prepared Pt/pg-C 3 N 4 were further applied to the degradation and mineralization of aqueous 4-fluorophenol. The recyclability of Pt/pg-C 3 N 4 was evaluated under four consecutive photocatalytic runs.

Rational designing electrocatalysts is of great significance for realizing high-efficiency H 2 production in the water splitting process. Generally, reducing the usage of precious metals and developing low-potential nucleophiles oxidation reaction to replace anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are efficient strategies to promote H 2 generation. Here, NiS-coated nickel–carbon nanofibers (NiS@Ni-CNFs) are prepared for low-content Pt deposition (Pt-NiS@Ni-CNFs) to attain the alkaline HER catalyst. Due to the reconfiguration of NiS phase and synergistic effect between Pt and nickel sulfides, the Pt-NiS@Ni-CNFs catalyst shows a high mass activity of 2.74-fold of benchmark Pt/C sample. In addition, the NiS@Ni-CNFs catalyst performs a superior urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity with the potential of 1.366 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) at 10 mA cm −2 , which demonstrates the great potential in the replacement of OER. Thus, a urea-assisted water splitting electrolyzer of Pt-NiS@Ni-CNFs (cathode)||NiS@Ni-CNFs (anode) is constructed to exhibit small voltages of 1.44 and 1.65 V to reach 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , which is much lower than its overall water splitting process, and presents a 6.5-fold hydrogen production rate enhancement. This work offers great opportunity to design new catalysts toward urea-assisted water splitting with significantly promoted hydrogen productivity and reduced energy consumption.

Through the slight dissolution of a Pt mesh counter electrode, Pt-deposited carbon fiber cloth (Pt/CFC) was successfully fabricated by successive cyclic voltammetry (CV) scanning from −0.77 V to 0.20 V (vs. RHE) in 0.5 M H2SO4 electrolyte. In the process of successive CV scanning, the electrocatalytic activity of CFC toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) becomes better and better owing to Pt deposition on CFC, and after 1000 CV cycles, the onset potential of CFC is identical to that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (0 V, vs. RHE) with high current densities at low overpotentials (η10, η100, and η170 = 4.5, 34.5, and 43.5 mV at current densities of 10, 100 and 170 mA cm−2). Interestingly, it was found that as-prepared Pt/CFC exhibits decreased HER activity with an onset potential of −0.26 V (vs. RHE) when Pt mesh was changed to bare CFC as the counter electrode, mainly due to the lower Pt loading amount (0.5 mg cm−2) on CFC compared to commercial Pt/C (Pt loading amount of 1.0 mg cm−2) and the inert CFC counter electrode (not like the Pt mesh counter electrode with slight dissolution in acidic media during CV scanning). Generally, there is great competition between the HER from water splitting and hydrogenation reduction of organic matter using the same HER-active electrocatalyst under identical experimental conditions. In this work, Pt/CFC was, therefore, evaluated for hydrogenation reduction of p-nitrophenol (PNP) to p-aminophenol (PAP) using water as the hydrogen donor in a CFC counter electrode configurated two-compartment reaction system. The results demonstrate that PNP can be effectively converted into PAP with a conversion efficiency of 83.1% and a Faradaic efficiency of 9.9% after electrocatalytic reaction for 12 h at an overpotential of −0.023 V. The findings of this work indicate that Pt counter electrodes are prone to dissolving, resulting in Pt deposition on the working electrode in acidic media, readily causing the false appearance of a non-Pt working electrode with high HER activity. Additionally, the Pt-deposited working electrode produced by this electrochemical approach is efficient for hydrogenation reduction of organic substances into high value-added chemicals using water as the hydrogenation donor.

Detecting of sulfur ions (S 2- ) in environment is critical to human health. In this work, a fast and convenient colorimetric sensing platform for S 2- was developed. In detail, Pt deposited on sea urchin-like CuCo 2 O 4 nanostructures (Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 ) was synthesized and demonstrated to possess enhanced peroxidase-like performance, similar to the natural horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 can catalyze colorless 3, 3, 5, 5-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) to be oxidized by H 2 O 2 into a blue product (oxTMB). When the above system encounters sulfur ions (S 2- ), the peroxidase-like activity of Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 is inhibited, accompanied with the color change of reaction solutions. On this basis, a colorimetric sensing platform for S 2- can be established. Kinetic experiments verified Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 possessed a higher affinity with substrate than that of HPR. The excellent peroxidase-like performance of Pt/CuCo 2 O 4 was attributed to two active species including hydroxyl radical (•OH) and superoxide radical (•O 2 - ) in the catalytic process. The linear range of the proposed sensing platform for S 2- was 0.5–10 μM as well as the low limit of detection is 85.9 nM, much lower than the World Health Organization regulations. The sensing platform had been successfully applied to the detection of S 2- in tap water and lake water, which provided a convenient method for detecting S 2- in wastewater.

A method has been developed for controlled epitaxial growth on cubic nanocrystals by selectively activating their surface via etching. For example, it produces Pd concave nanocubes via seeding growth on their corners and edges, and in turn, formulates highly active sites for catalysis. This method offers a better capability of preventing atomic addition on undesired locations and maintaining particle size in the seeding process, as compared with the previous technique. With the particle size well maintained, the products fully exhibit superior electrocatalytic performance enabled by active sites and high-index facets in formic acid oxidation. Another contribution of this work is to enable the growth of a noble metal with high catalytic activities on another type of cheaper metal, which greatly reduces the usage of expensive materials while retaining high catalytic activity. In this article, we have demonstrated the deposition of a very limited amount of Pt (only 3.3 wt%) on Pd nanocrystals towards high electrocatalytic activities in an oxygen reduction reaction. Preliminary studies demonstrate that the synthetic strategy can be also applied to the controllable deposition of a different material on the faces of a nanocrystal by simply altering surface conditions.

High-entropy materials have gained significant attention in the field of electrocatalysis for water electrolysis due to their adaptable electronic properties and the synergistic effects arising from the presence of multiple components. In this context, high-entropy hydroxides (HEHs) have emerged as a focal point of research, attributed to their layered structures and the excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic activity. Herein, a NiFeCoMoCr-HEH catalyst featuring a nanocrystalline structure was synthesized by a one-step hydrothermal method, resulting in the formation of a three-dimensional hierarchical architecture characterized by grape-shaped microspheres comprising interconnected 2D nanosheets. The catalyst demonstrated remarkable OER performance in alkaline conditions, achieving a minimal overpotential of 271.81 mV for a current density of 100 mA cm −2 and maintaining stability for 55 h. To enhance the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity of the catalyst, a minimal amount of Pt metal was deposited onto the NiFeCoMoCr-HEH surface. The Pt-NiFeCoMoCr-HEH catalyst achieved a HER overpotential of 31.85 mV at 10 mA cm −2 with 24 h durability. Upon integration into a water electrolyzer, the coupled Pt-NiFeCoMoCr-HEH||NiFeCoMoCr-HEH system delivered 50 mA cm −2 at 1.58 V, significantly lower than conventional Pt/C||IrO 2 /C systems (1.67 V). Impressively, the system was successfully powered by solar and wind energy, yielding hydrogen and showcasing its viability for renewable energy storage. This work highlights the promise of HEH-based catalysts in advancing environmentally friendly hydrogen production.
