When aluminum alloy is present in a Cl−-rich environment, the surface oxide film is easily damaged, resulting in faster dissolution of the substrate. The application of graphene-modified anticorrosion coating can effectively prevent the occurrence of corrosion. In this study, to explore the corrosion resistance of graphene-modified anticorrosion coating on the surface of aluminum alloy, we prepared graphene-modified anticorrosion coating on the surface of aluminum alloy and investigated the corrosion resistance mechanism. Epoxy resin primer and polyurethane top coat were modified by predispersed reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and Raman spectrum were used to investigate the microstructure of graphene-modified anticorrosion coating, and it was found that the addition of rGO could effectively improve the porosity defect of epoxy resin primer. Electrochemical workstation was used to quickly characterize the corrosion resistance of graphene-modified anticorrosion coating, and the change of the electrochemical curve during soaking in 3.5% NaCl was investigated every 5 hours. It was found that the application of rGO to modify the anticorrosion coating could improve the corrosion resistance of the anticorrosion coating, and as the soaking time increased, the corrosion resistance of graphene-modified anticorrosion coating changed regularly. The study results indicated that when the content of rGO was 0.4%, the porosity of epoxy coating decreased from 1.54% to 0.33%, the porosity dropped by an order of magnitude, and the self-corrosion voltage was relatively positive (-0.72434 V). The self-corrosion current density was the lowest (), and at the low frequency, the impedance modulus was the highest (103). After the equivalent circuit fitting, the dispersion index was relatively high, the dispersion effect was relatively weak, and the corrosion resistance of the coating was improved. For graphene-modified anticorrosion coating, in the early stage of corrosion protection, the existence of pores and other defects in the coating might increase the dispersion effect, resulting in greatly decreased corrosion resistance of the coating. In the middle stage of corrosion protection, the pores in the coating would be completely filled by corrosive ions, resulting in a weakened dispersion effect. Therefore, the decrease in the corrosion resistance of the coating was slowed down and became stable.

Although aluminum alloys are widely used in various industries, their wear and corrosion resistance are still needed to be enhanced. In this study, a robust anti-corrosion composite coating was prepared on the surface of Al alloy based on multiple reinforcement strategies. The composite coating is consisted of horizontally arranged and functionally modified h-BN nanosheets doped SiO 2 coating (SiO 2 -hBN(NH 3 + ) coating) and corrosion inhibitor MBT loaded porous anodic alumina (PAA-MBT) film. Results show that the composite coating prepared in this work has excellent corrosion resistance due to the effect of the extended penetration path of corrosive medium by h-BN(NH 3 + ) nanosheets, the full-thickness hydrophobicity of the SiO 2 coating, the corrosion inhibition of the MBT released from the PAA film and the physical barrier of the entire coating system. In addition, the composite coating also exhibits good mechanical properties including high hardness, high bonding strength and superior wear resistance. This work provides a novel design of protective coating with excellent anti-corrosion resistance and mechanical properties, which has a promising prospect in the development of superior long-term anti-corrosion coatings for aluminum alloy.

Graphene-modified anticorrosion coatings have become a hot spot in the field of metal protection due to the large-scale promotion of aluminum alloys, which are prone to corrosion in marine and atmospheric environments. The protection of aluminum alloy surfaces by a graphene-modified anticorrosive coating was explored in this study by applying a graphene-modified anticorrosive coating to an aluminum alloy surface to test its resistance to corrosion. Dispersion-treated reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was used to modify the epoxy resin and fluorocarbon resin. It was found, by using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the microstructure of the coating made by the Raman Spectroscopy Institute, that the addition of rGO could effectively improve the porosity of the epoxy primer, and the electrochemical workstation was able to resist the graphene-modified anticorrosive coating. The corrosion performance was quickly characterized, the polarization curve and the AC impedance curve were fitted, and it was found that the self-corrosion current density () of the graphene-modified anticorrosive coating was the smallest () when 0.6% of rGO was added; the impedance modulus () was the largest (104), the capacitive reactance arc radius was the largest, and the coating resistance was the largest after fitting (15517 Ω). When 0.8% of rGO was added, the dispersion coefficient was large, and it had a good physical insulation performance. The main reason for the reduction of the corrosion resistance was that the agglomeration of rGO made the aluminum alloy matrix and the external corrosive environment form a highly conductive circuit, thereby accelerating the corrosion of the aluminum alloy matrix.

This study investigates the tribological behavior of aluminum alloy and micro-arc oxidation (MAO)-treated aluminum alloy under different environmental conditions using a combination of experimental friction tests and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The MAO process was applied to the aluminum alloy to form a protective alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) coating, revealed that MAO treatment significantly reduces the friction coefficient and wear rate of the aluminum alloy across dry, water, and NaCl solution environments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that MAO-treated samples exhibited improved wear resistance compared to untreated samples, with reduced wear depths and widths in all tested media. MD simulations further elucidated the friction-reducing mechanisms, showing that the alumina layer on MAO-treated surfaces reduces interface temperatures by mitigating frictional heat generation and enhancing lubrication effects in aqueous solutions. These findings underscore the potential of MAO as a viable surface treatment technique for enhancing the durability and performance stability of aluminum alloy components in various industrial applications.

Structural defects such as micro-pores and cracks generated during the micro-arc oxidation process can greatly reduce the corrosion resistance of the coating. This work proposed a method to improve the anti-corrosion property of the micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating by layer-by-layer (LBL) assembling a polyurea layer on the surface of it. Organic silane (KH) and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) were self-assembled alternately on the MAO coating surface and formed a polyurea layer. The assembled layers were investigated using XPS , FTIR, EDS-SEM, EIS and polarization curves measurements. Three organic layers obtained couldn't be seen from SEM morphology. Whereas the XPS results showed the existence of polyurea layers with the disappearance of Al 2p signals and appearance of N 1s signals. The MAO coating surface was hydrophilic, and the contact angles of samples with odd-numbered layer (KH550 surface) were up to 95°, while the samples with even-numbered layer (IPDI surface) were about 87°, meaning that the silane and IPDI were successfully assembled on the MAO surface, improving the hydrophobicity of coating. The KH550/IPDI coating exhibited remarkably corrosion protection , and the corrosion resistance of the coating was maintained above 10 9 Ω·cm 2 after exposure in NaCl solution for 288 h. In addition, the self-corrosion current density was under 1.46 × 10 −9 mA·cm −2 after 288 h immersion, indicating that the KH550/IPDI coating would keep the anti-corrosion ability for longer time.

An active corrosion protection coating was developed based on mesoporous SiO 2 nanoparticles simultaneously incorporated with benzotriazole and 2-mercaptobenzothiazole inhibitors (BTA+MBT@mSiO 2 NPs). The enhanced inhibition effect between BTA and MBT mixtures against the corrosion of aluminum alloy (AA2024-T3) was assessed through a visual-identification based high-throughput screening method and EIS measurement. DFT and MD simulation revealed that the hydrogen bond interaction between BTA and MBT promoted their co-adsorption on the alloy surface. An epoxy coating containing 2 wt% BTA+MBT@mSiO 2 NPs exhibited enhanced active corrosion protection of AA2024-T3 in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. XPS results confirmed the adsorption of binary inhibitors to suppress corrosion.

This study focused on bonding strength improvement between aluminum alloy and carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite. Laser engraving method was used to create grooves on surface of aluminum substrate, and resin pre-coating (RPC) was used to disperse high-viscosity resin into resin pre-coating solution to be introduced into pre-fabricated structure, which contributed to reducing bonding defects and constructing short aramid fiber/epoxy (SAFE) bonding layer after full evaporation of acetone to improve mechanical interlocking. The results showed bonding strength of composite with engraving space of 0.2 mm and RPC with short aramid fibers was 20.32 MPa, 220.4 % higher than the base. The failure mode was changed from debonding failure on aluminum surface to delamination failure of CFRP. The research confirmed laser engraving and RPC as simple and effective combined methods on improving bonding strength of aluminum-CFRP composites, which could provide a reference for other metal to manufacture high-performance hybrid composites.
