Polyaluminum chloride modified clay (PAC-MC) is a safe and efficient red tide control agent that has been studied and applied worldwide. Although it is well known that the distribution of hydrolytic aluminum species in PAC affects its flocculation , little is known about the influence of particulars aluminum species on the microalgae removal efficiency of PAC-MC; this lack of knowledge creates a bottleneck in the development of more efficient MCs based on aluminum salts. The ferron method was used in this study to quantitatively analyze the distributions of and variations in different hydrolytic aluminum species during the process of microalgae removal by PAC-MC. The results showed that Al a , which made up 5%–20% of the total aluminum, and Al p , which made up 15%–55% of the total aluminum, significantly affected microalgae removal, with Pearson's correlation coefficients of 0.83 and 0.89, respectively. Most of the aluminum in the PAC-MC sank rapidly into the sediments, but the rate and velocity of settlement were affected by the dose of modified clay. The optimal dose of PAC-MC for precipitating microalgae was determined based on its aluminum profile. These results provide guidance for the precise application of PAC-MC in the control of harmful algal blooms .

The morphologies and the electron property of catalysts play the very important roles in the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) such as dibenzyltoluene (DBT). The different morphologies and pore structures of γ-Al 2 O 3 and Mo x C doped γ-Al 2 O 3 were synthesized as the supports for Pt catalysts. After analyzing of various characterizations and catalytic testing, it was found that the large surface area and the mesoporous structure of catalysts are beneficial to both DBT hydrogenation and perhydro-dibenzyltoluene (H18-DBT) dehydrogenation. The doping of Mo x C promoted the formation of the smaller Pt nanoparticles and increased Pt dispersion. The forming Pt–Mo structure is beneficial to hydrogen spillover which suppress the formation of by-product. The high Pt dispersion of 0.1 wt% Mo x C doped Pt/Al 2 O 3 catalyst plays the positive roles in increasing H18-DBT dehydrogenation activity.

Various combined processes with pre-coagulation have been developed for biologically treated landfill leachate , but the microscopic-level processes occurring during coagulation remain largely unknown. Herein, dissolved organic matter (DOM) fate using fluorescence excitation emission matrix spectroscopy combined with parallel factor analysis and electrospray ionization coupled Fourier transform-ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry and concomitant heavy metal (HM) behaviors were explored at the molecular level. In addition, AlCl 3 and two polyaluminum chloride (PACl) species (dominated by [AlO 4 Al 12 (OH) 24 (H 2 O) 12 ] 7+ and [(AlO 4 ) 2 Al 28 (OH) 56 (H 2 O) 26 ] 18+ , respectively) were used. The results show that all coagulants are efficient at removing DOM. PACl was found to be advantageous over AlCl 3 in overcoming pH fluctuation, which is ascribed to the different dominant mechanisms, namely, entrapment and sweep flocculation for AlCl 3 and charge neutralization for PACl. Consequently, PACl was more effective at removing humic substances , usually high-molecular-weight, oxygen-rich and unsaturated, than protein substances. For HM removal, PACl was likewise better and more stable, where As, Cu, Ni, Co and Hg were removed predominantly via adsorption, and Cr, Zn, Pb, Cd and Mn were removed via coprecipitation . Correlation analysis showed that humic substances tended to complex with HMs and be removed synergistically due to the ubiquitous occurrences of aromatic structures and oxygen-containing functional groups.
