A general strategy for obtaining BiOX nanoplates derived Bi nanosheets as efficient CO2 reduction catalysts by enhancing CO2•- adsorption and electron transfer

Peng Liu,Huiling Liu,Shun Zhang,Jie Wang,Cheng Wang

Electroreduction of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) into formic acid/formate has been considered as one of the most promising strategies for obtaining value-added fuels and chemical productions. Herein, we present a general method for preparing Bi-based electrocatalysts via in situ reduction of bismuth oxyiodide (BiOI) in CO 2 -saturated electrolyte. The precursors of BiOI nanoplates (P-nanoplates) with thickness of 30–40 nm could be easily obtained and provide a concise model to probe the mechanisms of CO 2 reduction to formate. BiOI nanoplates precursors derived Bi nanosheets (P-nanoplates-Bi) exhibited an excellent performance for CO 2 reduction to formate, achieving Faradaic efficiencies (FEs) over 80% in a wide potential window and a maximum FE approaching of 95% with a current density of 13.3 ± 0.6 mA cm −2 at −0.9 V versus reverse hydrogen electrode (υs. RHE). Such P-nanoplates-Bi nanosheets showed a stable electrocatalytic actitivity during 15 h operation in 0.5 M KHCO 3 aqueous solution. The superior performance is mainly attributed to the two-dimensional (2D) Bi nanosheets, which can increase CO 2 •- adsorption, enlarge active surface area, show better reaction kinetics and provide lower contact resistance with accelerated electron transfer . For comparison, precursors of BiOI plate-like (P-bulk) with doubled thicknesses and ultrathin BiOI with a few nanometers derived Bi catalysts tend to agglomerate and appear as irregular structured Bi nanoparticles during the reaction. Their peak FEs for formate are much lower than those of P-nanoplates derived Bi nanosheets at −0.9 V.

Multi-yolk–shell bismuth@porous carbon as a highly efficient electrocatalyst for artificial N2 fixation under ambient conditions

Yu Qiu,Sen Zhao,Mingxin Qin,Jinxiang Diao,Shuangquan Liu,Lanxin Dai,Wenhua Zhang,Xiaohui Guo

The conventional Haber–Bosch process dominates the production of industrial NH3, and unfortunately leads to a large amount of energy consumption and carbon dioxide emissions. Meanwhile, from the environmentally friendly and energy-saving point of view, electrocatalytic N2 fixation is gradually becoming a more promising and desirable alternative technique. Herein, multi-yolk–shell bismuth@porous carbon (MB@PC) composites were successfully synthesized via a facile simple hydrothermal reaction followed by a subsequent pyrolyzation. The as-prepared MB@PC composite can act as an efficient N2 reduction reaction (NRR) electrocatalyst under ambient conditions. Test results demonstrated that the MB@PC composite catalysts can deliver a high NH3 yield of 28.63 μg h−1 mg−1cat., a Faraday efficiency of 10.58% at −0.5 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, long-term electrochemical durability in N2-saturated 0.1 M HCl solution, and an excellent selectivity for NH3 formation, and are better than most reported bismuth-based electrocatalysts. The excellent NRR performance is mainly ascribed to the synergetic effect of good conductivity, the highly porous feature derived from the carbon framework and intrinsic electrocatalytic NRR activity of bismuth nanoparticles. Generally, the present research findings would provide an alternative avenue to produce other efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts for clean energy applications.

Atomic disorder boost the intrinsic activity of the electrocatalyst for electrochemical CO2 reduction

Xianwei Fu,Ziyu Ma,Luoyu Liu,Sajjad Hussain,Qiuye Li,Dongwei Ma,Shilong Jiao

Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide into formic acid, which is one of the most economically viable chemicals, has been demonstrated as an efficient approach for closing the carbon cycle. However, it’s still challenging to reduce the overpotentials and increase the current densities for the future deployment of the CO 2 electrolysis technology. Here, we boost the intrinsic activity of the Bi-based electrocatalyst through the synergy of the enhanced charge transfer and mass transport process in the electrochemical reactions by generating an atomic disorder in the crystal lattices. The amorphous Bi-based quantum dots (a-BiQDs) serve as promising electrocatalysts toward formate production in a wide potential range with high Faradaic efficiency ( FE ) and energy efficiency ( EE ) in both the conventional H-cell and flow-cell, which is almost 5-fold enhanced in comparison with its crystalline counterpart. The maximum FEs of 94.44 % and 98.89 % are achieved at the potential of −1.0 V vs. RHE in the H-cell and flow-cell, respectively. Furthermore, long-term stability of more than 900 h is demonstrated in a two-electrode configuration. Combined molecular dynamics and first-principle calculations ascribe the remarkable activity toward formate production to synergistically accelerated mass transport and charge transfer kinetics during the electrocatalytic process. This work provides an effective approach for constructing electrocatalysts with high intrinsic activity, desired selectivity, and sufficient durability for large-scale deployment of CO 2 electrolysis technology.

Lattice strain and interfacial engineering of a Bi-based electrocatalyst for highly selective CO2 electroreduction to formate

Wei Xiaoqian,Li Zijian,Jang Haeseong,Kim Min Gyu,Qin Qing,Liu Xien

Surface strain tuning in a coupled heterostructure efficiently engineers the catalytic performance of heterogeneous catalysts by altering the electronic structures and boosting electron transport. Generally, Bi-based catalysts are more favorable than ZnO for CO 2 electroreduction to formate, but Bi is much more costly than Zn. Herein, a new Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO heterojunction catalyst with porous nanoplate morphology is synthesized through a hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide-templated hydrothermal reaction for a highly efficient catalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to produce formate. The Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO catalyst shows a maximum Faradaic efficiency of 92% for formate production at −1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and a large partial current density of −200 mA mg Bi −1 at −1.2 V vs. RHE. More importantly, the mass activity of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO normalized by Bi mass is an approximately 3.1-fold enhancement over that of the pristine Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 at −1.2 V vs. RHE. By coupling X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and adsorption spectroscopy measurements, the charge transfer from the Zn atom to the Bi atom through a heterogeneous interface results in an electron-enriched Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 surface, which facilitates CO 2 capture and activation. Meanwhile, compressive stress produced on the catalyst surface helps optimize the adsorption energy of the reaction intermediate, synergistically enhancing the catalytic selectivity and activity of Bi 2 O 2 CO 3 /ZnO for electrochemical CO 2 reduction to formate.
