Ni/La 2 O 3 nanocatalyst with Pt and Rh content as low as 5 mol%, respectively, is successfully synthesized by a facile co-reduction method in the presence of hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride aqueous solution under ambient atmosphere. Interestingly, the resulted Ni/La 2 O 3 catalyst with low cost exhibits excellent catalytic activity to dehydrogenation of hydrous hydrazine (N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O), producing hydrogen with 100% selectivity at room temperature (298 K), which represents a promising step toward the practical application for N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O system on fuel cells.

In this paper, an amperometric gas sensor based on proton exchange membrane (Nafion) was fabricated for H 2 S detection at room temperature . Pt-Rh nanoparticles loaded on carbon fibers, as sensing electrode , was prepared by chemical reduction method, and membrane electrode assemble (MEA) was fabricated using hot-pressing method. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) were used to analyze the structure and morphology of the fabricated electrode material. The effect of the weight ratio of Pt to Rh on the performance of the sensor was investigated and the results showed that the sensing performance was best when the ratio of Pt to Rh was 1:1. Moreover, the sensitivity had been significantly improved due to the use of carbon fibers pretreated by nitric acid, increasing from 0.158 μA/ppm to 0.191 μA/ppm. The present sensor could detect H 2 S at levels as low as 0.1 ppm with a −20 nA response and had a good linear relationship in the range of 0.1 to 200 ppm H 2 S. In addition, this amperometric H 2 S sensor displayed fast response-recovery rate as well as excellent selectivity and stability.

Liquid ammonia electrolysis is conducted out at ambient temperature using different ammonium salt electrolytes with and without the reference electrode. It is determined that electrolytes containing NH 4 + increase the current density and reduce the solution resistance. Moreover, ammonium salts of NH 4 Br, NH 4 NO 3 and NH 4 Cl preserve >80% current efficiency and a 0.6–0.8 mL min −1 average rate of H 2 generation during chronopotentiometry tests at 120 mA cm −2 for 3 h. A minimum electrolysis voltage ( E min ) of ca . 1.2 V is required for the NH 4 Cl electrolyte when using Pt-foil as the anode and cathode . To decrease the overpotential of the anode reaction, five types of electrocatalysts were prepared and characterized: Pt-black, Rh, Pt–Ir, Rh–Pt and Ph–Pt–Ir alloys. Trimetallic Rh–Pt–Ir and bimetallic Pt–Ir, Rh–Pt (1:1) alloy electrodes exhibit a combined benefit of better activity and minimized deactivation. The ternary Rh–Pt–Ir alloy anode shows the best electrocatalytic activity with the lowest E min of ca . 0.47 V and highest current density of 46.9 mA cm −2 at 2.0 V. In comparison with the Pt-foil anode, the E min is reduced by two-thirds, and the current density is increased two-fold.

The electrochemical oxidation of ethylene glycol (EG), which is favorable for replacing the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in thermodynamics, realizes energy-saving hydrogen evolution and also produces high-value chemical products of glycolic acid. Under the guidance of this concept, PtRh nanowires with Rh atom modification (PtRh0.02@Rh NWs), which exhibited excellent properties during the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and ethylene glycol evolution reaction (EGOR), were designed and synthesized by controlling the reduction rate of metal precursor through a simple one-step solvothermal reduction. The interface strain effect produced by the metal co-doping effectively adjusted the electronic structure, contributing to introducing the heteroatom active center and inducing lattice strain, thereby achieving excellent electrocatalytic performance. The obtained PtRh0.02@Rh NWs exhibited excellent HER property with an extremely low overpotential of 30.6 and 45.8 mV, and Tafel slope of 39.1 and 39.5 mV dec−1 in alkaline water and seawater electrolytes, respectively, as well as outstanding EGOR properties with peak current density of 1.25 and 1.17 A mg−1, respectively. Additionally, the PtRh0.02@Rh NWs showed superior stability compared to that of commercial platinum black obtained from Johnson Matthey Corporation (JM-Pt black). When using PtRh0.02@Rh NWs as biofunctional materials for the HER in the cathode and the EGOR in the anode, a cell voltage of only 0.66 V for PtRh0.02@Rh NWs (HER)‖PtRh0.02@Rh NWs (EGOR) achieved a current density of 10 mA cm−2, which was much smaller than that of PtRh0.02@Rh NWs (HER)‖PtRh0.02@Rh NWs (OER) at 1.57 V. The results of electrochemical in situ Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the synthesized PtRh0.02@Rh NWs promoted the production of high-value glycolic acid when EG was dehydrogenated to form C2 intermediates. The Rh atoms modified on the surface of the Pt nanowires provided an effective strain effect to optimize the active sites, which creates a universal strategy for the design of highly efficient and durable bifunctional catalysts.

Rationally designing and manipulating composition and morphology of precious metal-based bimetallic nanostructures can markedly enhance their electrocatalytic performance, including selectivity, activity, and durability. We herein report the synthesis of bimetallic PtRh alloy nanodendrites (ANDs) with tunable composition by a facile complex-reduction synthetic method under hydrothermal conditions. The structural/morphologic features, formation mechanism, and electrocatalytic performance of PtRh ANDs are investigated thoroughly by various physical characterization and electrochemical methods. The preformed Rh crystal nuclei effectively catalyze the reduction of Pt2+ precursor, resulting in PtRh alloy generation due to the catalytic growth and atoms interdiffusion process. The Pt atoms deposition distinctly interferes in Rh atoms deposition on Rh crystal nuclei, resulting in dendritic morphology of PtRh ANDs. For the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), PtRh ANDs display the chemical composition and solution pH co-dependent electrocatalytic activity. Because of the alloy effect and particular morphologic feature, Pt1Rh1 ANDs with optimized composition exhibit better reactivity and stability for the EOR than commercial Pt nanocrystals electrocatalyst.

Water pollution caused by organic pollutants has aroused great concern to earth sustainability in the last several decades. Herein, a facile one-pot solvothermal approach was developed to construct bimetallic platinum-rhodium alloyed nano-multipods (PtRh ANMPs) in oleylamine (OAm) by adopting creatinine and cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as the co-structure-directing agents. The as-fabricated nanocatalyst exhibited extraordinary catalytic behaviors towards 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) and rhodamine B (RhB) reduction by sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ). Impressively, the resultant catalyst showed highly facilitated rate constant ( k : 0.209/0.354 min −1 ) and turnover frequency (TOF: 1.0 × 10 −3 /0.44 × 10 −3 mol g −1 min −1 ) towards 4-NP and RhB reduction in comparison with commercial Pt black under the same conditions. This research offers some valuable insights for facile preparation of advanced nanostructures as efficient and recyclable catalyst in environmental remediation field.

The development of highly active and stable catalysts is a critical challenge which affects the practical application of the direct methanol fuel cells. Alloying Pt with other metals is an effective strategy to form the bimetallic or trimetallic catalysts, which not only decreases the consumption of Pt but also optimizes the electronic structure of Pt, in turn enhancing the catalytic activity. Herein, we use a facile one-pot solvothermal reduction method to synthesize Ag nanocubes (NCs) enclosed by PtRh nanoparticles as a trimetallic Ag@PtRhAg NC core–shell catalyst toward methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Notably, the core–shell structure is formed because of the presence of N,N-dimethylacetamide, which promotes the preferential reduction of Ag by reducing the reduction potential of Ag atoms. Meanwhile, the bromide ions originating from cetyltrimethylammonium bromide controlled the growth of the cubic morphology. Benefiting from the pleated exterior providing more active sites and the synergistic effect between Pt, Rh, and Ag, the mass and specific activities of Ag@PtRhAg NCs are 4.22 and 3.78 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively. More impressively, because of the better CO tolerance, Ag@PtRhAg NCs display strengthened durability by maintaining 84.9% mass activity after 1000 MOR cycles compared to the initial value. The present work provides a one-step strategy to synthesize a core–shell nanostructure catalyst for enhancing the MOR activity.

Traditional lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) using single-color labels has limitations in indistinct color change and restriction to the single-mode readout, which can hardly meet the demands of high-performance detection. Inspired by the multiple colors of the rainbow, we outline a multicolor LFIA using multibranched trimetallic platinum–rhodium-cobalt nanoparticles (PRCNPs) as signal labels to initiate multicolor conversion for diverse and multicolor readouts. The intrinsic properties of PRCNPs including their trimetallic composition, multibranched morphology, and strong absorption in the visible spectrum, confer advantages in catalytic activity, antibody utilization, and signal readout. Through the synergistic integration of the catalytic PRCNPs with the etching of gold nanorods, PRCNPs-LFIA enables multicolor readouts in a rainbow-like manner. PRCNPs-LFIA allows for qualitative analysis of acetamiprid, a widely-used neonicotinoid insecticide, at 2 ng mL −1 . It also provides semi-quantitative analysis based on the discrimination of at least 10 colors. Furthermore, quantitative analysis can be conducted across multiple color spaces within the range of 0.01-10 ng mL −1 , achieving a lowest detection result of 0.006 ng mL −1 . The recoveries of acetamiprid in food samples detected by PRCNPs-LFIA in grayscale and multiple color space modes are 87.35%-103.59%, 85.56%-114.33%, 86.14%-114.77%, and 87.81%-112.01%, respectively, with all coefficients of variation below 15%. These results demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of PRCNPs-LFIA in practical applications. Overall, this study illustrates the potential of multifunctional PRCNPs in the development of multicolor LFIA and broadens the biosensing strategies for point-of-care testing.
