Sisal is a perennial tropical biomass with largest dosage in industry. Due to the special hard structure of sisal fiber , it can be prepared as carbon material and applied for negative material of lead-carbon battery . The pretreatment of sisal fiber was carried out by 5% NaOH and 5% H 3 PO 4 and tested by the measurement of FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis and SEM. Carbazole was doped in pretreated sisal fiber to prepare carbon material by a simple approach with two-step method. The characterization of the synthesis doped-N carbon material was tested by Raman, BET, XRD and EDS. According to the result of BET, it was turned out that the doped-N carbon material had a larger specific surface area. And the electrochemical properties were measured by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Besides, the cycling life test and charge/discharge curve were performed on battery testing instrument. In addition, the lead-carbon battery contained doped-N carbon material had a longer discharge plateau and a higher ultimate capacity. It was concluded that doped-N carbon material had a better electrochemical performance compared to undoped-N carbon material.

Effects of different specials carbon materials on the performance of negative plates were studied. The addition of carbon materials P1 and P2 greatly improved the high-rate partial-state-of-charge (HRPSoC) cycle performance of the batteries. A negative plate completed 18489 HRPSoC micro-cycles in the first cycle-set when the concentration of P2 was 0.9%. Special properties are required for the carbon materials to be used as additives to the negative electrode materials. Firstly, the carbon material added to the negative electrode should have a good binding force with lead and lead sulfate. Secondly, the carbon material should have a large specific surface area and a larger pore volume. Addition of bismuth sulfide can inhibit the hydrogen evolution of the lead-carbon negative plates. Negative electrodes modified with a C/Bi 2 S 3 composite exhibited good low temperature performance.

Lead-carbon batteries (LCBs) possess remarkable technical merits over traditional lead-acid batteries, and the development of applicable carbon-based negative additives is considered as an essential mission for the further exponential advancement of LCBs. Herein, hierarchical tubular porous carbon (HTPC) with high specific surface area derived from mulberry branches was synthesized while evaluating the role of activation temperature on the structural evolution. As a result, the increase of activation temperature improves the specific surface area, reduces the graphitization degree of HTPC, whereas intrinsic tubular structure would collapse under high activation temperature. The critical function of HTPC as negative additive in LCBs is exhaustively elaborated, where the LCBs with 1.2 % HTPC deliver a discharge capacity of 165.4 mAh g −1 at 0.1 C compared with 140.5 mAh g −1 of blank sample. Especially, the cyclic life of LCBs under HRPSoC condition is tremendously extended by 3.17 times compared with the control sample. The performance improvement is attributed to the cooperation of HTPC with excellent conductivity, high specific surface, rich functional groups, and abundant tubular array structures, which facilitate the reduction of the internal resistance, increase the conversion rate of active materials, and inhibit the irreversible sulphation on negative lead. The proposed research provides a sustainable and scalable strategy to recycle the agricultural waste into outstanding carbon materials for high-performance LCBs.

Sweet sorghum stalks can be utilized for the preparation of carbon materials, which can then be applied as negative electrode materials in lead–carbon batteries. In this study, sweet sorghum stalks were pretreated with 5 wt.% H 3 PO 4 and subsequently carbonized at 550 °C for 105 min. Subsequently, the electrochemical properties of lead-coated sorghum stalk–based carbon materials, prepared under varying reduction durations, were investigated through EIS and CV tests. On this basis, the negative electrode materials, which consisted of the lead-coated sorghum stalk–based carbon material (under the reduction time of 45 min) and physically ground comparison materials, were assembled into simulated lead–carbon batteries. The charge–discharge performance of these batteries was evaluated using a charge–discharge tester. The initial discharge capacities of the two materials were 73.0 mAh/g and 57.24 mAh/g, respectively. After 150 cycles, the capacity retention ratios were 71.8% and 57.5%, respectively. These results indicate that the simulated lead–carbon battery with the newly prepared carbon material exhibits superior electrochemical performance.

The negative plate additive can significantly enhance the performance of lead-carbon batteries (LCBs). In this study, manganese oxide/reaming apricot shell carbon composite (Mn-RASC) as a negative additive was prepared by employing a simple KOH activation of apricot shells and a hydrothermal strategy to enhance the electrochemical properties of the LCBs. The additive is constructed to alleviate the irreversible sulfation of the negative plate in the high-rate partial state of charge (HRPSoC). And the results illustrate that the initial discharge capacity of the Mn-RASC-modified lead-carbon battery is 153.01 mAh/g, surpassing the 83.37 mAh/g of the blank control group battery. Additionally, the cycle life of the Mn-RASC-modified lead-carbon battery reaches 15,188 cycles, 8.7 times longer than that of the blank control group battery (1744 cycles). Manganese oxide doping onto the electrode surface can achieve more charge transfer under a redox reaction, which is conducive to lowering the internal resistance and improving the conversion rate of the negative active material, thus effectively inhibiting the irreversible sulfation of the negative plate. In addition, the application of Mn-RASC also considers the inhibition of hydrogen evolution, thus comprehensively improving the cycle life of the battery. The successful preparation of Mn-RASC also provides a feasible solution for the design and synthesis of negative additives for LCBs.

The sulfation and serious hydrogen evolution reaction render a substantial obstacle for the further development of lead-carbon batteries (LCBs). Herein, lead tartrate precursors derived from spent lead paste are pyrolyzed to in-situ synthesize a carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles , which are introduced as additives into the negative electrodes of LCBs. The in-situ formed carbon encapsulation Pb/PbO nanoparticles ensure the long-lasting inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction in the negative electrodes. The discharge capacity after the introduction of the composites is improved by 24 % compared with the control at 0.1C, and the cycle life is almost twice as long as the control. The remarkable hydrophilicity of the composites as 3D electro-osmotic pumps facilitates the absorption and transportation of electrolyte to the negative active materials. Additionally, the carbon encapsulated Pb/PbO nanoparticles could provide abundant nucleation sites for Pb/PbSO 4 conversion and reinforce the reversibility of the transformation between the substances. Benefiting the cooperative interaction between the multiple mechanisms in the composites, the sulfation and serious hydrogen evolution on the negative electrode are dramatically inhibited, consequently thus contributing to the admirable promotion of the overall performances of LCBs.

Lead-carbon battery is supposed as the promising candidate for lead-acid battery for energy storage application ascribed to the unique performance under the high-rate-partial-state-of-charge (HRPSoC). Herein, a bamboo-leaf hierarchical porous carbon material (BLHPC) is successfully generated as the lead-carbon batteries negative electrode additive. BLHPC manifests hierarchical and multidirectional porous structure with broad size distribution and large specific surface area (2595 m 2 g −1 ), which is attributed to the abundant hollow structure in bamboo-leaf and etching of biogenetic SiO 2 nanoparticles . In electrochemical characterization, BLHPC presents high specific capacitance (252 F g −1 at 0.5 A g −1 ) and remarkable rate capability (68.6% retention rate at 10 A g −1 ). Furthermore, cycle life of simulated battery with 0.5 wt% BLHPC (56700) is twice that of the same amount of commercial rice-husk carbon (RHC) material additive (23701) and 7.6 times for blank battery (7455). The battery performance enhancement owes to the high surface area and hierarchical porous structure of BLHPC to mitigate the sulfation and promote electrolyte permeation .

Lead-carbon composites are effective additives in lead-carbon negative electrode due to their beneficial influences on the performance of negative electrode of lead-carbon battery operated under high-rate partial-state-of-charge duty. In this paper, to further investigate the effects of the lead monoxide (PbO) deposition ratio of activated carbon (AC) based lead-carbon composite additives, we prepared lead-carbon composites (termed as PbO@AC) with different controllable PbO deposition ratios successfully through a facile coupled chemical-deposition/pyrolysis strategy. The hydrogen evolution reaction of AC and lead-carbon electrode is effectively inhibited through the deposition of PbO. PbO@AC-2 sample with a PbO deposition ratio of 9.9% exhibits the best electrochemical performances when used as the negative electrode additive. The evidently enhanced performances of lead-carbon electrodes, such as rate capability and cycling life under high-rate partial-state-of-charge operation, indicate the beneficial effects of deposited PbO. Particularly, PbO@AC-2 battery exhibits the longest cycling life of more than 10,000 cycles which is 1.956 times that of lead-carbon battery with AC as the negative electrode additive. The improved performances of lead-carbon electrode enabled by PbO@AC-2 originate from both the inhibition of hydrogen evolution reaction and the enhanced electrochemical reversibility of the Pb/PbSO 4 redox reaction . PbO@AC-2 exhibits the best trade-off between inhibiting hydrogen evolution and building extra electrochemical active area for the deposition of Pb.

Sluggish ions and electron transport caused by high polarization result in low utilization efficiency of positive active materials (PAMs) in lead-carbon batteries (LCBs). Hydrophilic polyaniline/graphene oxide (PANI/GO) composites are prepared via a facile oxidation polymerization approach and incorporated as positive additives to regulate electron and ion transfer in positive electrodes of LCBs. The effects of PANI/GO additives on the characteristics of substances transformation, crystal size, and utilization efficiency of PAMs during curing, formation, and cycling stages are systematically examined. The synergistic features of hydrophilicity, conductivity, and pseudo-capacitance in PANI/GO composite provide an efficient conductive network and serve as storage medium for HSO 4 − ions, thereby regulating the local environment and substantially accelerating electron/ion transfer within positive plates. The LCBs with 0.45 wt% PANI/GO deliver the highest initial discharge capacity of 3.55 Ah at 0.1 C, which is 63.5 % improvement over the blank sample. The discharge capacity of 2.15 Ah could be maintained at 1 C rate and the capacity retention remains as high as 98.8 % after 100 cycles, highlighting the outstanding rate capability and cycling stability. This study provides an alternative for the development of high-efficiency positive additives for LCBs in energy storage applications.

As a more reliable form of energy storage than lead-acid battery, lead–carbon battery plays a key role in the field of electric vehicles and energy storage systems, but it still faces some problems in the application process. To prolong the cycle life of lead–carbon batteries under high rate partial state of charge (HRPSoC) duty and focus on solving the problem of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) of batteries, a facile strategy using phosphoric acid as activator for preparing P-doped biomass-derived mesoporous carbon was proposed. Compared with commercial activated carbon (AC) and carbon material obtained under other preparation conditions, the P-RHMC-2 using material ratio with 1:2 as well as activated at 550 ℃ has the highest mesoporous rate and excellent P-doping effect. In the electrochemical test, P-RHMC-2 inhibits HER dramatically and improves the cycle life of lead–carbon battery significantly under HRPSoC duty when it applied to the negative electrode of the batteries.

This study innovatively employs a two-step process of ball-milling degradation and carbonization to convert waste PET plastics into porous carbon material (PET-C) rich in oxygen-containing functional groups, which functions as a high-performance additive for lead-acid battery anodes while achieving the high-value utilization of waste plastics. Leveraging a unique process design, the prepared PET-C combines a hierarchical pore structure with abundant surface carbonyl/carboxyl functional groups. This synergistic "pore-functional group" effect dramatically improves charge transfer efficiency and effectively inhibits irreversible PbSO 4 deposition. Remarkably, even trace amounts of PET-C substantially improve battery performance—the cycle life of a battery with 1 % PET-C reaches an impressive 21,062 cycles, representing an 11.35-fold increase compared to the control battery (1855 cycles), while a low carbon concentration of 0.3 % PET-C still maintains 7357 cycles. This study pioneers the integration of ball-milling plastic degradation with energy material preparation, thereby presenting a dual-pronged solution to "white pollution" management and lead-carbon battery (LCB) performance enhancement. The research not only elucidates the critical impact of carbon material surface chemistry on battery performance but also demonstrates the successful application of circular economy principles in the field of energy materials.
