BACKGROUND The excess use of glyphosate in both agricultural and nonagricultural areas has led to tremendous health (e.g. cardiac and respiratory impacts) and environmental concerns worldwide. There is an urgent need to find efficient ways to remove glyphosate residue from the aqueous environment. RESULTS Herein, an effective method for the removal of aqueous glyphosate is developed by employing nano-CuFe 2 O 4 modified biochar (BC) as an adsorbent. The CuFe 2 O 4 @BC adsorbents were prepared through hydrolyzing phragmite powders at 500 °C, followed by a simple coprecipitation method. The influence of initial glyphosate concentration, temperature, pH, time and coexisting species on the adsorption behavior of CuFe 2 O 4 @BC to glyphosate were fully examined. CONCLUSION It was found that the adsorption of glyphosate onto CuFe 2 O 4 @BC is highly dependent on the initial glyphosate concentration, pH and temperature, as well as coexisting species. The Freundlich and Langmuir models fitted the equilibrium isotherm data well, indicating the presence of both physisorption and chemisorption. In addition, the adsorption kinetic is well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, which indicated that chemical adsorption may dominate the adsorption process. The CuFe 2 O 4 @BC adsorption of glyphosate presented a maximum adsorption capacity of 269.4 mg g −1 within 240 min, under 600 mg L −1 of glyphosate solution at 298 K and pH 4; this performance exceeds all other biochar-derived adsorbents for the removal of aqueous glyphosate encountered in the open literature. Such a cost-effective, high-performance adsorbent shows a great potential for the removal of aqueous glyphosate in industry. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Copper ferrite (CFO) as an excellent spinel adsorption material can significantly reduce the concentration of As in water. This work explores a method to synthesize hydroxyl-rich copper ferrite (h-CFO) at a low cost and on a large scale via combining sintering method and hydrothermal treatment using CuO and Fe 2 O 3 as raw materials. This work has optimized the performance of h-CFO via adjusting atmosphere, temperature, holding time, and used it to removal As(V) in water. The results show that tetragonal CFO prepared at 800 °C for ten hours (h-CFO800-10 h-Air) has the best As(V) removal performance, h-CFO800-10 h-Air can reduced the concentration of As(V) from 10 mg L −1 to 4.77 μg L −1 in the acidic aqueous solution. Through XPS, BET, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy characterization, it can be known that the ability of h-CFO is related to its crystal form and the number of hydroxyls on its surface. The result of XPS and Raman spectroscopy also show that the As ion-containing in water will be interacted with the hydroxyls of the As ion-containing which has been adsorbed on h-CFO to form secondary adsorption.

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) demonstrate great micropollutant degradation efficiency. In this study, CuFe2O4was successfully used to activate peracetic acid (PAA) to remove Rhodamine B. Acetyl(per)oxyl radicals were the dominant species in this novel system. The addition of 2,4-hexadiene (2,4-HD) and Methanol (MeOH) significantly inhibited the degradation efficiency of Rhodamine B. The ≡Cu2+/≡Cu+redox cycle dominated PAA activation, thereby producing organic radicals (R-O˙) including CH3C(O)O˙ and CH3C(O)OO˙, which accounted for the degradation of Rhodamine B. Increasing either the concentration of CuFe2O4(0–100 mg/L) or PAA (10–100 mg/L) promoted the removal efficiency of this potent system. In addition, weakly acid to weakly alkali pH conditions (6–8) were suitable for pollutant removal. The addition of Humid acid (HA), HCO3−, and a small amount of Cl−(10–100 mmol·L−1) slightly inhibited the degradation of Rhodamine B. However, degradation was accelerated by the inclusion of high concentrations (200 mmol·L−1) of Cl−. After four iterations of catalyst recycling, the degradation efficiency remained stable and no additional functional group characteristic peaks were observed. Taking into consideration the reaction conditions, interfering substances, system stability, and pollutant-removal efficiency, the CuFe2O4/PAA system demonstrated great potential for the degradation of Rhodamine B.Keywords:peracetic acid (PAA);rhodamine B;copper ferrite (CuFe2O4);organic radicals (R-O˙)

The carcinogenic and hard-to-dispose Cr(VI) in high-salinity industrial wastewater has caused severe environmental problems. Herein, a novel hollow spherical CuFe 2 O 4 spinel oxide with concentrated confined oxygen vacancies (HS/CuFe 2 O 4 -OVs) was developed for Cr(VI) decontamination. Such a fancy material delivers a remarkable removal rate of 0.041 min −1 , approximately-one order of magnitude higher than the commonly reported iron-based materials. The OVs in the confined space could exert dual effects on Cr(VI) removal from the aspects of enhanced stabilization via local electronic structure regulation and strengthened immobilization via electron conductivity modulation. Importantly, due to the highly sensitive response of Cr(VI) to the changed confined OVs content, the HS/CuFe 2 O 4 -OVs showed higher selectivity for Cr(VI) removal in the interference of high concentration salts than its nonhollow-structured counterpart and can successfully treat Cr(VI)-contaminated industrial wastewater with high salinity. This work opens up a new concept for rational design of robust spatial confined architectures for Cr(VI) treatment.

CO 2 -splitting and thermochemical energy conversion effectiveness are still challenged by the selectivity of metal/metal oxide-based redox materials and associated chemical reaction constraints. This study proposed an interface/substrate engineering approach for improving CO 2 -splitting and thermochemical energy conversion through CuFe 2 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 two-layer coating SiC. The newly prepared material reactive surface area available for gas–solid reactions is characterized by micro-pores CuFe 2 O 4 alloy easing inter-layer oxygen micro mass exchanges across a highly stable SiC-Co 3 O 4 layer. Through a thermogravimetry analysis, oxidation of the thermally activated oxygen carriers exhibited remarkably CO 2 -splitting capacities with a total CO yield of 1919.33 µmol/g at 1300 °C. The further analysis of the material CO 2 -splitting performance at the reactor scale resulted in 919.04 mL (788.94 µmol/g) of CO yield with an instantaneous CO production rate of 22.52 mL/min and chemical energy density of 223.37 kJ/kg at 1000 °C isothermal redox cycles. The reaction kinetic behavior indicated activation energy of 30.65 kJ/mol, which suggested faster CO 2 activation and oxidation kinetic on SiC-Co 3 O 4 -CuFe 2 O 4 O-deficit surfaces. The underlying mechanism for the remarkable thermochemical performances was analyzed by combining experiment and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The significance of exploiting the synergy between CuFe 2 O 4 and Co 3 O 4 layers and stoichiometric reaction characteristics provided fundamental insights useful for the theoretical modeling and practical application of the solar thermochemical process.

In this paper, a superparamagnetic copper ferrite–graphene hybrid nanocomposite (CuFe2O4–G) was synthesized by a hydrothermal method and used as an efficient catalyst for the reduction of nitroarenes for the first time. The method has been applied to a broad range of compounds with different properties. The CuFe2O4–G catalyst can be readily recovered and reused for at least five consecutive cycles without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Recycling of photocatalyst in wastewater treatment is a big challenge. Fixation of photocatalyst on a flexible surface of solid substrates is a promising solution. In this work, copper ferrite (CuFe 2 O 4 ) particles were loaded onto polydopamine (pDA) pretreated ceramic/polyester fabrics (CPF) via coprecipitation . The CPF not only acts as loading material for CuFe 2 O 4 particles, but also makes this photocatalyst convenient to recycle. The morphology, elemental composition and structure of the as-fabricated CPF/CuFe 2 O 4 were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The degradation rate of methylene blue (MB) by the CPF/CuFe 2 O 4 photocatalyst reached to 98.2% under visible light irradiation for 80 min, reflecting the excellent photocatalytic activity of the composites. The CPF/CuFe 2 O 4 demonstrated good photostability and recoverability, indicating its great potential in wastewater treatment. Moreover, the degradation mechanism and possible degradation pathway of MB by CPF/CuFe 2 O 4 photocatalyst were investigated.

In order to enhance the catalytic activity of copper ferrite, CuFe 2 O 4 doped with Ce, Sn, and Sb were prepared by sol-gel combustion method, and for the first time applied as heterogeneous catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) degradation in aqueous solution. Morphology, elementary composition, crystal structure, and specific surface area of the obtained catalysts were characterized. The influences of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, initial pH, common inorganic anions, and natural organic matters (NOM) on pollutant removal were comprehensively investigated, as well as the degradation process in real wastewater. It was found that 90.1% of 15 mg/L TBBPA was removed at weak basic condition in the presence of 0.2 mM PMS and 0.075 g/L Sb-doped CuFe 2 O 4 , which exhibited the best catalytic activity among all the catalyst prepared. Furthermore, the active radical species responsible for TBBPA degradation were identified as sulfate radical and hydroxyl radical by using electron spin resonance (ESR) and scavenging tests. Possible catalysis mechanism was proposed based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, indicating that the surface hydroxyl groups and the interactions among surface metal species, oxygen species, and PMS were critical for maintaining high catalytic activity. Based on intermediate identification, TBBPA degradation pathway was proposed. According to all the results, the Sb-doped CuFe 2 O 4 with favorable catalytic ability, reusability and stability could be employed as a promising candidate for the activation of PMS to treat TBBPA-contaminated water.

Tetracycline (TC) pollution has attracted great attention due to its wide use, non-biodegradability and potential carcinogenicity. Bimetallic catalysts/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems have been considered as powerful technologies for TC degradation. Although the excellent catalytic activity of copper ferrite (CuFe 2 O 4 ) composite oxides for PMS has been already elucidated, the roles of increased Cu in the degradation especially from non-radical pathways are not clarified clearly. In this study, we prepared a series of CuO/CuFe 2 O 4 /Fe 2 O 3 (CCF) catalysts to confirm the key role of molar ratios of Cu: Fe (ranging from 1:2 to 2:1) in the enhanced TC degradation. The optimized CCF-3 catalyst with the Cu: Fe molar ratio of 2:1 showed the best degradation efficiency up to 95.5 % and the fastest apparent degradation rate of 0.1350 min −1 towards TC. In addition, the CCF-3/PMS system showed excellent adaptability and good stability in TC degradation. Importantly, a novel molecular-scale mechanism was proposed. Both radical ( S O 4 ∙ - , ∙OH, O 2 ∙ – ) and non-radical ( 1 O 2 , direct electron transfer) pathways were associated with the CCF-3/PMS catalytic system, where 1 O 2 played the dominant roles. The increased Cu significantly boosted the non-radical pathways via promoting the formation of oxygen vacancies (O v ) and its further conversion to 1 O 2 , and facilitating electron transfer between bimetallic Cu/Fe interface. This work provides a deep insight into the formation and reaction mechanisms of non-radical species for CCF/PMS systems, and a novel foundation for the design of CuFe 2 O 4 composite catalysts.

A magnetic copper ferrite and biochar composite (CuFe2O4@BC) catalyst was prepared by an improved sol-gel calcination method and initially used for the removal of antibiotics ciprofloxacin (CIP) by activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Using CuFe2O4@BC as the activator, 97.8% CIP removal efficiency could be achieved in 30 min. After a continuous degradation cycle, CuFe2O4@BC catalyst still exhibited great stability and repeatability and could also be quickly recovered by an external magnetic field. Meanwhile, the CuFe2O4@BC/PMS system presented good stability for metal ion leaching, which was far less than the leaching of metal ions in the CuFe2O4/PMS system. Moreover, the effects of various influencing factors, such as initial solution pH, activator loading, PMS dosage, reaction temperature, humic acid (HA), and the inorganic anions were explored. The quenching experiments and the electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) analysis manifested that hydroxyl radical (•OH), sulfate radical (SO4•−), superoxide radical (O2•−), and singlet oxygen (1O2) were generated in the CuFe2O4@BC/PMS system, while1O2and O2•−are mainly involved in the degradation process. The synergistic effect between CuFe2O4and BC enhanced the structural stability and electrical conductivity of the material, which promoted the bonding between the catalyst and PMS, resulting in the enhanced catalytic activity of CuFe2O4@BC. This indicates that CuFe2O4@BC activating PMS is a promising remediation technique for CIP-contaminated water. Keywords:magnetic copper ferrite;biochar;catalytic performance;ciprofloxacin;peroxymonosulfate

In this study, a magnetic copper ferrite/montmorillonite-k10 nanocomposite (CuFe2O4/MMT-k10) was successfully fabricated by a simple sol-gel combustion method and was characterised by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the Brunner–Emmett–Teller (BET) method, vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). For levofloxacin (LVF) degradation, CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 was utilized to activate persulfate (PS). Due to the relative high adsorption capacity of CuFe2O4/MMT-k10, the adsorption feature was considered an enhancement of LVF degradation. In addition, the response surface methodology (RSM) model was established with the parameters of pH, temperature, PS dosage, and CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 dosage as the independent variables to obtain the optimal response for LVF degradation. In cycle experiments, we identified the good stability and reusability of CuFe2O4/MMT-k10. We proposed a potential mechanism of CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 activating PS through free radical quenching tests and XPS analysis. These results reveal that CuFe2O4/MMT-k10 nanocomposite could activate the persulfate, which is an efficient technique for LVF degradation in water. Keywords:magnetic;copper ferrite;montmorillonite-k10;levofloxacin;persulfate;response surface methodology

In this study, the morphology, surface features, textural properties, size of particles and the catalytic efficiencies of synthesized CuFe 2 O 4 by three different methods including sol–gel (SG), coprecipitation (CP), and solvothermal (ST) were evaluated. Various analytical techniques including SEM , TEM, XRD , N 2 adsorption–desorption, EDS elemental mapping, FTIR , and XPS were employed for characteristics exploration. The characterization results showed that the synthesis method could influence the characteristics of spinal ferrite and ST-CuFe 2 O 4 catalyst exhibited larger specific surface area (65.2 m 2 /g) and micro-pore volume (0.4512 cm 3 /g) than the catalyst prepared by CP (30.6 m 2 /g and 0.1298 cm 3 /g) and SG (18.2 m 2 /g and 0.0521 cm 3 /g) methods, respectively. Further, the XRD and FTIR results validated the formation of a highly crystalline ferrite structure synthesized by the ST method. Consequently, the catalytic results revealed that ST-CuFe 2 O 4 catalyst exhibited excellent TCE removal (94.6%) in the persulfate (6 mM) (PS) process along with significant reusability. Moreover, scavenging test and EPR analysis validated the dominant role of SO 4 •− radicals for TCE removal in the PS/ST-CuFe 2 O 4 system. Lastly, the TCE removal performance of ST-CuFe 2 O 4 catalyst in real water matrix elucidated that PS/ST-CuFe 2 O 4 system has promising potential and can practically be applied for remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater in ISCO practice. The ferrite synthesized by the ST method exhibited excellent catalytic performance among the three methods underlining the importance of preparation means in determining the catalytic potential of ferrite.
