Challenges, such as limited active sites and undesirable cyclic stability, still hinder the practical applications of Ni-Co phosphides (NCP) based electrode materials. To solve those issues, Al-induced NCP nanosheets (NCAP) decorated on nickel foam were successfully fabricated and applied as a high-performance binder-free electrode material for alkaline supercapacitors . The transformation of NCAP during the reaction with alkaline electrolyte was also investigated. NCAP has a series of irreversible changes with the enhancement of the capacitive performance during the initial reaction with KOH to the final form of the Al-induced Ni-Co phosphides@layered double hydroxides (NCAP@LDHs) with the stable composite nanostructure . Moreover, the Density Functional Theory analysis results show that Al not only adjusts the density of states and ions migration barrier of the newly formed LDHs but also enhances the synergetic behavior between the LDHs and NCAP overall conductivity of the composites. So, a higher capacity of 1138.7 C/g was achieved in the NCAP@LDHs system compared with 643.5 C/g of NCP. The as-assembled hybrid supercapacitor (HSC) with satisfactory specific energy and specific power could light 160 LEDs and a hygrometer successfully, which suggests the potential to be applied in the energy storage field.

According to the design concept of hollow metallic microlattices, the quality of the coating has a considerable influence on the performance of the material. To avoid the effect of by-products in the coatings, we have chosen the Al-induced electroless plating method to respond to the composition design of this material. In this paper, the coatings formation process of Al-induced electroless plating on the metallic surface is systematically investigated. The coatings created by Al-induced electroless plating were characterized by surface morphology, XRD patterns, and electrochemical potential. Subsequently, the deposition process of elements on the metallic substrate was simulated by molecular dynamics. Finally, the surface morphology changes of coatings were observed at different plating times to verify the simulation results. The results indicate that the four kinds of coatings are each composed of a single metal element (copper, cobalt, nickel, and iron) with no by-products. Based on the results of morphology changes of the coatings and the deposition simulation, the overall formation process of Al-induced electroless plating is described. The deposition of coatings has the characteristics of preferential growth and aggregate growth. The metal atoms that are generated from the reaction of the reducing electrons with the target metallic ions in the solutions are deposited on the substrate surface as the primary cores. The reducing electrons are provided by the dissolution of Al foil. With the increase in the number of generated metal atoms, multiple atomic clusters form in the areas of the primary cores. These clusters develop at various scales on the substrate surface, forming irregular particles. Eventually, coatings are formed completely with uniform particle sizes.

The LiCoO2 cathode cannot maintain stable battery cycling under high voltage, as the undesired release of lattice O and harmful surface side reactions compromise its structural stability, resulting in battery capacity degradation. Herein, inspired by architectural engineering, we proposed a surface–bulk structure dual-reinforced strategy to tackle the aforementioned challenges by room-temperature Al-induced engineering, which could achieve surface disordering and phosphating and bulk gradient Ni doping of the LiCoO2 cathode. Such a multifunctional structure could delay the detrimental transition, restrain lattice O loss, reduce harmful surface side reactions, and form a phosphate-rich CEI with high ionic conductivity and stability. The as-prepared modified LiCoO2 as the cathode in lithium-ion batteries displayed remarkably enhanced cycle stability than bare LiCoO2 (91.9% vs 45.3% after 100 cycles in 3.0–4.6 V at a current density of 1 C). Even at a 5 C high rate, the modified LiCoO2 cathode also displayed superb battery cycling (92% after 100 cycles at 3.0–4.6 V). This room-temperature Al-induced engineering is universal to other layered cathode materials.

Background Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative and remains incurable. Aluminum is a potent neurotoxin associated with AD. The main pathological features of AD are extracellular amyloid-β protein deposition and intracellular hyperphosphorylated Tau protein. A body of evidence suggest that oxidative stress and autophagy are involved in the pathogenesis of AD. Andrographis paniculata (AP) is a native plant with anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative stress, and regulation of autophagy properties. AP significantly alleviated cognitive impairments, reduced Aβ deposition and has neuroprotective effect. However, its effects on aluminum-induced AD model have not been studied much. In this study, we investigated whether AP protect against aluminum-induced neurotoxicity through regulation of p62-Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1(Keap1)-Nuclear factor E2 related factor 2 (Nrf2) pathway and activation autophagy in vivo and in vitro. Methods UPLC-ESI-qTOF-MS/MS was used to identify the chemical constituents of AP ethanol extract. The mice with cognitive deficit were established by injecting aluminum chloride and D-galactose, and treated with either AP extract (200, 400, or 600 mg/kg/d) or andrographolide (2 mg/kg/2d).The spatial memory ability was detected by Morris water maze, HE staining were used to detect in brain tissue,Oxidative stress indexs and SOD activity in both serum and brain tissue were detected by kit.The expression of p62-Nrf2 pathway proteins were measured via western blotting. Furthermore, the neurotoxicity model was induced by aluminum maltolate (700 µM) in PC12 cells. Following AP and andrographolide treatment, the cell viability was detected. The relevant mRNA and protein expressions were detected in cells transfected with the p62 siRNA.Results The main active components of AP included andrographolide, neoandrographolide and deoxyandrographolide as identified. AP and andrographolide significantly improved the spatial memory ability of mice, attenuated pathological changes of hippocampal cells, reduced the level of malondialdehyde, and increased superoxide dismutase activity in serum or brain tissue as compared to model control. In addition, the Nrf2, p62 and LC3B-II proteins expression were increased, and p-Tau and Keap1 proteins were decreased in the hippocampus after AP and andrographolide treatment.Furthermore, AP increased aluminum maltolate-induced cell viability in PC12 cells. Silencing p62 could reverse the upregulation expression of Nrf2 and downregulation of Keap1 and Tau proteins induced by AP in aluminum maltolate-treated cells. Conclusion sAP had neuroprotective effects against aluminum -induced cognitive dysfunction or cytotoxicity, which was involved in the activation of the p62-keap1-Nrf2 pathway and may develop as therapeutic drugs for the treatment of AD. However, this study has certain limitations, further optimize the protocol or model and study the molecular mechanism of AP improving AD.

The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential probiotic properties of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus VHProbi®M15 (M15). This study examined the effects of M15 on sucralfate-induced constipation in a mouse model. The BALB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups: the normal group (NOR) was without any treatment, while the constipation (CON), phenolphthalein (PHE), and probiotic (PRO) treatment groups were fed with sucralfate until the appearance of constipation symptoms. Afterward, the NOR and CON groups were given 1 ml saline orally every day until the end of the experiment; the PHE and PRO groups were given phenolphthalein or M15 suspension in 1 ml orally, respectively. Compared with the CON group, the fecal water content and intestinal peristalsis improved in the PRO group. Here, intake of M15 effectively attenuated sucralfate-induced constipation, recuperated colonic epithelial integrity, and increased serum levels of gastrointestinal excitatory neurotransmitters (motilin, gastrin, substance P). Analysis of the intestinal microbiota of mice by 16S rRNA metagenomic revealed an increase in the relative abundance of Bacteroides and a decrease in Sclerotinia, Verrucosa and Proteus in the PRO group. Compared with the CON group, the constipation-induced intestinal microecological changes were partially recovered in the PHE and PRO groups. These results demonstrate that M15 enhanced gastrointestinal transit and alleviated in mice with sucralfate-induced constipation.

Aluminum (Al)-induced bone metabolism disorder is a primary cause of osteoporosis. Ginsenoside Rg3 (Rg3) has demonstrated therapeutic properties in the treatment of osteoporosis. The present study aimed to identify potential bone protection mechanisms of Rg3 against Al-induced osteoporosis in rats. In this study, forty healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly allocated into groups in which they were treated with AlCl 3 (64 mg/kg/day) and/or Rg3 (20 mg/kg/day). AlCl 3 was given orally to rats for 120 days, and from the 91st day, treated orally with Rg3 for 30 days. Rg3 attenuated AlCl 3 -induced accumulation of Al by decreasing the bone mineral density in the lumbar spines, femoral metaphysis, and tibia, and inhibited AlCl 3 -induced oxidative stress in rat bone by decreasing the levels of reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde, while increasing glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase activity. Rg3 facilitated bone formation by increasing the concentration of calcium, phosphorus, amino-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, and carboxyl-terminal propeptide of type I procollagen, bone alkaline phosphatase activity in serum, and type I collagen, osteocalcin, and osteopontin protein expressions. Rg3 inhibited bone resorption by decreasing the content of N-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen, C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide of type I collagen, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase 5b activity in serum. Rg3 promoted the mRNA expression of growth regulation factors by increasing transforming growth factor-β1, bone morphogenetic protein-2, insulin-like growth factor I, and core-binding factor α1. The results demonstrate that Rg3 can significantly attenuate Al accumulation, facilitate bone formation, inhibit bone resorption, resist oxidative stress, and promote the expression of factors that regulate growth. The results indicate that Rg3 is effective in alleviating AlCl 3 -induced osteoporosis.
