High Pt utilization efficiency of electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media

Ningqiang Zhang,Lingcong Li,Ya Chu,Lirong Zheng,Shaorui Sun,Guizhen Zhang,Hong He,Jinsheng Zhao

Electrocatalyst for oxygen-reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for metal-air batteries, in which Pt-based materials are the benchmark catalysts for ORR. However, the high cost and limited supplies of Pt limit its broad use in commercial applications. Designing highly efficient Pt electrocatalysts can reduce material cost and enable commercial success for a wide variety of electrochemical technologies. Herein, we prepared Pt/MnO x and Pt/MnO electrocatalysts via deposition–precipitation and H 2 –reduction approaches. The Pt mass activities towards the ORR at 0.7 V for the Pt/MnO x , and Pt/MnO catalysts were 4.0 and 3.7 A mg Pt −1 , respectively, which were 20, and 18.5 times as commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst. The transferred electron numbers (n) were 3.6 and 4.0 for Pt/MnO x and Pt/MnO, respectively. Moreover, Pt/MnO catalyst exhibited a good ORR stability after 500 cycles compared to Pt/MnO x catalyst in 0.1 M KOH.

A unique platinum-graphene hybrid structure for high activity and durability in oxygen reduction reaction

Wang Chengming,Ma Liang,Liao Lingwen,Bai Song,Long Ran,Zuo Ming,Xiong Yujie

It remains a grand challenge to achieve both high activity and durability in Pt electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Here we develop a class of Pt highly concave cubic (HCC) nanocrystals, which are enriched with high-index facets, to enable high ORR activity. The durability of HCC nanocrystals can be significantly improved via assembly with graphene. Meanwhile, the unique hybrid structure displays further enhanced specific activity, which is 7-fold greater than the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalysts. Strikingly, it exhibits impressive performance in terms of half-wave potential (E 1/2 ). The E 1/2 of 0.967 V at the Pt loading as low as 46 μg cm −2 , which stands as 63 mV higher than that of the Pt/C catalysts, is slightly superior to the record observed for the most active porous Pt-Ni catalyst in literature. This work paves the way to designing high-performance electrocatalysts by modulating their surface and interface with loading substrates.

Efficient Pt-free electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction: Highly ordered mesoporous N and S co-doped carbon with saccharin as single-source molecular precursor

Yongqi Hua,Tingting Jiang,Kun Wang,Mingmei Wu,Shuqin Song,Yi Wang,Panagiotis Tsiakaras

Despite that nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) co-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) as Pt-free catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) shows a desirable performance, the synthesis method is always complicated and expensive, which greatly hinders its development and application. In the present work, a highly ordered mesoporous N and S co-doped carbon material is developed. The material is obtained by combining hard template and high-temperature pyrolysis method using cheap saccharin as a single-source molecular precursor, SBA-15 as the hard template and FeCl 3 as the catalyst to promote the carbonization process. It is found that the as-prepared SN-OMC catalyst, compared with the commonly used commercial Pt/C (20   wt.%), exhibits comparable ORR electrocatalytic activity with mainly four-electron (4e − ) process, superior stability and inertness to methanol in alkaline media, which could mainly benefit from the highly ordered mesoporous structure and the synergistic effect caused by the dual N and S doping. These advantages render SN-OMC a promising ORR electrocatalyst and a cheap alternative to Pt/C for practical fuel cell applications .

Flower-structured titanium oxide with two phase coexistence supported Pt electrocatalyst for effective enhancement of electrocatalytic activity

Lin Chen,Hao Hua,Qi Yang,Muhammad Sufyan Javed,Chenguo Hu,Cuiling Zhang

TiO 2 microflowers assembled by nanosheets are prepared by a one-step solvothermal process. The anatase-TiO 2 (B) dual-phase coexistence or anatase single phase is obtained under different annealing temperatures. Pt nanoparticles supported on the anatase-TiO 2 (B) microflowers are first applied to alcohol electrooxidation . The electrocatalytic performances of Pt/anatase-TiO 2 (B), Pt/anatase and Pt/carbon-black (Pt/C) on graphite substrates are systematically investigated. The Pt/anatase-TiO 2 (B) catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity and stability compared with that of Pt/anatase and Pt/C catalysts for methanol and ethanol in acidic and alkaline media , which is attributed to the large specific surface area, the porous channels to reduce the liquid sealing effect, the enhanced electronic conductivity by dual-phase coexistence and quick electron transfer from anatase phase to TiO 2 (B).

A Facile Synthesis of Tungsten Carbide/Carbon Nanocomposite as a Non-Platinum Electrocatalyst for Methanol Oxidation

Di Jing,Li Yang,Zhao Zhefei,Zheng Huajun

Tungsten carbide/carbon nanocomposite has been successfully synthesized by ion-exchange method and carbothernal reaction. A strongly basic ion exchange resin was chosen to act as both carbon framework and carbon source. The location of tungsten ions into pores of the resin was conducted by ion-exchanging with counter ion (Cl−) in resin. Due to the strong electrostatic attraction between tungsten ions and amine groups from resin, the guest ions can be uniformly distributed and strongly embedded in the framework. Thermal gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy results have demonstrated that a homogenous distribution throughout the surface of carbon after carbothermal reaction and a particle size of about 30 nm of Tungsten carbide. The oxidation of methanol experiment shows that the nanocomposite shows comparable electrocatalytic performance to pure platinum based electrode as well as an improved CO tolerance, which gives the potential capability route for non-platinum electrode for methanol electrooxidation.

A molecular design strategy to enhance hydrogen evolution on platinum electrocatalysts

Zhao Kaiyue,Xiang Ningyao,Wang Yu-Qi,Ye Jinyu,Jin Zihan,Fu Linke,Chang Xiaoxia,Wang Dong,Xiao Hai,Xu Bingjun

Design of electrode–aqueous interfaces for hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs) is crucial to developing improved electrolysers. Modifications at the surface of electrodes have been employed to accelerate HER, but effective guiding principles are lacking. Here we establish a molecular design strategy to enhance HER activity in alkaline media by up to 50 times by introducing an organic overlayer on Pt electrodes. We find that enhancement of HER activity by organic adsorbates is correlated with their binding energies to Pt electrodes; binding energy could be tuned by changing the number of aromatic rings and hydrophilicity of the adsorbates. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the overlayer led to a decrease in the d -band centre, resulting in weakened H adsorption, which mitigated its overbinding on Pt. Importantly, we demonstrate the enhancing effect of the 2,2′-bipyrimidine overlayer on Pt/C in a water electrolyser with a membrane electrode assembly configuration, confirming its effectiveness on the device level.

Breaking the activity-durability trade-off in platinum electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution through twin boundary engineering

Xiaokang Chen,Le Su,Yi Tan,Jian Yuan,Yujin Mou,Wei-Qiao Deng,Hao Wu

Platinum (Pt) electrocatalysts face a trade-off between catalytic activity and durability in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Designing Pt with a predominantly exposed (1 1 1) facet while improving its intrinsic activity remains a challenging endeavor. In this study, we synthesize high-entropy alloy (HEA) catalysts containing PtPdAuCuCo, featuring tunable (1 1 1)/(1 1 1) twin boundaries (TBs) achieved by entropy modulation. The incorporation of TBs creates favorable convex sites that facilitates overpotentially deposited hydrogen, leading to fast HER kinetics. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the presence of TBs strengthens the H adsorption due to enhanced electron transfer from the metal to the adsorbate, an effect not observed in TB-free HEAs with even greater Pt contents. Moreover, the HEA with TBs shows an upshifted d band center and increased bonding state occupancy compared to its TB-free counterpart. Consequently, it exhibits exceptional HER performance, achieving outstanding stability for 15 days without degradation and ultralow overpotentials of 51 and 72 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, outperforming TB-free HEAs. The mass activity reaches 3.05 A mg −1 Pt at 100 mV, exceeding that for TB-free HEA by 23.5 folds. Our findings highlight the potential of TB-engineering to optimize the activity-durability trade-off in Pt electrocatalysts.

Janus bimetallic materials as efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions

Wanli Liang,Zhichen Le,Pengyu Dong,Zixuan Dan,Jiaxuan Chen,Hao Zhang,Jian Chen,Fangyan Xie,Nan Wang,Yanshuo Jin,Hui Meng

The development of hydrogen energy is limited by the high cost of platinum group metals (PGM). There is an urgent need to design efficient PGM-free electrocatalysts in the hydrogen electrode. Herein, Janus Ni/W bimetallic materials are proposed as an effective PGM-free bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalyst. By constructing the bimetallic materials, a synergistic effect is realized to enhance the reaction kinetics and improve the catalytic performance. In general, Ni can provide excellent H ad sites, and W serves as OH ad sites. Therefore, the synergistic effect of Ni and W can improve the kinetics of hydrogen evolution reaction and the hydroxide oxidation reaction. Ni/W@NF can obtain the hydrogen evolution reaction current density of 10 mA cm −2 with an overpotential of only 62.6 mV, and the exchange current density of hydroxide oxidation reaction can reach 1.83 mA cm −2 . This work provides a new idea for the design of high-efficiency and low-cost PGM-free bifunctional hydrogen electrocatalysts.

Structural engineering and electronic modulation of ZIF-67 derived Ptx-CoSe2@NC hierarchical catalysts for efficient alkaline hydrogen evolution

Yuan Ma,Nanpu Cheng,Chunhong Li,Muhammad Aizaz Ud Din,Lan Zhao,Nengcong Pan,Yuhan Lei

The development of low-platinum electrocatalysts with high activity in alkaline media is critical for sustainable and cost-effective hydrogen production. In this study, we report a dual-phase engineering strategy to synthesize Pt-CoSe 2 nanoparticles embedded in nitrogen-doped carbon (Pt-CoSe 2 @NC) via controlled pyrolysis of ZIF-67. The resulting catalyst features hierarchical porosity and a 3D conductive network that confines ultrafine Pt particles and enhances interfacial charge and mass transfer. Strong Pt-CoSe 2 interactions induce electron redistribution, elevating cobalt oxidation states and optimizing hydrogen adsorption energetics. Nitrogen doping and surface-oxygenated Co species further boost performance. The optimized Pt-CoSe 2 @NC catalyst exhibits an overpotential of 37.4 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , a Tafel slope of 60.4 mV dec -1 , and remains over 90 % of its initial current density after 24 h in 1 M KOH. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a shift in the d -band center of Pt due to Pt-CoSe 2 interface formation, leading to near-thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption energy. This work integrates MOF-derived structural control with electronic interface modulation, offering a generalizable blueprint for designing efficient, low-noble-metal HER catalysts.

High electrocatalytic activity of Pt on porous Nb-doped TiO2 nanoparticles prepared by aerosol-assisted self-assembly

Xin Fu,Ruisong Li,Yucang Zhang

This study explores an aerosol-assisted method to prepare an efficient support for the Pt catalyst of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Titania nanoparticles and mesoporous niobium-doped titania nanoparticles were prepared by aerosol-assisted self-assembly using titanium(IV) isopropoxide and niobium(V) ethoxide as the titanium and niobium sources for application as non-carbon supports for the platinum electrocatalyst. The structural characteristics and electrochemical properties of the supports were investigated by transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry, and dynamic light scattering. The Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method was used to calculate the specific surface areas of the samples, and the pore size distribution was also examined. The results demonstrated that under a radial concentration gradient, the aerosol droplets self-assembled into a spherical shape, and mesoporous supports were obtained after subsequent removal of the surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide by annealing and washing. The hydrothermal technique was then used to deposit platinum on the TiO2-based supports. The electrical conductivity of the non-carbon support was enhanced by the strong metal–support interaction effect between the platinum catalyst particles and the porous niobium-doped TiO2 support. The half-wave potential, electrochemical surface area, mass activity, and specific activity of the obtained Pt/Nb-TiO2 catalyst all surpassed those of commercial Pt/C.

Oxygen-Driven Reconstruction Activates Quasi-Single Pd Sites in Hollow PdAg Nanotubes for Zinc–Air and Fuel Cells

Zongge Li,Wenjie Tian,Kunsheng Hu,Yajie Guo,Xiaotan Tian,Wenjun Kang,Rui Li,Konggang Qu,Lei Wang,Fanpeng Meng,Huayang Zhang,Haibo Li

Here, a template-engaged galvanic replacement strategy is developed to construct hollow PdAg alloy nanotubes, where interfacial oxygen drives surface reconstruction and stabilizes quasi-single Pd active sites. The interplay of atomic-scale characterizations and theoretical calculations reveals that the oxygen-induced atomic rearrangement downshifts the Pd d -band center, optimizes the adsorption-desorption energetics of ORR intermediates, and lowers the energy barrier for * OH desorption. The optimized Pd 0.30 @Ag catalyst achieves an onset potential of 0.951 V and a half-wave potential of 0.868 V in alkaline media, surpassing commercial Pt/C even at an ultra-low Pd loading (3 wt.%). Furthermore, Pd 0.30 @Ag-based electrodes deliver outstanding performance in both zinc-air batteries (ZABs) and anion-exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs), demonstrating high power densities, excellent cycling stability, and strong potential for scalable platinum-free energy conversion devices. This work provides a general strategy for engineering interface-confined active sites through surface reconstruction, offering new insights into the rational design of next-generation electrocatalysts.

Interface Engineering and Heteroatom Doping Trigger Multisite Synergism in V-Incorporated MoP/Cu3P to Accelerate Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Xueting Li,Guimin Wang,Chunmei Lv,Xiuwen Wang,Yue Liu,Haijing Yan,Zilin Zhang,Yanqing Jiao

Efficient non-Pt electrocatalysts for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are necessary for industrial water electrolysis. Cu-based materials are cheaper alternatives, but their performances are far from satisfactory due to slow water dissociation kinetics and weak Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*). Herein, we propose to construct multiple sites with different activation functions in response to sluggish alkaline HER kinetics. A multi-interfacial, ultrasmall V-doped MoP and Cu3P heterostructure (V-MoP/Cu3P) was successfully fabricated by confined conversion of a V–Mo bimetallic polyoxometalate (POM) cluster embedded in a Cu-based metal–organic framework (MOF). The spatial separation of each POM cluster by the MOF and the inherent structure of each [VO6] connecting four [MoO6] octahedrons enable precise V incorporation in the MoP lattice and multi-interface coupling of the MoP and Cu3P heterojunction. As a result, the interfacial charge redistribution occurs and the d-band centers are finely tuned, triggering a multisite synergism to encourage the adsorption and activation of H2O, H–OH* bond breaking, and H2 release. Consequently, V-MoP/Cu3P exhibits significantly enhanced HER activity, even superior to the commercial 20% Pt/C catalyst at current densities exceeding 155 mA cm–2, which indicates the feasibility of the V-MoP/Cu3P catalyst as cheaper alternatives to Pt-based catalysts in industrial applications. This work provides new insight for the design of low-cost, high-abundance HER catalysts via multi-interface engineering and heteroatom doping to trigger multisite synergies.
