Boosting Photocatalytic Nitrogen Fixation via In Situ Constructing Bi Metal Active Sites over BiOBr/BiOI Heterojunction

Kaiyue Gao,Haibao Zhu,Chengming Zhang,Xiaojie Song,Li Lao,Liping Ni,Jianli Chen,Congliang Cheng,Xiufang Wang

The main obstacles to the photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen are the low separation efficiency of photogenerated charges and the few activation sites for nitrogen. It is highly desirable to explore new strategies for improving the nitrogen fixation performance of catalysts. Herein, the Bi metal active sites are constructed on the surface of BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction by in situ reaction, which promote the absorption, activation, and dissociation of nitrogen molecules. Moreover, the existence of Bi metal and BiOBr/BiOI heterojunction enhances the light absorption ability and facilitates the separation and transfer of photogenerated charges. The theoretical calculation also demonstrates that the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi composite has excellent electron structure and electron transfer efficiency. So, the ternary BiOBr/BiOI/Bi catalyst shows excellent performance of photocatalytic reduction of nitrogen to ammonia. The nitrogen reduction rate is 221.9 μmol g −1 h −1 , which is 7.6 and 5 times higher than that of pure BiOBr and BiOBr/BiOI. The mechanism of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation of the BiOBr/BiOI/Bi is proposed based on the experimental and theoretical results. This study provides a novel method for improving the photocatalytic nitrogen reduction performance of catalysts.

Bi metal-modified Bi4O5I2 hierarchical microspheres with oxygen vacancies for improved photocatalytic performance and mechanism insights

Xiufan Liu,Xuyang Xiong,Shuoping Ding,Qingqing Jiang,Juncheng Hu

In this work, we firstly synthesized metallic Bi-modified Bi4O5I2 nanocomposites with oxygen vacancies via a facile one-pot solvothermal method. The deposited Bi metal and oxygen vacancies endowed the Bi/Bi4O5I2 samples with dramatically enhanced photocatalytic performance for degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation. In particular, the improved photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of Bi metal and oxygen vacancies, which resulted in their efficient light harvesting properties and excellent charge separation ability. The photocatalytic mechanism of Bi/Bi4O5I2 for organics degradation was demonstrated. This work could shed light on exploring high photocatalytic performance materials and stimulating the development of non-noble metal/BixOyIz photocatalysts, which would also contribute to advancement in environmental remediation and energy exploitation.

Enhancing visible-light-induced photocatalytic activity of BiOI microspheres for NO removal by synchronous coupling with Bi metal and graphene

Gangqiang Zhu,Mirabbos Hojamberdiev,Shaolin Zhang,Syed Taj Ud Din,Woochul Yang

In order to further improve its photocatalytic activity , the BiOI microspheres were activated by a synchronous coupling of Bi metal and graphene under solvothermal conditions. The effects of the synthesis temperature (160–200 °C) on crystallinity, morphology, and photocatalytic activity were studied in particular. As expected, the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst synthesized at 180 °C exhibited higher photocatalytic activity for NO oxidation removal under visible light irradiation than individual BiOI, and binary Bi-BiOI and BiOI/graphene composites. The photocatalytic efficiency for the NO removal of the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst synthesized at 180 °C reached 51.8% within 30 min of visible light irradiation. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of the ternary Bi-BiOI/graphene photocatalyst is attributed to (I) the efficient transfer of photo-generated electrons from BiOI and Bi to graphene, leading to the effective separation of the photo-generated electron-hole pairs and (II) the surface plasmon resonance effect of Bi nanoparticles in the composite photocatalyst. Furthermore, the results of the scavenger experiments and DMPO-ESR spin-trapping measurements reveal that O 2 − radical species play the most critical role and holes serve as a secondary active species in the oxidative removal process of NO by 180BOI/GR composite under visible light irradiation.

Fast charge separation from synergistic effect of plasma Bi metal and BiOCl/SrTiO3 S-scheme heterojunction promotes NO deep removal

Jiaoping Si,Hongjing Liu,Wendong Zhang,Dengyu Jiao,Wangxing Ai,Yuerui Ma,Lihuan Feng,Xing’an Dong,Wenjie He,Peng Chen

The catalytic conversion of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) to non-toxic products has emerged as a critical strategy for air pollution control under stringent emission regulations. Photocatalytic NO x removal performance highly depends on the transmission of photogenerated electrons and the amount of reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated. Herein, the Bi/BiOCl/SrTiO 3 heterostructure photocatalyst was prepared by a simple in situ synthesis method to address the limitations of conventional NOx removal systems. Due to the synergistic effect of bismuth (Bi) surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and the built-in electric field in BiOCl/SrTiO 3 S-scheme heterojunction, Bi/BiOCl/SrTiO 3 showed strong light absorption ability and high charge separation efficiency, with the highest NO removal efficiency reaching 70 %. The enhanced electronic interaction between Bi and BiOCl/SrTiO 3 induced Bi-O covalent bonds with the BiOCl layer to facilitate fast charge separation, promoting the rapid transfer of interfacial photogenerated carriers, this process induces the activation of O 2 and H 2 O to form reactive oxygen species (ROS) to promote the oxidative removal of NO. This study provides new insights into the development of effective photocatalysts with fast charge separation by synergistic metal active sites and built-in electric field of heterojunction for air pollutant purification.

Oxygen vacancy BiO2-x/Bi2WO6 synchronous coupling with Bi metal for phenol removal via visible and near-infrared light irradiation

Jiafeng Jin,Jinsheng Sun,Kaihe Lv,Xuan Guo,Qilin Hou,Jingping Liu,Jintang Wang,Yingrui Bai,Xianbin Huang

The introduction of oxygen-defects has been a versatile strategy to enhance photocatalysis efficiency. In this work, a 2D/3D Bi/BiO 2-x /Bi 2 WO 6 heterojunction photocatalyst with rich oxygen-defective was in sequence prepared through a facile solvothermal method , which displays favorable photocatalytic activity towards organic contaminants under visible-NIR light irradiation . The enhancement in photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect between oxygen-vacancy-rich heterojunction and the localized surface plasmon resonance induced by metallic Bi. The functional group interaction, surface morphology , crystal structure, element composition , and tuned bandgap were investigated by FT-IR, SEM, Raman shift, ICP-MS, and XPS technique. The spectrum response performance of the photocatalyst was verified by UV–visible DRS analysis. Results of photodegradation experiments toward organic contaminants showed that the prepared photocatalyst can degrade 90% of phenol in 20 mins under visible-NIR light irradiation, both Z-scheme heterojunction and the introduction of Bi metal contribute to the enhancement in the photocatalytic activity. The results of the DFT calculation suggest that the valence band-edge hybridization within BiO 2-x and Bi 2 WO 6 can effectively enhance the photocatalytic performance by increasing the migration efficiencies of electron-hole pairs. Moreover, a possible mechanism was proposed on the results of EIS, ESR and GC–MS tests. This work offers a novel insight for synthesizing efficient visible-NIR light photocatalysis by activating the semiconductors with Bi metal.

Facile Synthesis of Silver-Exchanged Phosphotungstic Acid Immobilized on Sn-Bi Bimetallic Metal–Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Esterification

Qiuyun Zhang,Ting Li,Zhenying Li,Yanhui Lei,Xingyue Hong,Mei Deng,Jingsong Cheng,Zhengjun Liu,Yutao Zhang

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal supports for the synthesis of porous composite catalysts. In the present study, Sn-Bi bimetallic metal–organic frameworks (Sn-Bi-MOFs) supported silver-doped phosphotungstic acid (AgPW) catalysts (AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC and AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 )) were successfully synthesized via a simple in situ impregnation method, which was subsequently applied to catalyze esterification for the production of biodiesel from oleic acid (OA). The physico-chemical properties of the prepared composite catalysts underwent comprehensive analysis through XRD, FTIR, N 2 physisorption, SEM, EDX, NH 3 -TPD, Py-FTIR, TG, and XPS techniques, confirming the successful impregnation of AgPW on the Sn-Bi-MOFs framework. Among the catalysts tested, AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ) exhibited the better catalytic activity than that of Sn-Bi-BDC, Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ), and AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC, reaching 91.6% of OA conversion with the methanol:OA molar ratio of 20:1 and the catalyst quantity of 0.2 g at 130°C for 4 h. The high activity of AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ) is attributed to the available multiscale pore structure, high acidity, and the synergistic action of the Brønsted and Lewis acidic sites. Additionally, the esterification with AgPW@Sn-Bi-BDC (NH 2 ) followed the first-order reaction kinetic model, with an E a of 34.5 kJ/mol. Moreover, the recyclability of the composites was also assessed, demonstrating sustained catalytic activity after four reuses. This approach showed a potential for sustainable and efficient energy production through bimetallic MOFs-based composite catalysts.

Multi-roles of nanoscale bismuth metal-organic frameworks: Infectious photoacoustic probe and inhibitor of antibiotics tolerant bacteria via targeting endogenous H2S

Kai Yuan,Kai Huang,Yiqi Yang,Yixuan Lin,Yihao Liu,Fupeng Li,Yakun Liang,Haishuang Chang,Yuhui Chen,Tingting Tang,Shengbing Yang

Increasing evidence has emphasized the pivotal role of antibiotic tolerance in the evolution of antibiotic resistance , refractory infection and infection recurrence. Moreover, satisfactory treatment of infection relies highly on early, precise detection and subsequent timely therapeutic interventions. In this study, the phenotype of increased production of H 2 S in antibiotic-tolerant Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus ) was identified and proven to be essential to the maintenance of antibiotic tolerance. Hence, a photoacoustic probe for detecting infection as well as an antibiotic enhancer targeting bacterial endogenous H 2 S to eradicate antibiotic-tolerant bacteria was successfully developed based on a bismuth metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF). Bi-MOF achieved early in situ and precise photoacoustic imaging of infection by generating Bi 2 S 3 inside bacteria. Moreover, Bi-MOF enhanced the eradication efficacy of methicillin against tolerant S. aureus by downregulating the intracellular H 2 S levels. Overall, Bi-MOF offers a promising diagnostic tool for early, precise infection diagnosis and a therapeutic strategy for tolerant bacteria-related refractory infection.

Constructing 0D Bismuth-Metal Nanosphere Networks on 1D/2D Bi2WO6 Heteromorphic Junctions for Efficient Photocatalytic Degradation of Acetaldehyde

Yuehui Chen,Shuo Chen,Liang Zhang,Songmei Sun,Panpan Gao,Weiyan Zhu,Jiajia Shen,Jianhua Yan

Semiconductor photocatalysis holds great potential for the degradation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), yet photocatalysts often experience low efficiency due to insufficient surface catalytic active sites, limited light absorption, and poor carrier separation efficiency. Inspired by the structure of Eucalyptus trees, a selective reduction strategy is proposed to grow bismuth nanosphere networks on 1D/2D Bi 2 WO 6 (BWO) heteromorphic junctions, which consist of interwoven mesoporous nanofibers (NFs) and nanosheets (NSs). This establishes a synergistic mechanism of “surface active sites-intrinsic defects-carrier separation.” Initially, the electrospun BWO precursor NFs are calcined in air, resulting in 2D NSs growing radially along the NFs in an ordered, spaced arrangement to form 1D/2D BWO structures. Subsequently, under H 2 /Ar reduction, Bi 3+ species are preferentially reduced to Bi⁰ along the NF axes and NS corners, forming a dynamically evolved metal-defect regulatory system. The 0D/1D/2D Bi-BWO photocatalyst can rapidly degrade 100% of acetaldehyde and exhibits superior stability over five cycles. Its degradation rate is 3.5 times faster than that of 1D/2D BWO and significantly surpasses traditional BWO. This work presents a novel perspective for designing photocatalysts to efficiently remove VOCs.

CO2-assisted rapid synthesis of porphyrin-based Bi-MOFs for photocatalytic CO2 reduction: An efficient strategy for carbon cycle

Mingjie Cheng,Bo Gao,Xiaoli Zheng,Wenzhuo Wu,Weiqian Kong,Pengfei Yan,Zubin Wang,Bin An,Yunpeng Zhang,Qingchao Li,Qun Xu

Exploring a facile, rapid and efficient route to produce metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with highly accessible active sites is of great importance for catalysis. Here we demonstrate the CO 2 coordination can drive low temperature rapid synthesis of porphyrin-based bismuth-MOFs (Bi-PMOFs) by utilizing synergistic physical and chemical properties of supercritical CO 2 (SC-Bi-PMOFs). The molecular-level role of scCO 2 in the synthesis of SC-Bi-PMOFs have been investigated through a series of characterizations including in-situ time-dependent infrared spectroscopy, wherein chemical coordination of CO 2 promotes to fabricate 2D SC-Bi-PMOFs nanosheets. Moreover, the formation of Cu-PMOFs and Fe-PMOFs proves the universal scCO 2 strategy for synthesizing PMOFs. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations together with experiments results confirm the SC-Bi-PMOFs with abundant active sites guarantee efficient ligand-to-metal charge transfer and reduction efficiency of CO 2 . The high-efficiency utilization of CO 2 for synthesizing a series of MOFs and subsequent catalysis on photocatalytic CO 2 reduction for valuable chemicals realize the carbon recycle.

Highly stable two-dimensional bismuth metal-organic frameworks for efficient electrochemical reduction of CO2

Fang Li,Geun Ho Gu,Changhyeok Choi,Praveen Kolla,Song Hong,Tai-Sing Wu,Yun-Liang Soo,Justus Masa,Sanjeev Mukerjee,Yousung Jung,Jieshan Qiu,Zhenyu Sun

We report a unique 2D bismuth metal-organic framework (Bi-MOF) that possesses permanent accessible porosity for efficient electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) to HCOOH. The 2D open-framework structure with helical Bi-O rods bridged by tritopic carboxylate ligands exhibits a remarkable Faradaic efficiency for HCOOH formation over a broad potential window, reaching 92.2 % at ∼ –0.9 V ( vs . reversible hydrogen electrode, RHE) with excellent durability over 30 h. The mass-specific HCOOH partial current density is up to 41.0 mA mg Bi −1 , exceeding 4 times higher than that of commercial Bi 2 O 3 and Bi sheets at ∼ –1.1 V ( vs . RHE). Operando and ex-situ X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy revealed a structural feature associated with Bi-MOF to preserve Bi(3+) during and after long-term ECR. Theoretical calculations further showed that the crystallographically channels with abundant Bi active sites in the MOF structure favor the formation of *HCOO while suppressing the side-reaction of hydrogen evolution, thereby leading to the high selectivity for HCOOH.

Visible-light photocatalytic properties and biological effects of BiOI modified using a bismuth metal-organic framework

Ganghong Huang,Zishun Li,Kun Liu,Yingjie Zhang,Xuekun Tang,Qian Peng,Jing Huang,Guofan Zhang

In this work, a bismuth metal-organic framework is used as a modifier to prepare a modified BiOI photocatalytic material (BBI-2), which is then characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy , N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherm, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. In photocatalytic degradation tests, much higher photocatalytic activity is found for BBI-2 than for pure BiOI. After 75 min of visible-light irradiation, the degradation ratio of 10 mg/L rhodamine B by 100 mg/L BBI-2 can reach 97.14%. In addition, BBI-2 shows good performance in terms of pH applicability and circulation. Photoelectric analysis, free-radical analysis, and energy band analysis make clear that the improvement in the visible-light photocatalytic performance of BBI-2 is mainly due to the optimization of its morphology, size, specific surface area, energy band position, and the transmission and separation properties of photogenerated carriers. The active substances that play a significant role in the photocatalytic system are also determined. A study of biological effects finds that BBI-2 shows distinct photocatalytic antibacterial activity under visible-light irradiation, low cytotoxicity to human primary fibroblasts, and good compatibility with defibrinated rabbit blood.
