Fast Polymerization of Polydopamine Based on Titanium Dioxide for High-Performance Flexible Electrodes

Zhaoling Huang,Qi Zeng,Yun Hui,Md. Eshrat E. Alahi,Shuijie Qin,Tianzhun Wu

Dopamine (DA) and its derivatives are promising for the fabrication of functional films and devices with excellent conductivity and long-term stability; nevertheless its polymerization process is typically prolonged. We have proposed the accelerated deposition process using ultraviolet (UV) irradiation with the existence of nanotitanium dioxide (nano-TiO2) in order to realize the rapid and stable synthesis of polydopamine (PDA) films. The in situ deposition process of nanostructured coatings such as platinum nanowire (PtNW) was also proposed by reducing the time of polymerization process to less than 1 h. It also increased the platinum (Pt) chelating rate with PDA, which was about 12 times faster than the traditional photo-oxidation method. Compared with the electrodes of the same size based on Ti/Pt sputtering, the impedance of the proposed PDA/TiO2/PtNW coated electrode was as low as 0.0968 ± 0.0054 kΩ at 1 kHz (reduction of 99.74%). An extremely high cathodic charge storage capacity (CSCc) up to 234.4 ± 3.16 mC cm–2 was also observed, which was about 106.5 and 1.6 times higher than that of Ti/Pt and PDA/PtNW electrodes, respectively. In addition to that, significant photocurrent polarization responses were presented for PDA/TiO2/PtNW electrodes with a stable current of −136.1 μA, exhibiting excellent charge transfer and UV absorption capacities. This co-deposition method has demonstrated great potential to speed up the polymerization process and enhance the electrical performance for flexible electrodes.

Facile solvothermal synthesis of ultrafine platinum nanowires on carbon nanotubes to enhance hydrogen evolution performance

Chang-An Zhou,Meiling Ran,Huixi Chen,Tingting Ma,Chunhui Wu,Hong Zhang,Lei Song,Chao Wang,Kui Ma,Hairong Yue

Ultrafine platinum nanowires have drawn considerable attention due to their promising applications in electrocatalytic fields. Despite the numerous reports on Pt nanostructures, the one-pot synthesis of ultrafine Pt nanowires on conductive substrate still remains challenge. Herein, we demonstrate the facile solvothermal synthesis of ultrafine Pt nanowires with an average diameter of 1.4 nm and an average length of 16.8 nm in-situ assembled on muti-walled carbon nanotubes. The surface properties of MWCNT, solvent composition, and reductants determine the final morphology of Pt NWs. The Pt NWs/CNT prepared under optimal synthesis conditions are demonstrated to be a potential electrocatalyst for acidic HER, exhibiting only 64 mV overpotential at 100 mA/cm 2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 . The mass activity of 15.2 A/mg Pt at an overpotential of 70 mV and the exchange current density of 0.53 mA/cm 2 Pt are 2.2 and 1.3 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C, respectively. DFT calculations reveal the planar-sites on Pt nanowires exhibit appropriate H adsorption free energy, and the abundant edge-sites of ultrafine structure ensure optimal H adsorption behavior at high coverage, thus contributing to the excellent HER performance of Pt NWs.

Bi-functional porous carbon spheres derived from pectin as electrode material for supercapacitors and support material for Pt nanowires towards electrocatalytic methanol and ethanol oxidation

Yang Fan,Pei-Fang Liu,Zi-Juan Yang,Tong-Wu Jiang,Kai-Li Yao,Ran Han,Xin-Xin Huo,Yun-Yi Xiong

Porous carbon spheres (PCSs) are prepared via a facile hydrothermal carbonization and chemical activation route with pectin as the biomass precursor. The as-obtained PCSs present a large specific surface area (2440   m 2   g −1 ), well-balanced micro/mesoporosity with narrow pore size distribution and high content of oxygen-containing functional groups. The structure features make the PCSs an ideal electrode material for electrochemical energy storage . As electrode material for supercapacitors , the PCSs exhibit a high specific capacitance, good rate capacity and cycling stability. Furthermore, the PCSs show attractive property as support material for Pt electrocatalysts . Pt nanowires (PtNWs) grown on the PCSs interconnect with each other to form a porous nanowires network structure. The three-dimensional (3D) hybrid catalyst material consisting of PtNWs network supported on PCSs exhibit superior catalytic activity and stability towards both methanol and ethanol electro-oxidation in acidic media. In addition, owing to the rich presence of surface oxygen groups on PCSs, the CO-poisoning tolerance of the supported Pt nanowires is greatly promoted.

Ultrathin platinum nanowires grown on single-layered nickel hydroxide with high hydrogen evolution activity

Yin Huajie,Zhao Shenlong,Zhao Kun,Muqsit Abdul,Tang Hongjie,Chang Lin,Zhao Huijun,Gao Yan,Tang Zhiyong

Design and synthesis of effective electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline environments is critical to reduce energy losses in alkaline water electrolysis. Here we report a hybrid nanomaterial comprising of one-dimensional ultrathin platinum nanowires grown on two-dimensional single-layered nickel hydroxide. Judicious surface chemistry to generate the fully exfoliated nickel hydroxide single layers is explored to be the key for controllable growth of ultrathin platinum nanowires with diameters of about 1.8 nm. Impressively, this hybrid nanomaterial exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction in alkaline solution, which outperforms currently reported catalysts, and the obviously improved catalytic stability. We believe that this work may lead towards the development of single-layered metal hydroxide-based hybrid materials for applications in catalysis and energy conversion.

Study on the growth of platinum nanowires as cathode catalysts in proton exchange membrane fuel cells

Wang Ruiqing,Cao Xiaolan,Sui Sheng,Li Bing,Li Qingfeng

The platinum nanowires have been verified to be a promising catalyst to promote the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. In this paper, accurately controlled growth of nanowires in a carbon matrix is achieved for reducing Pt loading. The effects of formic acid concentration and reaction temperature on the morphology and size of the Pt nanowires, as well as their electrochemical performances in a single cell, are investigated. The results showed that the increase in the formic acid concentration results in a volcano trend with the length of Pt nanowires. With increasing reduction temperature, the diameter of Pt nanowires increases while Pt particles evolve from one-dimensional to zero-dimensional up to 40 °C. A mechanism of the Pt nanowires growth is proposed. The optimized Pt nanowires electrode exhibits a power density (based on electrochemical active surface area) 79% higher than conventional Pt/C one. The control strategy obtained contributes to the design and control of novel nanostructures in nano-synthesis and catalyst applications.

Gold-platinum bimetallic nanowires on graphene oxide nanosheets for oxygen reduction reaction

Jia-li Liu,Xin-xin Song,Xiao-Rong Li,Ping Chen,Zhipeng Cheng,Hui Zhong,Haiyan Qian

In this paper, gold-platinum nanowires (AuPt NWs) were successfully loaded on graphene oxide (GO) to obtain graphene oxide-funded platinum bimetallic nanowire (GO/AuPt NWs) composites, which were used as catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The morphology, crystal structure and elemental composition of GO/AuPt NWs were investigated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Cyclic voltammetry (CV), linear scanning voltammetry (LSV) and chronoamperometry (I-T) were used to evaluate the electrochemical activity and stability of ORR in alkaline media. The prepared GO/AuPt NWs exhibit high electrocatalytic activity and a major four-electron pathway to the ORR. Moreover, it also exhibit superior stability and methanol resistance compared to commercial Pt-C (10 wt%) catalysts, making them a promising nanoelectrocatalyst for fuel cells and other electrochemical devices. This simple, straightforward and versatile approach is important for the preparation of well-formed high-performance metal nanocatalysts on support materials.

Template- and ligand-free synthesis of Pt nanowire arrays as methanol oxidation electrocatalyst

Jiaxin Luo,Jie He,Hongyan Li,Shutian Wang,Yangyang Li,Meng Shi,Hongyu Chen,Yawen Wang

Pt-based nanowires are promising catalyst materials, yet synthesizing ultrathin and ultralong Pt-based nanowires remains quite challenging. Templates or ligands are often indispensable to the one-dimensional (1D) growth of metal nanowires. Herein, a template-less and ligand-less electrodeposition method was developed to grow Pt nanowires arrays (Pt NWAs) with tunable lengths and diameters on Si wafer, a bulk flat substrate. Comprehensively investigation revealed an unconventional active-surface-growth mechanism: instead of small organic molecule ligand, the surface-adsorbed H + functionalize as “ligand” and passivate most of the Pt surface; and the 1D growth results from the continuous preferential deposition at the rest surface that bound to the wafer substrate and less passivated. The growth of the nanowires at various deposition potentials and pH was assessed to illustrate the versatility of the growth. Furthermore, the synthesis was extended to carbon paper substrate, and the as-prepared Pt NWA-supported carbon paper can be directly applied as catalytic electrode. Owing to the unique nanowire array morphology, the Pt NWAs with the length of 650 nm exhibited an unusual deferring of the turn-off potential at 1.76 V (vs. RHE), as well as a current density of 241.4 mA cm −2 that is almost twice to that of the Pt/C, in methanol oxidation reaction.

1D-2D hybridization: Nanoarchitectonics for grain boundary-rich platinum nanowires coupled with MXene nanosheets as efficient methanol oxidation electrocatalysts

Wei Meng,Haiyan He,Lu Yang,Quanguo Jiang,Brian Yuliarto,Yusuke Yamauchi,Xingtao Xu,Huajie Huang

Although a direct methanol fuel cell with high energy utilization efficiency and low hazardous emission has broad application prospects in various energy-related fields, the insufficient methanol oxidation activity as well as the short service life of the anode catalysts continue to hinder its large-scale commercialization. Herein, we demonstrate a convenient and robust approach for the controllable synthesis of 1D grain boundary-rich Pt nanowires strongly coupled with ultrathin Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene nanosheets (Pt NWs/MX). Such a unique architectural design endows the heterojunction catalysts with a series of structural merits, including large accessible surface area, stable interconnected Pt networks, numerous grain boundary sites, ameliorative electronic structure, and excellent electron conductivity. Consequently, the optimized Pt NWs/MX catalyst exhibits a unique methanol oxidation performance with a large electrochemically active surface area of 105.5 m 2 g −1 , a high mass (specific) activity of 1621.5 mA mg −1 (1.6 mA cm −2 ), as well as superior long-term durability, making it more competitive than conventional Pt nanoparticle/carbon catalysts with the same Pt loading.

An electrochemiluminescence immunosensor for myoglobin using an indium tin oxide glass electrode modified with gold nanoparticles and platinum nanowires

Zou Bin,Cheng Hongying,Tu Yifeng

An electrochemiluminescence (ECL) immunosensor was fabricated to detect myoglobin in human serum. Specifically, gold nanoparticles and platinum nanowires were deposited onto indium tin oxide-coated glass with 3-aminopropyl-trimethoxysilane as the linker to fabricate a basal electrode. The gold nanoparticles had a diameter of approximately 5 nm, and the platinum nanowires had diameters of approximately 2–3 nm and lengths on the order of dozens of nanometers. The nanomaterials effectively enhanced the ECL of luminol and enabled it to emit strong light, even in a weakly basic environment. A myoglobin antibody was then covalently immobilized on the electrode. Upon formation of the immunocomplex, the intensity of the luminol ECL was reduced. Under the optimized experimental conditions, the intensity of the ECL linearly decreased with the logarithm of the myoglobin concentration over the range of 3.0 ng·mL −1 to 0.32 μg·mL −1 , and the detection limit was 0.11 ng·mL −1 . Schematic of an electrochemiluminescent immunosensor for myoglobin using gold nanoparticles and platinum nanowires as supporting matrix on indium tin oxide coated glass. It can detect myoglobin in human serum with a detection limit of 0.11 ng·mL −1 and high selectivity.

Bipolar hydrogen generation via furfural-water co-electrolysis over bifunctional CuPt catalysts

Haiyan Ji,Zhaowen Wu,Tong Li,Guidong Ju,Huaming Li,Yong Wang,Hui Xu,Junfeng Liu

The high energy requirements of water electrolysis, driven largely by the sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), hinder its widespread application for hydrogen production. This study presents an innovative alternative by replacing OER with the thermodynamically favorable furfural oxidation reaction (FOR), utilizing a CuPt nanowire (NW)/Cu electrocatalyst. The incorporation of Pt into Cu NWs significantly enhances FOR activity, enabling the production of value-added furoic acid alongside hydrogen gas at reduced voltages. The CuPt NWs/Cu catalyst also exhibits excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in alkaline media. By employing CuPt NWs/Cu as both the anodic and cathodic catalyst, we develop a two-electrode electrolyzer that integrates FOR and HER, allowing simultaneous hydrogen production at both electrodes. Operating at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , the system requires an exceptionally low cell voltage of 0.39 V and an electricity consumption of 0.47 kWh per m 3 H 2 , demonstrating its efficiency for energy-saving bipolar hydrogen generation.

Platinum nanowires/MXene nanosheets/porous carbon ternary nanocomposites for in situ monitoring of dopamine released from neuronal cells

Xueqian Xiao,Wei Ni,Yang Yang,Qinhua Chen,Yulin Zhang,Yujie Sun,Qiming Liu,Guo-jun Zhang,Qunfeng Yao,Shaowei Chen

Dopamine is an important neurotransmitter in the body and closely related to many neurodegenerative diseases. Therefore, the detection of dopamine is of great significance for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases, screening of drugs and unraveling of relevant pathogenic mechanisms. However, the low concentration of dopamine in the body and the complexity of the matrix make the accurate detection of dopamine challenging. Herein, an electrochemical sensor is constructed based on ternary nanocomposites consisting of one-dimensional Pt nanowires, two-dimensional MXene nanosheets , and three-dimensional porous carbon . The Pt nanowires exhibit excellent catalytic activity due to the abundant grain boundaries and highly undercoordinated atoms; MXene nanosheets not only facilitate the growth of Pt nanowires, but also enhance the electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity ; and the porous carbon helps induce significant adsorption of dopamine on the electrode surface. In electrochemical tests, the ternary nanocomposite-based sensor achieves an ultra-sensitive detection of dopamine (S/N = 3) with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 28 nM, satisfactory selectivity and excellent stability. Furthermore, the sensor can be used for the detection of dopamine in serum and in situ monitoring of dopamine release from PC12 cells. Such a highly sensitive nanocomposite sensor can be exploited for in situ monitoring of important neurotransmitters at the cellular level, which is of great significance for related drug screening and mechanistic studies .

A one-pot gold seed-assisted synthesis of gold/platinum wire nanoassemblies and their enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the oxidation of oxalic acid

Juan Bai,Chun-Long Fang,Zong-Huai Liu,Yu Chen

Three-dimensional (3D) noble metal nanoassemblies composed of one-dimensional (1D) nanowires have been attracting much interest due to the unique physical and chemical properties of 1D nanowires as well as the particular interconnected open-pore structure of 3D nanoassemblies. In this work, well-defined Au/Pt wire nanoassemblies were synthesized by using a facile NaBH4 reduction method in the presence of a branched form of polyethyleneimine (PEI). A study of the growth mechanism indicated the morphology of the final product to be highly related to the molecular structure of the polymeric amine. Also, the preferred Pt-on-Pt deposition contributed to the formation of the 1D Pt nanowires. The Au/Pt wire nanoassemblies were functionalized with PEI at the same time that these nanoassemblies were synthesized due to the strong N–Pt bond. The chemically functionalized Au/Pt wire nanoassemblies exhibited better electrocatalytic activity for the electro-oxidation of oxalic acid than did commercial Pt black.
