The potential risk of lead (Pb) leakage from lead halide perovskite materials poses a significant challenge in the commercialization of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To address this issue, a viable strategy involves endowing the materials in PSCs with the ability to immobilize Pb. Herein, we introduce a straightforward technique for carbon-based PSCs that utilizes phosphate as a multifunctional additive, which exhibits both bonding and chemical adsorption effects. A playdough-like carbon material can be made by mixing a phosphate aqueous solution with graphite powder, and then be pressed into shape to serve as the top electrode of PSCs. In addition to good compatibility with small-area PSCs and modules, this versatile carbon electrode effectively mitigates the Pb leakage from damaged devices to a safe level.

The defects at a buried SnO2/perovskite interface can influence device performances by inducing bad interface contact, imperfect perovskite crystallinity, and serious nonradiative recombination loss. Herein, a thiourea resin polymer is deposited at a buried interface. As a multifunctional modifier, thiourea resin can enhance the interface connection and regulate the crystallinity of the perovskite by possible chemical interactions and increased nucleation sites. Thiourea resin can reduce the nonradiative recombination loss related to defects by filling the oxygen vacancy defects of SnO2 and passivating the undercoordinated lead defects in the buried perovskite. Significantly, the devices with thiourea resin modification yield a power conversion efficiency of 21.10%, 13.75% higher than that of the device without modification (18.55%). Besides, thiourea resin improves humidity stability by protecting the perovskite from the erosion of moisture due to its water resistance. After aging in air with a relative humidity of 20–30% for 720 h, the unencapsulated device with thiourea resin modification retains 90% of its initial performance. The thiourea resin can suppress lead leakage through the strong interaction between thiourea resin and Pb. This work provides a valid modification strategy for the buried interface.

The defects at buried SnO 2 /perovskite interface can influence the performances of perovskite solar cells by causing the poor perovskite crystallinity , bad interface connection, undesired interfacial recombination and electron transfer efficiency. Now, multifunctional amidine thiourea is used to modify the buried SnO 2 /perovskite interface. The amidine thiourea can passivate the interface defects by the electron donation roles of N and S atoms, improve the electron transfer efficiency by enhancing the interface connection and regulating the interface energy level matching, reduce lead leakage and reinforce the structural stability of device by the coordination and hydrogen bond interaction. The perovskite solar cells with the amidine thiourea modification exhibit an enhanced power conversion efficiency (20.48%) and stability, outperforming than that of control device (18.65%). Modifying the buried interface with small organic molecule is a feasible and efficient method to improve the performances of PSCs.

Effective interfacial modification of the perovskite layer is a feasible approach to improve the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we introduce a dual interfacial modification approach utilizing a natural organic acid, citric acid (CA), to enhance both interfaces adjacent to the crucial perovskite layer within the PSC structure. First, a CA thin layer is deposited on the top of a SnO2 electron transport layer to mitigate the corrosive effects of alkaline impurities in SnO2 on the perovskite film and to control the crystal growth of the perovskite. Then, the perovskite film is post-treated with CA to adjust the surface condition and passivate the defects on the film surface; thus, the interface contact around perovskite is strengthened, thereby facilitating charge transfer at the interfaces. Besides, CA also provides an in situ suppression of lead leakage in case the perovskite film is destroyed, owing to the strong chelating interactions of carboxyl groups with Pb2+. The photovoltaic performance and stability of the final PSCs are significantly enhanced, with the power conversion efficiency (PCE) increasing from 21.02 to 24.20%. This optimization of the important interfaces adjacent to the perovskite layer through surface treatment with a natural organic acid offers a practical method for enhancing the performance and stability of environmentally friendly PSCs.

The photoelectric conversion efficiency of lead-based halide perovskite photovoltaic cells (PSC) has reached 25% in recent years, which is the commercial level. A safe and environment-friendly encapsulation material and process for PSC determines its application in building-integrated photovoltaics. In this work, an acrylate hot melt adhesive (AHMA) with good transparency and extensive cohesiveness was obtained by free-radical copolymerization, based on which, the safety sandwich perovskite photovoltaic cell was prepared together with PVB film at 80 °C. It avoids the structural damage of perovskite devices under high-temperature or UV curing. Before and after packaging, 21.58% and 20.88% of the PCE were achieved, respectively, for the perovskite photovoltaic device, which shows good stability. It has been confirmed that more than 96% of lead leakage can still be blocked from the seriously damaged device after heavy rainfall for 6 hours. The encapsulation scheme introduced here is especially suitable for perovskite photovoltaic building integration.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are multilayer structures. The interface between electron transport layer and perovskite is the mechanical weakest point in flexible PSCs due to its low fracture energy. Herein, we develop a highly adhesive polyamide-amine-based hyperbranched polymers to reinforce the interface. The interface fracture energy is improved from 1.08 to 2.13 J·m −2 by the hyperbranched polymers with adhesive groups and dynamic hydrogen bond networks. The polymer functionalized perovskite solar cells achieve superior power conversion efficiencies of 25.05% and 23.86% for rigid and flexible devices, respectively. Furthermore, the hyperbranched polymer contains abundant intramolecular cavities that can capture Pb 2+ . Pb leakage after solar cell damage is effectively suppressed. Our findings provide insights on designing adhesive interface layers towards high-efficiency, mechanical-stable and environment-friendly flexible perovskite solar cells.

Encapsulation engineering is an effective strategy to improve the stability of perovskite solar cells. However, current encapsulation materials are not suitable for lead-based devices because of their complex encapsulation processes, poor thermal management, and inefficient lead leakage suppression. In this work, we design a self-crosslinked fluorosilicone polymer gel, achieving nondestructive encapsulation at room temperature. Moreover, the proposed encapsulation strategy effectively promotes heat transfer and mitigates the potential impact of heat accumulation. As a result, the encapsulated devices maintain 98% of the normalized power conversion efficiency after 1000 h in the damp heat test and retain 95% of the normalized efficiency after 220 cycles in the thermal cycling test, satisfying the requirements of the International Electrotechnical Commission 61215 standard. The encapsulated devices also exhibit excellent lead leakage inhibition rates, 99% in the rain test and 98% in the immersion test, owing to excellent glass protection and strong coordination interaction. Our strategy provides a universal and integrated solution for achieving efficient, stable, and sustainable perovskite photovoltaics.

Though great achievements have been realized in perovskite solar cells (PSCs), there are still some thorny challenges that exist such as: 1) How to minimize the interfacial nonradiative recombination losses; 2) How to balance the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and environmental friendliness of the PSCs. Here, effective top-contacts-interface engineering is developed via using a new multi-active site Lewis base molecule named emtricitabine (FTC). Both, experimental and theoretical results confirm that a strong chemical interaction exists between FTC and Pb 2+ . After FTC treatment, the perovskite thin film has the lower density of defect than the control film, meanwhile, the interfacial hole extraction becomes better due to the more matched energy level. Upon the FTC passivation, the PCE of the PSCs is improved from 20.83% to 22.24%. Simultaneously, the humidity stability of the PSCs is improved after the FTC modification. Last but not least, the unpackaged target film showed less lead leakage than the control film.

Despite the remarkable progress made in perovskite solar cells, great concerns regarding potential Pb contamination risk and environmental vulnerability risks associated with perovskite solar cells pose a significant obstacle to their real-world commercialization. In this study, we took inspiration from the ensnaring prey behavior of spiders and chemical components in spider web to strategically implant a multifunctional mesoporous amino-grafted-carbon net into perovskite solar cells, creating a biomimetic cage traps that could effectively mitigate Pb leakage and shield the external invasion under extreme weather conditions. The synergistic Pb capturing mechanism in terms of chemical chelation and physical adsorption is in-depth explored. Additionally, the Pb contamination assessment of end-of-life perovskite solar cells in the real-world ecosystem, including Yellow River water and soil, is proposed. The sustainable closed-loop Pb management process is also successfully established involving four critical steps: Pb precipitation, Pb adsorption, Pb desorption, and Pb recycling. Our findings provide inspiring insights for promoting green and sustainable industrialization of perovskite solar cells.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved huge success in power conversion efficiency (PCE) and stability. However, further improving the PCE of PSCs and stability is still a big challenge. Here, we attempt to improve the PCE and stability of PSCs using a functional additive named 3-mercaptopropyltriethoxysilane (SiSH) in the perovskite antisolvent. It is revealed that SiSH can release the stress in the film, reduce the defects, and inhibit lithium-ion migration and lead leakage. As a result, the target device achieves an efficiency enhancement from 20.80 to 22.42% as compared to the control device. Meanwhile, device stability is ameliorated after SiSH modification. Furthermore, new adsorbents are used to treat the leaked lead to make it comply with safe drinking water standards. This work provides an idea for developing multifunctional antisolvent additives and adsorbents for high PCE, long stability, and environment-friendly Pb-based PSCs.

Although perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have achieved significant success, there are still some barriers to their commercialization , such as poor stability and unsatisfactory power conversion efficiency (PCE). Here, we report low-dimensionality engineering of perovskites using mercaptoethylammonium iodide (MEMI). Two-dimensional (2D) perovskite materials can simultaneously passivate the interface defects of the perovskite film and enhance carrier extraction. The PCE of the device increased from 20.85% for the control device to a resultant of 22.41% for the target device. Meanwhile, device stability was ameliorated after MEMI modification, and the stability of unencapsulated target devices decreased by 7.5% after aging in the dark air condition for 300 h. Finally, the notorious lead leakage was significantly suppressed. This work guides to create efficient and stable environmentally friendly PSCs through low-dimensional engineering.

Environment-related degradation and lead leakage in perovskite solar cells have posed a big challenge for their commercialization. Here, design of superhydrophobic surfaces is demonstrated as an effective strategy toward these issues, in which thiol-functionalized perfluoroalkyl molecules are employed to chemically modify the lead halide perovskite film and metal electrode via a vapor-assisted self-assembly process. Due to the van der Waals forces, the generation of self-assembly monolayer prefers to pack in a dense way, resulting in the formation of a closest-packed, crystalline-like molecular array. This dense array is endowed with a low-surface-energy chemistry that can not only enhance the water and oxygen resistance of the completed device but also reduce the defect density on the perovskite surfaces. These merits eventually boost the efficiency of inverted perovskite solar cells up to 21.79% along with a substantially improved long-term stability. More importantly, the thiol-functionalized superhydrophobic array can immobilize most of the undercoordinated lead ions on the perovskite surfaces by metal-thiol coordination effect, which results in suppressing the lead leakage from the water-soluble lead halide perovskites. Therefore, an avenue is pointed out here to fabricate stable perovskite solar cells with reducing lead leakage, representing a substantial step toward practical applications.
