Luminescence performance of bismuth activated Ba3Lu2B6O15 phosphors

Xiaojian Zhang,Zhiqin Zhang,Yamin Feng,Honglei Yuan,Gaoliang Wang

Bi 3+ activated Ba 3 Lu 2 B 6 O 15 phosphors were synthesized by sintering at 910 °C for 24 h under air in a muffle furnace. The phase, luminescence properties and potential applications in LED devices were investigated. X-ray diffraction results indicate the successful doping of Bi 3+ ions in Ba 3 Lu 2 B 6 O 15 host. The diffuse reflectance and excitation spectra demonstrate the excitability on UV light. Upon the excitation at 365 nm, the Bi 3+ activated Ba 3 Lu 2 B 6 O 15 phosphors show narrowband blue emission with the peak at 417 nm. The highest emission intensity with the quantum yield of 85.7% and ΔE a value of 0.215 eV is generated by the Ba 3 Lu 1.90 Bi 0.10 B 6 O 15 phosphor. The light characteristics of the UV-pumped LED devices containing the Ba 3 Lu 1.90 Bi 0.10 B 6 O 15 phosphor demonstrate the potential application of Bi 3+ activated Ba 3 Lu 2 B 6 O 15 phosphors in the lighting field.

Visible-to-Near-Infrared Mechanoluminescence in Bi-Activated Spinel Compounds for Multiple Information Anticounterfeiting

Zhicong Chen,Peishan Shao,Puxian Xiong,Yao Xiao,Bingjun Liu,Zhiduo Wang,Sheng Wu,Dongliang Jiang,Kang Chen,Jiulin Gan,Dongdan Chen,Zhongmin Yang

Mechanoluminescence (ML) is the nonthermal luminescence generated in the process of force-to-light conversion, which has broad prospects in stress sensing, wearable devices, biomechanics, and multiple information anticounterfeiting. Multivalence emitter ions utilize their own self-reduction process to realize multiband ML without introducing another dopant, such as Eu3+/Eu2+, Sm3+/Sm2+, and Mn4+/Mn2+. However, self-reduction-induced ML in bismuth-activated materials has rarely been reported so far. In this work, a novel visible-to-near-infrared (vis–NIR) ML induced by the self-reduction of Bi3+ to Bi2+ in the spinel-type compound (MgGa2O4) is reported. The photoluminescence (PL) spectra, PL excitation (PLE) spectra, and PL lifetime curves demonstrate that Bi3+/Bi2+ ions are the main luminescence centers. Notably, the possible self-reduction model is proposed, where a magnesium vacancy (VMg″) is considered as the driving force for the self-reduction of Bi3+ to Bi2+. Furthermore, an oxygen vacancy (VO••) is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Combined with thermoluminescence (TL) glow curves and ML spectra, a plausible trap-controlled ML mechanism is illustrated, where electron–hole (VO••/VMg″) pairs play a significant role in capturing electrons and holes. It is worth noting that the proof-of-concept dual-mode electronic signature application is implemented based on the flexible ML film, which improves the capabilities of signature anticounterfeiting for high-level security applications. Besides, multistimulus-responsive luminescence behaviors of the ML film are realized under the excitation of a 254 nm UV lamp, thermal disturbance, 980 nm laser, and mechanical stimuli. In general, this study provides new insights into designing vis–NIR ML materials toward wider application possibilities.

A Soft Chemistry-Based Route to Near-Infrared Luminescent Bismuth-Activated Glass Films

Zi-Jun Yong,Yang Zhou,Bo-Mei Liu,Dan-Dan Zhou,Hong-Tao Sun

Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent materials activated by bismuth are of fundamental and technological importance because of a broad diversity of high-value applications for optical telecommunications and biomedicine. The preparation of Bi-activated films commonly relies on the physical vapor deposition technique including cosputtering and pulse laser deposition. Such conventional methods consist of the preparation of targets, exploring various preparation parameters using expensive experimental apparatuses, and in situ or postthermal treatment of the as-prepared films. Here, we report on a soft chemistry-based approach for the fabrication of NIR luminescent bismuth-activated glass films. The resulting films demonstrate ultrabroad, long-lived photoluminescence in the range 950–1500 nm. This approach is very flexible, permitting the selection of unusual combinations of active centers to tailor functionality. This strategy greatly enriches the techniques for the preparation of bismuth-activated films, providing great promise for the realization of waveguide-type optical amplifiers and lasers.

Visible and Near-Infrared Emission in Ba3Sc4O9:Bi Phosphor: An Investigation on Bismuth Valence Modification

Yuanyuan Li,Puxian Xiong,Gaochao Liu,Mingying Peng,Zhijun Ma

Bismuth (Bi)-activated luminescence materials have attracted much attention for their tunable broad emissions ranging from a visible to near-infrared (NIR) region. However, it remains a challenge to regulate the Bi valence state and achieve NIR emission via a facile way. Here, we report the design and preparation of Ba3Sc4O9:Bi phosphors, which emit visible and NIR emissions simultaneously even prepared in the air condition. The self-reduction mechanism of Bi3+ species in Ba3Sc4O9 with a rigid crystal structure is illustrated based on the charge compensation model, and the coexistence of different Bi-active centers, Bi3+ for visible emission, while Bi+ and Bi0 for NIR emission, is confirmed by the spectroscopic data and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The enhanced NIR emission was further achieved through controlled reducing treatment and the related mechanism has also been clarified. This work paves a new way to control bismuth valence and tune the emission of Bi-based luminescence materials for emerging photonics applications.

Controllable persistent luminescence in bismuth activated memory phosphors by trap management for artificial intelligence anti-counterfeiting

Dangli Gao,Chengxue Du,Yuqiang Wang,Wenqian Xu,Wenna Gao,Qing Pang,Yuhua Wang

The management of multicolour and multimode luminescence in persistent luminescence (PersL) materials plays a crucial role in encrypting information to combat forgery. Although luminescent anti-counterfeiting has made significant progresses, anti-counterfeiting signals only exhibit typical luminescent emission colours of materials under fixed external stimuli, which makes them susceptible to be replicated. Here, we developed a series of LiReGeO4:Bi,Ln (Re = Lu, Y and Gd, Ln = Eu, Tb, Pr, Yb, Sm, Tm, Ce, Dy and Er) phosphors with multicolour and on-demand controlled PersL emission through purposeful design of the electron–hole pair trap structure. Besides the multicolour and multimode emission, these phosphors demonstrated a temporal memory function for writing information, which provides a new dimension for higher-order anti-counterfeiting. As an example, LiLuGeO4:Bi,Ln (Ln = Eu, Tb, Pr and Yb) memory phosphors display the pattern signals in the order requested by the owner, which makes any sophisticated forgery technique powerless. The study here provides not only a simplistic method for constructing a new-type persistent memory material, but also a new paradigm of artificial intelligence memory for anti-counterfeiting technology.
