Pt–C Interfaces Based on Electronegativity-Functionalized Hollow Carbon Spheres for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Xiao Shang,Zi-Zhang Liu,Shan-Shan Lu,Bin Dong,Jing-Qi Chi,Jun-Feng Qin,Xien Liu,Yong-Ming Chai,Chen-Guang Liu

The hydrogen evolution reaction activity of carbon-supported Pt catalyst is highly dependent on Pt–C interfaces. Herein, we focus on the relationships between Pt activity and N/O-functionalized hollow carbon sphere (HCS) substrate in acidic media. The electrochemical dissolution of Pt counter electrode is performed to prepare Pt nanoparticles in low loading. The N groups are beneficial for homogeneously sized Pt nanoparticles, whereas the O groups lead to aggregated nanoparticles. Moreover, the proper electronegativity of the N groups may enable capturing of protons to create proton-rich Pt–C interfaces and transfer them onto the Pt sites. The O groups may also capture protons by hydrogen bonding, but the subsequent release of protons is more difficult due to a stronger electronegativity and result in an inferior Pt activity. Consequently, the N-doped HCS with a low Pt loading (1.7 μg cm–2 and 0.05 wt %) possesses a higher intrinsic activity compared with Pt on O-doped HCS. Moreover, it outperforms the commercial 20% Pt/C with a stable operation for 12 h. This work may provide suggestions for constructing the advantageous Pt–C interfaces by proper functional groups for high catalytic efficiencies.

Effect of Pt/C addition to TiO2 films on adhesion and rapid light-induced detachment of mammalian cell cultures

Kui Cheng,Xiaozhao Wang,Wenjian Weng,Jun Lin,Huiming Wang

Light-induced cell detachment on the substrate of TiO 2 nanodots has been proved to be a safe and attractive method for cell harvesting in tissue engineering. In order to improve the cell release efficiency, bioinert platinum with excellent charge transport loading in biocompatible graphite was prepared. 20   wt.% Pt/C powder showing excellent electrical, chemical and bioactive properties was incorporated to a TiO 2 system. We investigated the biocompatibility of Pt/C–TiO 2 composite films with different amounts of Pt/C with C/tetrabutyl titanate molar ratio varying from 0 to 0.42. The adhesion and proliferation rates of pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells (mouse calvaria-derived) on the films prepared with the highest C/TiO 2 molar ratio are higher than that of the pure TiO 2 and other films, indicating a Pt/C dose-dependent effect. It is shown that the detachment efficiency of MC3T3-E1 cells depends on Pt/C amount and UV illumination time. Moreover, films prepared with C/tetrabutyl titanate molar ratio of 0.42 showed 93% cell detachment ratio within 5   min of UV illumination, while bare TiO 2 films only reached 75%, indicating an improved cell release efficiency by the incorporation of Pt/C. However, an interesting phenomenon was found that longer illumination time showed lower detachment ratios to some extent, which is contrary to our previous work. It is believed that this work presents the improved cell detachment efficiency by the incorporation of Pt/C.

Improving Oxygen Reduction Performance by Using Protic Poly(Ionic Liquid) as Proton Conductors

Xiaocong Yan,Fangfang Zhang,Haining Zhang,Haolin Tang,Mu Pan,Pengfei Fang

Improving catalytic performance of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of Pt/C catalysts is essential for reducing Pt-loading and the according cost of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Herein, we report a new conceptual design of catalyst layers to improve the ORR performance of Pt/C catalysts by replacing perfluorosulfonated ionomers with protic poly(ionic liquid) as a proton conductor. The specific activity of the designed catalyst at 0.9 V under acidic conditions is over three times higher than that of catalyst using Nafion as the proton conductor. Furthermore, the durability test reveals that the introduction of protic poly(ionic liquid) ionomers can protect Pt nanoparticles against aggregation during potential cycles, but it is less durable than Nafion because of the nature of hydrocarbons. Nevertheless, we believe that replacing perfluorosulfonated ionomers with protic poly(ionic liquid) as proton conductors could be a promising strategy to design an efficient cathode for low Pt-loading PEMFCs.

Data-driven design and controllable synthesis of Pt/carbon electrocatalysts for H2 evolution

Anhui Zheng,Yuxuan Wang,Fangfei Zhang,Chunnian He,Shan Zhu,Naiqin Zhao

To achieve net-zero emissions, a particular interest has been raised in the electrochemical evolution of H 2 by using catalysts. Considering the complexity of designing catalyst, we demonstrate a data-driven strategy to develop optimized catalysts for H 2 evolution. This work starts by collecting data of Pt/carbon catalysts, and applying machine learning to reveal the importance of ranking various features. The algorithms reveal that the Pt content and Pt size have the greatest impact on the catalyst overpotentials. Following the data-driven analysis, a space-confined method is used to fabricate the size-controllable Pt nanoclusters that anchor on nitrogen-doped (N-doped) mesoporous carbon nanosheet network. The obtained catalysts use less platinum and exhibit better catalytic activity than current commercial catalysts in alkaline electrolytes. Moreover, the data formed in this work can be used as feedback to further improve the data-driven model, thereby accelerating the development of high-performance catalysts.

Pt/C-catalyzed Selective Hydrogenation of Nitroarenes to N-arylhydroxylamines under Mild Conditions

Mengting Chen,Meihua Zhang,Xiaoshuang Liu,Yingxin Liu

Graphical Herein, we report a highly efficient synthesis of N -arylhydroxylamines through controllable hydrogenation of nitroarenes using hydrazine hydrate as a hydrogen donor over Pt/C catalyst at a low temperature (30 °C). The synthesis of N -arylhydroxylamines through the in-situ hydrogenation of nitroarenes over commercial Pt/C catalyst was investigated. The effects of various reaction conditions including hydrogen donor, solvent, catalyst dosage, temperature and reaction time on the selective hydrogenation of nitrobenzene (NB) to N -phenylhydroxylamine (PHA) were systematically investigated. The results showed that the yield of N -phenylhydroxylamine reached 87.2 % using hydrazine hydrate as hydrogen donor in N,N -dimethylformamide solvent at 30 °C for 60 min. And the catalyst showed no obvious activity loss after a 6-times recycle. Meanwhile, the developed methodology can also transform a range of nitroarenes to the corresponding N -arylhydroxylamines in excellent yields (74–99 %).

Ionic Liquid Modification of High-Pt-Loading Pt/C Electrocatalysts for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell Application

Fengshun Cheng,Yuchen Guo,Xinhong Liang,Fanqiushi Yue,Yichang Yan,Yang Li,Yuanzhi Zhu,Yanping He,Shangfeng Du

Ionic liquid modification for carbon-supported platinum (Pt/C) electrocatalysts to enhance their oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity has been well recognized. However, the research has only been reported on the low-Pt-loading Pt/C electrocatalysts, e.g., 20 wt%, while in practical applications, usually high-Pt-loading Pt/C electrocatalysts of 45–60 wt% are used. In this work, ionic liquid modification is systematically investigated for a Pt/C electrocatalyst with 60 wt% Pt loading for its ORR activity in the cathode in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Various adsorption amounts are studied on the catalyst surface. Different modification behavior is found. Mechanism exploration shows that the adsorption of ionic liquid mainly happens on the Pt electrocatalyst surface and in the micropores of the carbon support. The highest fuel cell power performance is achieved at an ionic liquid loading of 7 wt%, which is much higher than the 3 wt% reported for the low-Pt-loading Pt/C.

Co/N-doped carbon nanotubes-grafted porous carbon sheets architecture as efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Deying Leng,Houbing Tang,Mingming Yang,Jinniu Zhang,Yafeng Zhang,Juan Qin,Qianru Liu,Hongbing Lu,Feng Yin

The development of high performance and low-cost non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to replace platinum-based catalysts is significant in facilitating the commercialization of proton exchange membrance fuel cells (PEMFCs). In this work, a low-cost and effective approach is employed for producing Co/N-doped carbon nanotubes/porous carbon sheets (Co/N-CNT/PCS) catalysts by one-pot annealing of Co salt, melamine and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The prepared catalysts exhibit a N-doped carbon nanotubes-grafted porous carbon sheets structure, in which Co nanoparticles (Co NPs) encapsulated in bamboo-like CNTs. When compared with a commercial platinum carbon (Pt/C) catalyst in an alkaline solution, one such catalyst (Co/N-CNT/PCS800) displays comparable ORR electrocatalytic activity as well as improved long-team stability and methanol tolerance, arising from the combined effect of high specific surface area, large pore volume and the cooperation of pyridinic-N and graphitic-N. Moreover, given the scalability and economy of this synthesis, Co/N-CNT/PCS catalysts produced in this way are likely to emerge as a major contender as an ORR catalysts in PEMFCs.

Highly sensitive amperometric Nafion-based CO sensor using Pt/C electrodes with different kinds of carbon materials

Yehui Guan,Fangmeng Liu,Bin Wang,Xue Yang,Xishuang Liang,Hui Suo,Peng Sun,Yanfeng Sun,Jian Ma,Jie Zheng,Yue Wang,Geyu Lu

In this paper, a novel amperometric CO sensor using Nafion and Pt/C composite electrodes was fabricated. Three kinds of carbon materials (carbon fibers, multiwall carbon nanotubes and carbon blacks) were utilized as the supports of the sensing and reference electrodes for the CO sensors. The results revealed that the effective Pt loadings on the electrodes increased in the following order: carbon fibers (CFs)   >   multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)   >   carbon blacks (CBs), leading to the increasing of the sensitivities toward CO in same order. In other words, the sensor using Pt/CFs as the sensing electrode (SE) showed the highest sensitivity with the value of 0.077   μA/ppm and shortest response time in the range of CO concentration from 1 to 200   ppm at room temperature . Further, a reproducible and stable response against 50   ppm CO was obtained for the sensor with Pt/CFs SE materials . Moreover, a low detection limit of 0.1   ppm for CO was also examined, suggesting that the sensor can be convenient for detecting very low traces of CO.

Simultaneously achieving ultrahigh loading and ultrasmall particle size of Pt/C catalysts

Xiaoyang Wang,Ziqi Fu,Ziyi Luo,Weidi Liu,Jia Ding,Jianrong Zeng,Yanan Chen,Wenbin Hu

High-loading Pt/C catalysts play an important role in the fabrication of membrane electrode assemblies with thin catalytic layer, which enhance mass transport and maintain the balance of water and heat. Unfortunately, as the loading increases, the agglomeration and growth of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) occur, causing unsatisfactory performance. Here, we present an efficient method for preparing of highly dispersed and small-sized Pt/C catalysts with Pt loadings varying from 39.01 wt% to 66.48 wt% through the high-temperature shock technique. The high density and ultrafine (~2.5 nm) Pt NPs are successfully anchored onto Vulcan XC-72R carbon black without the use of additional capping agents or surfactants. The modified carbon supports enhance the affinity for Pt precursors, contributing to loading efficiencies of 95% or more, while also providing abundant sites for the nucleation and fixation of Pt NPs, thus preventing agglomeration. In the context of the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media, the as-synthesized high-loading Pt/C catalysts show remarkable activity and stability, outperforming the state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C. This is mainly because the combined effects of ultrasmall and uniform Pt NPs, optimized electronic structure of Pt site, superhydrophilicity and effective anchoring of Pt NPs. The polymer electrolyte membrane electrolyzer integrated with Pt60/OX72R and commercial IrO 2 reaches 1 A cm –2 at 1.77 V and operates stably for 120 hours with a negligible voltage decay. This new strategy is fast, scalable and cost-effective for large-scale production of metal-supported catalysts, especially for the high-loading ones.

Sicong Chen,Yuanzhi Zhu,Danyun Xu,Wenchao Peng,Yang Li,Guoliang Zhang,Fengbao Zhang,Xiaobin Fan

Graphical Let's synergize ORR : A novel hybrid catalyst of Co 3 O 4 and covalent triazine framework (CTF) is prepared through the in situ growth of Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles on CTF by using a hydrothermal method. This novel oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst shows a synergistic catalytic effect as well as comparable activity to the commercial Pt/C ORR catalyst (see picture). The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is an important process in energy conversion and storage devices. Great efforts have been focused on developing efficient, durable, and low-cost non-Pt catalysts. In this study, a novel hybrid ORR catalyst of Co 3 O 4 and covalent triazine framework (CTF) was prepared through the in-situ growth of Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles on CTF by using a hydrothermal method. Systematical studies revealed that this hybrid catalyst not only has a synergistic catalytic effect in the ORR, but also has superior stability and better methanol resistance than commercial Pt/C catalysts.

Evaluation of the effect of biofilm formation on the reductive transformation of triclosan in cathode-modified electrolytic systems

Shi-Ming Niu,Qian Zhang,Thangavel Sangeetha,Lei Chen,Lan-Ying Liu,Ping Wu,Chao Zhang,Wei-Mon Yan,He Liu,Min-Hua Cui,Ai-Jie Wang

The performance of electrochemical reduction is often enhanced by electrode modification techniques. However, there is a risk of microbial colonization on the electrode surface to form biofilms in the treatment of actual wastewater with modified electrodes. In this work, the effects of biofilm formation on modified electrodes with reduced graphene oxide (rGO), platinum/carbon (Pt/C), and carbon nanotube (CNT) were investigated in triclosan (TCS) degradation. With biofilm formation, the TCS degradation efficiencies of carbon cloth (CC), rGO@CC, Pt/C@CC, and CNT@CC decayed to 54.53 %, 59.77 %, 69.19 %, and 53.97 %, respectively, compared to the raw electrodes. Confocal laser scanning microscopy and microbial community analysis revealed that the difference in biofilm thickness and activity were the major influencing factors on the discrepant TCS degradation rather than the microbial community structure. The electrochemical performance tests showed that the biofilm formation increased the ohmic resistance by an order of magnitude in rGO@CC, Pt/C@CC, and CNT@CC, and the charge transfer resistance was increased by 2.45, 3.78, and 7.75 times, respectively. The dechlorination and hydrolysis governed the TCS degradation pathway in all electrolysis systems, and the toxicity of electrochemical reductive products was significantly decreased according to the Toxicity Estimation Software Tool analysis. This study presented a systematic assessment of the biofilm formation on modified electrodes in TCS reduction, and the undisputed experimental outcomes were obtained to enrich the knowledge of implementing modified electrodes for practical applications.

Upcycling retired Li-ion batteries into high-performance oxygen reduction reaction electrocatalysts in flexible Al-air batteries

Haolin Hu,Yuelin Wang,Yue Xu,Liangxiao Jin,Samuel Jeong,Xinfu Xie,Chengqian Xiong,Bojun Zhou,Wenping Sun,Jialiang Zhang,Xi Lin,Kailong Hu

Upcycling retired lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) into value-added electrocatalysts represents a promising strategy for tuning the trash into treasure. Herein, an effective approach is reported to convert the LIB anode residues into electrocatalysts that enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The residues are utilized for synthesizing reduced graphene oxides (rGO) with Mn nanoparticles anchored by N and S dopants (Mn/NS-rGO). A Pt/C-comparable ORR performance is achieved in alkaline media, with the onset and half-wave potentials of 1.01 and 0.87 V, as well as the excellent durability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Mn sites, coordinating with N and S dopants, simultaneously optimize the intermediate adsorption and charge distribution, which in turn facilitates ORR. The solid-state Al-air batteries are assembled by using Mn/NS-rGO as the cathode catalyst, showing the power density of 103.8 mW cm − 2 , which successfully charge a cell phone and power LED lights under flexible working conditions.
