Water containing excess heavy metals poses a health risk to humans but can be purified effectively using adsorbents. As such, identifying novel and efficient adsorbents to remove heavy metals such as Pb(II) and Cr(VI) is vital. We report a new metal-organic framework (MOF), {[Cd 1.5 (btc)(bibp)·2H 2 O]·H 2 O}n, capable of capturing Pb(II) and Cr(VI) from water. The adsorbent has a high density of exposed active sites, with maximum adsorption capacities of 537.634 mg/g for Pb(II) (pH = 7) and 787.402 mg/g for Cr(VI) (pH = 6). Adsorption equilibrium was reached after 60 and 120 min with Pb(II) and Cr(VI), respectively, and the adsorbent was regenerated effectively using an ethanol-acetic acid eluent. Analysis of the adsorption kinetics using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the abundant –OH groups (hard base) and the Pb(II)/Cr(VI) (soft acid) behave according to the hard-soft acid-base principle. In addition, electron pairs are shared between the imidazole N atoms and Pb(II)/Cr(VI). This study provides new insights into the design of three-dimensional MOFs for removing pollutants from industrial wastewaters, with the potential to mitigate health risks to humans and natural ecosystems.

As a ubiquitous toxic heavy metal, lead (Pb) exposure is known to be implicated in the onset and development of neurodegenerative diseases which may cause more serious health hazards with age and the accumulation of Pb in the body. Autophagy is the main degradation route for abnormal aggregated proteins and damaged cell organelles. Here, we aimed to study the effects of adolescent Pb exposure on autophagy at different life nodes. In this study, we developed a time-series model of Pb exposure in mice and randomly divided 4-week-old male C57BL/6 mice into six groups (4 C, 13 C, 16 C, 4Pb, 13Pb and 16Pb). Mice in Pb groups was consumed deionized water containing 0.2 % Pb(Ac) 2 for 3 months and then reared to anticipated life nodes, while the control group consumed deionized water. Western blot and Real-time qPCR were used to assess the effects of developmental Pb exposure on individual components of the autophagy machinery and modulation of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3) at each age stage. Our results showed that Pb exposure during adolescence reduced the p-mTOR/mTOR ratios with enhanced expression of Beclin-1, Atg12 and Atg7in both the hippocampus (HPC) and prefrontal cortex (PFC) of senescent mice while upregulation of LC3II/LC3I ratios and p62 suggested that autophagy mediates degradation was interrupted. Overall, we confirm that Pb exposure during adolescence promotes autophagic processes in the aged mice brain and that autophagic degradation is hindered, ultimately leading to a failure of autophagic degradation.

This study investigates the migration of lead (Pb) during soil electrokinetic remediation (EKR) with sodium alginate (SA), providing important data on ion orientation and Pb removal efficiency. A 1 mV/cm voltage was applied to kaolinite contaminated with Pb²⁺, and SA was applied to regulate Pb migration. Pb was detected in both the anolyte and catholyte, with varying molar Pb/C ratios. In the anode and cathode chambers, the molar ratios reached 1:7.79 and 1:2.64, respectively. The addition of Pb 2+ disrupted the stable structure of SA, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations combined with X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS) analysis showed that Pb²⁺ forms dual-ridentate (positively charged) and quad-/hexaridentate (negatively charged) complexes with SA, thereby influencing Pb migration toward the corresponding electrodes. Additionally, Pb in the soil transformed into immobile particulate states, such as PbO 2 , Pb 3 O 4 , and PbO. The formation of these particulate phases and conversion of mobile Pb phases to the anode reduced the Pb migration ability at the cathode. These findings offer fresh perspectives on EKR’s application for heavy metal soil remediation, particularly six-period metals on the periodic table, improving our understanding of Pb behavior during electrokinetic treatments.

Lead (Pb) is a widespread neurotoxic pollutant. Pb exposure is associated with mood disorders, with no well-established neural mechanisms elucidated. In the present study, we aimed to investigate whether excitatory neurons in the dentate gyrus subregion of the ventral hippocampus (vDG) played a key role in Pb-induced anxiety and depression-like behaviors. C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 100 ppm Pb starting on day 1 of pregnancy until experiments were performed using the offspring. Behavioral studies suggested that chronic Pb exposure triggered anxiety and depression-like behaviors. A combination of electrophysiological, optogenetic, and immunohistochemistry experiments was conducted. Results showed that Pb exposure resulted in excitatory neuronal hyperexcitability in vDG and that the behavioral deficits caused by Pb exposure could be rescued by inhibition of excitatory neuronal activity. Moreover, it was found that the action potential (AP) threshold of excitatory neurons was decreased by electrophysiological recordings. Our study demonstrates a significant role for excitatory neurons in vDG in Pb-induced anxiety and depression-like behaviors in mice, which is likely a result of decreased AP threshold. These outcomes can serve as an important basis for understanding mechanisms of anxiety and depression under environmental Pb exposure and help in the design of therapeutic strategies.

The high chlorine (Cl) and lead (Pb) content characteristics of municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA) pose environmental risks and hinder resource utilization. Herein, an MSWIFA-based magnesium potassium phosphate cement (MKPC) preparation strategy was developed, which allowed the MSWIFA recycling and the Pb-Cl synergistic immobilization without the washing pretreatment . The compressive strength of the resulting 10 wt% MSWIFA-based MKPC was 28.44 MPa, with over 99.2% reduction in leaching toxicity of Pb and Cl. The high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscope (HAADF-STEM) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyzes showed that Pb, phosphate and Cl - formed Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl in MKPC. In-situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests showed that Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 was gradually transformed to Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl through a dissolution-precipitation process. The formation energy, Bader charge, charge density difference and density of states (DOS) of Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl were analyzed by first-principles calculations, confirming that Pb 5 (PO 4 ) 3 Cl was more thermodynamically stable than Pb 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and PbCl 2 and that electronic interactions between Pb-p, O-p, P-p and Cl-p orbits were the origin of Pb-Cl synergistic immobilization. This work provides a new strategy for the resource utilization of MSWIFA without washing pretreatment, and provides an in-depth understanding of the Pb-Cl synergistic immobilization mechanism.

Three Fe3O4magnetic solvent-free nanofluids with different amine-based coronal layer structures are synthesized and characterized by using magnetic Fe3O4as the core, silane coupling agent as the corona, and polyether amines with different graft densities and chain lengths as the canopy. The concentration of heavy metal ions after adsorption is measured by atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) to study the effect of Fe3O4magnetic solvent-free nanofluids on the adsorption performance of the heavy metal ions lead (Pb(II)) and copper (Cu(II)) in water. The adsorption of Fe3O4magnetic solvent-free nanofluid was explored by changing external condition factors such as adsorption contact time and pH. Additionally, the adsorption model is established. The magnetic solvent-free nanofluid is separated from water by applying an external magnetic field to the system, and desorption and cyclic adsorption tests are carried out. Based on the adsorption mechanism, the structure design of Fe3O4magnetic solvent-free nanofluid was optimized to achieve optimal adsorption performance.
