Powerful synergy: efficient Pt–Au–Si nanocomposites as state-of-the-art catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution

Binbin Jiang,Zeyuan Tang,Fan Liao,Haiping Lin,Shunkai Lu,Youyong Li,Mingwang Shao

The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a fundamental electrochemical reaction to produce hydrogen gas from the electrolysis of water, and has been regarded as an attractive solution to many energy challenges. In the past few decades, platinum has been widely demonstrated to split water into hydrogen gas at high reaction rates and low overpotentials. Nevertheless, decreasing the loading of Pt in the designed electrocatalysts is very significant. However, with low Pt loading, it is challenging to maintain excellent catalytic performance. Here we report a Pt–Au–Si ternary nanocomposite as a highly active catalyst for the HER. The optimal composition of Pt–Au–Si was determined to be 7.2 : 31.3 : 61.5 (Pt : Au : Si, mass ratio) with a Tafel slope of only 24 mV dec−1. To be specific, the mass activity of the Pt–Au–SiNW-2 catalyst was 6.5 fold that of a 40 wt% Pt/C catalyst at an overpotential of 60 mV. More importantly, the cathodic current density even surpassed 40 wt% Pt/C when the overpotential was larger than 0.17 V (the corresponding current density was 108 mA cm−2). The outstanding catalytic performance might be derived from the synergy of the respective properties of the three components: the fast hydrogen adsorption rate on Pt, the quick migration of the adsorbed hydrogen atoms on Au and the rapid hydrogen evolution rate on Si. This research opens up a novel strategy to prepare highly efficient catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reactions.

Separation of Pt(IV), Pd(II), Ru(III), and Rh(III) from chloride medium using liquid–liquid extraction with mixed imidazolium-based ionic liquids

Yan Yan,Qi Wang,Zeyang Xiang,Yanzhao Yang

A reasonable project was presented for the extraction and separation of Pt(IV), Pd(II), Ru(III), and Rh(III) from the mixed imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) [C6mim]Cl, [C6mim][NTf2], and [C6mim][DDTC]. Pt(IV) was first separated from other three platinum group metals with a mixture of [C6mim]Cl and [C6mim][NTf2]. Then, separation of Pd(II) and Ru(III) from Rh(III) was realized by changing the concentration of [C6mim][DDTC]. Back-extraction of Pt(IV), Pd(II), and Ru(III) from loaded hydrophobic phase and the recovery of Rh(III) in aqueous phase were also investigated. Mechanisms between Pd(II)/Ru(III) and [C6mim][DDTC] were further explored using ultraviolet spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR), the method of continuous variations, ab initio quantum chemical studies, and X-ray crystallographic analysis. The results afford more directions for extracting and separating metals by introducing devisable functionalized group into ILs.

Photothermal Catalysis of Cellulose to Prepare Levulinic Acid-Rich Bio-Oil

Bolun Li,Mengyan Wang,Huixiang Luo,Kaina Li,Yanlong Jia,Mingjie Fu,Chenyu Jiang,Shuangquan Yao,Yongjun Yin

As a carbon-neutral and renewable raw material, cellulose can be transformed into biomass fuels to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels and carbon dioxide emissions. In view of harsh reaction conditions, low selectivity of product, and easy deactivation of the catalyst, this study studied the use of photothermal catalytic technology to convert cellulose into bio-oil rich in levulinic acid. It was discovered that a synergistic effect between heating and photocatalysis is present in cellulose degradation. Different metals were loaded on carbon nanotubes doped with titanium dioxide to prepare different photothermal catalysts, and their catalytic effects on cellulose were compared. It was found that TiO2-CNT loaded with platinum metal exhibited the highest catalytic performance. By adopting Pt/TiO2-CNT as the catalyst, the conversion rate of bio-oil reached 99.44%, and the selectivity of LA reached 44.41% at 220 °C for 3 h. As the photothermal catalysis increased the H/C ratio and decreased the O/C ratio of the liquid product, the calorific value reached 21.01 MJ/kg. This study can promote the further industrial application of lignocellulose to prepare fuel oil and decrease the environmental pollution caused by the massive consumption of fossil fuels.

Platinum covalent shell cross-linked micelles designed to deliver doxorubicin for synergistic combination cancer therapy

Caiying Zhu,Jingjing Xiao,Ming Tang,Hua Feng,Wulian Chen,Ming Du

The preparation of polymer therapeutics capable of controlled release of multiple chemotherapeutic drugs has remained a tough problem in synergistic combination cancer therapy. Herein, a novel dual-drug co-delivery system carrying doxorubicin (DOX) and platinum(IV) (Pt[IV]) was developed. An amphiphilic diblock copolymer, PCL-b-P(OEGMA-co-AzPMA), was synthesized and used as a nanoscale drug carrier in which DOX and Pt(IV) could be packaged together. The copolymers were shell cross-linked by Pt(IV) prodrug via a click reaction. Studies on the in vitro drug release and cellular uptake of the dual-drug co-delivery system showed that the micelles were effectively taken up by the cells and simultaneously released drugs in the cells. Futhermore, the co-delivery polymer nanoparticles caused much higher cell death in HeLa and A357 tumor cells than either the free drugs or single-drug-loaded micelles at the same dosage, exhibiting a synergistic combination of DOX and Pt(IV). The results obtained with the shell cross-linked micelles based on an anticancer drug used as a cross-linking linkage suggested a promising application of the micelles for multidrug delivery in combination cancer therapy.

Metallic Pt and PtOx dual-cocatalyst-loaded WO3 for photocatalytic production of peroxydisulfate and hydrogen peroxide

Xie Wenwen,Huang Zeai,Wang Ruiqi,Wen Cheng,Zhou Ying

Photocatalytic production of green oxidation reagents as an economical and environmental-friendly process is a promising strategy to replace the traditional production processes. In the present study, a series of 1.0 wt% Pt/WO 3 photocatalysts with different surface chemical states of Pt were successfully fabricated. The different surface metallic Pt (Pt 0 ) and oxidized Pt (PtO x ) ratios on WO 3 showed significant effects on the photocatalytic activities for strong oxidants of peroxydisulfate ( \( {\text{S}}_{ 2} {\text{O}}_{8}^{2 - } \) ) and hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) formations. It is proposed that surface Pt 0 and PtO x functioned as reduction site for O 2 reduction to H 2 O and oxidation site for H 2 O oxidation to H 2 O 2 , respectively, during the photocatalytic process. As a result, a higher surface composition of Pt 0 prepared using photodeposition (PD) method led to the formation of higher amount of \( {\text{S}}_{ 2} {\text{O}}_{8}^{2 - } \) . On the other hand, PtO x -loaded WO 3 using impregnation (IM) method showed significant formations of \( {\text{S}}_{ 2} {\text{O}}_{8}^{2 - } \) and H 2 O 2 simultaneously. This work provided a new idea for the design of noble metal Pt-supported WO 3 for efficiently photocatalytic generation of \( {\text{S}}_{ 2} {\text{O}}_{8}^{2 - } \) and H 2 O 2 .

Synthesis of PtAu/TiO2 nanowires with carbon skin as highly active and highly stable electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction

Xiaoting Deng,Shaofeng Yin,Xiaobo Wu,Min Sun,Zhiyong Xie,Qizhong Huang

To enhance the activity and durability of platinum (Pt) or platinum-based catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs), fabrication of low-cost platinum catalysts with durable structure is necessary. Here, a series of one-dimensional (1D) platinum-gold/titanium dioxide nanowires (PtAu/TiO 2 NWs) catalysts with different Pt/Au/Ti ratios were synthesized by electrospinning, and the microstructure as well as its electrochemical properties for ORR were investigated. The results illustrate that PtAu/TiO 2 NWs indicate a parabolic-type ORR performance as a function of compositions . The optimized Pt 1 Au 1 /(TiO 2 ) 1 NWs exhibited 4.19 times in mass activity and 2.82 times in SA when compared with commercial Pt on carbon catalyst (20% Pt/C). In addition, the stability test shows that the ECSA of Pt 1 Au 1/ (TiO 2 ) 1 NWs present almost 20% decrease, while the 20%Pt/C drops more than 40% at the same condition. The extraordinary activity of Pt 1 Au 1/ (TiO 2 ) 1 NWs could be attributed to the synergistic effect of TiO 2 and the durability attributed to Au and C skin. The nanowires with larger specific area show that the Pt electronic structure can be changed by the neighbouring TiO 2 , further decreasing the d-band gap to enhance catalytic activity.

Surface Engineering of Porphyrin Coordination on a Carbon Nanotube for Efficient Hydrogen Evolution

Lidong Wang,Zhaosheng Zhang,Meng Li,Qiuhan Li,Bo Wang,Shuwen Wang,Huang Zhou,Boyang Mao

Graphical HER electrocatalysis : We developed a novel Pt(II)-porphyrin based catalyst for HER electrocatalysis, its optimised performance can be quantitatively designed in molecular level. The optimized Pt(II)-porphyrin loading and precisely morphology control could be fine-tuned and quantitatively premeditated by using fluorescence and UV-vis titration based on the unique π–π interactions behaviour of the porphyrin. This study provides a new approach for preparing a highly active and stable HER catalyst, which could potentially be extended to other reactions to improve the utilization efficiency of precious metal catalysts. Functionalised porphyrins have attracted considerable attention owing to their ability to coordinate with numerous metal ions. We design and synthesize a novel composite system based on functionalised Pt(II)-porphyrin and multiwalled carbon nanotubes for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis. Rather than qualitatively integrating porphyrin with carbon nanotubes, the optimized Pt(II)-porphyrin loading and precisely morphology control could be fine-tuned and quantitatively premeditated by using fluorescence and UV-vis titration based on the unique π–π interactions behaviour of the porphyrin for the first time. The as-prepared composites exhibit superior HER catalytic activity with an overpotential of 35 mV for an electrocatalytic current density of j=−10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 32.3 mV dec −1 . Moreover, such catalysts do not exhibit observable activity decay after a 1000-cycle stability test, thus demonstrating their excellent durability. To further reduce Pt loading to achieve cost efficiency, we develop a Pt−Co bimetallic HER catalyst with an ultra-low platinum content through a straightforward synthesis pathway with high catalytic activity and stability. This study provides a new approach for preparing a highly active and stable HER catalyst, which could potentially be extended to other reactions to improve the utilization efficiency of precious metal catalysts.

Pt/CNT Micro-Nanorobots Driven by Glucose Catalytic Decomposition

Hao Wang,Jiacheng Kan,Xin Zhang,Chenyi Gu,Zhan Yang

Swimming micro-nanorobots have attracted researchers’ interest in potential medical applications on target therapy, biosensor, drug carrier, and others. At present, the experimental setting of the swimming micro-nanorobots was mainly studied in pure water or H2O2 solution. This paper presents a micro-nanorobot that applied glucose in human body fluid as driving fuel. Based on the catalytic properties of the anode and cathode materials of the glucose fuel cell, platinum (Pt) and carbon nanotube (CNT) were selected as the anode and cathode materials, respectively, for the micro-nanorobot. The innovative design adopted the method of template electrochemical and chemical vapor deposition to manufacture the Pt/CNT micro-nanorobot structure. Both the scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to observe the morphology of the sample, and its elements were analyzed by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Through a large number of experiments in a glucose solution and according to Stoker’s law of viscous force and Newton’s second law, we calculated the driving force of the fabricated micro-nanorobot. It was concluded that the structure of the Pt/CNT micro-nanorobot satisfied the required characteristics of both biocompatibility and motion.

Unveiling excited state energy transfer and charge transfer in a host/guest coordination cage

Rui-Ling Zhang,Yang Yang,Song-Qiu Yang,Ke-Li Han

Host–guest charge transfer (HGCT) plays a key role in applications from solar energy conversion to photocatalysis. Herein, a HGCT system, a pillared Pt(II) metallacage with encapsulated coronene was synthesized and the ultrafast excited-state dynamics were investigated by combination of femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy, nanosecond transient emission spectrocopy and quantum chemistry calculations. Two significant ultrafast dynamic processes were unveiled: (i) charge transfer from a singlet local excited (1LE) state associated with the coronene moiety to a 1HGCT state with τ = 9.5 ps; and (ii) triplet–triplet energy transfer from a high 3HGCT state to a 3LE state with τ = 139.5 ps. The resulting long-lived species, the lowest 3LE and 3HGCT states eventually decay to the ground state in microsecond time scales of 5.2 and 43.4 μs respectively. Moreover, a clear mechanism depicting the main excited-state decay pathways connecting the initial photoexcited transients with the resulting species was proposed.

Study of the Relationship between Metal–Support Interactions and the Electrocatalytic Performance of Pt/Ti4O7 with Different Loadings

Xiuyu Sun,Zhenwei Wang,Wei Yan,Chuangan Zhou

The application potential of Pt/Ti4O7has been reported, but the lack of research on the relationship between Pt loading, MSI, and catalytic activity hinders further development. Micron-sized Ti4O7powders synthesized by a thermal reduction method under an H2atmosphere were used as a support material for Pt-based catalysts. Using a modified polyol method, Pt/Ti4O7-5, Pt/Ti4O7-10, and Pt/Ti4O7-20 with different mass ratios (Pt to Pt/Ti4O7is 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) were successfully synthesized. Uniformly dispersed platinum nanoparticles exhibit disparate morphologies, rod-like for Pt/Ti4O7-5 and approximately spherical for Pt/Ti4O7-10 and Pt/Ti4O7-20. Small-angle deflections and lattice reconstruction induced by strong metal–support interactions were observed in Pt/Ti4O7-5, which indicated the formation of a new phase at the interface. However, lattice distortions and dislocations for higher loading samples imply the existence of weak metal–support interactions. A possible mechanism is proposed to explain the different morphologies and varying metal–support interactions (MSI). With X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, spectrums of Pt and Ti display apparent shifts in binding energy compared with commercial Pt-C and non-platinized Ti4O7, which can properly explain the changes in absorption ability and oxygen reduction reaction activity, as described in the electrochemical results. The synthetic method, Pt loading, and surface coverage of the support play an important role in the adjustment of MSI, which gives significant guidance for better utilizing MSI to prepare the target catalyst. Keywords:platinum;titanium suboxide;electrocatalyst;SMSI

Electron-distribution control via Pt/NC and MoC/NC dual junction: Boosted hydrogen electro-oxidation and theoretical study

Feng Zhou,Xiaofeng Ke,Yihuang Chen,Mei Zhao,Yun Yang,Youqing Dong,Chao Zou,Xi'an Chen,Huile Jin,Lijie Zhang,Shun Wang

The scarcity, high cost and susceptibility to CO of Platinum severely restrict its application in alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR). Hybridizing Pt with other transition metals provides an effective strategy to modulate its catalytic HOR performance, but at the cost of mass activity due to the coverage of modifiers on Pt surface. Herein, we constructed dual junctions’ Pt/nitrogen-doped carbon (Pt/NC) and δ-MoC/NC to modify electronic structure of Pt via interfacial electron transfer to acquire Pt-MoC@NC catalyst with electron-deficient Pt nanoparticles, simultaneously endowing it with high mass activity and durability of alkaline HOR. Moreover, the unique structure of Pt-MoC@NC endows Pt with a high CO-tolerance at 1,000 ppm CO/H 2 , a quality that commercial Pt-C catalyst lacks. The theoretical calculations not only confirm the diffusion of electrons from Pt/NC to MoC/NC could occur, but also demonstrate the negative shift of Pt d -band center for the optimized binding energies of *H, *OH and CO.

Quantifying and understanding the tilt of a Pt Janus active colloid near solid walls

Jiayu Liu,Yankai Xu,Zihan Qiao,Shanshan Li,Xing Ma,Ting Kuang,H. P. Zhang,Wei Wang

Active colloids powered by self-generated gradients are influenced by nearby solid boundaries, leading to their reorientation. In this study, the tilt angles (the angle between where an active colloid moves and where it faces) were measured to be 13.3° and −33.9° for 5 μm polystyrene microspheres half coated with 10 nm Pt caps moving in 5% H2O2 along the bottom and top glass wall, respectively, indicating that the colloids moved with their PS (forward) caps tilted slightly toward the wall. The speeds and tilt angles of Pt Janus colloids increased consistently with increasing H2O2 concentration (0.5 to 10 v/v%) and Pt cap thickness (5 to 50 nm). We propose that the tilt results from a balance between gravitational torque (caused by the Pt cap's weight) and chemical activity-induced torque (from self-generated chemical gradients), qualitatively supported by finite element simulations based on self-electrophoresis. Our findings are useful for understanding how chemically active colloids move in, and interact with, their environment.
