Under the abusive conditions, it is demonstrated that the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 and the safety of LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries are improved by doping and coating Al and Ti elements into the bulk structure and surface of LiCoO 2 . The trickle charge and the differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) results show that after coating Al and Ti oxides on the doped LiCoO 2 with 2000 ppm Al, the exothermic peak shifts to a higher temperature and the exotherm decreases, resulting in the increase of the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 . In addition, compared to the LiCoO 2 without Al doping, it is also indicated that the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 can be enhanced by doping Al, the exothermic peak of the LiCoO 2 with Al doping amount of 10000 ppm is up to 250 °C. Under the abusive testing conditions including thermal shock and overcharge, the safety evaluation results of pouch polymer LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries are in good agreement with the trickle charge and DSC results. These results reveal that the thermal stability of LiCoO 2 can be used as an indicator to evaluate the safety characteristics of LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries, and especially the introduction of Al and Ti into LiCoO 2 can effectively improve the safety of LiCoO 2 /graphite batteries under the abusive conditions.

Supported Cs-based catalysts are considered as potential candidates for methyl methacrylate (MMA) synthesis via one-step aldol condensation, but they suffer from low activity. In this paper, the acid–base properties of the Cs/SiO2 catalyst were modulated by loading different amounts of the Al element. The changes in structural and physicochemical properties following Al introduction were revealed by a series of characterizations. In-depth investigation of the catalytic mechanism through in situ DRIFT combined with DFT calculations unveiled the synergistic effects between the Al and Cs components on the promotion of catalytic performance. The results showed that the presence of Al species facilitated the formation of weak and medium acid and base sites, along with the dispersion of the active Cs component, leading to an improvement of MMA yield. Additionally, the kinetic studies indicated that the addition of Al efficiently reduced the activation energy in comparison to pristine Cs/SiO2.

The huge capacity loss during cycling is the main obstacle to the industrial application of nickel-rich cathode materials Li[Ni 1−x−y Co x Mn y ]O 2 (NCM, 1 − x − y ≥ 0.8). However, at the same nickel content, another nickel rich Li[Ni 1−x−y Co x Al y ]O 2 (NCA, 1 − x − y ≥ 0.8) materials possess a much better cyclic performance due to the more powerful bond of Al-O compared with the NCM. But NCA yields a lower capacity caused by inactive Al. In this study, using the spray pyrolysis method to fabricate the new quaternary nickel-rich cathode material LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1− x Al x O 2 (NCMA, 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.06) is proposed to enhance the cyclic performance of NCM and with a limited capacity decrease for the incomplete substitution of Mn. The materials exhibit the evidently improvements in the electrochemical performance, among which the LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.06 Al 0.04 O 2 materials present the most excellent performances where the capacity retentions are up to 83.8% (3.0–4.4 V, 25 °C) after 200 cycles and 88.0% at 55 °C after 100 cycles. The satisfying results can be attributed to the inhibition of oxygen release and cationic disorder after the Al introduced, which are strongly confirmed by the results of structure refinement and first principles calculation.

Chloride solid electrolytes (SEs) have attracted widespread attention due to their high room-temperature ionic conductivity and excellent cathode compatibility. However, the conventionally selected central metal elements (e.g., In, Y and Ta) are usually rare and heavy, inevitably causing the high cost and high density of the obtained chloride SEs. Here, by choosing abundant and light Mg and Al as central metal elements, we develop a cheap and low density Li 1.2 Mg 0.95 Al 0.3 Cl 4 SE for high active material ratio in all solid state cathode. Partial replacement of Mg 2+ by Al 3+ in the framework yields vacancies and lowers the non-lithium metal ions occupancy at Mg/Li co-occupied 16 d site, effectively relieving the blocking effects by Mg 2+ in the pristine spinel Li 2−2 x Mg 1+ x Cl 4 . Thus, a significantly improved room-temperature conductivity of 3.08 × 10 −4 S·cm −1 is achieved, two orders of magnitude higher than that of Li 1.2 Mg 1.4 Cl 4 . More attractively, its low density of only 1.98 g·cm −3 enables low SE mass ratio in cathodes (only 16 wt.%) with still effective electrolyte/cathode contact and lithium-ion conduction inside. When charged to potential of 4.30 V, the as-fabricated Li 1.2 Mg 0.95 Al 0.3 Cl 4 -based solid lithium battery with uncoated NCM523 cathode can be cycled for over 100 cycles with a capacity retention of 86.68% at room temperature.
