Phase and structure modulating of bimetallic Cu/In nanoparticles realizes efficient electrosynthesis of syngas with wide CO/H2 ratios

Shen Chenqi,Wang Pengtang,Li Leigang,Huang Xiaoqing,Shao Qi

Syngas (CO + H 2 ) is the incredibly important feedstock for producing synthetic fuels and various value-added chemicals. CO 2 electrochemical reduction to syngas is an environmental-friendly and sustainable approach, but still challenging to produce tunable syngas with a wide ratio of CO/H 2 . Herein, by modulating the structure and phase, we have successfully obtained a series of copper-indium (Cu-In) catalysts, which are efficient for producing syngas with tunable CO/H 2 ratios. A series of CuIn bimetallic catalysts with different structures from hollow sphere to two-layer hollow sphere and different phases from CuO to Cu 2 O are developed. We find that the CO and H 2 are the only gaseous products, in which the CO/H 2 ratios can be readily tuned from 1.2 ± 0.1 to 9.0 ± 1.5 by simply controlling the thermal annealing temperature. It also exhibits high durability during a 10-h test. The unique performance is attributed to the modulated In enrichment on the Cu surfaces during the CO 2 reduction reaction, which causes the differences in binding energies for key reaction intermediates, thus resulting in the tunable composition of syngas. The present work emphasizes a simple yet efficient phase and structure modulating strategy for designing potential electrocatalysts for producing syngas with widely tunable CO/H 2 ratios.

High-efficient carbon dioxide-to-formic acid conversion on bimetallic PbIn alloy catalysts with tuned composition and morphology

Xueliang Sun,Xiaolin Shao,Jin Yi,Jiujun Zhang,Yuyu Liu

CO 2 electroreduction to value-added chemicals and fuels has gained increasing attention; however, there are only a few catalysts with high performance under mild conditions that can be used in this technique. In this study, single metal Pb, In and bimetallic PbIn catalysts for aqueous CO 2 electroreduction were prepared using a facile 3-step process including PbIn granulation by reducing Pb(NO 3 ) 2 /In(NO 3 ) 3 aqueous solution with NaBH 4 , calcination in air, and in situ electroreduction. The bimetallic PbIn catalysts had better catalytic performance on CO 2 electroreduction than single metal catalysts. The bimetallic Pb 7 In 3 catalyst (atomic ratios of Pb and In is 7:3) presented the highest formic acid faradaic efficiency of 91.6% at −1.26 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode in a 0.5 M CO 2 -saturated KHCO 3 aqueous solution, which was 13% and 9.7% higher than that of single Pb and In catalysts, respectively. Moreover, the catalyst remained active after 10 h of continuous CO 2 electrolysis with a stale current density of −17 mA cm −2 . The experimental results showed that the excellent catalytic performance of Pb 7 In 3 catalyst may stem from its higher electrochemical active surface area, lower charge-transfer resistance and the synergistic effect of Pb and In in the catalyst. The presented bimetallic PbIn catalysts may have a wide of application prospect, and they may be synthesized from heavy metals in industrial wastewaters .

Copper-indium hybrid derived from indium-based metal-organic frameworks grown on oxidized copper foils promotes the efficient electroreduction of CO2 to CO

Lulu Yan,Wenli Su,Xingzhong Cao,Peng Zhang,Yu Fan

This work reports a novel and effective method for the preparation of the copper-indium bimetallic electrocatalysts by the in situ growth of indium-based metal organic frameworks on oxidized copper foils as the precursor. Compared with the oxide-derived copper and the copper-based carbon material derivative grown in situ on oxidized copper foils, the as-prepared copper-indium electrocatalyst with a self-supporting structure, high roughness factor and rich lattice defects exhibits a superior CO Faradaic efficiency of 95% and good stability for the 36-h potentiostatic test at −0.6 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode. Density functional theory calculations indicated that the indium atoms occupying the surface copper vacancy defects show lower free energy needed for the formation of *COOH and more difficult desorption of *H than indium atoms, supported on the perfect copper surface. Thereby, the copper-indium catalyst promotes CO 2 electroreduction to CO and strongly inhibits hydrogen evolution.

Highly active Pd–In/mesoporous alumina catalyst for nitrate reduction

Zhenwei Gao,Yonggang Zhang,Deyi Li,Charles J. Werth,Yalei Zhang,Xuefei Zhou

The catalytic reduction of nitrate is a promising technology for groundwater purification because it transforms nitrate into nitrogen and water. Recent studies have mainly focused on new catalysts with higher activities for the reduction of nitrate. Consequently, metal nanoparticles supported on mesoporous metal oxides have become a major research direction. However, the complex surface chemistry and porous structures of mesoporous metal oxides lead to a non-uniform distribution of metal nanoparticles , thereby resulting in a low catalytic efficiency. In this paper, a method for synthesizing the sustainable nitrate reduction catalyst Pd–In/Al 2 O 3 with a dimensional structure is introduced. The TEM results indicated that Pd and In nanoparticles could efficiently disperse into the mesopores of the alumina. At room temperature in CO 2 -buffered water and under continuous H 2 as the electron donor, the synthesized material (4.9   wt% Pd) was the most active at a Pd–In ratio of 4, with a first-order rate constant ( k obs   =   0.241   L   min −1   g cata −1 ) that was 1.3× higher than that of conventional Pd–In/Al 2 O 3 (5   wt% Pd; 0.19   L   min −1   g cata −1 ). The Pd–In/mesoporous alumina is a promising catalyst for improving the catalytic reduction of nitrate.

CO2 hydrogenation to methanol over the copper promoted In2O3 catalyst

Rui Zou,Chenyang Shen,Kaihang Sun,Xinbin Ma,Zhuoshi Li,Maoshuai Li,Chang-Jun Liu

The metal promoted In 2 O 3 catalysts for CO 2 hydrogenation to methanol have attracted wide attention because of their high activity with high methanol selectivity. However, there was still no experimental confirmation if copper could be a good promoter for In 2 O 3 . Herein, the Cu promoted In 2 O 3 catalyst was prepared using a deposition-precipitation method. Such prepared Cu/In 2 O 3 catalyst shows significantly higher CO 2 conversion and space time yield (STY) of methanol, compared to the un-promoted In 2 O 3 catalyst. The loading of Cu facilitates the activation of both H 2 and CO 2 with the interface between the Cu cluster and defective In 2 O 3 as the active site. The Cu/In 2 O 3 catalyst takes the CO hydrogenation pathway for methanol synthesis from CO 2 hydrogenation. It exhibits a unique size effect on the CO adsorption. At temperatures below 250 °C, CO adsorption on Cu/In 2 O 3 is stronger than that on In 2 O 3 , causing higher methanol selectivity. With increasing temperatures, the Cu catalyst aggregates, which leads to the formation of weak CO adsorption site and causes a decrease in the methanol selectivity. Compared with other metal promoted In 2 O 3 catalysts, it can be concluded that the catalyst with stronger CO adsorption possesses higher methanol selectivity.

Tailoring the electrolyte microenvironment of indium catalysts for enhanced formic acid electrosynthesis

Zifan Zhu,Yuanxiang Zhao,Pengfei Sun,Yuchen Sun,Xintao Ma,Yunyun Dong,Zhihao Zhang,Abdullah N. Alodhayb,Xiaodong Yi,Wei Shi,Zhou Chen

Electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to formic acid is considered an economically viable avenue toward carbon neutrality. Indium-based catalysts have garnered considerable attention in CO 2 RR owing to their elevated hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotential and eco-friendly characteristics. We have synthesized In 2 O 3 nanofibers rich in oxygen vacancies using the electrospinning technique. The resultant 500-In 2 O 3 exhibited superior performance in converting CO 2 RR to HCOOH, achieving an impressive formate Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 92.1% at a current density of −600 mA cm −2 . Moreover, it demonstrated remarkable stability, maintaining its performance over 100 h at a current density of −300 mA cm −2 under a neutral electrolyte. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations, in conjunction with spectroscopic characterizations, have revealed that a Cl-modified In catalyst exhibits a lowered energy barrier for the formation of *HCOOH, while simultaneously inhibiting the generation of *H, in contrast to its pristine In counterpart. Ultimately, we successfully engineered a dual-electrode system capable of simultaneously producing formate at both the cathode and the anode. At a current density of −100 mA cm −2 , our system achieves a reduction in energy consumption by 12.5% and a significant enhancement in electrical energy conversion efficiency by 39.9%.

Nanoscale Confinement of Indium Oxide for Enhanced CO2 Hydrogenation to Methanol

Xiarui Yan,Junsheng Chen,Zhaorui Kong,Xinyi Wan,Youmin Hou,Bin Hua

Research on CO2 hydrogenation catalysts, particularly In2O3-based materials, is crucial for developing sustainable CO2 utilization and chemical production technologies, contributing to a cleaner future. We address the critical challenge of efficient and stable CO2 conversion by developing a novel Zr-doping strategy to enhance In2O3 catalyst performance for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol. Our key contribution is identifying the nanoscale confinement effect as crucial for optimizing both the activity and stability of In2O3 catalysts. By leveraging this nanoscale confinement effect, we have precisely controlled the size, dispersion, and reducibility of In2O3 nanoparticles, resulting in the formation and stabilization of highly active In2O3–x with oxygen vacancies. This confinement also effectively suppresses In0 migration and sintering, dramatically improving catalyst stability. The resulting Zr-doped catalysts exhibit significantly higher activity and stability compared to the undoped In2O3/ZrO2 catalyst, achieving a remarkable space-time yield of 4.708 gMeOH gIn–1 h–1 and demonstrating durability under industrially relevant conditions. This discovery offers a promising new direction for the rational design of high-performance CO2 hydrogenation catalysts and lays the foundation for future advances in sustainable catalysis.

Insights into novel indium catalyst to kW scale low cost, high cycle stability of iron-chromium redox flow battery

Yingchun Niu,Yinping Liu,Tianhang Zhou,Chao Guo,Guangfu Wu,Wenjie Lv,Ali Heydari,Bo Peng,Chunming Xu,Quan Xu

Iron-chromium flow batteries (ICRFBs) have emerged as an ideal large-scale energy storage device with broad application prospects in recent years. Enhancement of the Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ redox reaction activity and inhibition of the hydrogen evolution side reaction (HER) are essential for the development of ICRFBs and require a novel catalyst design. However, elucidating the underlying mechanisms for modulating catalyst behaviors remains an unresolved challenge. Here, we show a novel precisely controlled preparation of a novel thermal-treated carbon cloth electrode with a uniform deposit of low-cost indium catalyst particles. The density functional theory analysis reveals the In catalyst has a significant adsorption effect on the reactants and improves the redox reaction activity of Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ . Moreover, H + is more easily absorbed on the surface of the catalyst with a high migration energy barrier, thereby inhibiting the occurrence of HER. The assembled ICRFBs have an average energy efficiency of 83.91% at 140 mA/cm 2 , and this method minimizes the electrodeposition process and cleans the last obstacle for industry long cycle operation requirements. The ICRFBs exhibit exceptional long-term stability with an energy efficiency decay rate of 0.011% per cycle at 1000 cycles, the lowest ICRFBs reported so far. Therefore, this study provides a promising strategy for developing ICRFBs with low costs and long cycle life.

Boosting Solar Methanol Production over Hierarchical Carbon Nanocage-Supported In2O3–x via Photoenhanced Electron Buffering Effect

Xudong Dong,Zhijie Zhu,Zhijie Chen,Zixuan Sun,Shuairen Qian,Zidi Wang,Yuxuan Zhou,Kaiqi Nie,Shuang Liu,Zimu Li,Mengqi Xiao,Jinpan Zhang,Binhang Yan,Yi Cheng,Chaoran Li,Xiaohong Zhang,Xingda An,Kai Feng,Zheng Hu,Le He

Solar methanol production represents a key technology meaningful for the production of liquid fuels as well as carbon neutralization. However, it is faced with the crucial challenge of limited reaction rate, selectivity, and stability. In this study, we develop a hierarchical carbon nanocage (hCNC)-supported In2O3 synergistic catalyst for robust methanol production driven solely by sunlight. hCNC plays a unique role as “electron buffers” for dynamic modulation of the oxygen vacancy (Ov) concentration in In2O3, addressing the long-standing challenge of Ov-induced destabilization. Notably, the photoenhanced electron buffering enables both electron transfer toward Ov-deficient In2O3, promoting Ov generation, and electron extraction from Ov-rich In2O3–x, preventing over-reduction. Consequently, both the high- and low-energy photons in the solar spectrum were harvested toward synergistic photothermal/photochemical catalysis, achieving a record-high methanol production rate of 4.6 mmol·gcat–1·h–1 with >51% selectivity. Our discovery of the photoenhanced electron buffering provides a perspective for dynamic modulation of nonthermal photocatalytic mechanisms; besides, the synergistic combination of photochemical and photothermal pathways also provides important guidelines for efficient solar methanol production.

Simultaneously catalyze 1,3-dioxolane polymerization and construct a hybrid protection layer on lithium anode by InF3 catalyst

Xueting Yang,Dezhan Ye,Chenyi Wang,Yazhou Chen,Xiancai Jiang,Yingcheng Yang,Zengjin Liu

The emerging approach of in-situ polymerization of solid polymer electrolytes based on 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) possesses the advantage of low interfacial impedance and relatively high Coulombic efficiency. However, the DOL monomer conversion (C%) under Lewis acid catalysts needs to be further improved, besides their alloying ability with lithium metal to generate protective interfacial layer has been ignored. Here, the above two aims are simultaneously achieved by Indium Trifluoride (InF 3 ) catalyst. It is demonstrated that the highest C% is up to 94% with 15 mg of InF 3 in the 1 mL electrolyte (1 M LiTFSI/DOL). The optimized ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transfer number are 8.9 × 10 −5  S/cm (30 °C) and 0.42, respectively. The stable interface between poly-DOL and lithium metal anode could be proved by the stable over-potential (156mv, 900 h) at current density of 2.0 mA cm −2 . X-ray diffraction results confirm the presence of In and In–Li alloy peaks. After 300 cycles at 1C, the assembled Li/PDI 15 /LiFePO 4 cells deliver a 125.2mAh/g, 90% capacity retention and Coulombic efficiency of 99.75%, respectively. This innovative and facile strategy of dual functional InF 3 on the in-situ polymerization of DOL and solid electrolyte interphase formation provides new ideas for design poly-DOL based solid polymer electrolytes.
