Aiming at the preparation of catalysts with well-controlled structures, bimetallic PdCu catalysts containing only small amounts of Pd were prepared by two different methods for partial hydrogenation of acetylene. The highly dispersed and stable PdCu catalyst with the Pd : Cu atomic ratio of 1 : 40 was obtained from a Pd(OH)2/CuMgAl hydrotalcite (HT) precursor by a modified co-precipitation method. The obtained PdCu catalyst possessed uniform PdCu nanoalloys with an average size of 1.8 ± 0.3 nm. As a comparison, the impregnation method was also employed to prepare bimetallic PdCu catalysts and it was confirmed that the Pd-rich(core)–Cu-rich(shell) structure was dominant. Under identical reaction conditions, approximately 100% conversion and 82% selectivity at 100 °C were achieved using the PdCu nanoalloy catalyst which were 23% and 12% higher than those of the Pd-rich(core)–Cu-rich(shell) catalyst. The preferable activity was ascribed to the homogeneous nanoalloy structure and small size effect. The enhanced selectivity was attributed to the strong synergistic effect of PdCu. More significantly, this superior catalytic performance can be retained after 48 h of continuous reaction due to the excellent resistibility against carbon deposition and the confinement effect.

Abstract Homogeneous Cu(I)/NMI/TEMPO catalyst system (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl) has been investigated for its catalysis on the aerobic oxidation of 1-octanol and other alcohols into aldehydes under room temperature. The catalytic species was found to be a Cu(I) centre coordinated by two NMI molecules and other two weakly bound solvent molecules, [Cu(NMI) 2 (Sol) 2 ] + (Sol = solvent). When CuI was used, this species could be [Cu(NMI)I(Sol) 2 ]. Not like being speculated previously, NMI in this system acts solely as a ligand and its role coordinated to the copper centre enhanced the electron density on the metal centre which promoted the O 2 binding in the catalysis. The labile solvent binding to the Cu(I) centre is essential to ensure both oxygen and substrate binding. The catalyst system is suitable for the oxidation of various alcohols using a simple reaction setup and workup. In particular, the system possesses strong oxidizing capability in quantitative conversion of benzylic alcohols regardless of the substituents on the phenyl ring and allylic alcohols into aldehydes. A plausible mechanism was also proposed for the catalysis. Graphical Abstract The aerobic oxidation of primary alcohols at room temperature to corresponding aldehydes was achieved by the catalyst composed by Cu(I) and methyl imidazole (NMI) mediated by TEMPO in acetonitrile. The catalytic species is proposed to be such a Cu(I) complex that two of its four coordinating sites are occupied by a strong ligand(s) and the rest two are weakly bound by solvent molecules.

Copper catalysts prepared using two kinds of supports (BaTiO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 @BaTiO 3 ) have been tested for soot combustion. Perovskite-type oxide BaTiO 3 shows excellent properties as support but has small specific surface area. Fe 2 O 3 @BaTiO 3 core/shell microspheres, as improved support of BaTiO 3 support, were fabricated by a hydrothermal-annealing approach. Fe 2 O 3 @BaTiO 3 support has large specific surface area, which optimizes the contact condition of the gas-soot-catalyst three-phase reaction. Due to the Cu-Fe 2 O 3 @BaTiO 3 interaction, the redox properties of copper are improved. Soot combustion is tested under O 2 gas flow and NO x /O 2 gas flow, and Fe 2 O 3 @BaTiO 3 supported copper catalyst (Cu/Fe 2 O 3 @BaTiO 3 ) all shows higher catalytic activity and CO 2 selectivity than BaTiO 3 supported copper catalyst (Cu/BaTiO 3 ) .

The exploration of inexpensive and stable heterogeneous catalysts for C–S coupling reactions remains a challenging issue. Herein, we successfully prepared a new biomass-derived copper catalyst and applied it to the selective C(sp3)–H-directed sulfonylation of ketone hydrazones with commercial sodium sulfinates. The catalyst was characterized using different spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Importantly, the prepared biomass-supported Cu catalyst catalyzed the C–S coupling reaction with considerably high activity. A variety of aryl and alkyl sulfinates were converted to the corresponding sulfones with good yields. In particular, the heterogeneous catalyst could be recovered easily after the synthesis and consecutively used at least five times with no appreciable decrease in the catalytic activity. Lastly, the copper catalyst is expected to have further applications in organic reactions catalyzed by Cu/CuO2.Keywords:biomass-derived;copper catalysts;heterogeneous;C–S coupling

Doping and interface engineering are both pivotal strategies for enhancing the selectivity of CO 2 reduction catalysts. However, as these strategies have often been explored independently, the question of which is more effective or whether their effects can be synergistically combined remains open. Given that doping and interfaces serve as crystallographic defects, they can be engineered to coexist within the same crystal structure. In this study, we strategically introduced both defects into a copper catalyst by modulating the indium content during crystal growth. Our investigation into the electrochemical performance of these catalysts for CO conversion reveals that while doping consistently enhances conversion selectivity, the presence of Cu/In interfaces disrupts this trend. The most promising catalyst, with 3% indium doping, demonstrated an impressive CO selectivity of 95.38±1.5% and a partial current density of -2.25 mA cm - ² at -0.8 V vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE). This research provides critical insights into the complex interplay between doping and interface engineering, offering a new pathway for the rational design of highly selective CO 2 reduction catalysts.

Copper (Cu) based catalysts are frequently used in CO 2 hydrogenation, particularly in reverse water-gas shift (rWGS) and CO 2 -to-methanol reaction. Cu 0 and Cu + are the key species affecting the catalyst performance and product distribution . Therefore, constructing and adjusting Cu 0 /Cu + active pairs is significant for the catalyst design . In this study, Cu 0 /Cu + active pairs are obtained by utilizing the properties of perovskite-type oxides (PTOs). A series of CaTi 1-x Cu x O 3 and Ca 0.8 La 0.2 Ti 1-x Cu x O 3 (x = 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50) were synthesized via citric acid complexing method and part of the Cu species entered the PTOs lattice. After reduction, large Cu particles and highly-dispersed Cu clusters were obtained simultaneously. The dispersed Cu clusters have more interfaces with the PTOs and provide abundant Cu + while large Cu particles tend to aggregate and supply mainly Cu 0 . Cu 0 activates H 2 and CO 2 and plays a vital role in the rWGS reaction . Cu + is the active site for methanol synthesis and it can strongly absorb CO. The ratio of Cu 0 /Cu + varies with different Cu content and doping La can also adjust the chemical state of surface Cu. The performance test demonstrates that both excessively high and low Cu 0 /Cu + ratios are beneficial for CO generation, while a moderate ratio is suitable for methanol synthesis . These insights provide a method for regulating the chemical state of surface metal species and help the catalyst design for CO 2 hydrogenation.

Ethylene glycol, a widely used chemical, has a large global capacity exceeding 40 million tons per year. Nevertheless, its production is heavily reliant on fossil fuels, resulting in substantial CO 2 emissions. Herein, we report an approach for electrochemically producing ethylene glycol from biomass glycerol. This process involves glycerol electrooxidation to glycolaldehyde at anode, which is subsequently electro-reduced to ethylene glycol at cathode. While the anode reaction has been reported, the cathode reaction remains a challenge. An electrodeposited electrode with metallic Cu catalyst enables us to achieve glycolaldehyde-to-ethylene glycol conversion with an exceptional faradaic efficiency of about 80%. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that metallic Cu catalyst facilitates the C=O activation, promoting glycolaldehyde hydrogenation into ethylene glycol. We further assemble a zero-gap electrolyzer and demonstrate ethylene glycol electrosynthesis from glycerol to give a decent production rate of 1.32 mmol cm –2 h –1 under a 3.48 V cell voltage. The carbon intensity assessment based on a valid assumption reveals that our strategy may reduce CO 2 emissions by over 80 million tons annually compared to conventional fossil fuel routes.

With the rapid development of industry, large-scale fossil energy consumption leads to the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration and the resultant deteriorating global warming. The electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERCO2) technology is a potential strategy to achieve the CO2 emissions reduction and to realize carbon recycling. However, the lack of high product selective, active and stable catalysts is one of the remaining challenges for the industrial applications of ERCO2. Herein, an electrochemical oxidation-reduction reconstruction method is developed to reconstruct the copper network without extra Cu salt addition obtaining Cu2O-Cu (111) catalysts with nanoporous structures for improving the selectivity and activity of CH4 and C2H4 product. The oxidation-reduction reconstruction derived catalyst achieves improved faradaic efficiency of 56.63% for CH4 product and a partial current density of 41.6 mA cm-2 at -1.38 V (vs. RHE). The selectivity and activity toward C2H4 are also improved. The catalytic superiority originates from synergistic interplay between the Cu₂O-Cu heterogeneous interface and high electrochemical active surface area. Additionally, the presence of abundant oxygen vacancies at the Cu2O-Cu interface accelerate the electron transfer process and promote the high selectivity and activity toward CO2-to-CH4. This study paves a new way for enhancing the selectivity and activity of CO2 electrocatalytic conversion to CH4.

BACKGROUND Ordinary clay is an abundantly available and widely distributed material, the use of which as supporting material can minimize the cost in manufacturing catalysts. This study investigated the potential for the direct use of ordinary clay and treated clay as supports of copper (Cu)-based catalysts for hydrogenation of furfural and some phenolic compounds. RESULTS The catalyst treated with alkali showed better activity at 100 °C whereas the activity of other catalysts was negligible, and when the temperature was raised, the activity of all the catalysts was obviously improved. In addition, the catalysts treated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) showed fair activity for 5-hydroxyl methyl furfural, vanillin and benzaldehyde, and the stability of the catalyst also was good: after four cycles of experiments, the yield of furfuryl alcohol could still reach >95%. CONCLUSIONS Activation of clay with NaOH effectively enhanced not only the surface area and porous structures, but also the alkalinity of the catalyst, suppressing side reactions such as acetalization between furfural and ethanol, and facilitated hydrogenation of furfural. Comparing with clay washed with sulfuric acid or calcined at various temperatures, the clay activated with NaOH showed superior hydrogenation of not only furfural, but also 5-hydroxyl methyl furfural, vanillin and benzaldehyde, as a result of the presence of abundant mesopores and alkaline sites. The ordinary clay-supported Cu catalyst also showed acceptable activity for hydrogenation reactions at a higher reaction temperature, which has particular importance for practical applications because the clay can be used directly as supporting material. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Constructing an advanced catalytic system for the purposeful liquefaction of lignin into chemicals has presented a significant prospect for sustainable development. In this work, the catalytic process of mesoporous homologous biochar (HBC) derived from alkali lignin supported copper catalysts (Cu/HBC) was reported for catalytic liquefaction of alkali lignin to monophenols. The characterization results revealed HBC promoted the formation of metal-support strong interaction and the generation of oxygen vacancies , enhancing the acid sites of Cu/HBC. Under the optimal conditions (0.2 g alkali lignin, 280 °C, 0.05 g Cu/HBC, 6 h, 18 mL water), the monophenol yield reached 75.01 ± 0.76 mg/g, and the bio-oil yield was 57.98 ± 1.76%. The copious mesopores, high surface area, and rich acidic sites were responsible for the high activity of Cu/HBC, which significantly outperformed the controlled catalysts, such as HBC, commercial activated carbon (AC), and reported Ni/AC, Ni/MCM-41, etc. In four consecutive runs, the catalytic performance of Cu/HBC was only reduced by 3.65% per cycle. Interestingly, catechol was selectively produced with Cu/HBC, which provided an effective strategy for the conversion of G/S-type lignin to catechyl phenolics (C-type). These findings indicate that the Cu/HBC will be a promising substitution of noble metal-supported catalysts for conversion biomass into high value-added phenolics.

The electrochemical reduction of acetonitrile (AN) to ethylamine (EA) is an attractive yet challenging process, primarily due to the competing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). This study demonstrates the ability to halt the HER at Volmer step, where protons migrate to the unsaturated bond of AN on a self-supported CuO@Cu heterostructure. The CuO@Cu catalyst exhibits nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency (FE) over the entire range of potentials tested from −0.1 to −0.4 V vs. RHE, demonstrating remarkable stability over 1000 h at a constant current density of 0.2 A cm −2 . CuO is identified as the active component driving the reaction, while the metallic Cu facilitates efficient electron transfer. Theoretical simulations and experimental evidences indicate that a synergistic hydrogenation process contributes to the AN reduction reaction (ARR), which involves both surface hydrogen migration and proton addition from solution. This study provides an insight into understanding of ARR process, and suggests an efficient strategy to enhance the electrochemical hydrogenation of organic molecules by regulating the Volmer step.

Catalytic oxidation of C C bond is a key technology to transform petroleum-based as well as sustainable biomass feedstock into more valuable oxygenates. We herein describe a convenient and useful oxidation strategy of converting ketones into carboxylic acids using homogeneous copper catalyst without additives and with O 2 as the terminal oxidant. A wide range of aryl and aliphatic ketones as well as β–O–4 lignin models were selectively oxidized to acids via C C bond cleavage. Mechanism studies by EPR and in situ NMR elucidate the principles of Cu/O 2 reactivity that involves C H bond and O 2 activation via a peroxide species. This provides an important foundation for expanding the scope of useful aerobic oxidation reactions using copper catalysts.
