Tribological performance of Cu-modified large interlayer spacing 1 T/2H-MoS2 nanoparticles in soot-contaminated polyalphaolefin

Hengyang Liu,Wanyuan Li,Yong Xu,Enzhu Hu,Guangchao Qin,Kunhong Hu

A 1 T/2H-MoS 2 (THM) lubricant additive was synthesized via a solvothermal method to improve the lubrication of poly-alpha-olefin (PAO) and reduce the negative influence of diesel carbon soot (CS). The THM was then modified with Cu to further enhance the wear resistance. The average interlayer spacing of MoS 2 in THM and the Cu-modified THM (CTHM) was 0.99 nm, significantly larger than the 0.63 nm of 2H-MoS 2 nanoparticles. In PAO, CTHM demonstrated a 45 % improvement in friction reduction and a 77 % increase in wear resistance compared to 2H-MoS 2 . While the friction reduction of CTHM was similar to that of THM, CTHM exhibited 36 % superior wear resistance. In CS-contaminated PAO, CTHM outperformed 2H-MoS 2 with a 37 % reduction in friction and a 29 % enhancement in wear resistance. The Cu modification reduced the oxidation of CTHM and the conversion of 1 T-MoS 2 to 2H-MoS 2 in the tribofilm, contributing to improved wear resistance. The CS contamination negatively influenced the lubrication by accelerating MoS 2 oxidation, catalyzing the transition from 1 T-MoS 2 to 2H-MoS 2 , and inhibiting Cu incorporation into the tribofilm. Nonetheless, the effect of CS on CTHM and THM was less severe than on 2H-MoS 2 . This work provides an alternative method to alleviated the antagonism between MoS 2 and CS.

Design of Cu-based MIL-100(Fe) catalyst for propylene-selective catalytic reduction of NOx: Combination of activity, characterizations and mechanism

Wei Fu,Muhammad Kashif,Chen Cai,Jiayin Chen,Hao Zhou,Bingtao Zhao,Philippe M. Heynderickx,Yaxin Su

The hydrothermal technique was applied to prepare a new metal–organic framework, MIL-100(Fe), which was modified by ultrasonic impregnation with different wt % of copper. The results showed that the NO x conversion over 2.3Cu-MIL-100(Fe) was 100 % at 275 °C and maintained at ≥ 85 %, with N 2 selectivity ≥ 90 % in the temperature range of 275–400 °C and high SO 2 resistance. An increase in the Cu content up to 2.3 wt% showed the highest surface area (1206 m 2 /g) observed in N 2 adsorption–desorption. The results show that the introduction of Cu increased the oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface. Electron transfer and a synergistic effect were observed between Cu and Fe. The shift of the reduction peaks to lower temperatures after the addition of Cu confirmed that Cu improved the reducibility of the catalysts. The 2.3Cu-MIL-100(Fe) exhibited the highest Lewis content (44.97 μmol/g), which functions as an active site for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) reaction. By precisely controlling the acid-base properties of the catalyst, the specificity for the desired products can be increased in complicated reaction systems, especially in hydrocarbon-SCR technology.

Cu-Modified ZSM Zeolite Has Synergistic Flame Retardance, Smoke Suppression, and Catalytic Conversion Effects on Pulp Fiber After Ammonium Polyphosphate Flame-Retardant Treatment

Guochao Yang,Jingrui Cai,Yaru Geng,Bingbing Xu,Qiuhui Zhang

After the flame-retardant treatment, a pulp fiber has the problems of high smoke production and high smoke toxicity. To solve the above problems, a ZSM zeolite after copper modification was added to the ammonium polyphosphate (APP) flame-retardant pulp, and the effects of the modified ZSM zeolite on flame retardance, smoke suppression, and toxicity reduction were investigated. The content of Cu in the ZSM zeolite modified by ion exchange and calcination (500Cu-Z) was 1.73%, and its existing forms were free Cu2+, combined Cu2+, and Cu+. After modification, the strength of the weak and medium strong acids in the zeolite decreased, and the total acid content decreased by 10.90%. However, in the high-temperature range, a new strong acid site appeared. Compared with the APP-treated pulp fiber, the addition of 500Cu-Z could reduce the carbonization length, and the amount of smoke released decreased by 63.28% at the same time. The analysis of the gas composition indicates that the 500Cu-Z zeolite can reduce the relative concentration of CO to decrease the toxicity of smoke in the combustion process. A stronger flame-retardant layer was formed on the surface of the pulp fiber after adding zeolite and APP. There were chemical bonds such as P═O, C═C, C–O, Si–O–Si on the surface of the flame-retardant layer of 500Cu-Z/A/Pulp2.0. The 500Cu-Z zeolite had a synergistic flame-retardant effect with APP on the pulp fiber. After combustion, it was shown that a phosphoric acid layer existed on the surface of the fiber. The addition of zeolites can form a mosaic mechanism between the zeolite and the phosphoric acid layer to strengthen the flame-retardant layer. To conclude, the flame-retardant layer may reduce the generation of smoke and 500Cu-Z zeolites in layer catalytic CO to CO2 in smoke to reduce toxicity.

Comprehensive study of alkali lignin pyrolysis catalyzed by composite metal-modified molecular sieves for the preparation of hydrocarbon liquid fuels

Huan Liu,Huili Liu,Jianhang Hu,Wenrui Zhong,Zhikai Hu,Hua Wang

Catalytic lignin pyrolysis for hydrocarbon liquid fuel production offers a viable alternative to fossil fuels . This study investigated the effects of transition metal (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu) modified composite molecular sieve catalysts on the pyrolysis product distribution and behavior of alkali lignin (AL). AL pyrolysis achieved the highest liquid product yield of 24.50 % at 600 °C, with high temperatures favoring hydrocarbon product formation. Volatile gaseous products from AL pyrolysis included H 2 , CO, CO 2 , phenolic compounds, heteroatomic compounds, and hydrocarbons. Molecular sieve catalyst additions were all favorable to the increase in hydrocarbon content. Compared with ZSM-5 and SBA-15, catalysts processed through acid etching and metal modification exhibited optimized pore structure , acid site distribution, and catalytic performance. Metal-modified composite molecular sieve catalysts (FeZS, CoZS, NiZS, and CuZS) generated more liquid products and promoted hydrocarbon formation. Notably, Cu-modified ZS catalysts exhibited superior acid site distribution and specific surface area, considerably reducing oxygenated compounds in the products. A higher catalyst-to-feedstock ratio increased the number of catalytically active sites, facilitating the cracking and deoxygenation of oxygenated components and generating more hydrocarbon products. The highest hydrocarbon yield for AL with a catalyst-to-biomass ratio of 10:1 under CuZS was 92.25 %, with 66.07 % being monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) and 61.72 % benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene , and xylenes (BTEX). Additionally, kinetic and thermodynamic analyses revealed a substantial decrease in the average activation energy (E α ) of AL and a reduction in entropy value with the CuZS catalyst, indicating enhanced pyrolytic reactivity of AL. Therefore, the proposed method is highly effective for producing highly selective hydrocarbons through catalytic pyrolysis of AL.

An efficient and sulfur resistant K-modified activated carbon for SCR denitrification compared with acid- and Cu-modified activated carbon

Zhicheng Xu,Yuran Li,Junxiang Guo,Jin Xiong,Yuting Lin,Tingyu Zhu

In this work and for the first time, an alkali metal potassium (K) as a promoter was loaded on an activated carbon (AC) to be used for selective catalytic reduction of NO from industrial flue gas. The denitrification activity of K-modified AC samples was investigated and compared with those of acid- and Cu-modified AC samples. The three modifications can enhance the denitrification activity of AC samples. To investigate the enhanced mechanisms of denitrification and SO 2 resistance, various AC samples were characterized by SEM, EDX, XRF, ICP, XRD, N 2 physisorption, H 2 -TPR, XPS, in situ DRIFTS and TPD. For the acid modification, the content of phenolic hydroxyl increases and then promotes the adsorption of NH 3 . For the loading of Cu, the appearance of Cu 2+ /Cu + sites with high catalytic activity promotes NH 3 and NO adsorption and changes the reaction pathway. For the loading of K, the adsorption capacity for NO increases nearly 12 times higher than that on Raw-AC, of which 85.0% is chemical adsorption. Moreover, three kinds of active nitrate species additionally forms, including nitro compounds, monodentate nitrate and nitrous oxide, which promote the denitrification reaction path. AC-Cu has poor sulfur resistance due to the sulfation of Cu, while AC-K show good sulfur resistance due to the enhanced adsorption of NO. The catalytic dissociation activity of N 2 O on AC-K makes the formation and decomposition of N 2 O into a dynamic equilibrium. As a result, AC-K has a high N 2 selectivity , while AC-Cu has poor N 2 selectivity.

Hexaniobate as a Recyclable Solid Base Catalyst to Activate C–H Bonds in Lignin Linkage Boosting the Production of Aromatic Monomers

Jie Li,Zhen Li,Jing Dong,Renbo Fang,Yingnan Chi,Changwen Hu

The targeting cleavage of lignin into value-added aromatic monomers has attracted increasing attention. Although the base-catalyzed depolymerization of lignin has been developed, the use of excess corrosive bases and their poor recyclability limit their industrial implementation. Herein, a catalytic amount of solid base K7HNb6O19 (KNb6) coupled with copper-modified graphitic carbon nitride (Cu/C3N4) shows enhanced catalytic performance for the oxidative cleavage of β-O-4 lignin linkages using molecular oxygen. Due to the synergetic effect between KNb6 and Cu/C3N4, 96% of the β-O-4 ketone model was converted under relatively mild conditions, and phenol (yield: 90%) and other aromatic monomers (yield: 90%) were obtained. Moreover, KNb6–Cu/C3N4 is robust, and its catalytic activity is basically maintained after five cycles. Experimental and theoretical studies (spectroscopic analysis, control experiments, kinetic study, density functional theory calculations, etc.) reveal that the surface basic O atoms of KNb6 can simultaneously activate the Cβ–H bond of β-O-4 ketone to promote the insertion of molecular oxygen, and subsequently, Cu/C3N4 catalyzes the selective cleavage of the Cα–Cβ bond. The catalysts were also active for the oxidative cleavages of other lignin models and oxidized organosolv lignin.

Combination of co-pyrolyzed biomass–sludge biochar and ultrasound for persulfate activation in antibiotic degradation: efficiency, synergistic effect, and reaction mechanism

Jiang Wan,Liu Yiming,Wang Shenpeng,Yang Haifeng,Fan Xiulei

View large Download slide View large Download slide Close modal A carbon material Cu-corn straw-sludge biochar (Cu-CSBC) was prepared by hydrothermally modifying sewage sludge and corn stover. The composite coupled to ultrasound can effectively catalyze the activation of PS for organic pollutants degradation, and the removal rate of 20 mg/L TC reached 89.15% in 5 min in the presence of 0.5 g/L Cu-CSBC and 3 mM PS. The synergistic effect between the factors in the system, the reaction mechanism, and the efficient removal of TC in the aqueous environment were explored in a Cu-CSBC/US/PS system established for that purpose. Quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis both demonstrated the Cu-CSBC/US/PS system generated • OH, SO 4 –• , 1 O 2 , and O 2 - • , which involved in the reaction. The Cu, carboxyl, and hydroxyl groups on the Cu-CSBC surface promoted the generation of radicals and non-radicals for the degradation process, which was dominated by both radical and non-radical pathways. The degradation pathway is proposed by measuring the intermediate products with LC-MS. Finally, the stability of the Cu-CSBC/US/PS system was tested under various reaction conditions. This study not only prepared a novel biochar composite material for the active degradation of organic pollutants by PS but also provided an effective method for the resource utilization of solid waste and sludge treatment. Cu-CSBC prepared from co-pyrolyzed biomass–sludge to activate PS. US and Cu-CSBC have a positive synergistic effect on the system. The TC removal efficiency of the Cu-CSBC/US/PS system exceeded 99%. The US can promote the production of free radicals in the system. The main intermediates and pathways of TC degradation were identified.

Copper Modified Boron Nitride And Graphene Combined To Self-Assemble Three-Dimensional Thermal Conductivity Framework to Improve the Thermal Conductivity of Epoxy Resin

Li Shuo,Wu Wei,Drummer Dietmar,Tomiak Florian,Wang Yi,Lu Zijian,Zhao Xintong

With the development of integrated circuits and the miniaturization/ integration of electronic devices, heat dissipation solutions have become an increasingly important issue. The thermal conductivity of polymer-based thermal management materials is typically influenced by the amount of incorporated fillers. However, an innovative solution to increase the thermal conductivity without increasing the total filler content is the improvement of the filler connectivity by using specific surface modifications. Surface modifications using thermal conductive submicron particles can reduce the interfiller distances, acting as thermal bridges between the particles. In this paper, copper submicron particles modified BN (BN@CuSMPs) have been prepared by in situ reduction and mixed with graphene oxide (GO). A three-dimensional BN@CuSMPs/rGO aerogel (CBGA) framework with "point-surface" connection has been prepared by using the self-assembly mode of GO. CBGA/EP composites were then prepared using epoxy resin (EP) as matrix and a vacuum assisted impregnation method. The thermal conductivity of CBGA/EP composites has been found to be 1.918 W m −1  K −1 using a filler content of 19.61%, which was 12.8% higher than that of BN/rGO/EP composites and 909.5% higher than that of pure EP. The thermal resistance of the composites was analyzed using the Foygel model. It was found that the introduction of CuSMPs effectively decreased the thermal resistance between the BN particles, forming a thermal conductive three dimensional network inside the polymer-based material system.

Structural/surface characterization of transition metal element–doped H-ZSM-5 adsorbent for CH3SH removal: identification of active adsorption sites and deactivation mechanism

Xie Yuxuan,Peng Xiao,Song Xin,Ning Ping,Sun Xin,Ma Yixing,Wang Chi,Li Kai

CH 3 SH is a potential hazard to both chemical production and human health, so controlling its emissions is an urgent priority. In this work, a series of transition metal-loaded H-ZSM-5 adsorbents (Si/Al = 25) (Cu, Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, and Zn) were synthesized through the wet impregnation method and tested for CH 3 SH physicochemical adsorption at 60 °C. It was shown that the Cu-modified H-ZSM-5 adsorbent was much more active for CH 3 SH removal due to its abundant strong acid sites than other transition metal-modified H-ZSM-5 adsorbents. The detailed physicochemical properties of various modified H-ZSM-5 adsorbents were characterized by SEM, XRD, N 2 physisorption, XPS, H 2 -TPR, and NH 3 -TPD. The effects of metal loading mass ratio, calcination temperature, and acid or alkali modification on the performance of the adsorbent were also investigated, and finally 20% Cu/ZSM-5 was found to have the best adsorption capacity after calcined at 350 °C. Additionally, the Cu/ZSM-5 adsorbent modified by sodium bicarbonate could expose more active components, which improved the adsorbent’s stability. However, the consumption and reduction of the active component Cu 2+ and the accumulation of sulfate during the adsorption process are the main reasons for the deactivation of the adsorbent. In addition, the simultaneous purging of N 2  + O 2 can effectively restore the adsorption capacity of the deactivated adsorbent and can be used as a potential strategy to regenerate the adsorbent. Synthesis of CuI-modified thiol-functionalized MCM-41 silica-based materials and their catalytic tetralin performance

Wu Chengqiang,Li Yingping,Ma Yongping,Lei Yuexiang,Wang Meijing,Chen Zhen

A novel loaded copper ion catalyst, Cu/MCM-41-SH, was synthesized using CuI-modified thiol-functionalized MCM-41 silica-based materials, and the prepared catalysts were characterized by XPS, FT-IR, SEM and N 2 adsorption–desorption techniques. The XPS results indicated that the chemical valence of the copper that adsorbed on the CuI/MCM-41-SH surface was + 1 valence. N 2 adsorption–desorption showed that the adsorption–desorption isotherms of both MCM-41 and CuI/MCM-41-SH materials were type IV with H4-type hysteresis loops, and the pore size and specific surface area of the materials were reduced. This work demonstrates that that when the reaction time was 2 h, the reaction temperature was 80 ℃ and the catalyst dosage was 100 mg, the conversion of tetralin was obtained as 92.63% and the selectivity of α-tetralone was 84.84%. The catalyst showed good reusability in the three recovery experiments. These results show that the catalyst has potential applications for green and sustainable development.

Cu-Modified Palladium Catalysts: Boosting Formate Electrooxidation via Interfacially OHad-Driven Had Removal

Zheng Tang,Yongjia Li,Lanlan Shi,Kaixin Zhang,Yingjie Ji,Xiaoxuan Wang,Yebo Yao,Xia Liu,Dewei Wang,Kaiqi Nie,Jiangzhou Xie,Zhiyu Yang,Yi-Ming Yan

Direct formate fuel cells have gained traction due to their eco-friendly credentials and inherent safety. However, their potential is hampered by the kinetic challenges of the formate oxidation reaction (FOR) on Pd-based catalysts, chiefly due to the unfavorable adsorption of hydrogen species (Had). These species clog the active sites, hindering efficient catalysis. Here, we introduce a straightforward strategy to remedy this bottleneck by incorporating Pd with Cu to expedite the removal of Pd–Had in alkaline media. Notably, Cu plays a pivotal role in bolstering the concentration of hydroxyl adsorbates (OHad) on the surface of catalyst. These OHad species can react with Had, effectively unblocking the active sites for FOR. The as-synthesized catalyst of PdCu/C exhibits a superior FOR performance, boasting a remarkable mass activity of 3.62 A mg–1. Through CO-stripping voltammetry, we discern that the presence of Cu in Pd markedly speeds up the formation of adsorbed hydroxyl species (OHad) at diminished potentials. This, in turn, aids the oxidative removal of Pd–Had, leveraging a synergistic mechanism during FOR. Density functional theory computations further reveal intensified interactions between adsorbed oxygen species and intermediates, underscoring that the Cu–Pd interface exhibits greater oxyphilicity compared to pristine Pd. In this study, we present both experimental and theoretical corroborations, unequivocally highlighting that the integrated copper species markedly amplify the generation of OHad, ensuring efficient removal of Had. This work paves the way, shedding light on the strategic design of high-performing FOR catalysts.

Facile NaBH4-cu dual modification of CoFe Prussian blue analogues for enhanced peroxymonosulfate activation toward tetracycline degradation

Yisha Zheng,Huiqin Zhang,Qiuwen Huang,Yanhui Zhang,Xian Zhang,Wenlong Xiang

Tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), as a representative antibiotic pollutant, poses significant environmental risks due to its persistence and ecotoxicity. Conventional degradation technologies are often hampered by inefficiency and high operational costs. To overcome these limitations, a simple sodium borohydride (NaBH 4 ) reduction method was employed to modify CoFe Prussian blue analogue (CoFe-PBA), significantly its intrinsic activity. Subsequently, low-level Cu loading (2 wt%) was introduced, further substantially boosting the degradation efficiency. Comprehensive characterization confirmed that this sequential modification optimizes the material structure and enhances the density of active sites. The optimized 2 %Cu/CoFe PBA catalyst efficiently activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS), achieving >96 % TCH removal within 30 min under optimal conditions. In addition, the 2 %Cu/CoFe PBA exhibited excellent stability across a broad pH range (5–11) and in complex anionic environments. Radical quenching experiments and mechanism analysis revealed that non-radical singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and sulfate radical (SO 4 · − ) pathways were the dominant contributors to TCH degradation, with superoxide radical (O 2 · − ) and hydroxyl radical (∙OH) playing comparatively minor roles. This high performance stems from synergistic Fe/Co/Cu interactions promoting efficient PMS activation. This work provides a facile, efficient modification strategy (NaBH 4 reduction and minimal Cu loading) for PBAs and clarifies the predominant reactive species responsible for high-performance antibiotic degradation.
