Research on highly efficient catalysts for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a challenge. In this work, we successfully wrap copper (Cu) inside of copper phosphide (Cu 3 P) nanoparticle to form a copper/copper phosphide (Cu/Cu 3 P) core/shell structure attached on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for enhanced HER activity in acid. The average size of the core/shell particles is around 25 nm, with about 5 nm of Cu 3 P as the outer layer. The catalytic activity of the core/shell structure is significantly promoted compared to the metallic Cu and Cu 3 P pure phases nanoparticles on CNTs, requiring overpotentials of 84 and 161 mV to achieve 10 and 100 mA cm −2 of current density, respectively. The core/shell structure also presents high HER durability and stability, with the polarization curve overlapped after 5000 cycles of CVs and steady current density at 25 mA cm −2 for as long as 10 h. To account for the promoted HER performance, the Cu/Cu 3 P structure is fully investigated by physical and electrochemical characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The DFT results depict that the neutralized the adsorption Gibbs free energy of hydrogen atoms (ΔG H∗ ) is induced by the electronic interactions between metallic Cu and phosphide phase.

Metal nanoparticles have been found to exhibit a broad spectrum of antibacterial activities, yet not all metals possess the captivating plasmonic properties necessary for effective interaction with incident light. In this study, we demonstrate the feasibility of synergistically enhancing the Cu-induced antibacterial activity through the incorporation of plasmonic photothermal therapy by hybridlike anchoring the Cu component on a gold (Au) nanoplate that can effectively absorb near-infrared light. To fabricate the Janus structure, plate-like Au seeds were mixed with copper(ii) nitrate, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, ascorbic acid, and hexamethylenetetramine, resulting in the formation of Au–Cu Janus nanostructures (JNSs). Notably, the plasmonic absorption of Au was preserved without being hindered by the Cu coating. Photothermal measurements revealed that the temperature rise of Au–Cu JNSs aqueous suspensions could reach up to 28.3 °C in just 10 min when exposed to 1064 nm laser light at a power density of 1 W·cm–2, with a photothermal conversion efficiency of 42.14%. Additionally, they show broad-spectrum antibacterial properties, making them potential contenders for addressing a wide range of bacterial infections. Our findings demonstrate that the antibacterial performance of metal nanoparticles composed of less plasmon-active components but with exceptional antibacterial properties can be significantly enhanced by coupling them with a plasmon-active nano-antenna through a Janus architecture. The Au–Cu JNSs possess potential application prospects in photothermal therapy, broad-spectrum antibacterial treatments, biomedical imaging, targeted drug delivery, sensitive diagnostics, and the development of advanced materials.

Copper (Cu) is a kind of micronutrient element that is essential for human metabolism. However, it is also considered as an environmental pollutant which is toxic to organisms at a high concentration level. Probiotics , regarded as beneficial microorganisms for promoting human health, have functions of antioxidant capacity, immune-enhancing properties, intestinal barrier protection and regulation. Several studies have reported that probiotics show positive effects on alleviating and intervening heavy metals toxicity. However, evidence for relieving copper-induced toxicity by probiotics is still limited. In this study, we firstly conducted a zebrafish larvae model to screen out microorganisms which are helpful for CuSO 4 toxicity resistance and one novel strain named as Bacillus coagulans XY2 was discovered with the best protective activity. B. coagulans XY2 significantly reduced the mortality of zebrafish larvae exposed to 10 µmol/L CuSO 4 for 96 hr, as well as alleviated the neutrophils infiltration in the larvae lateral line under a 2 hr exposure. B. coagulans XY2 exhibited a high in vitro antioxidant activity and against CuSO 4 -induced oxidative stress in zebrafish larvae by up-regulating sod1, gstp1 and cat gene transcriptional levels and relevant enzymatic activities. CuSO 4 stimulated the inflammation process resulting in obvious increases of gene il-1β and il-10 transcription, which were suppressed by B. coagulans XY2 intervention. Overall, our results underline the bio-function of B. coagulans XY2 on protecting zebrafish larvae from copper toxicity, suggesting the potential application values of probiotics in copper toxicity alleviation on human and the environment.

The recent advancement of nanocatalysis offers great promise for cancer therapy, and the development of efficient nanozymes for catalytic biological reactions is highly desirable, but still challenging. Herein, we report the synthesis of ultra-small FeO x nanozymes which is enabled by the introduction of Cu 2+ . The obtained nanozymes exhibit versatile catalytic activities integratively for effective cancer treatment. In particular, the as-synthesized nanozymes display pH-dependent peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity and approach the optimal performance at around pH = 4, endowing it with the possibility for the precise treatment of tumors with acidic microenvironment. Furthermore, the FeO x nanozyme possesses a promising glutathione (GSH) depleting capability and allows to reverse the abnormal GSH level in the tumor issues. Additionally, the fabricated nanozymes are able to catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) to O 2 , allowing to alleviate the hypoxic environment of the tumors and improving the function of immune system for the treatment of tumors. More importantly, the FeO x nanozymes showed remarkable stability and maintained the enzymatic activity after six months in storage. Collectively, the FeO x nanozyme was demonstrated as a promisingly effective nanomedicine for tumor treatment by 4T1 cells, providing insight into the rational design of efficient nanozymes for cancer treatment.
