The presence of heavy metals in wastewater poses a substantial threat to both public health and the environment. However, the selective removal and separation of heavy metal ions at ultra-low concentrations from wastewater remains a considerable challenge. In this paper, we innovatively proposed a magnetic precipitation separation method to remove Cu (II) from wastewater using Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles and Na 2 S. In this process, the Cu (II) was reduced to CuS by Na 2 S, which then rapidly aggregated with Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles to form Fe 3 O 4 -CuS nanoclusters. SEM, DLS, XRD, VSM and XPS studies demonstrated that the removal of Cu (II) was related to the formation of Fe 3 O 4 -CuS nanoclusters. The results indicated that the removal efficiency of Cu (II) from wastewater could reach 99.75 % within 30 s. In contrast, the removal efficiencies of Co (II), Ni (II), and Zn (II) were 7.64 %, 6.14 %, and 8.41 %, respectively. In addition, the Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles were easily regenerated from Fe 3 O 4 -CuS nanoclusters using ultrasound, maintaining 98 % removal efficiency of Cu (II) after six consecutive cycles. These results suggested that this method held great potential for the removal of heavy metals from wastewater.

Ti/RuO2–IrO2 electrode was used in this study as an anode, while titanium plate (Ti) was used as a cathode for electrochemical oxidation process, to explore the influences of related parameters on degradation of p-nitrophenol (PNP) and removal of Cu2+
from mixed simulated wastewater. Using a single chamber reactor, we tested the influence of various factors on the PNP degradation and Cu2+ elimination. The factors that were tested are as follow; the type of electrolyte, density of the current, various values of pH and different
concentrations of Cu2+. Furthermore, a dual-chamber diaphragm reactor compartmentalized by cationic membrane was utilized to explore the removal mechanism of PNP and Cu2+. Results showed that, treatment of PNP-Cu2+ simulated wastewater, with NaCl as electrolyte,
had a better effect compared with Na2SO4, which had characteristics such as shorter reaction time and higher degradation efficiency for PNP. Removal of Cu2+ had no obvious advantage over Na2SO4. The degradation of PNP and removal of Cu2+
were improved with increased current density when the rang was increased from 10 to 40 mA/cm2. Cu2+ concentration when increased initially promoted the degradation of PNP. At the same time, Cu2+ acted as electron acceptor at the cathode that slowed down the
consumption of H+ through reduced combination of H+ with electrons. The degradation rate of PNP decreased with increased initial pH, but the Cu2+ was opposite. In this experiment, the degradation of PNP was positively correlated with indirect oxidation of active
chlorine, and the Cu2+ was removed by cathodic electrodeposition.

In this study, ZnS nanocrystals (NCs) was synthesized and investigated as a novel sorbent for the copper removal from waste water. According to the adsorption experiments, the copper removal efficiency is over 99.0% in one minute. The saturated adsorption capacity of ZnS NCs sorbent on copper is about 650 mg/g which is closed to the theoretic adsorption capacity. The influence of pH value, other metal ions and NCs sorbent size on copper removal efficiency were investigated, respectively. The ZnS NCs sorbent was characterized by TEM and XPS to reveal the reaction mechanism. It was found that the NCs layer thickness played an important role in copper removal by ZnS NCs sorbent. It is more difficult to remove the copper from water for the sorbents with thicker NCs layer. Heat treatment method promoted the copper removal performance of sorbent greatly. Additionally, the sorbent and the copper removed by sorbent could be reclaimed easily. Therefore, it is a promising method to remove the copper from water by ZnS NCs sorbent.

Solid–liquid separation and the settleability of sludge are always issues in copper wastewater treatment by chemical precipitation. To improve the settling performance of chemical precipitation sludge, controlled double-jet precipitation (CDJP) was used to treat wastewater by generating chemical precipitation granular sludge (CPGS). Several parameters such as the pH, copper oxide (CuO) seed dosage, stirring rate, adding rate and polyacrylamide dosage affecting the formation of the CPGS and wastewater treatment were investigated. Results show that the Cu(II) removal efficiency is over 99% and the settling velocity of the CPGS can reach up to 8.1 cm s−1 under optimized conditions, i.e., pH of 11, seed type of common CuO, seed dosage of 2.5 g L−1, stirring rate of 600 rpm, adding rate of 0.5 mL min−1 and PAM dosage of 20 g L−1. This settling velocity was about 18 times higher than that of chemical flocculent sludge. More importantly, the CPGS formation mechanism was explored. A three-step formation mechanism was proposed involving fresh precipitate growth on the seed surface, flocculation, and rearrangement with stirring.

Cu/Zn/Al-hydrotalcite-like compound (Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc) was prepared by the coprecipitation method with ZnII, AlIII cations solution, and electroplating wastewater containing CuII cation. The preparation conditions of Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc were optimized. The metal ion pollutants removal effect and iodide maximum adsorption capacity of Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc were also studied. The physicochemical properties of the Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, FTIR, SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, and TG-DTG. The results showed that Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc should be prepared with the ZnII-AlIII molar ratio of 1.5 : 1, pH = 11, and aged at room temperature for 0.5 d. Structural analysis showed that the Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc was a layered compound. CuII and other metal ion pollutants can also be successfully removed from electroplating wastewater in the preparation process of Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc and reached Chinese National Emission Standard (GB 21900-2008). The optimal adsorption condition of calcinated Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc for iodide was as follows: the solid-liquid ratio was 1 : 250, the pH value was 8, and the adsorption process was carried out at 25°C for 30 min. The saturated adsorption capacity reached 1000 mg·g−1 at the optimal adsorption condition. The main reason for this high-saturated adsorption capacity of Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc was that iodide penetrated into the layered structure of Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc by physical adsorption and CuII undergoes a specific redox reaction, producing CuI. Hence, coprecipitation synthetic technology and prepared Cu/Zn/Al-HTlc could be potentially used for electroplating wastewater treatment.

Cu (II) is one of the most harmful heavy metals in the environment, due to the hazardous effects to aquatic organisms, plants, animals, and human beings. In this work, a novel modified magnetic biochar (MBC@APTES-PAMAM) was prepared by PAMAM dendrimer for the removal of Cu (II). The analysis of structural properties identically demonstrated that the abundant -NH 2 groups were successfully loaded onto magnetic biochar surfaces. The sorption kinetics process of Cu (II) onto MBC@APTES-PAMAM was better fitted by the pseudo-second-order model. Langmuir isotherm model was better described for Cu (II) sorption process. MBC@APTES-PAMAM showed outstanding performances on Cu (II) removal, and the maximal adsorption amount was 251.81 mg/g. Adsorption experiment indicated that MBC@APTES-PAMAM had a higher Cu (II) removal efficiency under the pH range from 2 to 8. The adsorption capacity of Cu (II) onto MBC@APTES-PAMAM was decreased in the presence of competing ions. The existence of surfactant and humic acid had great influences on Cu (II) adsorption process. The Cu (II) adsorption mechanism was connected to the -NH 2 by complexation reaction, due to the increased electrostatic attraction and bridging influences. In addition, MBC@APTES-PAMAM also exhibited comparable removal performances for COD (70.82%), TN (71.10%), TP (100%), NH 3 N (55.03%) and Cu (II) (99.68%) in the practical treatment of landfill leachate. Overall, MBC@APTES-PAMAM is a green, low-cost, and high efficiency adsorbent for Cu (II) removal.

Novel copper (II) ion imprinted polymers (Cu(II)-IIPs) were designed and synthesized as solid phase absorbents for the selective deep removal of Cu 2 + from concentrated zinc sulfate solution. Salicylaldoximes, used as chelating ligands, were anchored onto the polymer networks through quaternary ammonium cation spacers. The effect of pH, temperature, contact time, and swelling on the adsorption selectivity and the copper removal efficiency of Cu(II)-IIPs were investigated in a laboratory-scale cell. The results showed that the adsorption of Cu 2 + increased significantly with increasing pH from 1 to 7, and increased with decreasing operation temperature. The equilibrium Cu 2 + adsorption capacity of Cu(II)-IIPs from the zinc sulfate aqueous solution was 96 mg·g − 1 at 25 °C in pH 5.0 for 10 min. Under optimized processing conditions, the copper removal efficiency reached 99.9%, and the concentration of the residual copper (II) ions in the purified ZnSO 4 aqueous solution is 35 μg·L − 1 , significant lower than the maximum acceptable value as 100 μg·L − 1 in the hydrometallurgical zinc process.

Hydrogel adsorbents are promising tools for reducing heavy metals' bioavailability in contaminated soil. However, their practical feasibility remains limited by the low stability, inefficient removal efficiency, and potential secondary pollution. Optimizing the adsorption operation and the functional properties of hydrogel adsorbents could eliminate this method's drawbacks. Herein, three innovative in-situ remediation strategies for Pb/Cu-contaminated soil were adopted based on the concept of novel TEMPO-cellulose (TO-NFCs)/lignin/acrylamide@MIL-100(Fe) nanocomposite hydrogel adsorbent (NCLMH). Characteristic analyses revealed ideal Pb/Cu adsorption mechanisms by swelling, complexation, electrical attraction, and ion exchange via carboxyl/hydroxyl/carbonyl groups and unsaturated Fe(III) sites on ANCMH besides FeOOH formation. The highest maximum theoretical adsorption capacities of Pb(II) and Cu(II) on ANCMH were 416.39 and 133.98 mg/g, under pH 6.5, governed by pseudo-second-order/Freundlich models. Greenhouse pot experiments with contaminated soils amended with two-depth layers of 0.5% NCLMHs (SA@NCLMH) displayed a decline in Pb and Cu bioavailability up to 85.9% and 74.5% within 45 d. Soil column studies simulating continuous water soil flushing coupled with NCLMH layers, instead of conventional extractant fluids, and connected to NCLMH-sand column as purification unit (CF@NCLMH) achieved higher removal rates for Pb, and Cu of 89.5% and 77.2% within 24 h. Alternatively, conducting multiple-pulse soil flushing mode (MF@NCLMH) gained the highest Pb and Cu removal of 96.5% and 85.4%, as the water flushing-stop flux events allowed adequate water movement/residence period, promoting Pb/Cu desorption-adsorption from soil to NCLMH. Also, the NCLMH-sand column conducting and easy separation of the stable/reusable NCLMHs prevented the potential secondary pollution. Interestingly, the three remediated soils reached the corresponding regulation of the permissible limits for Pb and Cu residential scenarios in medium-to-heavily agricultural polluted soils, alleviating the Pb/Cu bioaccumulation and phytotoxicity symptoms in cultivated wheat, especially after MF@NCLMH treatment. This study introduces promising alternative remediation strategies with high sustainability and feasibility in acidic-to-neutral heavy metal-contaminated agricultural soil.
