Bi2O3 modified TiO2 nanotube arrays and their application towards unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine degradation in wastewater by electroassisted photocatalysis

YiZhi Zeng,Feng Zhou,Yuan Gao

In the present research, the preparation process parameters of TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNAs) prepared by anodic oxidation were systematically studied by the orthogonal experimental method for the first time. Herein, the parameters of nine factors were optimized; the optimal parameters were: the electrolyte was a 0.2 mol L−1 NaF solution with 3% vol H2O at pH 7, the anodic oxidation voltage was 40 V, the electrode spacing was 4 cm and the reaction was carried out for 60 minutes. The physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized by SEM, XRD, EDS, UV-vis, and PL spectroscopy. By electrodeposition of Bi2O3 modified TNAs, the degradation rate of unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) wastewater on the TNAs-10 was 89.14% within 10 h, which was 2.69 times that on pure TNAs. A bias potential of +0.3 V (vs. open circuit potential) was applied to the modified TNAs-10. The degradation rate of UDMH was significantly enhanced on the TNAs-10 (bias) process as compared to the TNAs-10 process. The degradation rate of UDMH wastewater on TNAs-10 (bias) exhibited an exponential distribution. UDMH and its toxic by-products FDMH, NDMA were completely degraded after 8 h.

High energy storage performance of BaTiO3-based films via breakdown strength and polarization properties synergistic optimization

Xue Zhang,Chao Yin,Changhai Zhang,Xu Tong,Jianzeng Guo,Tiandong Zhang,Xubin Wang,Qingguo Chi

Dielectric film capacitors, with remarkable high-power densities, charge-discharge speed, and thermal stability, are promising candidates in advanced power electronics technology. However, the capacitor films still face bottleneck problems of low energy storage density and high energy loss. This study presents a novel modification method designed to synergistically enhance both the breakdown strength and polarization properties of barium carbonate (BaTiO 3 , BTO)-based composite films through Zr 4+ doping and sodium bismuth titanate (Na 0.5 Bi 0.5 TiO 3 , NBT) solid-solution modification. The 0.94BaZr 0.2 Ti 0.8 O 3 -0.06NBT composite films synthesized on Pt/Ti/SiO 2 /Si substrates by sol-gel method exhibit exceptional energy storage performance. Notably, the composite films achieve an impressive recoverable energy density ( W rec ) of 62.08 J/cm 3 and a high charge-discharge efficiency( ղ ) of 85.18 % at the electric field of 6117 kV/cm. The promising results highlight the tremendous potential of the modified BTO-based composite films for transformative applications in advanced energy storage systems.

Visible-light-driven photocatalytic degradation of naproxen by Bi-modified titanate nanobulks: Synthesis, degradation pathway and mechanism

Gongduan Fan,Rongsheng Ning,Jing Luo,Jin Zhang,Pei Hua,Yang Guo,Zhongsheng Li

Naproxen (NPX) as one of the typical pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) has been constantly detected in aquatic environment recently which has potentially hazard to the human health and ecosystem. However, the practical applicability of photocatalysts in degradation of NPX is still restricted by challenges that most nanomaterials need to be stimulated by ultraviolet light and their limited photocatalytic activity under visible light. Therefore, we synthesized bismuth titanate nanobulks (Bi-TNB) through the two-step method of hydrothermal-calcining. The crystal structure, morphology, UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectra and surface adsorption performance of the as-prepared were investigated by XRD, SEM, UV–vis and BET. Several parameters which might influence the degradation efficiency were studied including initial NPX concentration, catalyst dosage, solution pH and concentration of anions, cations and humus. The results indicated that more than 99.9% of NPX (0.25 mg/L) was removed by Bi-TNB (0.5 g/L) at pH = 7. Reactive species scavenging experiments indicated that h + and O 2 ·− were the dominant active species involved the degradation of NPX. In photodegradation process, NPX was firstly decarboxylated and then further photocatalytic oxidized to form carboxylic acids of lower molecular weights and would be finally transformed into CO 2 and H 2 O. PPCPs coexistence experiment showed that acetaminophen would hinder the removal of NPX by Bi-TNB. Both the reaction in different water matrices and degradation under the condition of sunlight indicated that Bi-TNB could be applied in degradation of NPX in environmental water systems. This study provides a new strategy for enhancing material photocatalytic performance to be used in practical applications.

Degradation of acetaminophen in aqueous solution under visible light irradiation by Bi-modified titanate nanomaterials: morphology effect, kinetics and mechanism

Gongduan Fan,Huiping Peng,Jin Zhang,Xiaomei Zheng,Guocheng Zhu,Shumin Wang,Liang Hong

Three morphologies of Bi-modified titanate nanomaterials (Bi-TNM) were prepared using the hydrothermal method and controlled parameters to degrade acetaminophen (ACT). ACT is a high-consumption drug that exists widely in natural waters and wastewaters. The prepared samples were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UV-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and zeta potential analyzers. The morphological effect of Bi-TNM on the visible light-driven catalytic degradation of aqueous ACT was carefully investigated using bulk, flake, and ribbon-shaped titanate catalysts. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared catalysts was evaluated based on the effect of the catalyst morphology, the initial concentration of ACT, the catalyst dosage, and the solution pH. The optimal photocatalytic performance, kinetics, and mechanism of the Bi-TNM for the degradation of ACT were achieved, respectively. The results show that the Bi-TNM photocatalyst not only enhanced the visible light adsorption, but also improved the efficiency of the photoinduced charge transfer with a high efficiency for the degradation of ACT. The photocatalytic activity of the Bi-TNM nanoribbons was significantly improved under visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity for the degradation of ACT was in the order of titanate nanoribbons (Bi-TNR) > titanate nano-bulks (Bi-TNB) > titanate nanosheets (Bi-TNS). The morphology of nanoribbon has a good photocatalytic activity for the degradation of ACT. Furthermore, no inactivation occurred during the three catalytic reactions and Bi-TNR exhibited an excellent photocatalytic stability. Kinetic studies on the photocatalytic degradation of ACT under visible light suggest that the degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The mechanism study showed that the hole in Bi-TNR was mainly involved in the photodegradation of ACT. The present study, using Bi-TNM, provides a better photocatalytic degradation route in comparison with pristine titanate for wastewater treatment contaminated with ACT and other persistent organic pollutants.

A tandem system of Cr/HZSM-5 and bismuth-modified CeZrO2 for coupling of ethane dehydrogenation to selective H2 combustion

Ying Li,Haibo Zhao

Ethylene production via chemical looping oxidative dehydrogenation (CL-ODH) of ethane faces a critical challenge in balancing conversion efficiency and selectivity due to competing oxygen species requirements. Here, we present a bifunctional composite catalyst (CrH/BiCZ) by physically integrating a Cr-HZSM5 (Cr-H) dehydrogenation (DH) catalyst with a Bi 2 O 3 -Ce 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 2 (Bi-CZ) selective hydrogen combustion (SHC) catalyst. This tandem system decouples ethane activation and hydrogen combustion, promoting the DH process of ethane through the in situ hydrogen combustion of the SHC catalyst. The Ce-Zr solid solution in Bi-CZ acts as an oxygen reservoir, enabling complete H 2 combustion within 3 min and suppressing carbon deposition. This rapid hydrogen combustion shifts the reaction equilibrium towards ethylene production. At 650 °C, the optimized CrH/BiCZ catalyst achieves 84.1 % ethylene selectivity at 43.0 % ethane conversion, and maintains exceptional stability over 36 redox cycles. This work establishes a scalable chemical looping strategy for efficient ethylene synthesis.
