Adsorptive separation of dimethyl disulfide from liquefied petroleum gas by different zeolites and selectivity study via FT-IR

Lidan Lv,Jie Zhang,Chongpin Huang,Zhigang Lei,Biaohua Chen

The removal of dimethyl disulfide from model liquefied petroleum gas using metal salt impregnated zeolite as the adsorbent was studied in a fixed-bed adsorption equipment. Effects of different carrier, metal iron species and content of active component, mass space velocity, temperature, as well as adsorption selectivity and regeneration performance were all investigated by performing the breakthrough experiment. Among all these adsorbents, 5   wt.%Ag 2 O/NaY showed the highest breakthrough sulfur capacity. The adsorption selectivity of Ag 2 O/NaY was studied by the infrared spectra. It was found that the direct S–Ag(I) interaction was the essential reason for the evidently improved adsorption ability and selectivity of Ag 2 O/NaY for removing disulfide from solutions containing olefin . Regeneration study indicated that the saturated adsorbent was regenerated under the temperature of 550   °C for 8   h in the air atmosphere. After five times regeneration, the adsorbent Ag 2 O/NaY still shows high breakthrough sulfur capacity.

Robust super hydrophobic cotton fabrics functionalized with Ag and PDMS for effective antibacterial activity and efficient oil–water separation

Hao Wen,Saleem Raza,Ping Wang,Ziyi Zhu,Jiayan Zhang,Wei Huang,Lizhu Liang,Hao Hu,Libo Deng,Changkun Liu

The development of multifunctional super hydrophobic cotton materials for oil–water separation and biological activities has attracted significant research interest. In the present study, a robust, fluorine-free, durable and recyclable modified cotton fabric was created by graft polymerization and coating techniques . The surface was grafted with poly(glycidyl methacrylate) (PGMA), subsequently aminated with diethylenetriamine (DETA), and then immobilized with Ag to obtain CF@GMA@DETA(Ag). Moreover, Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) was coated on CF@GMA@DETA(Ag) for super hydrophobicity to obtain the modified cotton fabrics (CF@GMA@DETA(Ag)/PDMS). The water contact angle (WCA) reached 155° ± 1.5°. The modified cotton material had excellent oil–water separation efficiency. Meanwhile, the modified cotton material also has outstanding recyclability and stability. With Ag modification, the modified cotton material also showed impressive antibacterial properties. Furthermore, oil–water separation efficiency was generally higher than 97% in artificial seawater, which offers a possible application to separate oil and water in seawater. These properties render the as-prepared cotton fabric a promising material with potential applications.

Piezo-catalytic persulfate activation system for water advanced disinfection: Process efficiency and inactivation mechanisms

Dehua Xia,Zhuoyun Tang,Yunchen Wang,Ran Yin,Huanjunwa He,Xi Xie,Jianliang Sun,Chun He,Po Keung Wong,Guan Zhang

This study developed a novel method based on piezoelectric catalytic persulfate (PS) activation for water advanced disinfection. Silver modified barium titanate (Ag-BTO) was synthesized and utilized as a piezoelectric catalyst to activate PS under ultrasonic vibration (US) for Escherichia coli inactivation. The newly developed US/Ag-BTO/PS process achieved a 6.2 log inactivation within 5 min and 20 min, respectively, for E. coli at culturable state and viable but nonculturable (VBNC) state. The high efficiency on E. coli inactivation was contributed by the successive generation of hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals via PS activation by piezo-catalytically generated electrons and superoxide radicals. Interestingly and more importantly, a synergism between ultrasonication and radical oxidation was found by using the US/Ag-BTO/PS process for E. coli inactivation. The ultrasonication disrupted cell membrane of E. coli , accelerated the permeation of the radicals and enhanced the following inner metabolic dysfunction and enzyme oxidation by radicals. The catalyst maintained a good stability and reusability, and the efficacy of the new disinfection strategy was also demonstrated in real wastewater effluent and surface water. The findings in this study suggest the merit of using the US/Ag-BTO/PS process for water advanced disinfection and provide an alternative solution in addressing the issue of microbial resurrection after conventional water disinfection treatment.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based lateral flow immunoassay mediated by hydrophilic-hydrophobic Ag-modified PMMA substrate

Siqi Tang,Hongmei Liu,Yiran Tian,Dong Chen,Chenjie Gu,Guodong Wei,Tao Jiang,Jun Zhou

Recently, it is urgent to ameliorate the accumulation and quantification performances of surface-enhanced Raman scattering-based lateral flow immunoassay (SERS-based LFIA) to promote its reliable clinical application. Herein, a smart hydrophilic-hydrophobic SERS-based LFIA strip was demonstrated by decorating Ag nanoplates with hydrophilic surface onto the specific regions of hydrophobic polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) film with Raman internal standard (IS), which can unexpectedly inhibit the “coffee-ring phenomenon”. The target analytes were consequently enriched in the SERS-active Ag regions by the hydrophobic PMMA, considerably endowing the strip with amended quantitative monitoring ability. Aided by immunoprobes of flower-shaped Ag nanoplates, a limit of detection as 10 pg/mL and an outstanding correlation coefficient value (R 2 ) of 0.992 for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) were obtained by utilizing this SERS-based LFIA strip, which can be conducive to clinical monitoring and will broaden the field of vision for the point-of-care diagnostic technique.

Dynamic Migration of Ag Efficiently Modulated Electronic Structure and Impressed Chlorine Corrosion of NiFe-LDH for Seawater Oxidation

Yongping Qu,Huajun Zhou,Yuzhen Zhang,Peihua Zhao,Kai Yuan,Rui Zhou,Hui Gao,Yanzhong Wang

Seawater electrolysis is a promising route for hydrogen production. However, the elevated concentration of Cl − in seawater can cause the serious corrosion of electrode materials, which limits the large-scale application of seawater splitting for the generation of green hydrogen. Herein, nickel iron layered double hydroxide@Ag/iron foam (NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF) composites are synthesized using a two-step method at room temperature. The introduction of Ag not only induces the electron density redistribution of NiFe-LDH to promote the formation of NiFeOOH as the catalytically active sites, but also impress the corrosion of chloride ions during the seawater oxidation. The as-prepared NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF only requires a low overpotential of 255 mV at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution, and it can stably operate for 1000 h without degradation. Importantly, the formed AgCl nanoparticles loaded on the surface of NiFe-LDH nanosheets can effectively prevent the corrosive effect of Cl − during the seawater oxidation process. Thus, NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF can maintain high catalytic activity and work stably for 1000 h at high current density of 500 mA cm −2 for seawater oxidation. This study presents a simple method for preparing self-supported electrocatalysts with excellent corrosion resistance and high catalytic activity in alkaline seawater oxidation.
