This study investigated the process and mechanism of synergistically assisted hydrogen production from tailings and coal slurry. We have identified the optimal tailings as lead-zinc tailings through experimentation with different tailings mixed with pulverized coal . Furthermore, we have analyzed the electrochemical properties of Fe 2+ and Fe 3+ at different concentration gradients in a hydrochloric acid environment and our results have confirmed that the presence of Fe 3+ in the simplified environment does not affect the electrochemical processes . to determine the respective roles and effects of the extract and residue of the lead-zinc tailings slurry with equal amounts of coal dust added to them, which has confirmed that it is the lead-zinc tailings extract that has the primary influence. In addition, the electrocatalysis of Fe 3+ in the presence of both lead-zinc tailings and coal results in a small increase in current density, and the improvement in current density due to direct and indirect oxidation of coal particles is also extremely limited. Based on our analysis, we have concluded that the increase in current density brought about by the synergistic hydrogen production from lead-zinc tailings-supported coal is mainly due to the different oxidation processes of Fe 2+ .

The mining and processing of lead-zinc ores produce many lead-zinc ore tailings, which can cause harm by releasing toxic metal ions to the environment. Therefore, the leaching characteristics, acid generation capacity, and fractions of released heavy metals from two Pb-Zn tailings, one from Guangxi designated as F and another from Inner Mongolia designated as YD, have been investigated in this work. Here, sodium diethyl dithiocarbamate functionalized montmorillonite (DDTC-Mt) was synthesized to remediate both F and YD tailings. It was found that YD tailings have a stronger acid generation potential than F tailings, and both of them could be further oxidized and release acid. Moreover, YD showed a certain buffering capacity to acid rain due to its higher calcite content, while the leaching amounts of heavy metals from F was larger than YD resulting from the former’s higher weathering degree. DDTC-Mt resulted in a superior stabilization performance to Zn, Mn and Pb from both tailings with optimal stabilization ratios, which are all above 94%. The remediating effect of DDTC-Mt on F was better than that of YD, which could be ascribed to the fact that F contained lower amount of carbonate minerals because of a higher degree of weathering in the latter. The leaching amounts and stabilization ratios of the four elements increased with increasing time and dose of DDTC-Mt, however, temperature and pH showed little or no effect. Mineralogical analysis showed minerals in F and YD before and after leaching were mainly quartz, while the contents of sphalerite and pyrite in F-DDTC-Mt and YD-DDTC-Mt decreased although they were more than those in F and YD without DDTC-Mt after leaching for 72 h. DDTC-Mt could inhibit the release of heavy metals to a certain extent by covering the surface of tailings via complexation and precipitation. Furthermore, DDTC-Mt coating can prevent the oxidation of tailings.

Wastewater containing Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ poses a huge threat to the surrounding environment and human safety. To treat such wastewater, this study developed a novel composite adsorbent (LZT 850 @SA) from thermally activated LZT and sodium alginate (SA). LZT was thermally activated at 850°C (LZT 850 ). The composite LZT 850 @SA was synthesized by mixing LZT 850 powder with SA solution under optimized conditions (20°C, 4 g/L SA, 90 min). Adsorption performance for Cu 2+ /Cd 2+ was evaluated under varying pH, contact time, temperature, and concentration. Kinetics, isotherms, selectivity, and regeneration were systematically studied. Activation at 850°C enhanced LZT crystallinity and created pores (SSA: 5.46 m 2 /g). SA compositing formed unique fibrous architectures and amorphous-crystalline interfaces, significantly increasing SSA to 16.31 m 2 /g (BET). XRD confirmed the dominant phases (CaCO 3 , CaO, MgO) in LZT 850 and phase transition upon SA compositing. SEM/HRTEM revealed SA's transformation of the granular LZT 850 surface into a highly porous, roughened morphology with uniform particle distribution. At pH 6, LZT 850 @SA exhibited exceptional adsorption capacities of 223.47 mg/g (Cu 2+ ) and 227.99 mg/g (Cd 2+ ), reaching equilibrium within 120 min. Adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating chemisorption-dominated monolayer adsorption. Mechanisms involved chemical coordination (C=O, O-C=O, O-H, iron oxides), ion exchange, coordination and electrostatic interactions. The composite demonstrated excellent selectivity and retained 81.9% (Cu 2+ ) and 85.52% (Cd 2+ ) adsorption capacity after 5 regeneration cycles. This provides a new strategy for the composite of solid waste and biopolymers, and at the same time offers technical insights for the treatment of heavy metal-polluted wastewater.

In the electrocatalytic (EC) degradation process, low current efficiency, mineralization efficiency, and mass transfer efficiency have limited its widespread application. To overcome these limitations, spherical particle electrodes (LZT–SO) with high electrocatalytic activity were simply prepared by using lead–zinc tailings (LZT) as catalytically active substances and soil (SO) from riverbeds as the carrier. The LZT–SO electrode was introduced into an electrocatalytic (EC) reaction tank to establish a three-dimensional catalytic oxidation system (EC/LZT–SO). Compared with the EC (0.0118 min−1) and EC/SO (0.0271 min−1) systems, the EC/LZT–SO system exhibited a higher sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) degradation rate (0.0597 min−1). EPR analysis and free radical capture experiments confirmed that ·OH played a major role in the degradation process. SEM + EDS analysis confirmed that Fe and Mn metal oxides were the main active sites of the LZT–SO electrode. Under complex water conditions, the degradation efficiency of SMZ reached 94–100% within 70 min. Even after three cycles, the EC/LZT–SO system still maintained a high removal efficiency of 93.75% for SMZ, with only a slight decrease of 6.25%. Triple quadrupole liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and Toxicity Estimation Software Tool (TEST) software were used to study the products after SMZ degradation and it was found that the products were almost harmless. This work will provide a new perspective for the “treat waste with waste and turn waste into treasure” approach, which can accelerate the development of recycling waste tailings.
