To develop the combustion characteristics of aluminum powder in steam, the ignition and combustion process of aluminum powder with different additives (KBH4, ammonium perchlorate (AP) and NaCl) addition at different levels were studied using a transparent pipe furnace. The temperature variation of these samples was measured using a thermocouple, and a high-speed camera was used to record combustion phenomenon. The solid combustion products of these samples with good characteristics were collected to analyze the microstructure and component. The results indicate that the ignition temperature of aluminum powder is decreased by adding these additives or increasing the content of the additive, whereas the maximum combustion temperature is different. When adding 3 wt% KBH4, the maximum combustion temperature reaches up to 1404 °C, which is higher than that of the original aluminum powder. However, upon addition of AP or NaCl the maximum combustion temperature decreases. Simultaneously, the combustion flame of aluminum powder with addition of KBH4 or AP is comparatively intense and bright, whereas the addition of NaCl reduces combustion intensity. The different influence mechanisms of additives on the ignition and combustion of aluminum powder are believed to be responsible for the experimental results.

Aluminum hydride (AlH3) has attracted much attention due to its potential to replace aluminum (Al) as a novel energetic material in solid propellants. In this research, ammonium perchlorate (AP) and perfluoropolyether (PFPE) as functionalized coatings and a combination of acoustic resonance and spray drying technology have been employed to prepare AlH3@Al@AP (AHAPs) and AlH3@Al@AP@PFPE (AHAPs-F) energetic composite particles. The formulations of composite propellants and modified AlH3 particles were designed and fabricated. Their thermal reactivity, reaction heat, density, vacuum stability, combustion performance, and condensed combustion products (CCPs) have been systematically investigated. The results show that the solid propellants containing AHAPs (SP13) and AHAPs-F (SP14) composites can significantly enhance the reactivity and energy output compared to conventional solid propellants with the mechanical mixture Al/AlH3 (SP12). In particular, the total heat releases of SP13 and SP14 are almost 1.2 and 1.7 times higher than those of conventional ones (SP12, 1442 J g–1), respectively. Among the AlH3-based propellants, SP14 propellants exhibit the highest reaction heat of 5887 J g–1, the most intensive flame radiation of 31.4 × 103, and the highest combustion wave temperature of 2495 °C. Moreover, the particle size distribution of CCPs from SP14 propellants is much narrower and smaller than that of SP12, resulting in higher combustion efficiency.

The development of high-energy ammonium perchlorate (NH 4 ClO 4 , AP)-based energetic materials is of great significance for promoting their potential applications. In this study, AP-based molecular perovskite energetic materials (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] were prepared via molecular assembly strategy with the facile one-pot reaction of AP, HClO 4 and triethylenediamine (dabco). The as-obtained sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR). The thermal decomposition and combustion performance was investigated by thermo-gravimetric/differential scanning calorimeter (TG-DSC), high speed photography and three-dimensional FT-IR. The results showed that combined with the oxidizer perchlorate and fuel dabco at the molecular level, ternary molecular perovskite (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] possessed a more stable thermal decomposition temperature (385.0 °C) than the monocomponent AP and the heat release is also as high as 3421 J g −1 . The thermal decomposition activation energy (181.070 kJ mol −1 ) of thermal decomposition of (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] had been expectably reduced from the activation energy (200.259 kJ mol −1 ) of high-temperature decomposition stage of AP, despite of low-temperature decomposition stage. The synergistic catalysis thermal decomposition mechanism based on the molecular perovskite structures was proposed. And the combustion performance demonstrated molecular perovskite (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ] had a high energy-releasing efficiency. This work provides a proof-of-principle concept for the design and fabrication of high-performance solid propellants based on molecular perovskite (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4 ) 3 ].

Using Al–Mg alloy instead of pure aluminum can improve the agglomeration and combustion characteristics of composite propellants. In this experiment, the effects of oxygen concentration and pressure on the ignition and combustion performance of Al–Mg binary alloy (with a magnesium mass content of 20%) and Al–Mg alloy mixed with ammonium perchlorate (AP) were investigated using a laser ignition test bench. The thermogravimetric results showed that the melting of aluminum, magnesium and intermetallic phases in the alloy powder occurred under argon, producing four heat absorption peaks. Magnesium evaporates at about 580 °C. In air, only one endothermic peak was observed, with oxidation occurring at approximately 510 °C. During the oxidation process, the intermetallic phase decomposes. Laser ignition tests showed that the alloy mainly undergoes gas-phase combustion, exhibiting phenomena such as gas emission, particle fragmentation, and micro-explosions. The introduction of AP promotes ignition and combustion of the alloy, resulting in more intense gas-phase reactions. Both increased pressure and oxygen concentration will promote alloy combustion. There are two reaction zones in the particles during combustion. Filamentary solids were observed in the combustion products of the AP-AM samples, which were primarily the products of the reaction of magnesium with O and Cl.
