As a supporting material in the high-tech field, the distribution of indium in the earth's crust is small and scattered. An efficient material is required to selectively adsorb indium from the leaching of other minerals and secondary resources. In this study, an adsorbent phytic acid–hyperbranched polyethyleneimine–oxidized carbon fiber (PA–HPEI–OACF) was prepared by modifying carbon fibers with hyperbranched polyethyleneimine (HPEI) and phytic acid (PA) for the efficient adsorption and separation of In(III) in hydrochloric acid media. The adsorption and separation of absorbents was investigated using static adsorption. The adsorption mechanism of absorbents for In(III) was determined by XPS. The maximum adsorption capacity of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) was 34.21 mg L−1 at 298 K and pH of 3.5. The adsorption process of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and involves an endothermic reaction. The adsorption isotherm follows the Freundlich isotherm adsorption model. In the In(III), Fe(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) mixed solution, PA–HPEI–OACF only adsorbed In(III) and Fe(II) at pH 3.5, and the selectivity coefficient of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) over Fe(II) was 798.81. The XPS analysis revealed that the adsorption of PA–HPEI–OACF for In(III) was the result of the combined action of amine groups and phosphate groups with In(III).

The separation and recovery of indium from smelting wastes is of great importance. The development of an adsorbent material with high selectivity and easy handling and recovery for the selective adsorption of In(III) remains a challenge. Polyacrylonitrile modified nanofiber membranes (P-PAN) enriched with amine and phosphonic acid groups were prepared for highly selective adsorptive separation of In(III). The adsorption capacity of the resulting membranes for In(III) in solution was 55.05 mg·g −1 , and the adsorption regeneration rate of the membranes was more than 90 % after seven cycles. The separation factors of the P-PAN nanofiber membranes for β In/Fe , β In/Cu , β In/Zn and β In/Pb in a five-member mixed solution were 209.6, 397, 462.6, and 259.6, respectively. Experimental and theoretical calculations show that the joint action of P OH and P O in the P-PAN nanofiber membranes to form an electron-rich region makes the electrostatic potential energy in this region reach the maximum negative value (−52.02 kcal/mol), which is strongly attracted to In(III). In addition, the adsorption energy of P-PAN nanofiber membranes for In(III) was −494.56 kcal/mol, which was much higher than that of competing ions such as Fe(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), and Pb(II). The findings support the feasibility of regulating the binding capacity of adsorption sites to target metal ions via the protonation of –NH, thereby enhancing selectivity towards these ions.

A core–shell discoid shaped indium (III) sulfide@metal-organic framework (MIL-125(Ti)) nanocomposite was synthesized by a solvothermal method and explored as an adsorbent material for dispersive solid-phase extraction ( d -SPE) . The as-synthesized sorbent was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption analysis, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The extraction performance was evaluated by the d -SPE of 16 nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) from water samples. The analysis was carried out by gas chromatography (GC) coupled with triple quadruple mass spectrometer in negative chemical ionization (NCI) mode. The selected ion monitoring (SIM) was used in the quantification of the target NPAHs. Extraction factors affecting the d -SPE, including the ionic strength, extraction temperature, and extraction time were optimized by the response surface methodology. The developed d -SPE method showed good linear correlations from 10 to 1000 ng L −1 ( r > 0.99), low detection limits (2.9–83.0 ng L −1 ), satisfactory repeatability (relative standard deviation of <10%, n = 6), and acceptable recoveries (71.3%–112.2%) for water samples. The developed method was used for the food and environmental sample analysis. The results demonstrated that the method could be used for sample preparation of trace NPAHs in real samples.

An aminophosphonate extractant, di(2-ethylhexyl) (N, N′-di(2-ethylhexyl) amino methyl) phosphonate (abbreviated as L ) was synthesized and applied for the extraction and separation of gallium and indium from chloride solution. The maximum separation factors SF Ga/In reached 995, which is higher than those obtained with its analogues such as Cextrant 230 ( SF Ga/In = 471) and BEADP ( SF Ga/In = 201) at the optimum acidity conditions. The extracted complexes were determined to be HGaCl 4 L 2 and InCl 3 L 2 . The extraction reactions of gallium and indium were both endothermic. The loading capacities of 30 vol% L for Ga and In were 32.9 g/L and 25.2 g/L, respectively. The loaded gallium and indium in organic phase can be effectively stripped by distilled water, H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 . A process was established for the separation and purification of gallium, by which the purity of Ga 2 O 3 increases from 98.4% to 99.97% with a yield of 92.5%.

A hydrid microsphere Fe3O4@carbon@poly(InIII-carboxylate) consisting of a cluster of Fe3O4 nanoparticles as the core, a carbon layer as the inner shell and a porous InIII–carboxylate coordination polymer as the outer shell was prepared and applied as a recyclable catalyst for the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and epoxides. Construction of this hybrid microsphere was achieved in the two steps, including (1) the one-pot solvothermal synthesis of Fe3O4@C particles with the abundant carboxylic groups on the carbon surface and (2) the subsequent growth of the outer shell polymers based on the precipitation coordination polymerization. Imidazolium-substituted Salen ligands were synthesized and chelated with the In(III) ions using the terminal carboxylic groups. The coordination polymer shell was formed on the Fe3O4@C particles, and the structures including shell thickness, surface area and porosity could be varied by tuning the feeding ratios of the In(III) ions and the ligands. The optimal structure of the coordination polymers showed a shell thickness of ca. 45 nm with ∼5 nm of mesopore, 174.7 m2/g of surface area and 0.2175 cm3/g of pore volume. In light of gas uptake capability, catalytic activity and magnetic susceptibility, cycloaddition of CO2 with a series of epoxides were studied by using Al-complexed Fe3O4@C@InIII-[IL-Salen] microspheres. The results validated that the self-supporting catalytic layer with high surface area was of remarkable advantages, which were attributed from great increment of effective active sites and combination of nucleophilic/electrophilic synergistic property and CO2 uptake capability. Therefore, these hybrid microspheres provided excellent catalytic activity, prominent selectivity to cyclic carbonates and outstanding recyclability with the assistance of an applied magnetic field.
