Aluminum Corrosion Chemistry in High-Voltage Lithium Metal Batteries with LiFSI-Based Ether Electrolytes

Yawei Chen,Fanyang Huang,Miao Xie,Yehu Han,Wanxia Li,Yulin Jie,Xingbao Zhu,Tao Cheng,Ruiguo Cao,Shuhong Jiao

High-voltage Li metal batteries (LMBs) based on ether electrolytes hold potential for achieving high energy densities exceeding 500 Wh kg–1, but face challenges with electrolyte oxidative stability, particularly concerning aluminum (Al) current collector corrosion. However, the specific chemistry behind Al corrosion and its effect on electrolyte components remains unexplored. Here, our study delves into Al corrosion in the representative LiFSI-DME electrolyte system, revealing that low-concentration electrolytes exacerbate Al current collector corrosion and solvent decomposition. In contrast, high-concentration electrolytes mitigate these issues, enhancing long-term stability. Remarkably, LiFSI-0.7DME electrolyte demonstrates exceptional stability with up to 1000 cycles at high voltage without significant capacity decay. These findings offer crucial insights into Al corrosion mechanisms in ether-based electrolytes, advancing our comprehension of high-voltage LMBs and facilitating their development for practical applications.

Achieving the Inhibition of Aluminum Corrosion by Dual-Salt Electrolytes for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Longqing Huang,Qian Qiu,Ming Yang,Haoxiang Li,Jialing Zhu,Wenjun Zhang,Shuai Wang,Lan Xia,Peter Müller-Buschbaum

Sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI) electrolytes are renowned for their superior physicochemical and electrochemical properties, making them ideal for high-performance sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, severe oxidative dissolution of aluminum current collectors (commonly known as Al corrosion) in NaFSI-based electrolytes occurs at high potentials. To address this challenge, aiming to understand the Al corrosion mechanism and develop strategies to inhibit corrosion, we propose dual-salt electrolytes using 0.8 mol L–1 (M) NaFSI and 0.2 M of a second fluorine-containing sodium salt dissolved in EC/PC solutions (1:1, v/v) to construct an insoluble deposits layer on the Al. Dual-salt electrolytes adopting a second sodium salt capable of passivating the Al collector have been extensively investigated through various techniques, such as cyclic voltammetry, scanning electron microscopy, chronoamperometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and charge–discharge tests. Our findings demonstrate that introducing sodium difluoro(oxalato)borate (NaDFOB) into the NaFSI electrolytes inhibits Al corrosion, which is attributed to the formation of insoluble deposits of Al–F (AlF3) and B–F containing polymers. Moreover, the capacity retention of Na||Na3V2(PO4)3 (NVP) cells using the NaFSI-NaDFOB dual-salt electrolyte reaches 99.2% along with a Coulombic efficiency over 99.3% at a 1 C rate after 200 cycles. This research provides a practical solution for passivating Al collectors in SIBs with NaFSI electrolytes and promotes the development of sodium batteries with long calendar lifetimes.

Corrosion behaviour of AlN ceramics in LiF-LiCl-LiBr-Li molten salt at 500 °C

Jian Zhang,Jin Huang,Ruxia Liu,Guoqiang Luo,Qiang Shen

Immersion tests of AlN in LiF-LiCl-LiBr-Li salt have been performed at 500 °C to study the corrosion behaviour of AlN. The results show that AlN initially corroded at a higher rate (2⋅10 −5 mg/(mm 2 ⋅h)) during 0−50 h than during 50−300 h (6⋅10 -6 mg/(mm 2 ⋅h)) because the formation of an alumina corrosion layer protected the AlN from further corrosion. The addition of metallic Li at low concentrations (<0.1 wt. %) to the molten salt inhibited the corrosion of AlN by preferentially depleting oxygen impurities, while Li at high concentrations (>0.1 wt. %) accelerated corrosion by reacting with YAG in AlN.

Inhibition Mechanism of Corrosion of Aluminium Alloy in Ordinary Portland Cement Paste by Polyaluminium Sulphate

Haining Geng,Qi Wei,Haosen Ma,Qiu Li

The expansion, cracking and deterioration of properties during utilisation and solidification of municipal solid waste incineration bottom ash are key problems that are caused by the reaction of metallic aluminium in the bottom ash in the highly alkaline environment of hardened Portland cement. In this study, polyaluminium sulphate (PAS) was introduced into ordinary Portland cement (OPC) to inhibit the corrosion of aluminium alloy. The results indicate that PAS successfully inhibited the corrosion of Al in hardened OPC paste, prevented the expansion and cracking, reduced the amount of hydrogen gas release and formed a thinner and dense corrosion layer on the Al plate surface. The mechanism of corrosion inhibition of Al by PAS was the increase of initial Al(OH)4−concentration by hydrolysis, which expanded the pH range of passivation and transformed the porous loose bayerite layer to a dense homogeneous one around the Al plate without modification of the corrosion product (bayerite). The corrosion rate of the Al alloy in hardened OPC paste was reduced by 213 times by the addition of PAS, from 288.30 mm a−1without PAS addition to 1.35 mm a−1with PAS addition. This study casts light on the effective inhibition of corrosion of the Al alloy in OPC.

Disassociating Lithium Salts in Deep Eutectic Solvents and Inhibiting Aluminum Corrosion for Low-Temperature Lithium–Metal Batteries

Jinxiu Chen,Fangfang Wang,Xiaozhong Fan,Jinhao Zhang,Yusheng Zhao,Wei Xia,Yibo Yan,Yingze Song,Fengchao Rao,Long Kong

Low-temperature lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries necessitate high-disassociation Li salts in low melting point solvents to favor transport kinetics. While lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) is being developed for low-temperature electrolytes due to its weakly coordinated anion that enables a high dissociation constant, the deep eutectic solvents (DESs) benefit electrolyte mobility. Such salt and solvent combination is expected to address challenges of freezing electrolytes, low charge carriers, and sluggish ion transport across interfaces encountered under subzero temperature conditions. However, LiFSI corrodes the aluminum (Al) foil and disconnects electron pathways between the active material and the Al current collector, endangering battery stability at high voltages. Herein, the strongly coordinated anion (nitride, NO3–) is introduced into the DESs by high-dielectric-constant dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to inhibit Al corrosion. The Al anodic voltage in Li||Al cells is extended to 4.6 V (vs Li+/Li). This rational-designed electrolyte enables the cell with an impressive low-temperature performance even at a high areal loading of 4.5 mAh cm–2. The cell equipped with this electrolyte can be cycled over 200 cycles at −20 °C with inconspicuous capacity degradation. This work adopts disassociating Li salts in DESs and inhibiting Al corrosion, which is expected to enrich the fundamentals of mediating Li+ transport and Al corrosion to promote low-temperature Li-metal battery performances.

Corrosion Suppression of Aluminum Metal by Optimizing Lithium Salt Concentration in Solid-State Imide Salt-Based Polymer Plastic Crystal Electrolyte Membrane

Yumei Zhou,Jianchen Hu,Peixin He,Yuhong Zhang,Jingjing Xu,Xiaodong Wu

Imide salt–polymer plastic crystal electrolytes (PPCEs) have been demonstrated to be very promising solid-state electrolytes for ambient lithium ion batteries (LIBs). However, anodic Al dissolution at high voltage, due to these salts, cannot form an AlF3/LiF passivation film (like LiPF6) on an Al surface, which limits their application in high-voltage solid-state LIBs. In this work two ambient workable PPCEs with different lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) concentrations are designed to investigate anodic Al dissolution suppression in solid-state imide salt-based electrolytes. The anodic Al dissolution is examined by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The electrochemical performance is evaluated by solid-state LiCoO2/PPCE/Li4Ti5O12 cells. The results demonstrate that anodic Al dissolution is efficiently suppressed and the cell electrochemical performance is greatly elevated by optimizing LiTFSI concentration in PPCEs. The suppression mechanism of Al corrosion in concentrated PPCE is analyzed and suggested.

A smart-sensing coating based on dual-emission fluorescent Zr-MOF composite for autonomous warning of coating damage and aluminum corrosion

Dehong Fan,Xiaobang Liu,Kai Qi,Zhenyu Chen,Yubing Qiu,Bokai Liao,Xingpeng Guo

A smart-sensing coating is developed by adding a dual-emission fluorescent zirconium metal-organic framework/rhodamine B composite (Zr-MOF@RhB) into the commercial epoxy resin coating, which can autonomously detect and distinguish the damage of surface coating and the corrosion of substrate aluminum . The orange-yellow fluorescence can be observed to identify the area of mild coating damage without metal corrosion, resulting from the cumulative release of Zr-MOF@RhB with the emission wavelength of 583 nm. In case of the occurrence of aluminum corrosion, the fluorescence color turns from orange-yellow to green, in which the emission behavior of Zr-MOF@RhB at 490 nm is greatly enhanced with the presence of Al 3+ ions. The smart-sensing ability can availably and robustly operate in the conditions of long term, wide ranges of pH and temperature, and diverse interfering substances. This simple and powerful warning system relying on fluorescent MOFs would not only extend the practical applications of MOFs but also be a promising candidate for smart coating strategies.

Revealing the atomic-scale mechanism of organic corrosion inhibitors in suppressing anodic dissolution of metals via ab initio molecular dynamics and metadynamics simulations: A case study of sorbitol on aluminum

Xin Guo,Lingwei Ma,Xiaoqi Wang,Bingxiao Shi,Zhongheng Fu,Di Liu,Jiuzhou Zhao,Lin Lu,Dawei Zhang

Computational simulation methods have become a popular approach to study the adsorption behavior of corrosion inhibitor molecules on metal surfaces. In this work, using sorbitol as a model corrosion inhibitor, we investigate the differences in anodic dissolution kinetics of aluminum before and after the adsorption of organic corrosion inhibitor molecules combining ab initio molecular dynamics with metadynamics. The results indicate that the adsorption of inhibitor molecules restricts the migration of Al ions during the initial dissolution process, hindering their hydration and consequently slowing down the initial dissolution kinetics. Our work provides a new perspective for the computational study of corrosion inhibition mechanisms.

High-value utilization of invasive plant-Alternanthera philoxeroides extract in corrosion inhibition of aluminum

Dandan Shao,Gaofei Wei,Fu Zhang,Shuduan Deng,Xianghong Li

Aluminum plays important roles in infrastructure construction, aerospace, transportation, and industries for its excellent performance. Hence, exploring green aluminum corrosion inhibitors with high efficiency is becoming a research hot spot. In this study, the invasive weed of Alternanthera philoxeroides which seriously threatens the ecological environment was designed as a precursor to prepare Alternanthera philoxeroides extract (APE) as a plant corrosion inhibitor via ultrasonic extraction . The weight loss method and electrochemical measurement were used to study the inhibition effect of APE on aluminum in hydrochloric acid . The results showed that the maximum inhibition efficiency of APE is up to 96 % in 1.0 M HCl solution at 20 °C. Besides, it further proved that the physical and chemical adsorption worked simultaneously, and the APE acted as a mix-type inhibitor to improve good inhibition efficiency to the Al via the geometric coverage effect. A series of characterization and theoretical analyses confirmed that APE molecules exhibit high inhibiting efficiency to aluminum corrosion in HCl solution by laying horizontally and forming an adsorption film on the surface of the aluminum. The outcomes of this study may offer valuable insights into the treatment of invasive plants for their high-value utilization.

N,N-dimethyl fluorosulfonamide for suppressed aluminum corrosion in lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide-based electrolytes

Wu Hao,Song Ziyu,Wang Xingxing,Feng Wenfang,Zhou Zhibin,Zhang Heng

Effective passivation of aluminum (Al) current collector at high potentials (> 4.0 V vs. Li/Li + ) is of essence for the long-term operation of lithium-based batteries. Unfortunately, the non-aqueous liquid electrolytes comprising lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and organic carbonates are corrosive toward Al current collector at high potentials (> 4.0 V vs. Li/Li + ), despite their intriguing features (e.g., good chemical stability and high ionic conductivity). Herein, we propose the utilization of N,N-dimethyl fluorosulfonamide (DMFSA) as electrolyte solvent for suppressing Al corrosion in the LiTFSI-based electrolytes. It has been demonstrated that the electrolyte of 1.0 M LiTFSI-DMFSA shows decent ionic conductivities (1.76 mS·cm −1 at 25 °C) with good fluidities (2.44 cP at 25 °C). In particular, the replacement of organic carbonates (e.g., ethylene carbonate and ethyl methyl carbonate) with DMFSA leads to significant suppressed Al corrosion. Morphological and compositional characterizations utilizing scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) reveal that DMFSA favors the formation of insoluble species (i.e., aluminum fluoride (AlF 3 )) on the surface of Al electrode, which effectively inhibits continuous exposure of fresh Al surface to electrolyte during cycling. This work provides not only a deeper understanding on the Al corrosion in LiTFSI-based electrolyte but also an elegant path to stabilize the Al current collector at high potentials (> 4.0 V vs. Li/Li + ), which may give an impetus into the development of lithium-based batteries.
