The combustion agglomeration of aluminum (Al) and the long heat and mass transfer distance between Al and oxidizer cause serious two-phase flow loss and slag accumulation in the engine of solid propellants. Here, we present an effective strategy by in-situ encapsulating graded nano-aluminum (nAl) and micron-aluminum (μAl) in ammonium perchlorate (AP) simultaneously by using hydroxymethyl cellulose (HMC) as adhesive and constructing a compact coupling fuel oxidizer complex high-energy microsphere (μAl/nAl@AP/HMC) to enhance the energy release efficiency and combustion efficiency. Compared with physical mixture (PM), the ignition delay time and combustion time of μAl/nAl@AP/HMC microspheres are reduced by 69.58 % and 69.87 %, owing to the decomposition process control of AP through the adsorption and spatial constraint effect on the interface between metal fuels and oxidizer. Furthermore, the nAl embedded in the AP surface forms a hot spot around the μAl to promote the combustion reaction, thereby shortening the cavitation threshold and tensile limit time of μAl and accelerating the occurrence of microexplosion. Microexplosion effect in μAl/nAl@AP/HMC microsphere significantly weakens combustion agglomeration and improves combustion efficiency and energy release efficiency by sharp shrinkage of combustion condensation products, which addresses the challenges on energy output and combustion efficiency in high-density solid propellants.

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is an important oxidant of solid propellant, and its decomposition is of great significance for improving combustion properties of solid propellants. However, it is difficult to balance AP-catalytic effect, ignition and energy level. In this study, lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF 6 ), ferric chloride (FeCl 3 ) and 1,2,4-triazole were self-assembled on aluminum particles via ionic bonding and metallic coordination. It highly catalyzed the thermal decomposition of AP, which reduced the decomposition temperature of AP by 29.4 °C. The thermal oxidation reactivity of coated-aluminum was much higher than that of raw aluminum powder, and its exothermic enthalpy was 3.45 times that of raw aluminum. The combustion heat was also improved. After ignition delay of 0.2 s, Al/CM-4 was burnt violently at 740 °C, while raw Al could not be ignited even at 950 °C. Our work provides an effective strategy for high-performance self-assembly coating on Al fuels, which addressed big significance in AP-containing propellants and explosives. Besides, such organic/inorganic composite self-assembly system may also be instructive for future design of heterogeneous surface, multifunctional coating, protective interface, and etc.

Aluminum (Al) can significantly improve the energy density and specific impulse (I sp ) of solid rocket propellants as the primary metal fuel, but its incomplete combustion results in an undesirable energy release performance. The strategy of fuel/oxidizer interfacial control has been proved to effectively enhance the reaction efficiency of Al-based composites and thus improving the combustion properties of solid propellants. Ammonium perchlorate (AP) is commonly used as a high-energy oxidizer in solid propellant, and its thermal decomposition behavior directly affects the combustion characteristics of propellants. The addition of combustion catalysts can decrease thermal decomposition temperature and increase thermal reactivity of AP. As an emerging catalytic material, MoO 3-x quantum dots (QDs) with oxygen vacancies possess a high specific surface and strong charge adsorption capacity, which renders it a great potential for catalyzing AP. In this study, MoO 3-x QDs were introduced as catalyst and compared with traditional nano-metal oxides (M x O y ), the spherical Al@AP/M x O y composites with polydopamine as interfacial layer were prepared by spray drying method. The particle morphology, thermal decomposition kinetics and ignition properties of Al@AP/M x O y were investigated. The phase composition, morphology and particle size distribution for the condensed combustion products of composites were further analyzed. The decreased particle size and less unreacted Al content in CCPs indicated the increase of combustion efficiency between Al and AP. In particular, Al@AP/MoO 3-x has the higher heat of reaction, lower thermal decomposition temperature and small CCPs particle size distribution, which collectively suggested that the MoO 3-x is capable to improve the thermal reactivity of Al@AP composites with a higher combustion efficiency.

Surface modification is frequently used to solve the problems of low combustion properties and agglomeration for aluminum-based fuels. However, due to the intrinsic incompatibility between the aluminum powder and the organic modifiers, the surface coating is usually uneven and disordered, which significantly deteriorates the uniformity and performances of the Al-based fuels. Herein, a new approach of monolayer nano-vesicular self-assembly is proposed to prepare high-performance Al fuels. Triblock copolymer G-F-G is produced by glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) and 2,2′-(2,2,3,3,4,5,5-Octafluorohexane-1,6-diyl) bis (oxirane) (fluoride) ring-open addition reaction. By utilizing G-F-G vesicular self-assembly in a special solvent, the nano-sized vesicles are firmly adhered to the surface of Al powder through the long-range attraction between the fluorine segments and Al. Meanwhile, the electrostatic repulsion between vesicles ensures an extremely thin coating thickness (≈15 nm), maintaining the monolayer coating structure. Nice ignition, combustion, anti-agglomeration, and water-proof properties of Al@G-F-G(DMF) are achieved, which are superior among the existing Al-based fuels. The derived Al-based fuel has excellent comprehensive properties, which can not only inspire the development of new-generation energetic materials but also provide facile but exquisite strategies for exquisite surface nanostructure construction via ordered self-assembly for many other applications.

Aluminum (Al) particles are good fuel additives to improve the energy output performances of explosives. Under detonation environment, reaction delay of Al particles plays a key role in the energy release efficiency. Up to date, reaction delay of Al particles is still limited by the efficiency of mass and heat transfer from oxidizers to Al particles. To address this issue, a homogeneous fuel-oxidizer assembly has recently become a promising strategy. In this work, oxidizer-activated Al fuel particles (ALG) were prepared with glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) as the oxidizer. The ALG was in uniform spherical shape and core-shell structure with shell layer of around 5 nm which was observed by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. The localized nanoscale mid-IR measurement detected the uniform distribution of characteristic absorption bond of GAP in the shell layer which confirmed the homogenous fuel-oxidizer structure of ALG. A thermal gravimetric analysis of ALG at ultrafast heating rate of 1000 °C/min under argon atmosphere was conducted. The decomposition of GAP finished much earlier than that of GAP at heating rate of 10 °C/min. Under ultrafast high laser fluence, the reaction response of ALG was characterized and compared with that of micro-sized Al (μAl). With the increase of laser energy, the propagation distance of the shock wave increased. However, the velocity histories were nearly the same when energies were lower than 299 mJ or higher than 706 mJ. The propagation distance of the shock wave for ALG was 0.5 mm larger than that for μAl at 2.1 μs. The underwater explosion showed the peak pressure and the shock wave energy of the ALG-based explosive were both higher than those of the μAl-based explosive at 2.5 m. This study shows the feasibility to improve the energy release of Al-based explosives via using the oxidizer-activated Al fuel particles with energetic polymer as the oxidizer.
