The catalytic removal of HCHO with low noble-metal loading at room temperature is meaningful and challenging work. Herein, high performance catalysts x Pt/TS-1 (Si/Ti = 30, x = 0.1, 0.3, and 0.6 wt%) for HCHO oxidation were synthesized by polyvinyl alcohol-protected NaBH 4 reduction method. The Pt/TS-1 sample loading with 0.3 wt% Pt nanoparticles (NPs) could completely remove 120 ppm HCHO at space velocity (SV) of 60,000 mL/(g h) at 20 °C. Moreover, the 0.3Pt/TS-1 sample remained outstanding activity and stability in humid air with 35–75% water vapor and at high SV with a range between 60,000 and 240,000 mL/(g h). Based on the results of UV–vis, Raman, NH 3 -TPD, Contact angle measurement, CO chemisorption , and O 2 -TPD, the excellent catalytic performance of Pt/TS-1 was mostly attributed to high Pt dispersion and high concentration of adsorbed oxygen species. This work expands the field of utilization of zeolite supported noble-metal catalysts for the purification of indoor pollutants.

ABSTRACT Owing to its cost-effectiveness and adjustable eight-electron distribution in the 3 d orbital, nickel oxide (NiO) is considered an effective electrocatalyst for an ambient electrochemical nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR). However, because of the low conductivity of the transition metal oxide electrocatalyst, its application in this field is limited. In this study, we found that the doping of NiO nanosheets with a small amount (3–10 nm) of Pt nanoparticles (Pt/NiO-NSs) leads to considerable improvements in the Faradaic efficiency (FE) and NH 3 yield compared with those obtained using pure NiO, breaking the common perception that commercial Pt-based electrocatalysts demonstrate little potential for NRR due to their high hydrogen evolution tendency. In a 0.1 mol/L Na 2 SO 4 solution at −0.2 V vs. RHE, a typical Pt/NiO-2 sample exhibits an optimum electrochemical NH 3 yield of 20.59 μg h –1 mg –1 cat. and an FE of 15.56%, which are approximately 5 and 3 times greater, respectively, than those of pure NiO nanosheets at the same applied potential. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis revealed that Pt in Pt/NiO-NSs exist as Pt 0 , Pt 2+ , and Pt 4+ and that high-valence Pt ions are more electropositive, thereby favoring chemisorption and the activation of N 2 molecules. Density function theory calculations showed that the d -band of Pt nanoparticles supported on NiO is significantly tuned compared to that of pure Pt, affording a more favorable electronic structure for NRR. The results of this study show that Pt can be an effective NRR electrochemical catalyst when loaded on an appropriate substrate. Most importantly, it provides a new synthetic avenue for the fabrication of highly active Pt-based NRR electrocatalysts.

It is found that catechol inhibits the oxidase-mimicking activity of chitosan-protected platinum nanoparticles (Chit-PtNPs) by competing with the substrate for the active site of the Ch-PtNPs. The inhibition mechanism of catechol is different from that of ascorbic acid in that it neither reacts with O 2 •- nor reduces the oxidized 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Tyrosinase (TYRase) catalyzes the oxidation of catechol, thus restoring the activity of oxidase-mimicking Chit-PtNPs. By combining the Chit-PtNP, catechol, and TYRase interactions with the oxidation of TMB to form a yellow diamine (maximal absorbance at 450 nm), a colorimetric analytical method was developed for TYRase determination and inhibitor screening. The assay works in the 0.5 to 2.5 U·mL −1 TYRase activity range, and the limit of detection is 0.5 U·mL −1 . In our perception, this new assay represents a powerful approach for determination of TYRase activity in biological samples.
Schematic representation of a colorimetric method for tyrosinase (TYRase) detection and inhibitor screening. It is based on the fact that catechol can inhibit the oxidase-like activity of chitosan-stabilized platinum nanoparticles (Ch-PtNPs) by competing with the substrate for the active sites and TYRase can catalyze the oxidation of catechol.

To address the environmental hazards associated with traditional chemicals in fabricating metal nanoparticles , greener synthetic method using plant-derived material would be a good choice. In this study, platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) were greenly fabricated by tea polyphenol (Tp) and applied in hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) detection. As-prepared Pt NPs have been characterized by a series of analysis. Physical characterizations show the presence of Pt NPs whose size are about 2.7 ± 0.5 nm and very homogeneous. The electrochemical results show that, as-obtained Pt NPs by Tp (Tp-R-Pt) exhibit good anti-interference, quite a long-term stability and high sensitivity (9.1 μA mM −1 cm −2 ), and it could detect H 2 O 2 without any additional mediator or enzyme. This work would play a positive role in the development of ‘green’ fabrication pattern of nanomaterials using natural resources.

Achieving the real-time detection of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) based on metal oxide semiconductor (MOS) gas sensors is of great significance for rapid disease diagnosis. However, the high-power consumption and poor selectivity severely limit its practice application. In this study, a platinum nanoparticle (Pt NPs)-loaded porous metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived SnO2 material was successfully synthesized to optimize the H2S-sensing performance at room temperature. The optimized Pt-loaded porous SnO2-based gas sensor exhibited remarkably high sensitivity (712–10 ppm), fast response (21 s), good selectivity, and extremely low detection limit for H2S (10 ppb) at room temperature. The in-depth analysis demonstrated that the porous structure of Sn-MOF can provide adequate active reaction sites for gas molecules. Moreover, the uniform distribution of surface-loaded Pt NPs can initiate electron and chemical sensitization effects, thereby improving the sensing performance. The successful application of Pt NPs provides a novel approach to improve the room-temperature (RT) sensing performance of metal-oxide-semiconductor-based gas sensors.

The hydrolysis of K2[PtCl4] under visible light, the equilibrium, morphology, and size of Pt NPs combined with CDs, the valence states of Pt element and the bonding of Pt NPs with CDs, the influence of different kinds of cyclodextrin (α, β, γ-CDs), the acidity of the solution, and the visible light color on the catalytic ability of Pt NPs were all researched by typical approaches. All results prove visible light irradiation is effectively playing a key role in the reaction process to form Pt NPs in a very narrow size distribution. pH = 9, β-CDs, and purple visible light are the optimized reaction conditions. The Pt-CDs present a high rate constant of 0.88 min−1 in the catalytic reduction of 4-NP. This research is beneficial for expanding photochemical approaches from ultraviolet light to visible light, which is more of green chemistry, low cost, and facile.

As an abundant and renewable biological resource, straw has been attracting wide attention due to its distinctive tubular structure and property. Herein, soybean straw was pretreated by KOH and was used as a support for Pt nanoparticles (NPs) to realize efficient benzene combustion. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images of straw-derived samples illustrated the channel wall with open macropores and uniform distribution of Pt NPs in the straw skeleton. As a result, the temperature for 90% benzene conversion (T90%) by Pt/KAC-3 (Pt/KAC-n, where n represents the mass ratio of straw to KOH that was varied between 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3) was determined to be 179 °C under a space velocity (SV) of 120 000 mL/(g·h). Additionally, thermal stability was enhanced to nearly 96 h. This performance is predominantly attributed to its inherent channel structure, which has open and accessible pores, resulting in a uniform distribution of Pt NPs. Such structure enables the rapid transfer of benzene molecules between channels and ensures the accessibility of Pt NPs. Furthermore, the diffusion properties were confirmed by Fick’s second law. This study demonstrated a design of more efficient catalysts while using a renewable and abundant biomaterial.

We describe the preparation of nanoporous carbon nanofibers (CNFs) decorated with platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) in this work by electrospining polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers and subsequent carbonization and binding of PtNPs. The fabricated nanoporous CNF-PtNP hybrids were further utilized to modify glass carbon electrodes and used for the non-enzymatic amperometric biosensor for the highly sensitive detection of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). The morphologies of the fabricated nanoporous CNF-PtNP hybrids were observed by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and their structure was further investigated with Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Raman spectrum. The cyclic voltammetry experiments indicate that CNF-PtNP modified electrodes have high electrocatalytic activity toward H2O2and the chronoamperometry measurements illustrate that the fabricated biosensor has a high sensitivity for detecting H2O2. We anticipate that the strategies utilized in this work will not only guide the further design and fabrication of functional nanofiber-based biomaterials and nanodevices, but also extend the potential applications in energy storage, cytology, and tissue engineering. Keywords:electrospining;carbon nanofibers;nanoparticles;biosensor;H2O2

The removal of volatile organic compounds is an important aspect of sustainability and environmental protection. Catalytic oxidation is one of the most efficient routes to achieve this. The K+ form of an aluminium-rich Beta zeolite-supported Pt nanoparticle (2.2 nm) [Pt/KBeta-seed-directed synthesis (SDS)] catalyst is very active for the low-temperature catalytic removal of toluene and results in full conversion at a much lower temperature than a conventional KBeta-supported Pt nanoparticle (Pt/KBeta-TEA) catalyst. The higher activity of the Pt/KBeta-SDS catalyst compared with the Pt/KBeta-TEA catalyst is related to the advantages of the higher K+ content and fewer terminal silanol defects in the KBeta-SDS catalyst than in the KBeta-TEA catalyst. The higher K+ content is helpful for the formation of more Pt0 species, and both the higher K+ content and the lower number of terminal silanol defects are favourable for the adsorption of toluene, as evidenced by XPS and the toluene-TPD profiles. More importantly, the Pt/KBeta-SDS catalyst shows very stable activities in the presence of H2O and CO2 in the feed gases. The combination of this extraordinary activity and excellent stability in the catalytic removal of toluene over the Pt/KBeta-SDS catalyst are important for future environment protection.

Two types of model Pt–Cu catalysts are designed and prepared to explore the contribution of the geometric and electronic effects from copper to the catalytic performance of Pt nanoparticles in the selective hydrogenation of p-chloronitrobenzene (p-CNB). One model Pt–Cu catalyst (called Cu/C–Pt) is Pt nanoparticles deposited on ultra-small copper particle-decorated activated carbon, and the other is copper particle-decorated Pt/C catalyst (called Pt/C–Cu). Cu/C–Pt catalyst has an activity lower than that of Pt/C, but the selectivity of the desired product p-chloroaniline (p-CAN) on the Cu/C–Pt catalyst is much higher than that on Pt/C. On the Pt/C–Cu catalyst, p-CNB cannot be completely converted into p-CAN. The dechlorination rates of p-CAN on Cu/C–Pt catalysts are three orders of magnitude lower than that on Pt/C. More interestingly, the dechlorination reaction of p-CAN on Pt/C–Cu cannot be observed. High resolution TEM images of our Pt–Cu catalysts show that Pt nanoparticles keep their crystalline structure after incorporation with copper. The dispersions of Pt in 2Pt/C, 5Cu/C–2Pt, and 2Pt/C–5Cu reach 0.106, 0.083 and 0.027, respectively (the numbers before Pt and Cu represent their percentages), revealing that Pt nanoparticles in Cu/C–Pt have a larger exposed surface than those in Pt/C–Cu. It can be deduced that copper mainly exerts an electronic effect on the catalytic performance of Pt nanoparticles in Cu/C–Pt. On the other hand, the geometric effect on Pt from copper in Pt/C–Cu leads to not only a low dispersion of Pt nanoparticles but a weak activity in catalytic hydrogenation of p-CNB and dechlorination of p-CAN. The interaction between Pt nanoparticles and Cu nanoparticles at room temperature is also discussed.

Herein, we present a synergistic catalytic approach utilizing Pt nanoparticles anchored on a graphitic carbon nitride (CN) for the selective hydrogenation of stearic acids into alcohols. The catalyst was prepared via a photodeposition method, ensuring the high dispersion of Pt nanoparticles on the surface of CN. Notably, the 0.48 wt% Pt-CN catalyst exhibits the best performance, achieving 100 % conversion of stearic acid into stearic alcohol with a yield of up to 89.6 % under optimized reaction conditions. The interaction between Pt nanoparticles and g-C 3 N 4 support is confirmed experimentally by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and theoretically by Bader charge analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Furthermore, in-depth investigations into the adsorption behavior unveil a pronounced synergistic effect between the loaded Pt nanoparticles and CN support, leading to enhanced adsorption capacities for acid molecules and hydrogen. Our findings not only provide insights into the design of novel catalysts for sustainable chemical transformations but also highlight the potential of carbon nitride-based catalysts in converting bio-derived acids into value-added alcohol products.

Photothermal catalysis is extremely promising for the removal of various indoor pollutants owing to its photothermal synergistic effect, while the low light utilization efficiency and unclear catalytic synergistic mechanism hinder its practical applications. Here, nitrogen atoms are introduced, and Pt nanoparticles are loaded on TiO2 to construct Pt/N-TiO2-H2, which exhibits 3.5-fold higher toluene conversion rate than the pure TiO2. Compared to both photocatalytic and thermocatalytic processes, Pt/N-TiO2-H2 exhibited remarkable performance and stability in the photothermocatalytic oxidation of toluene, achieving 98.4% conversion and 98.3% CO2 yield under a light intensity of 260 mW cm–2. Furthermore, Pt/N-TiO2-H2 demonstrated potential practical applicability in the photothermocatalytic elimination of various indoor volatile organic compounds. The synergistic effect occurs as thermocatalysis accelerates the accumulation of carboxylate species and the degradation of aldehyde species, while photocatalysis promotes the generation of aldehyde species and the consumption of carboxylate species. This ultimately enhances the photothermocatalytic process. The photothermal synergistic effect involves the specific conversion of intermediates through the interplay of light and heat, providing novel insights for the design of photothermocatalytic materials and the understanding of photothermal mechanisms.
