Synthesis of Au nanoparticles with Bi adlayers using glucose as dispersant

Tian Yanping,Ouyang Lei,Xiao Mingshu,Zhou Hualan

Well-dispersed Au/Bi nanoparticles with average size below 10 nm were prepared by using NaBH 4 to reduce HAuCl 4 with glucose as dispersant. The obtained Au/Bi NPs were well characterized by UV-Vis spectra, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. The electrochemical study found that Bi adlayers on the surface of Au nanoparticles owns two kinds of surface structures, including a low coverage (2 × 2)-Bi adlayer and a close-packed (p × √3)-2 Bi adlayer due to the strong interaction between the two Bi layers and the below Au atoms, which is same with that bulk on Au surface.

Interstitial Atomic Bi Charge-Alternating Processor Boosts Twofold Molecular Oxygen Activation Enabling Rapid Catalytic Oxidation Reactions at Room Temperature

Qiyu Lian,Lingling Hu,Dingren Ma,Yimu Jiao,Dehua Xia,Yajing Huang,Zhuoyun Tang,Wei Qu,Huinan Zhao,Chun He,Daniel D. Gang

Molecular O 2 activation on metallic oxide-based catalysts surfaces is pivotal for catalytic oxidation reactions but highly depends on the O 2 activation pathways or mechanisms. Thus, comprehensively understanding the mechanism of efficient O 2 activation is conducive to extending the fundamental principles for O 2 activation theories and designing novel catalysts for catalytic oxidation reactions. In this study, it is declared that the interstitial atomic Bi (IA Bi) anchored in the lattice interstice of MnO 2 (Bi/MnO 2 ) is capable of triggering an alternative twofold O 2 activation boosting the catalytic oxidation reactions at room temperature. Explicitly, the IA Bi facilely induces the local lattice distortion reconstructing the local charge landscape, thus weakening the O 2 dissociation energy barrier by elongating the O  O bond length. And, the charge-alternating process engineered by the IA Bi drives the alternative twofold O 2 activation of the adjacent lattice oxygen and adsorbs dangling oxygen assisted by the consecutive O 2 replenishment. Conclusively, this study not only declares the role of IA Bi in driving the charge-alternating process during the twofold O 2 activation but also extends the fundamental principles toward O 2 activation mechanisms for catalytic oxidation reactions via atomic makeup engineering.

Assembling of Bi atoms on TiO2 nanorods boosts photoelectrochemical water splitting of semiconductors

Yajun Pang,Wenjie Zang,Zongkui Kou,Lei Zhang,Guangqing Xu,Jun Lv,Xiaorui Gao,Zhenghui Pan,John Wang,Yucheng Wu

Low photoconversion efficiency, high charge transfer resistance and fast recombination rate are the bottlenecks of semiconductor nanomaterials in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting, where the introduction of an appropriate co-catalyst is an effective strategy to improve their performance. In the present study, we have purposely designed atomic-scale dispersed bismuth (Bi) assembled on titanium dioxide nanorods (TiO2), and demonstrated its effective role as a co-catalyst in enhancing the PEC water splitting performance of TiO2. As a result, functionalized Bi/TiO2 generates a high photocurrent intensity at 1.23 VRHE under simulated solar light irradiation, which is 4-fold higher than that of pristine TiO2, exhibiting a significantly improved PEC performance for water splitting. The strategy presented in this study opens a new window for the construction of non-precious metals dispersed at atomic scales as efficient co-catalysts for realizing sustainable solar energy-driven energy conversion and storage.

Atomic Bi active sites decorated graphite felt derived from bismuth-based metal−organic framework boosting vanadium redox flow battery performance

Liu Yang,Zihao Fan,Fujun Cui,Taolong Wu,Tingxu Fang,Yujie Guo,Li Tian,Bo Pang,Gaohong He,Xuemei Wu

Vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB) is promising large-scale energy storage technology for renewable energies, while the sluggish kinetics of vanadium redox reaction restricts the efficiency at high current density. Herein, the strategy of boosting V 2+ /V 3+ redox reaction by atomic Bi active sites decorated graphite felt electrode derived from bismuth-based metal−organic framework (Bi-MOF) is proposed. Bi-MOF, dispersing abundant Bi metal sites on porous carrier, helps the Bi atoms to form atomic active sites easily by coordinating with N through the nitrogen source mediated carbonization process. Porous nanobundles of atomic Bi catalyst uniformly bind to the graphite felt, exhibiting over 2 folds increase in specific surface area, higher V 2+ /V 3+ redox peak currents and reversibility, and one order of magnitude lower of charge-transfer resistance. The atomic Bi active sites decorated graphite felt negative electrode achieves high VRFB performance even with the vanadium ions heavily permeable Nafion membrane, showing 13.1 % higher energy efficiency at 200 mA cm –2 (80.2 % vs. 70.9%), 68.1% increase in electrolyte utilization comparing to the pristine graphite felt, and keeping stable during 1500 charge/discharge cycles. The performance is superior to the reported metal−organic frameworks (MOFs)-derived catalyst decorated electrodes.

Bismuth Iron Oxide Catalysts for Efficient CO2 Electroreduction to Formate

Chunxin Xu,Yi Wang,Wanjun Li,Dunfeng Gao,Guoxiong Wang,Rui Cai

Renewable energy-driven electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over bismuth-based catalysts shows great promise for converting CO2 into formic acid and formate while closing the carbon cycle. Herein, we report a high-performance BiFeO3/Bi25FeO40 precatalyst, which delivers a formate partial current density of 359.8 mA cm–2 and a formate formation rate of 6.71 mmol h–1 cm–2 in a flow cell at −0.75 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (vs RHE). Furthermore, it shows stable formate production for 88 h at −0.64 V vs RHE with a total current density of 160 mA cm–2. The impressive electrocatalytic performance toward CO2RR to formate is likely ascribed to the synergistic effect of single Bi atoms and bimetallic BiFe nanoparticles present in close proximity after in situ electrochemical reconstruction of the BiFeO3/Bi25FeO40 precatalyst. This work presents new insights into the development of highly efficient Bi-based catalysts for the CO2RR.
