Corrosion of aluminum (Al) alloys during service limits many applications. Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings can enhance corrosion resistance, but porous defects in the films undermine their effectiveness. Here, by mixing a phosphate electrolyte with soluble Zn and Ce salts, zinc phosphate and cerium phosphate co-doped MAO corrosion-resistant coating is prepared on Al alloy LY12. Zinc phosphate and cerium phosphate are incorporated in situ to form an amorphous encapsulated nanocrystalline structure. During long-term corrosion, Zn 2+ is released and deposited as corrosion products Zn(OH) 2 to cover weak corrosion micro-regions in the coating. Simultaneously, Ce 3+ released from MAO coating co-doped with zinc phosphate/cerium phosphate forms Zn(OH) 2 /Ce(OH) 3 due to the small solubility product K sp to further enhance corrosion resistance. Compared to pristine Al alloy, corrosion potential increases from -1.306 to -0.819 V SCE , and corrosion current density decreases by 4 orders of magnitude from 2.6 × 10 −6 to 2.5 × 10 −10 A·cm −2 . Co-doped MAO coating significantly enhances corrosion resistance of Al alloy LY12 and shows great potential for a wide range of applications.

Aluminum-lithium alloy powder exhibits better thermal properties and combustion performances than aluminum , thus showing promising applications in the field of energetic materials such as explosives and propellants. However, the high activity of lithium also raises issues of stability and compatibility with propellant components, deteriorating the powder's overall performance. In this study, a facile coating method is presented using 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (PFOTS) as a surfactant to coat hydroxyl‑terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) on the surface of Al-5Li powder, forming the core-shell composite Al-5Li@HTPB. The microstructure and chemical composition characterized by SEM, EDS , XPS , FT-IR, and nano-CT demonstrated that a uniform and dense layer was successfully coated on the surface. The thermal analysis results showed a significant improvement in the thermal properties and stability compared to pure Al-5Li. In addition, ignition tests were conducted, and the results showed that Al-5Li@HTPB could reduce the ignition delay time and significantly reduce agglomeration. Overall, our strategy provides a novel method to solve the stability issues of Al-Li powders and simultaneously enhance combustion performance.

Aluminum-lithium alloys (Al-Li alloys) have gained prominence in recent years as promising alternatives to aluminum powders, attributed to their superior thermal and combustion characteristics. However, the high reactivity of Al-Li alloys poses significant challenges to their stability and compatibility with other materials. This study utilized high-energy ball milling to modify Al-Li alloys by incorporating polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and paraffin wax (WAX) as functional coatings. Thermal analysis of Al-Li/PTFE composites revealed a marked reduction in the thermal oxidative exothermic peak temperature with the addition of 10 % and 15 % PTFE, accompanied by enthalpy increases of 1.49 and 2.1 times, respectively. Combustion processes captured using a high-speed camera demonstrated that increasing the PTFE content from 10 % to 30 % intensified the combustion and reduced combustion duration by 50 %. The agglomeration of combustion residues also decreased. Furthermore, incorporating WAX through ball milling facilitated high-temperature phase transformations, producing Al-Li/10PTFE/2WAX composite powders with enhanced antioxidant properties, as evidenced by a contact angle of 131.15°, and improved compatibility. The findings offer a pathway for achieving tunable combustion performance in Al-Li alloys while addressing critical issues related to the storage and processing of these powders for practical applications.

Aluminum-lithium (Al–Li) alloys are crafted by incorporating minute quantities of Li into Al, thereby alleviating the passivation effect of dense alumina. This strategic blend elevates the energy release potential of Al-based fuels by enhancing reactivity and facilitating efficient combustion reactions. The effects of Li content and particle size on the combustion characteristics of Al–Li alloys are systematically investigated, with a particular focus on several pivotal aspects: thermal oxidation behavior, ignition delay time, combustion time, combustion intensity, temperature, and the condensed-phase products. The results show that, upon heating to 1500°C, the oxidation weight gain of Al–Li alloys reaches 6.5 times that of raw Al. This indicates that adding Li significantly enhances the extent of the oxidation reaction. Increased Li content and particle size reduction further accelerate the oxidation reaction. The ignition delay time and combustion time are effectively shortened, showing a more intense combustion process, higher flame temperature and more significant micro-explosion effect. Ultimately, these factors lead to a significant reduction in the size of condensed-phase products. Based on these insights, a comprehensive impact mechanism for the energy release of Al–Li alloys has been proposed, providing theoretical guidance for applying Al–Li alloys in related fields.

Because of the high capacity, natural abundance, and safety of aluminum (Al), the Al–Li alloy formed by combining it with lithium (Li) is an attractive anode material. In this paper, we propose a new type of lithium battery that works in an open system and does not require sealing, the “Lithium-Aluminum” soft pack battery (LAB). Al foil is applied to the anode of the LAB, LiCl is used for the electrolyte, and LiFePO 4 is used as the cathode. LAB incorporated Al–Li alloy into lithium batteries in a new way. During charging, lithium deposits in the anode undergo an electrochemical synthesis reaction with Al to produce Al–Li alloys, which decompose during discharge. The LAB has a discharge voltage plateau of about 2.8 V and a discharge capacity of 0.48 mAh/cm 2 (145.5 mAh/g), with the Coulombic efficiency remaining above 90 %. The capacity retention rate is 95.9 % after 600 cycles and still reaches 65.2 % after 800 cycles. Notably, the battery remains functional when bent at will and in a broken or punctured state. Compared to traditional lithium metal batteries (LMBs), our work demonstrates superior cycle stability, a safer operational environment, increased versatility in application scenarios, and reduced costs.

Al–Li alloys are considered promising materials in solid propellants owing to their higher combustion efficiency than Al particles, which exhibit incomplete combustion. However, Al–Li alloy particles cannot be directly applied in propellant systems owing to their poor compatibility. Thus, in this work, an in situ polymerized film was formed via the pretreatment of Al–Li alloy followed by polymerization with trifluoroethyl methacrylate (TFEMA) and N,N′-methylene-bis-acrylamide (MBA). The hydrothermal stability of the coated samples was improved with a mass variation rate of 5.82% on treatment with TFEMA (30%) and MBA (10%), corresponding to 116.62% of Al–Li at 60 °C and 75% humidity for 30 days. Besides, the thermostability increased based on the 19° backward skewing of the high temperature exothermic peak. Meanwhile, there were no pores and cracks in the HTPB propellant, which proved the possibility of its practical application with the compatibility of level 1 with HTPB in solid rocket motors. In addition, the Al–Li propellant exhibited a better combustion performance of 0.53 s and 1309.33 °C than the Q3 Al propellant, with 1.34 s ignition delay time and 990.24 °C burning temperature. The combustion efficiency was also improved based on the observation of combustion phenomena and residue size. Besides, the combustion mechanism was analyzed based on the characteristics of Al–Li with the micro-explosion effect. Therefore, Al–Li alloy has the potential to be used as a new generation solid propellant.

The potential of a multiphase Al–Li alloy with the unreported Al1.08Li1.92 phase for use as a hydrolytic material to produce hydrogen was studied. This alloy enabled rapid hydrogen release in a wide temperature range with robust hydrogen yield. It could produce 1496 ml H2 per g within merely 0.5 min at 299 K and release 1076 ml H2 per g in 0.5 min even at a subzero temperature of 243 K. The hydrogen production kinetics were confirmed with a chemical step and could be well controlled by tailoring the solution components of water/ethanol mixtures. Furthermore, the alloy showed good air-resistance ability, indicating its suitability for safe handling and transport in practical applications. Our results confirmed the excellent hydrogen production achieved using this Al-based generation system. It might shed light on the progress of hydrogen production technologies for commercial use.

Micro–nano structures with hydrophobic properties are promising in self-cleaning, anti-corrosion, and anti-icing performance. Here, we report a solvothermal method to construct micro–nano structures on Al–Li alloy by introduction oleylamine. The results show the concentration of oleylamine has an effect on morphology and hydrophobic property of micro–nano structures formed on Al–Li alloy. The X-ray diffraction results indicates the micro–nano structure is mixture with AlOOH and Al(OH) 3 . When the concentration of oleylamine is about 0.48 mol/L, the length of micro–nano structures is up to microscale, the width of micro–nano structures is about 100–200 nm, and the water contact angle can achieve 152.3°. Graphical A hydrothermal solution was prepared by mixing oleylamine, sodium formate, and DMF. Then, the uniform mixed solution was successfully used to prepare micro–nano structures on the surface of Al–Li alloy by a one-step hydrothermal method. The results show that when the concentration of oleylamine reaches the optimal level (0.48 mol/L), the micro–nano structure is uniform and the voids are filled with air, thus forming a superhydrophobic state.

The corrosion failure of aluminum‑lithium (Al Li) alloy, extensively used in aerospace and industry area, inevitably brings about considerable economic loss. In this work, stearic acid (STA) is utilized as a modulator for the low surface energy modification of TiO 2 particle. Polyurethane (PU) is employed as a binder to ensure the firm adhesion of modified STA@TiO 2 to Al Li alloy through a controllable and low-cost spraying process. Such structure design brings about a robust preparation of STA@TiO 2 /PU superhydrophobic coating for large-scale engineering application. The resultant coating exhibits a static water contact angle (CA) of 161.3 ± 0.8°, and a sliding angle (SA) of 3.1 ± 0.7°. The subsequent characterizations of surface morphology and chemical structure are performed using SEM, EDS, XPS, and laser confocal microscopy. Furthermore, the contrastive electrochemical impedances and kinetic potential polarizations are investigated on as-prepared coating and Al Li alloy substrate. The results indicate that the impedance modulus of STA@ TiO 2 /PU coating is enhanced by two orders of magnitude, while the corrosion potential demonstrates an increasement of 180 mV. The experimental tests confirm a significant improved corrosion resistance for STA@ TiO 2 /PU coating. Moreover, the effective self-cleaning, anti-pollution, buoyancy enhancement and anti-icing properties are discussed, and the corresponding interface behaviors and function implementation mechanisms are also systematically investigated. The findings have positive implications for expanding industrial applications of such multi-functional ceramic coatings in engineering construction, environmental protection, and harsh working conditions.

Aluminum-lithium alloy powders receive extensive concern as metal fuel in propellants for high heat value and coefficient of combustion. However, the presence of highly active metal lithium leads to the instability of alloy powder, limiting its application in propellants. Herein, the fluorination-energetic modification is developed to solve the activity problem of aluminum–lithium alloy (Al-5Li, Li 5 wt%) powders and increase their energy level. The first fluorinated layer is constructed by fluorosilane and epoxy silane coating to achieve the modifiable and functional aluminum–lithium alloy (Al-5Li@FS). Afterwards, the energetic layer is coated on Al-5Li@FS surface by glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) to obtain the fluorination-energetic composite powders (Al-5Li@FSG). The microstructural and chemical composition characterizations of Al-5Li@FSG are performed by SEM, FTIR, XPS, TEM, and TOF-SIMS. TG-DSC results show that the coated alloy powders can exhibit excellent thermal properties with remarkably enhanced exothermic enthalpy and thermal weight gain. The Al-5Li@FSG shows significantly improved combustion performances with reduced ignition delay time and repressed agglomeration phenomenon. Furthermore, hydrophobicity, water-reactivity, and compatibility with propellant components are also well modified of the Al-5Li@FSG. This work provides a guideline for preparing aluminum–lithium alloy powders with remarkable stability, excellent combustion performance, compatibility, and high energy level.

As a highly reactive metal fuel, aluminum–lithium (Al-Li) alloy is an ideal candidate for replacing Al powders in solid propellants. However, the Li solid solution and AlLi compounds on the surface of Al-Li alloy powders display high reactivity, which can react with a large number of organic and inorganic reagents. Thus, the incompatibility of Al-Li alloy with other components of propellants makes it difficult to be further applied in propellants. In this study, surface-modified Al-Li alloy powders (Li content of 5 wt%) with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane (FAS17) were prepared by a facile self-assembly method, which made the alloy powders super-hydrophobic. The results of SEM, XPS and FIB-TEM show that the surface of Al-Li alloy powder is well-coated by an evenly distributed FAS17 layer. Due to the fluoroalkyl on the surface of the powders, the water contact angle increased by 91°and the intensity of the reaction between alloy powders and water is significantly reduced, which results in improved compatibility with other components of propellants. Meanwhile, the propellant grain of surface-modified powders had fewer defects than the sample before coating, and showed original excellent combustion performance. The average combustion pressure and pressurization rate increased by ∼114 kPa and ∼8613 kPa/s, and the steady burning rate increased by 0.24 mm/s. Therefore, the surface-modified Al-Li alloy powders with FAS17 are expected to be an attractive candidate as a highly active and stable fuel in solid propellants.

Al-Li alloy was prepared by electrodeposition on solid aluminum electrode in a urea-LiCl (77.5:22.5, mol%) molten salt system at 353–393 K. The results of cyclic voltammetry and chronopotentiometry show that underpotential deposition of Li occurs on the Al electrode and forms phases of Al(α) and AlLi(δ) which are confirmed by XRD measurements. Scanning electron microscopy observation of deposits indicates that Al-Li alloy with the thickness of 143 µm was obtained by potentiostatic electrolysis at −0.5 V vs. Li+/Li. The Li content in the alloy obtained at 373 K can reach 6.9 wt%. Galvanostatic electrolysis at 20 A demonstrated that Al-Li alloy coating on aluminum plate can be obtained from urea-LiCl electrolyte at 373 K in the atmosphere.
