Ir Doping Modulates the Electronic Structure of Flower-Shaped Phosphides for Water Oxidation

Huiyu Sun,Shudi Yu,Jiongting Yin,Jie Li,Jun Yu,Tianpeng Liu,Wanyu Liang,Nannan Zhang,Yangping Zhang,Changqing Ye,Mengyun Hu,Yukou Du

Electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen is an efficient, clean, and environmentally friendly hydrogen production method with unlimited development prospects. However, its overall efficiency is hampered by the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) with complex electron transfer processes. Therefore, designing efficient and low-cost OER catalysts is the key to solving this problem. In this paper, Ir-doped Co2P/Fe2P (abbreviated as Ir-CoFeP/NF) was grown on nickel foam through the strategies of low amount noble-metal doping and mild phosphating. Phosphide derived from a floral metal–organic framework (MOF) exhibits regular three-dimensional (3D) morphology and large active area, avoiding the stacking of active sites. The addition of Ir can effectively adjust the electronic structure, change the position of the d-band center, and increase active sites, thus enhancing the catalytic activity. Hence, the optimized catalyst exhibits unexpected electrocatalytic OER activity with an ideal overpotential of 213 mV at 10 mA cm–2, as well as a low Tafel slope of 40.63 mV dec–1. Coupling with Pt/C for overall water splitting (OWS), the entire device only needs an ultralow cell voltage of 1.50 V to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm–2. Besides, the OWS can be maintained for more than 70 h. This study demonstrates the superiority of Ir-doped phosphide in accelerating water oxidation.

A fibrous Ir-doped NiFeOx on two-dimensional materials for high efficiency oxygen evolution reaction (OER)

Yifan Zhu,Chunxiang Liu,Hanlu Zhang,Zihan Zhou,Yunbo Jiang,Teng Wang,Yuzhou Liu

As a clean and renewable energy, hydrogen gas can be generated from water electrolysis which also involves the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The main commercial catalysts for OER are Ir and Ru based but have the problems of high cost and poor cycling stability. Herein, we designed a new electrocatalyst based on Ni, Fe and Ir compounds loaded on a unique two-dimensional carbon material, which can efficiently catalyze OER with high stability in alkaline solution. The composite was prepared by physical vapor deposition, showing a fibrous microscopic morphology with uniform particle size distribution. The fibrous structure ensured the exposure of active sites, which further improved OER activity. The loading of metallic iridium in the material is only 0.0858 mg cm −2 . The catalytic activity of OER was maintained for 54 h under alkaline conditions at a current density of 50 mA cm −2 without significant changes in current density. Characterization showed that the excellent activity and stability of the catalysts originated from the Ir insertion into the NiFe 2 O 4 lattice.

Hexagonal Perovskite Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.1Ir0.1O3−δ as an Efficient Electrocatalyst towards the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Qinxin Luo,Dan Lin,Wenqi Zhan,Wanqun Zhang,Lulu Tang,Jingjing Luo,Zhan Gao,Peng Jiang,Miao Wang,LuYuan Hao,Kaibin Tang

Currently, the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in the industrial application of renewable electrochemical technologies. Thus, developing electrocatalysts with high performance and sufficient stability for the OER is urgently pursued. Although perovskite oxides have provided numerous degrees of freedom for enhancing the electrocatalytic activity due to their diversity and flexibility, their investigation for the OER is mostly limited to pseudocubic structures. In this study, a complex perovskite oxide, Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.1Ir0.1O3−δ (BSCFI-91), with a six-layer hexagonal (6H) structure, is synthesized first, displaying higher OER activity. Based on parent Ba0.9Sr0.1Co0.8Fe0.2O3−δ (BSCF-91), BSCFI-91 is obtained by replacing iron (Fe) with low-level iridium (Ir) doping and produces a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 300 mV, a small Tafel slope of 61.2 mV dec–1, and good stability up to 10 h in a 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The dramatically enhanced OER performance is achieved by optimizing cobalt (Co) valence and highly oxidative oxygen species based on the hexagonal structure. The Ir incorporation facilitated the oxygen (O) p band center approaching to the Fermi level, indicating that BSCFI-91 could be a candidate in the electrocatalyst application. Moreover, this study opens up a new way to design efficient perovskite oxides for OER catalysis in terms of hexagonal crystal structures and composition modulation strategy.

Ir doping improved oxygen activation of WO3 for boosting acetone sensing performance at low working temperature

Jian Ding,Zhen Li,Yongchao Wang,Yi Liu,Fei Li,Xinru Yu,Peiqi Huang,Yang Wang

Thermally excited oxygen activation is the key to realize gas sensing by semiconductor. However, the relevant strategies and mechanisms are rarely studied. Herewith, the model material of highly oxygen catalytic active Ir doped WO 3 (Ir-WO 3 ) is prepared to elucidate the impact of enhanced oxygen activation on sensing performance. Interestingly, the 0.5 wt% Ir doped WO 3 successfully reduced the working temperature of WO 3 from 370 to 260 ℃ and significantly enhanced the response from 25.1 to 127.9 (at 50 ppm) for acetone. Meanwhile, the sensor also has fast response/recovery times (∼8.3/3.8 s), long-term stability, low detection limit (19 ppb) and high selectivity. Gas sensitive performance tests, in situ -DRIFTS and DFT calculations reveal that the Ir doping facilitates the oxygen adsorption and activation, which can significantly weaken the activation energy of acetone at low temperatures and contribute to enhance sensing performance. Our work paves a new pathway to improving metal oxide-based gas sensors at lower operating temperatures.

Tiny Ir doping of sub-one-nanometer PtMn nanowires: highly active and stable catalysts for alcohol electrooxidation

Fei Gao,Yangping Zhang,Fangfang Ren,Tongxin Song,Yukou Du

One-dimensional (1D) Pt-based nanowires (NWs) materials serve as efficient catalysts for alcohol electrocatalysis. However, precisely tailoring their size towards sub-one-nanometer scale has been verified as an effective method for enhancing electrocatalytic properties, which is rarely studied. In this work, we developed a one-pot simple yet efficient method for synthesizing a kind of sub-one-nanometer tiny Ir-doped PtMn NWs. The prepared PtMnIr NWs have an ultrathin structure with a mean diameter of around only 0.97 nm (about 3–5 atomic thickness), which display large surface areas and promote superficial Pt atom utilization. With the robust tiny Ir incorporation, the composition-optimized Pt74Mn21Ir5 NWs showed enhanced mass activity, which was 1.51 and 1.53 times higher than those of non-Ir-doped Pt79Mn21 NWs for acidic ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and methanol oxidation reaction (MOR). Moreover, benefiting from the atom-level ultrathin size and well-tuned ligand effect from Ir to PtMn, the EOR/MOR mass activities of sub-nanometric Pt74Mn21Ir5 NWs were 3.99- and 3.98-fold higher than those of Pt/C catalysts. More importantly, after successive EOR and MOR CV tests, the Ir-doped PtMn NWs still maintained 85.6% and 73.4% of the initial mass activity, which were much better than those of Pt79Mn21 NWs, Pt NWs, and Pt/C catalysts. This work could be extended to engineering other advanced materials with super sub-one-nanometer structure, which is beneficial for largely improving the catalytic performance.

Fabrication of Ru/Ir doped TiO2 electrode for electrocatalytic degradation of phenol

Qiaolin Ren,Ruirui Yang,Junying Li,Wenjun Yan,Zhongde Wang,Ailian Wu

Electrocatalytic oxidation technology has been proved as an efficient method for degradation in organic wastewater. The service lifetime and degradation efficiency of the electrode, one crucial struggle, limits the broad application of electrocatalytic oxidation technology. Herein, a Ru/Ir doped TiO 2 electrode with a long service lifetime was developed. Accelerated life experiment showed that the service life of an electrode was 33 h when the concentration of sulfuric acid was 1 M and the current density was 2000 mA·cm −2 . The influence on the phenol degradation was evaluated by researching the operating parameters. In particular, the possible mechanism of phenol removal at different pH is elucidated. It is found that acidic environment is favorable for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and phenol removal at a current density of 20 mA·cm −2 , pH 3 at 800 ppm NaCl, which can make the removal rates of phenol and COD with Ru/Ir doped TiO 2 anode up to 97.21% and 100%. In addition, it was demonstrated that the hydroxyl radicals play a foremost role in the degradation of phenol. Given the well stability and high service life, the Ru/Ir doped TiO 2 electrode holds promise for further industrial application in wastewater treatment.

Tuning crystal structure of iridium-incorporated titanium dioxide nanosupport and its influence on platinum catalytic performance in direct ethanol fuel cells

T.T. Huynh,P.C. Tuan Huy,H.T.Thuy Nguyen,D.T. Nguyen,S.T. Nguyen,H.Q. Pham

Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) has recently been used as a promising support for platinum (Pt)-based catalysts; however, its very low electrical conductivity and understanding the effect of the TiO 2 structure on Pt electrocatalytic performance for ethanol electro-oxidation reaction (EOR) are major challenges in direct ethanol fuel cells. This study reports an easy and green approach to control the crystal structures of a robust iridium-incorporated TiO 2 nanomaterial and its effect on the Pt electrocatalytic performance for EOR. A green hydrothermal route is used to fabricate iridium-modified TiO 2 nanosupports with different structures by controlling the reaction temperature and time as well as solution pH without using further calcination , followed by the anchoring of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) via a surfactant-free modified reduction route. The experimental results indicate that the pure structure of the iridium-modified TiO 2 nanosupport can easily be obtained by controlling the solution pH. In terms of EOR, all prepared catalysts show more effective performance than the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Among the prepared catalysts, the Pt anchored on the rutile iridium-incorporated TiO 2 exhibits higher EOR performance than on the anatase iridium-incorporated TiO 2 nanosupport, with negative onset potential, high current density, and electrochemical stability. The enhancement is assigned to the great adsorption and desorption ability as well as the high natural resistance to metal NPs ripening on (110) facets of the rutile structure compared with the (101) facets of the anatase structure. This exploration can offer an efficient route for tuning the structure of metal oxides and understanding the effect of the structure of the TiO 2 -based support on the Pt catalytic performance.

Hydrogel Containing Bismuth Molybdate Nanosheets with Piezoelectricity and Nanoenzyme Activity for Promoting Osteoblast Responses

Anqi Song,Xiaodong Qi,Shangyu Xie,Xiaolin Wu,Jie Wei,Yong Dai

The development of piezoelectric biomaterials with the capability to produce electrical signals and scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a novel strategy for stimulating osteoblast responses and promoting bone regeneration. Herein, tungsten (W), iridium (Ir), and ruthenium (Ru) codoped bismuth molybdate (4(W/Ru/Ir)-BMO) nanosheets with improved piezoelectricity and enzyme-like (CAT-like and SOD-like) activities were constructed by using the hydrothermal method. A composite hydrogel of oxidized sodium alginate/gelatin (OSA/GEL) and 4(W/Ru/Ir)-BMO (OSA/GEL/4-B) was also prepared. Due to the presence of 4(W/Ru/Ir)-BMO, OSA/GEL/4-B exhibited not only piezoelectricity but also enzyme-like activities. Under ultrasound (US), OSA/GEL/4-B generated electrical signals that significantly promoted the proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of bone marrow stromal cells. Furthermore, the piezoelectric effect of OSA/GEL/4-B improved the CAT-like (production of oxygen) and SOD-like (scavenger of ROS) activities. The improved piezoelectricity of 4(W/Ru/Ir)-BMO was attributed to the codoping of W, Ir, and Ru ions, which resulted in lattice distortion and enhanced crystal asymmetry, which produced electrical signals for regulating the osteogenic microenvironment. Moreover, the improvement of enzyme-like activities was attributed to the enhanced piezoelectric effect by the codoping of W, Ir, and Ru ions, which generated a piezoelectric field triggered by US that accelerated electron transfer for alleviating cellular oxidative stress and provided an antioxidant microenvironment for osteoblast responses. This piezoelectric hydrogel may provide a novel pathway for promoting osteogenic differentiation and bone regeneration.

Anion-rich Ir-doped CoOx for boosting oxygen evolution reaction in water electrolysis

Wan Rong,Kang Huang,Longlong Dong,Jiuyang Xia,Rui Dang,Yunfei Chen,Jianfei Liu,Qigao Cao,Bowei Zhang,Junsheng Wu

Owing to the sluggish kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in electrochemical water electrolysis process, efficient and durable OER electrocatalysts are crucially needed. However, it is a great challenge to improve the comprehensive performance of OER electrocatalysts by utilizing various synergistic methodologies. To solve these issues, herein, Ir-doped Co-based compounds with regulated anions were synthesized using a coprecipitation method as the electrodes for boosting the OERs. Doping with Ir atoms modified the coordination environments and electronic structures of the CoOx-CO32- lattice, and the generated Co3+ species promoted the generation of active species for the OER. It is worthwhile noting that a hybrid crystalline/amorphous IrCoOx-CO32- compound was obtained with an Ir content of 10.09 wt.% and a large amount of Co3+, and demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic OER performance. The overpotential required for the developed IrCoOx-CO32- to achieve 10 mA cm-2 was as low as 207 mV with a very low Tafel slope of 61.7 mV dec-1, which is better than the commercial IrO2. Furthermore, anions created in the IrCoOx significantly promoted the OER, and their effects were decreased in the order of CO32- > PO43- > OH-. This work clarifies the synergistic mechanism of cations and anions on the electrocatalytic OER performance of Co-based compounds, providing new insights for designs of high-performance OER electrocatalysts for water electrolysis.

Lactic acid responsive sequential production of hydrogen peroxide and consumption of glutathione for enhanced ferroptosis tumor therapy

Weijuan Zou,Feng Gao,Zheying Meng,Xiaojun Cai,Wu Chen,Yuanyi Zheng,Tao Ying,Longchen Wang,Jianrong Wu

Ferroptosis is characterized by the lethal accumulation of lipid reactive oxygen species (ROS), which has great potential for tumor therapy. However, developing new ferroptosis-inducing strategies by combining nanomaterials with small molecule inducers is important. In this study, an enzyme-gated biodegradable natural-product delivery system based on lactate oxidase (LOD)-gated biodegradable iridium (Ir)-doped hollow mesoporous organosilica nanoparticles (HMONs) loaded with honokiol (HNK) (HNK@Ir-HMONs-LOD, HIHL) is designed to enhance ferroptosis in colon tumor therapy. After reaching the tumor microenvironment, the outer LOD dissociates and releases the HNK to induce ferroptosis. Moreover, the released dopant Ir 4+ and disulfide-bridged organosilica frameworks deplete intracellular glutathione (GSH), which is followed by GSH-mediated Ir(IV)/Ir(III) conversion. This leads to the repression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) activity and decomposition of intratumoral hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) into hydroxyl radicals (•OH) by Ir 3+ -mediated Fenton-like reactions. Moreover, LOD efficiently depletes lactic acid to facilitate the generation of H 2 O 2 and boost the Fenton reaction, which in turn enhances ROS generation. With the synergistic effects of these cascade reactions and the release of HNK, notable ferroptosis efficacy was observed both in vitro and in vivo. This combination of natural product-induced and lactic acid-responsive sequential production of H 2 O 2 as well as the consumption of glutathione may provide a new paradigm for achieving effective ferroptosis-based cancer therapy.
