Adsorption of Indium(III) Ions from an Acidic Solution by Using UiO-66

Wanyi Zeng,Lei Xu,Qiongling Wang,Chen Chen,Minglai Fu

Considering environmental friendliness and economic factors, the separation and extraction of indium under acidic conditions are of great significance. In this research, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of UiO-66 were successfully prepared and used for the separation and adsorption of indium. The properties of UiO-66 were structurally characterized using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analyzer (BET), thermogravimetric analysers (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results show that UiO-66 can resist acid and keep its structure unchanged, even at a strong acidity of pH 1. The adsorption performance of UiO-66 to indium (III) was also evaluated. The results show that the adsorption process of indium ions was by the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 11.75 mg·g−1being recorded. The adsorption kinetics experiment preferably fits the second-order kinetic model. A possible mechanism for the adsorption of In(III) by UiO-66 was explored through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared analysis(FT-IR). It was concluded that the C=O of free –COOH of UiO-66 was involved in the adsorption of In(III) by cation exchange. This study indicates, for the first time, that UiO-66 can be applied as an acid-resistant adsorbent to recover indium (III).Keywords:UiO-66;MOFs;Adsorption;Indium recovery

Facile indium recovery from waste liquid crystal displays: Chloride-facilitated indium electroreduction and stepwise Cu/MoO2 and indium electrodeposition

Qingming Song,Ya Liu,Lingen Zhang,Zhenming Xu

With a huge amount of waste liquid crystal displays (LCDs) generated annually, their proper recycling raises continuous concern to realize pollution control (heavy metal and liquid crystal) and resource recovery (indium). However, due to their multi-metal feature, traditional hydrometallurgy lacks of sufficient selectivity, which makes the recycling route lengthy, costly, and generate more waste. Electrodeposition acts as a promising technique for selective metal extraction from multi-metal system due to its high selectivity and electron as clean reagent. To fully develop its application in metal recovery, stepwise Cu/MoO 2 and In electrodeposition from In-Cu-Mo-Fe waste LCD leachate is explored in depth. Electrochemical behavior analysis shows Cu and MoO 2 can be first electrodeposited for their higher electroreduction potential. Cl - plays a key role in accelerating indium electroreduction kinetics, which largely shortens the extraction time without the sacrifice of current efficiency . This accelerating effect is attributed to the increased concentration of electroactive species or collision frequency . Under optimized condition, 99.41% of indium (> 99% purity) can be electrodeposited within 13 h with high current efficiency. This study provides a cleaner approach for waste LCDs recycling and gives implications for the potential application of electrochemical technique in e-waste recycling.

Separation and recovery of indium in hazardous liquid crystal display treatment by a novel silica adsorbent: Study on adsorption mechanism and process design

Jianchun Qin,Shunyan Ning,Jianing Xu,Jishu Zeng,Zheyu He,Liang Luo,Fengtao Hu,Yimin Li,Toyohisa Fujita,Yuezhou Wei

The treatment of hazardous LCD is a complicated coupled process, which contains a large number of impurity metals, especially Fe(III), increased the difficulty of In(III) recovery. Moreover, the defects of the traditional extraction process, such as extractant ageing quickly, difficulty to back-extraction, and easy emulsification , seriously restricted the efficient and environmentally friendly recovery of In . Therefore, a novel adsorbent (D2EHPA/SiO 2 –P) was synthesized for the separation and recovery of In(III), and a new recovery process was developed to eliminate the defects of traditional In recovery process in this study. D2EHPA/SiO 2 –P exhibited excellent adsorption selectivity and kinetics for In(III), and the adsorption equilibrium was obtained within 3 min. The adsorption process of In(III) conformed to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model. In(III) on D2EHPA/SiO 2 –P was desorbed by 3 M HCl solution, and D2EHPA/SiO 2 –P still had high adsorption and desorption efficiency for In(III) after 5 times of adsorption-desorption cycle experiments. The adsorption mechanism study found that the O–H bond on the D2EHPA participated in the substitution reaction and bonded with In(III) as the adsorption site during the adsorption process. The bond order value of In–O bond was the lowest in the D2EHPA adsorbed In(III) during the desorption process, indicating that In–O bond was easy to break and desorption form D2EHPA. Finally, in the 0.1M H 2 SO 4 system, a new process of using H 2 C 2 O 4 to reduce Fe(III) in advance, and then using D2EHPA/SiO 2 –P to adsorb In(III) was designed to recover In(III) without producing toxic gas, which realized the separation of In(III) and Fe(III). Our findings showed that the developed recovery process was both efficient and environmentally friendly, which had the potential for industrial application of In recovery from hazardous LCD.

In-situ reaction for recycling indium from waste liquid crystal display panels by vaccum reduction with pyrolytic carbon as reductant

Ruixue Wang,Yiqing Hou,Zhenming Xu

In the past, the pretreatment and indium extracting were conducted in independent disposal system to recycle indium from waste liquid crystal display (LCD), which make the recycling process inefficient and costly. In this study, an efficient and environmental friendly indium recycling process was proposed by an in-situ reaction process. The carbon residue generated in the pretreatment stage (organic removing stage) was used as the reductant to extract indium in the same reaction system. Comparison results indicated that the reaction effects of pyrolytic carbon were much better than coke since the structure of pyrolytic carbon is porous which would make the reactants contact better, and promote the reaction efficiency. Futhermore, results showed that the pyrolytic carbon was sufficient for the indium reduction without adding extra reductant, and indium conversion rate can reach 99.08% under the condition of 935 °C, 5 Pa, 2.5 wt%, 30 min, <0.3 mm. In this study, the organic pollutants were removed, while the indium also could be recycled in a closed-loop system. To sum up, this study could simplify the process route of waste LCD recycling, and provide fundamental basis as well as practical experience for recycling waste LCD environmentally and efficiently.

Phase transfer-assisted indium recovery from spent liquid crystal display panels and its extension in preparing indium-based electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction

Yufeng Wu,Zhiyuan Ren,Hui Liu,Feng Guo,Shaonan Tian,Jun Yang

Transforming discarded electronic devices into low-cost and high-efficiency catalysts presents a win–win approach to address the scarcity of rare resources and sustainable energy challenges. Herein, we report an effective strategy that combines an ethanol-mediated dodecylamine (DDA) phase transfer with hydrothermal methods for facilitating the facile synthesis of indium (In)-based nanomaterials from the leachates of liquid crystal display panels (LCDPs) toward high-efficiency electrochemical CO 2 reduction reaction (eCO 2 RR). In this strategy, the rapid formation of coordinating compounds between the –NH 2 group of DDA and metal ions facilitates the separation of In 3+ cations from the acidic LCDPs leach solution by transferring them into an organic phase, which are then converted into InOOH nanoparticles with abundant oxygen vacancies (denoted as In-LCDPs and hereafter) through a low-temperature hydrothermal process. The eCO 2 RR evaluations confirm the superior electrocatalytic performance of the In-based nanoparticles produced from the LCDPs. In specific, within a broad potential range (−0.77 to −1.17 V vs RHE), the In-LCDPs show a Faradaic efficiency for formate (FE formate ) of 85 %, with the highest FE formate of 90.23 % at −0.97 V vs RHE, which is comparable to the FE formate (93.8 % at −0.97 V vs RHE) of In-based catalyst prepared from pure In precursors using the same method. Further investigations reveal that the Sn and Al impurities have minimal impact on the catalytic performance of In-LCDPs, while the presence of Fe 3+ impurities significantly enhance the production of hydrogen during the eCO 2 RR. This work might have provided a scalable pathway to transform LCDPs into value-added electrocatalysts for eCO 2 RR.

Facile synthesis of hydroxyl- and amine-riched porous polymer for indium recovery in water

Gen Li,Biao Zhang,Zhongcheng Ma,Zhonggang Wang

This manuscript presents the first report on employing porous polymers as adsorbents for indium recovery. Specifically, hydroxyl- and amine-riched poly (melamine-formic acid) network (PAN-FA) is successfully synthesized from melamine and formic acid via a facile “one-step” catalyst-free polymerization process, which exhibits hierarchical pores ranging from 0.52 nm to 5.95 nm and large BET specific surface area of 705 m 2  g −1 . The resultant PAN-FA contains large amount of secondary amine and hydroxyl groups capable of chelating with In 3+ ions. Moreover, the highly hydrophilic polymer skeleton and the existence of suitably large mesopores are favorable for the transport of In 3+ ions through the pore channels in water medium. As a result, PAN-FA shows the adsorption capacity of In 3+ ions (206.3 mg g −1 ) in water, surpassing previously reported indium-adsorbents. More importantly, after five cycling experiments, the porous structure of PAN-FA remains stable and the adsorption capacity is nearly unchanged. The combination of cheap raw materials, simple synthesis process, high adsorption capacity for In 3+ ions and pronounced recycling reusability endows PAN-FA with a promising candidate adsorbent for practical indium-recovery application.
