Lead (Pb) is one of the top metal pollutants worldwide, and its distribution between liquid and solid phases of soils is strongly controlled by its adsorption on minerals, organic matter, and their composites. This paper presented the effect of fulvic acid (FA) coexistence on the distribution of Pb(II) at the solid–liquid interface of four minerals, which provided reference for how to use humic substances to remove toxic Pb(II) in soils. The free Pb 2+ of suspensions, measured by Pb ion selective electrode, was used to characterize the complexation of FA with Pb 2+ at various pH. The adsorption isotherms of Pb(II) by montmorillonite, kaolinite, goethite, and gibbsite with and without FA were studied with batch experiments. Results indicated that the free Pb 2+ decreased and complexed Pb(II) increased with the increase of FA concentration in Pb(II)-FA solutions, whether the initial concentration of Pb(II) was 0.1 or 1 mM. Pb 2+ hydrolysis was low and the free Pb 2+ concentration in pure lead solution without FA was generally unchanged with increasing solution pH at pH < 6.0. But free Pb 2+ decreased with the increase of pH in the presence of FA, suggesting that the complexation ability of FA with Pb 2+ increased with the increase of solution pH. The adsorption of Pb(II) by the minerals without FA followed the order: montmorillonite > kaolinite ≈ goethite > gibbsite at pH5.0. The Pb(II) adsorption by montmorillonite and kaolinite significantly enhanced with 1 g/L FA, while significantly inhibited with 3 g/L FA at low initial Pb(II) concentration. However, the effect of FA on Pb(II) adsorption by montmorillonite was greater than that of kaolinite, which was mainly related to the crystal layer structure, adsorption area, and cation exchange capacity of the minerals. The Pb(II) adsorption by goethite and gibbsite was significantly enhanced by the addition of both 1 g/L and 3 g/L FA, and the enhancement was more evident in goethite system. The effect of FA on the distribution of Pb(II) between solid and liquid phases of the minerals was determined by the factors such as the initial concentration ratio of FA to Pb(II), the adsorption capacity of minerals for FA, and the number of soluble complexes of FA with Pb 2+ . Therefore, the distribution of FA between solid and liquid of four minerals affected the distribution of Pb(II) between solid and liquid phases of the minerals greatly. The results can provide an important reference for understanding the distribution of Pb(II) and the dynamics and mobility of active components in polluted soils.

A n Fe@ZIF-8 composite, which combined the tailorable porosity of ZIF-8 with the versatile functionality of Fe nanoparticles ( n Fe), was synthesized for Pb(II) removal. Batch adsorption experiments showed that more than 95.3% of Pb(II) was removed from aqueous solution at an initial concentration of 50 mg L −1 when using n Fe@ZIF-8 within 60 min at pH value of 5. The mechanism of Pb(II) removal was studied via characterization of changes the morphology, size and composition of in n Fe@ZIF-8 before and after exposure the solutions containing Pb(II). Specifically, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) indicated that n Fe@ZIF-8 was successfully synthesized and also remained stable after Pb(II) removal. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) and Scanning electron microscopy-X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) both confirmed that Pb(II) was partially adhered onto the surface of n Fe@ZIF-8, where X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) specifically revealed the existence of Pb(0) on the surface. This indicated that Pb(II) was initially adsorbed onto the surface of n Fe@ZIF-8 and subsequently reduced to Pb(0). Moreover, Pb(II) removal fit well to kinetics of absorption and reduction. Finally, in practice, n Fe@ZIF-8 could remove 96.3% of Pb(II) from an electroplating wastewater.

In this study, EDTA-functionalized Fe 3 O 4 (Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -EDTA) was prepared by silanization reaction between N-(trimethoxysilylpropyl) ethylenediamine triacetic acid (EDTA-silane) and hydroxyl groups for Pb(II) and Cu(II) removal from aqueous solutions. Fe 3 O 4 @SiO 2 -EDTA composites were characterized using SEM, TEM, EDX, FTIR, XPS, TGA and saturated magnetization techniques. Maximum Pb(II) adsorption capacity was found to be 114.94 mg g −1 with SiO 2 /EDTA molar ratio of 2.5:1. The adsorption rate was significantly fast and the equilibrium was reached within 10 min. The optimum pH was recorded to be 5.0. The maximum adsorption capacity of the studied heavy metal ions calculated by Langmuir model followed the order: Cu(II) (0.58 mmol g −1 ) > Pb(II) (0.55 mmol g −1 ) ≈ Ni(II) (0.55 mmol g −1 ) > Cd(II) (0.45 mmol g −1 ). Moreover, Pb(II) and Cu(II) adsorption capacities were not significantly affected by co-existing cations and NOM. These results suggested that this adsorbent can be considered as a promising adsorbent to remove Pb(II) and Cu(II) from wastewaters.

The transport of Pb(II) or Cd(II) in subsurface has been studied in the literature; however; their co-transport in porous media in presence of colloids has not been clearly understood. In this work, a series of column experiments were conducted to study Pb(II) and Cd(II) co-transport in saturated porous media under various experimental conditions with different combination of colloidal solution (montmorillonite colloid, manual loessial soil colloid and humic acid), flow rate (0.1, 0.5 and 1.0 ml min−1) and sand grain size (0.4–0.8mm and 0.8–2.0mm). The results showed that increase of flow rate and grain size promoted the mobility of Pb(II) and Cd(II), furthermore, the presences of mobile colloids also enhanced the mobility of the two heavy metals, meanwhile, Cd(II) showed higher mobility than Pb(II) in the columns. Findings from this work enhanced current understanding of the competitive transport and colloid-facilitated transport of heavy metals in saturated porous media.

The permanganate (Mn(VII)) oxidation has emerged as a promising technology for the remediation and treatment of the groundwater and surface water contaminated with the organic compounds. Nonetheless, only a few studies have been conducted to explore the role of the heavy metals (especially the redox-active ones) during the Mn(VII) oxidation process. In this study, taking Pb(II) as an example, its influence on the Mn(VII) decontamination performance has been extensively investigated. It was found that, with the presence of Pb(II), Mn(VII) could degrade diclofenac (DCF), 2,4-dichlorophenol, and aniline more effectively than without. For instance, over a wide pH range of 4.5–8.0, the dosing of 10 µmol/L Pb(II) accelerated the DCF removal rate from 0.006–0.25 min −1 to 0.05–0.46 min −1 with a promotion factor of 1.9–9.4. Although the UV-vis spectroscopic and high resolution transmission electron microscopy analyses suggested that Mn(VII) could react with Pb(II) to produce Mn(IV) and Pb(IV) at pH 6.0–8.0, further experiments revealed that Pb(II) did not exert its enhancing effect through promoting the generation of MnO 2 , as the reactivity of MnO 2 was poor under the employed pH range. At pH below 5.0, it was interesting to find that, a negligible amount of MnO 2 was formed in the Mn(VII)/Pb(II) system in the absence of contaminants, while once MnO 2 was generated in the presence of contaminants, it could catalyze the Pb(II) oxidation to Pb(IV) by Mn(VII). Collectively, by highlighting the conversion process of Pb(II) to Pb(IV) by either Mn(VII) or MnO 2 , the reactive Pb(III) intermediates were proposed to account for the Pb(II) enhancement effect.

The ability to remove toxic heavy metals, such as Pb(II), from the environment is an important objective from both human-health and ecological perspectives. Herein, we describe the fabrication of a novel carboxymethylcellulose-coated metal organic material (MOF-5–CMC) adsorbent that removed lead ions from aqueous solutions. The adsorption material was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffractometry, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. We studied the functions of the contact time, pH, the original concentration of the Pb(II) solution, and adsorption temperature on adsorption capacity. MOF-5–CMC beads exhibit good adsorption performance; the maximum adsorption capacity obtained from the Langmuir isotherm-model is 322.58 mg/g, and the adsorption equilibrium was reached in 120 min at a concentration of 300 mg/L. The adsorption kinetics is well described by pseudo-second-order kinetics, and the adsorption equilibrium data are well fitted to the Langmuir isotherm model (R2= 0.988). Thermodynamics experiments indicate that the adsorption process is both spontaneous and endothermic. In addition, the adsorbent is reusable. We conclude that MOF-5–CMC is a good adsorbent that can be used to remove Pb(II) from aqueous solutions.Keywords:carboxymethylcellulose;adsorption;Pb(II);MOF-5

The authors report on a one-pot approach for synthesizing highly fluorescent protamine-stabilized gold nanoclusters. These are shown to be a viable nanoprobe for selective and sensitive fluorometric determination of lead(II) via quenching of fluorescence via Pb(II)-Au(I) interaction. Under optimized conditions, fluorescence measured at excitation/emission peaks of 300/599 nm drops in the 80 nM–15 μM lead(II) concentration range. The detection limit is 24 nM, and relative standard deviations (for n = 11) at concentrations of 0.10, 4.0 and 15 μM are 1.6, 2.5 and 1.9%, respectively. The relative recoveries of added lead(II) in the water samples ranged from 97.9 ± 2.29% to 101.2 ± 1.83%.
Lead(II) ions are found to be able to selectively and sensitively quench the fluorescence of the protamine-gold nanoclusters (PRT-AuNCs). Thereby, an inexpensive, selective and sensitive lead(II) assay was established.

Heavy metal pollution and organic wastewater treatment have attracted extensive attention of researchers. Adsorption method is widely used in wastewater treatment because of its low price and high efficiency. As a natural, cheap biomass material, bamboo powder is of great significance to develop it into an economical and efficient biochar for wastewater treatment. A new type of ball-milled biochar (BMBC) adsorbent was prepared by pyrolysis of bamboo powder under an inert atmosphere, activated with sodium hydroxide solution and ball milling. The specific surface area of BMBC increased from 29.21 to 60.49 m 2 /g, and the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups on the pyrolyzed carbon surface also obviously increased after ball milling. The results of bath adsorption experiments showed that BMBC exhibited excellent adsorption capacity towards both Pb(II) (170.52 mg/g) and methylene blue (MB, 419.11 mg/g) at 308 K. Based on a systematic study on the effect of various working conditions (including concentration, temperature, pH value, and ionic strength), it was demonstrated that pseudo-second-order kinetic equation might match the adsorption process ( R 2 > 0.9934) and Langmuir model ( R 2 > 0.9924); adsorptions were thermodynamically endothermic and occurred spontaneously. The ball milled alkalization-modified bamboo biochar can potentially be applied to remove heavy metal and cationic pollutants from wastewater.

Lead (II) (Pb(II)) is widespread in water and very harmful to creatures, and the efficient removal of it is still challenging. Therefore, we prepared a novel sponge-like polymer-based absorbent (poly(amic acid), PAA sponge) with a highly porous structure using a straightforward polymer self-assembly strategy for the efficient removal of Pb(II). In this study, the effects of the pH, dosage, adsorption time and concentration of Pb(II) on the adsorption behavior of the PAA sponge are investigated, revealing a rapid adsorption process with a removal efficiency up to 89.0% in 2 min. Based on the adsorption thermodynamics, the adsorption capacity increases with the concentration of Pb(II), reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 609.7 mg g−1according to the Langmuir simulation fitting. Furthermore, the PAA sponge can be efficiently recycled and the removal efficiency of Pb(II) is still as high as 93% after five adsorption–desorption cycles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses reveal that the efficient adsorption of Pb(II) by the PAA sponge is mainly due to the strong interaction between nitrogen-containing functional groups and Pb(II), and the coordination of oxygen atoms is also involved. Overall, we propose a polymer self-assembly strategy to easily prepare a PAA sponge for the efficient removal of Pb(II) from water.

The development of efficient adsorbents for heavy metal pollution, especially five toxic heavy metals, has attracted great research interest. Polymer-based adsorbents have aroused research value for their abundant functional groups and high porosity to the ability to capture metal ions. We designed a sulfhydryl-functionalized polymer microcomposite to take up Cr(VI), As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II). The adsorption capacity achieved was 64.2 mg g–1 for Cr(VI), 44.9 mg g–1 for As(III), 35.5 mg g–1 for Cd(II), and 18.2 mg g–1 for Pb(II). Langmuir and Sips isotherm model is dominant for As(III), Cd(II), and Pb(II) adsorption. Pseudo-second-order kinetic models can better describe the adsorption behavior of Cr(VI), implying that chemisorption is accompanied by Cr(VI) adsorption. Cr(VI) simultaneous reduction to Cr(III) through the benzenoid amine oxidate pathway was the dominant mechanism, precipitation for Cd(II) adsorption was convinced, and chelation between As(III)/Pb(II) and─SH group and complexation between Pb(II) and C═O or benzene hydroxyl were a plausible mechanism for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption.

Adsorption is recognized as a cost-effective, efficient, and versatile method for the treatment of heavy metal pollution, offering environmentally friendly solutions. The development of highly efficient and selective adsorbent materials is essential, with functional groups such as sulfhydryl and amine groups playing a crucial role in the effectiveness and selectivity of adsorption processes. Polymer-based materials have emerged as a promising class of selective adsorbents due to their naturally occurring amine groups. In this study, a bifunctional adsorbent with a concave morphology was developed by grafting sulfhydryl groups to selectively adsorb As(III) and Pb(II) from aqueous solutions. Maximum adsorption capacities for As(III) and Pb(II) were found to be 165.51 mg g −1 and 62.38 mg g −1 , respectively, at an optimum dosage of 0.05 mg mL −1 and an original concentration of 20 mg L −1 for both metals. Notably, the concave spheres exhibited superior morphology advantages for As(III) and Pb(II) adsorption compared to hollow and solid polymers, with adsorption capacities 1.8 times higher than hollow polymers and 3.7 times higher than solid spheres for As(III) adsorption, and 3.4 times higher than solid spheres for Pb(II) adsorption. Mechanistic studies revealed that the selective capture of As(III) was primarily attributed to the proposed reaction routes between As(III) and -SH groups. Isothermal models, including Langmuir and Freundlich, suggested that monolayer adsorption on homogeneous surfaces may dominate for As(III), while multilayer adsorption is favored for Pb(II) extraction.

In this study, the impact of surfactants on the adsorption behavior of Pb(II) onto microplastics-sediment (MPs-S) complexes was investigated. Firstly, virgin polyamide (VPA) and polyethylene (VPE) were placed in Xiangjiang River sediment for six months to conduct in-situ aging. The results indicated that the biofilm-developed polyamide (BPA) and polyethylene (BPE) formed new oxygen-containing functional groups and different biofilm species. Furthermore, the adsorption capacity of Pb(II) in sediment (S) and MPs-S complexes was in the following order: S > BPA-S > VPE-S > VPA-S > BPE-S. The addition of sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) promoted the adsorption of Pb(II), and the adsorption amount of Pb(II) increased with the higher concentration of SDBS, while adding cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) showed the opposite result. The adsorption process of MPs-S complexes to Pb(II) was dominated by chemical adsorption, and the interaction between MPs-S complexes and Pb(II) was multilayer adsorption involving physical and chemical adsorption when the surfactants were added. Besides, the pH exerts a significant effect on Pb(II) adsorption in different MPs-S complexes, and the highest adsorption amount occurred at pH 6. Noteworthy, CTAB promoted the adsorption ability of Pb(II) when the exogenous FA was added. The binding characteristic of sediment endogenous DOM components and Pb(II) was influenced by the addition of MPs and surfactants. Finally, it confirmed that adsorption mechanisms mainly involve electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction. This study provides a new perspective to explore the environmental behaviors of Pb(II) by MPs and sediments with the addition of surfactants, which was conducive to evaluating the ecological risks of MPs and heavy metals in aquatic environments.
