More and more attention has been redirected to per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFASs), particularly perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), owing to their ecotoxicity and environmental risks. As one of the major emerging and persistent contaminants in the environment, the current treatment processes could not remove PFOA efficiently. The recent advances in heterogeneous photocatalysis have demonstrated high efficiencies in degrading persistent contaminants, which provides an alternative approach for PFOA removal. Notably, Ga2O3-based photocatalysts exhibited great potential for PFOA remediation due to their high oxidizing capability and energy sustainability. Thus, Ga2O3 hierarchical nanosheets modified by a series of transition metals were rationally developed, and applied as heterogeneous photocatalysts for fast and efficient PFOA degradation. Noteworthily, the indium modified Ga2O3 hierarchical nanosheets achieved prominent PFOA decomposition activity, which can completely degrade 20 mg L−1 PFOA within 1 hour. The In–Ga2O3 hierarchical composites have dramatically enhanced the degradation kinetics for PFOA, which was 7.8 times higher than that of pristine Ga2O3. With in-depth mechanism investigation, we have demonstrated that In modification can not only enhance light harvesting and suppress photogenerated carrier recombination, but also favor the improvement of the adsorption ability for PFOA through the coexistence of monodentate and bidentate/bridging coordination modes. The transition metals–modification strategy paves the way for fabricating high-performance nanoscale photocatalysts for the removal of PFASs in water.

The impact of Indium (In) doping upon the catalytic performance of Pd-Cu/Al 2 O 3 for carbon monoxide preferential oxidation (CO-PROX) in hydrogen (H 2 ) rich atmosphere at low temperature has been studied. A series of catalysts with extremely low palladium (Pd) loading (0.06 wt%) are synthesized by the facile co-impregnation method. When the In/copper (Cu) atomic ratio equals 0.25, Pd-Cu-In 0.25 /Al 2 O 3 can keep 40% CO conversion and 100% carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) selectivity at least 120 min at 30 °C, which is significantly superior to the catalytic performance of Pd-Cu/Al 2 O 3 . The elaborate characterization findings reveal that the added In species to Pd-Cu/Al 2 O 3 causes Indium oxide (In 2 O 3 ) to generate, which produces the interaction of In 2 O 3 with Pd-Cu/Al 2 O 3 , further promoting the dispersion of copper chloride hydroxide (Cu 2 Cl(OH) 3 ). Moreover, the modification of In facilitates the re-oxidation of Pd 0 to Pd + through reducing the formation of palladium hydride (PdH x ) during the CO-PROX reaction. Meanwhile, the addition of In leads to the decrease of Cu + electron cloud density, making it easier to be oxidized to Cu 2+ . Collectively, the easy re-oxidation of Pd 0 and Cu + is favorable to fulfill the Wacker cycle between Pd and Cu species, thus improving the catalytic performance for CO-PROX.

The reverse water–gas shift (RWGS) reaction has been identified as one of the most techno-economically viable strategies for handling with antropogenic CO 2 emissions, but high-efficiency RWGS catalysts are still challenging. Herein, a series of In-modified Ni-based catalysts with variations of the support and the Ni/In ratio were prepared by a simple wet impregnation method. The high activity for RWGS reaction is achieved on the CeO 2 -supported catalysts. The incorporation of In into Ni/CeO 2 catalysts significantly increases CO selectivity. The optimal 10Ni-5In-CeO 2 catalyst shows 97.2 % CO selectivity at CO 2 conversion rate of 52.8 mmol g Ni −1 h −1 for 100 h without obvious deactivation at 350 °C. The oxygen vacancies on CeO 2 and the active *H species on Ni-In intermetallic compounds (IMCs) are responsible for the enhancement of RWGS reaction. This work provides a guidance to high-efficiency catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation by cooperation between active metal and oxide support.

Ni-rich layered lithium transition metal oxides have been considered as one of the most promising cathodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high capacities and affordable costs. However, they still suffer bulk and surface structural instability, leading to rapid performance decay and subsequent cathode failure. In this context, Ni-rich layered cathodes with indium modified crystal and surface structures are developed by a simple one-pot calcination approach. Battery tests manifest that the indium modified LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 electrodes exhibit remarkably enhanced rate capability and cycling stability compared to the pristine one, including under high operating voltage condition. Further studies evidence a simultaneous mitigation of intra/inter-granular mechanical cracks and resistive surface films growth, which directly embodied in a dramatically suppressed ohmic loss after long-term cycling. The improved microstructural and surface stability are attributed by the synergistic functions of indium modification. On the one hand, trace amount of In 3+ occupy crystalline Li + -site, which not only dissipate the intrinsic lattice strain during cycling, but also reduce Li + /Ni 2+ antisite to avoid the undesired layer to rock-salt phase transformation. On the other hand, the rest of indium deplete lithium residues, and form conductive LiInO 2 adherent coatings to protect the cathode from side reactions with electrolyte. The present work demonstrates that microstructure and surface engineering through indium modification offers a promising design strategy for further improvements of Ni-rich layered cathodes.

Electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2ER) has become an effective solution to relieve the energy crisis and tackle climate change. In this study, a series of tin-based organic frameworks modified by In (Sn-MOF/Inx) were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method and explored for high formate-selective CO2ER. The pure Sn-MOF exhibits maximum formate selectivity with a faradaic efficiency (FEformate) of approximately 85.0% and a current density of 15 mA cm−2 at −1.16 VRHE, while the In (6%)-modified Sn-MOF (Sn-MOF/In6) delivers a much higher maximum FEformate (around 97.5%) and a current density of 16 mA cm−2 at −0.96 VRHE. Remarkably, the Sn-MOF/In6 exhibits a significantly larger specific surface area (183.3 m2 g−1) compared to the Sn-MOF (65.2 m2 g−1). These findings indicate that introducing In, an alien element with a slightly different outer orbital electron number from that of Sn, can significantly boost the selectivity and activity for CO2ER to formate. This study presents an efficient way to modify MOF catalysts through a well-designed introducing process.

Urea is of great importance for the survival and development of mankind because of its advantages in effectively increasing crop yields. A novel carbon-supported indium-doped bismuth nanoparticles (Bi: 10 %In/C NPs) was prepared for the synthesis of urea via the co-activated reduction of nitrate and CO 2 with an average Faraday efficiency (FE) of 20.31 % and urea yield (R urea ) of 606.38 μg mg −1 h −1 . Interestingly, the In doped here not only serves as the active site, but also acts as an activator to stimulate the activity of Bi through electronic interaction, thus making Bi also the active site for the electrocatalytic C-N coupling reaction. Simultaneously, the key intermediates of the reaction are revealed to be *NH 2 and *CO. This work provides further insight into the role of indium in the electrocatalytic C-N coupling for the synthesis of urea, which gives a direction for thinking about the design and construction of subsequent highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Trimethylamine (TMA) gas is highly irritating and toxic, posing serious threats to human health and the environment. Traditional gas sensors typically rely on elevated temperatures (e.g., 200–400 °C) to activate surface reactions, resulting in high energy consumption and potential safety hazards. In this study, we successfully synthesized a nanocomposite sensing material based on two-dimensional ZnAl layered double hydroxides (LDHs) via a hydrothermal method and applied it for TMA detection at room temperature. To enhance gas sensing performance, In 3+ ions were introduced for surface modification and sensitization, resulting in ZnAlIn-LDHs materials with excellent TMA sensing characteristics. Structural and morphological characterizations confirmed the formation of In(OH) 3 /ZnAlIn-LDHs nanocomposites with optimized microstructures and enhanced surface activity. Gas sensing evaluations revealed that the sensor based on In(OH) 3 /ZnAlIn-LDHs exhibited a high response of 68.5 % ((R a -R g )/R a ∗100 %) to 100 ppm TMA, with a fast response time of 32 s and a recovery time of 34 s at room temperature. Additionally, the sensor demonstrated superior selectivity, long-term stability, and ppb-level detection capability, significantly outperforming pristine ZnAl-LDHs. The synergistic effect between In(OH) 3 and ZnAlIn-LDHs greatly improves the gas sensing performance, offering a promising strategy for the development of next-generation room-temperature TMA gas sensors with high sensitivity and low power consumption.
