Efficient silver ion sensor based on bromine doped red emitting carbon dots

Jin Liu,Xiangyong Meng,Yang Song,Qiang Jing,Haiguang Zhao

Carbon dots (CDs), as an emerging class of fluorescent nanomaterials, have garnered considerable attention due to their excellent optical properties, biocompatibility, environmental friendliness, leading to wide applications including optoelectronic devices, bioimaging, and catalysis. However, it is still a challenge to design and synthesize CDs with the presence of bromine for precise Ag + detection. In this study, bromine doped red emitting carbon dots (Br-RCDs) with a high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 23.04% were successfully synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal method using 3-bromo-1,2-phenylenediamine as precursor. As bromine is in the ortho-position of the precursor, it can be well retained during the reaction. The presence of bromine on the surface of Br-RCDs enhanced their interaction with Ag + , endowing them with exceptional sensitivity (linear range: 0–17.5 μM) and selectivity (detection limit: 0.116 μM) for Ag + detection, which are better than most of the reported CDs, especially in the red emission range. This work highlights the importance of surface functionalization in the design and synthesis of CDs for ion detection, paving the way for the development of highly selective and sensitive probes.

Kinetic, Isotherm, and Thermodynamic Studies for Ag(I) Adsorption Using Carboxymethyl Functionalized Poly(glycidyl methacrylate)

Jiling Zhao,Shixing Wang,Libo Zhang,Chen Wang,Bing Zhang

Industrial wastewater contains large amounts of silver ions. Here, a new adsorbent was synthesized by functionalizing poly(glycidyl methacrylate) with carboxymethyl groups. The adsorbent was used to recover Ag(I) in wastewater. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, zeta potential, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the adsorbent. The experimental parameters affecting the adsorption are solution pH, contact time, and initial silver ion concentration. The optimum pH for adsorption of Ag(I) is pH 4. The maximum adsorption capacity at pH 4 is 157.05 mg/g, and the adsorption reaches equilibrium at 300 min. The kinetics and isotherms of the adsorption process were described by pseudo second-order, Langmuir and D-R models, respectively. The adsorption process was a single layer chemical adsorption, exothermic, feasible, and spontaneous. The adsorption mechanism is electrostatic or chelation. The adsorbent selectively absorbed Ag(I) from coexisting ions (Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Zn2+). Finally, the removal rate of silver ions decreased from 79.29% to 65.01% after four repetitive experiments, which proved that the adsorbent had good reusability. The adsorbent has great potential benefit in removing Ag(I).Keywords:polymer;Ag (I), removal;mechanism;adsorption

Metal copper and silver revealed potent antimicrobial activity for treating Caenorhabditis elegans infected with carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumonia

Ling Cao,Lili Tan,Liping Li

Objectives: The increasing issue of bacterial resistance, coupled with inadequate progress in developing new antibiotics, necessitates exploring alternative treatments. Antibacterial biomaterials, such as silver and copper, possess advantageous properties such as heat resistance, durability, continuity, and safety. Particularly, they can effectively eliminate pathogenic bacteria while preserving cellular integrity, emphasizing the necessity of identifying optimal metal ion concentrations for practical application. Caenorhabditis elegans ( C. elegans ) can serve as a noteworthy model in this context. This study employed a C. elegans infection model to assess the efficacy of antibacterial metal ions. Methods: Hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) assay were utilized to determine the toxic levels of metal ions in mice. Additionally, RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) and assessment of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in the C. elegans model were conducted to elucidate the mechanisms underlying metal ion toxicity. Results: Silver ion concentrations ranging from 10 -6 to 10 -7 M and copper ion concentrations ranging from 10 -4 to 10 -5 M exhibited antimicrobial properties without eliciting cytotoxic effects. Analysis of the transcriptome data derived from mRNA isolated from C. elegans indicated that CRKP infection activated the FoxO signaling pathway, potentially leading to ROS accumulation and C. elegans demise. Conclusions: In conclusion, C. elegans serves as a comprehensive infection model for assessing antibacterial metal ions.

Carboxymethyl cellulose and sodium alginate-enhanced hydrogel for carbon dots loading: A novel platform for pH sensing and sensitive detection of Al3+ and Ag+

Miaomiao Chen,Meng Zhou,Yunyun Wang,Caihong Mao,Shujie Pang,Ting Meng,Xudong Yang

To address the challenges associated with the storage and application of traditional carbon dot (CDs) solutions, this study introduces a cyan fluorescent carbon dot-based hydrogel (CDs-SCH). The hydrogel was synthesized by integrating cyan fluorescent CDs, derived from penicillamine and m -phenylenediamine, with carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and sodium alginate (SA), which was then mixed with acrylamide (AM). The resulting CDs-SCH hydrogel was extensively characterized, focusing on its morphology, chemical structure, and fluorescence behavior. The fluorescence intensity of the hydrogel was enhanced by 3.23 times compared to the original CDs. The fluorescence response of the CDs-SCH hydrogel to pH variations was examined, demonstrating its capability to visually monitor the freshness of aquatic products such as fish and shrimp. Furthermore, Al 3+ and Ag + ions were found to significantly modulate the fluorescence, with Al 3+ enhancing and Ag + quenching the fluorescence, displaying reliable detection limits and linearity. The hydrogel's ability to detect glutathione (GSH) via Ag + reduction to Ag was also explored. Additionally, the hydrogel exhibited stable Al 3+ adsorption, with the process following pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir adsorption model. As a versatile and responsive material, the CDs-SCH hydrogel holds potential for applications in intelligent food packaging and environmental ion detection.

Extraction of squalene from camellia oil by silver ion complexation

H. Xiao,Z. Yao,Q. Peng,F. Ni,Y. Sun,C.X. Zhang,Z.X. Zhong

Separation of squalene, a type of terpenoid hydrocarbons with important biological properties, from camellia oil by silver ion complexation was studied. We showed that the UV–visible absorption wavelength of squalene in AgNO 3 -methanol solution was obviously red-shifted, and the infra-red vibration wavelength of C C bond slightly decreased, indicating that complexation between squalene and Ag + took place. The distributions of squalene in AgNO 3 methanol solution/petroleum ether under different conditions were further investigated. We found that the fraction of squalene in AgNO 3 -methanol phase was enhanced with increased percentage of methanol and AgNO 3 concentration and decreased extraction temperature. The distribution coefficient of squalene was up to 7.87 under optimum extraction conditions with 70% methanol (v/v), 0.6   mol/L AgNO 3 , reaction time of 12   h, and at the temperature of 0   °C. Furthermore, under the optimum conditions, extraction of squalene from the unsaponifiable portion of camellia oil exhibited high selectivity with a raffinate rate and a back-extraction rate of 73.9% and 72.5%, respectively. The purity of extracted squalene was 37.8%, 108   times more concentrated than that in the starting material.

Selective Adsorption of Ag+ on a New Cyanuric-Thiosemicarbazide Chelating Resin with High Capacity from Acid Solutions

Guo Lin,Shixing Wang,Libo Zhang,Tu Hu,Jinhui Peng,Song Cheng,Likang Fu

A new cyanuric-thiosemicarbazid (TSC-CC) chelating resin was synthesized and employed to selectively adsorb Ag+from acid solutions. The effects of acid concentration, initial concentration of Ag+, contact time and coexisting ions were investigated. The optimal acid concentration was 0.5 mol/L. The adsorption capacity of Ag+reached 872.63 mg/g at acid concentration of 0.5 mol/L. The adsorption isotherm was fitted well with the Langmuir isotherm model and the kinetic data preferably followed the pseudo-second order model. The chelating resin showed a good selectivity for the Ag+adsorption from acid solutions. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectrometer (SEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to study the adsorption mechanism. The chelating and ionic interaction was mainly adsorption mechanism. The adsorbent presents a great potential in selective recovery Ag+from acid solutions due to the advantage of high adsorption capacity and adapting strongly acidic condition. The recyclability indicated that the (TSC-CC) resin had a good stability and can be recycled as a promising agent for removal of Ag+.Keywords:chelating resin;silver ions;selectivity;adsorption;mechanism

A reliable fluorescent and colorimetric dual-readout assay for Ag+ tracing

Xinke Wang,Xia Gao,Xiaodong Lin,Shuo Zheng,Yong Yan,Shuo Wang,Yaqing Liu

Silver ion pollution is a great threat to global environment and public healthcare today. Thus, quick, portable and sensitive assays for Ag + tracing are highly needed. Herein, a reliable fluorescent and colorimetric dual-channel assay has been constructed for Ag + detection by utilizing a terbium-based fluorescent nanomaterial (named as Tb-DPA) and a Pt/Pd nanoflower (Pt/Pd NF)-triggered reaction between N-ethyl-N-(3-sulfopropyl)-3-methylaniline sodium salt (TOPS) and 4-amino-antipyrine (4-AAP). Initially, in the sensing system containing 4-AAP, TOPS, Tb-DPA and Pt/Pd NF, TOPS and 4-AAP is catalyzed by Pt/Pd NF to produce a purple compound (called as PC1), which endows a broad UV absorption that can fully cover the emission band of Tb-DPA. Thus, the system exhibits a high UV absorption (originating from PC1) and a low fluorescence intensity (originating from Tb-DPA) which has been quenched by PC1 through a filtering effect. However, when the system meets Ag + , the oxidase-like activity of Pt/Pd NF will be inhibited, leading less amount of PC1. As a result, the system exhibits a decreased UV absorption and a recovered fluorescence intensity, both of which can be used for Ag + detection, reporting low detection limits of 3.63 nM and 1.63 nM, respectively. Specially, results from the dual-channel assay can mutually validate each other, improving the detection reliability. Moreover, this dual-mode assay shows good capability toward Ag + detection in real samples, illustrating the potential for practical applications.

Dual-modal fluorescence and light-scattering sensor based on water-soluble carbon dots for silver ions detection

Guoliang Liu,Chenglei Xuan,Da-Qian Feng,Dongliang Hua,Tianhao Liu,Gang Qi,Wei Wang

A facile fluorometric and light-scattering dual-modal nanosensor for silver(I) ions detection was established based on target-responsive aggregation of carbon dots/cysteine system. The synthesized water-soluble fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) by the one-pot hydrothermal method exhibited emissions peak at 441 nm under excitation at 352 nm. CDs fluorescence was quenched by Ag+via electron transfer, while the light-scattering intensity of CDs was significantly enhanced, providing a dual-modal means of analyte Ag+ detection. The relative fluorescence intensity is directly proportional to the concentration of Ag+ between 0.1 μM and 265 μM, and the detection limit is 50 nM. Moreover, the relative light-scattering intensity is proportional to the concentration of Ag+ from 10 to 4000 nM with the detection limit 2 nM. Common compounds including different types of metal ions had no significant interference in the detection mode. The new nanosensor was simple, rapid and sensitive and was applied to the detection of Ag+ in real water samples with satisfactory results. Moreover, the present CDs-based dual-modal sensor provided a promising platform for environmental sensing applications.

Electrochemical detection of silver ions by using sulfur quantum dots modified gold electrode

Li Fu,Aiwu Wang,Kefeng Xie,Jiangwei Zhu,Fei Chen,Henggang Wang,Huaiwei Zhang,Weitao Su,Zhenguang Wang,Cangtao Zhou,Shuangchen Ruan

Sensitive and low-cost determination of Ag + is important due to the potential risk of Ag + increasingly applied in various fields. In this work, we report an extremely simple electrochemical sensor for the Ag + determination based on the sulfur quantum dots (SQDs) modified Au electrode. The SQDs were synthesized by a top-down method through alkali etching of bulk sulfur powder, which were then directly used for Au electrode surface modification due to the high affinity between Au and S atoms. The strong binding between Ag and S makes the modified electrode highly sensitive for Ag + sensing. The theoretical investigation was carried out by calculating the bond length and binding strength between Ag and S. Since the non-conductive nature of the SQDs, the amount of modifier is a crucial factor for the sensing performance. Under optimum condition, the proposed sensor showed a linear detection range of 0.1 nM to 3 μM with a detection limit of 71 pM.

Ag-Ion Dynamics in the Low-Temperature Form of Ag2S as Studied by Impedance Spectroscopy

Zhijie Chen,Chao Wang,Ji Yu,Xingming Yang,Xibin Xu,Min Gu

In this study, Ag2S samples are characterized using X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and impedance spectroscopy. At 447 K, an AC conductivity jump of about two orders of magnitude is observed, and an endothermic peak is measured by differential scanning calorimetry, apparently resulting from the β-to-α phase transition, i.e., the order–disorder transition. A silver vacancy proportion of 2.2% is obtained by refinement of the X-ray diffraction profile. The dielectric loss peaks and analysis of the observed complex impedance peaks indicate four different relaxation processes, namely, P1, P2, P3, and P4, from low to high temperature. P1 and P2 are obviously the migration of silver ions from two types of lattice sites to their nonequivalent nearest-neighbor vacancies. P3 involves the migration of interstitial silver ions to adjacent interstitial sites. An Arrhenius-to-VFTH crossover of the P4 relaxation time is inferred to the hopping of the individual silver ion and then the cooperative jumps of several ions in the disordered region of the silver sublattice upon heating.

Efficient removal of radioactive iodide from contaminated seawater by radiation-resistant Ag+-doping polypropylene nonwoven adsorbents

Xiao-han Pan,Ming-Jie Jin,Jian-hua Zu,Gang Han,Jing-jie Diao,Si-yu Liu,Qing Tang

For the efficient removal of radioactive iodide ions from medium and low radioactive contaminated water, an Ag-doped adsorbent was designed via radiation grafting method and chemical modification and applied based on the solid–liquid adsorption method. The silver loading content in the adsorbents could be flexibly decided by adjusting the sulfhydryl content. SEM/EDS, ATR, XPS, and XRD characterization methods were used to determine the features of the new adsorbents. With the silver content 67.9 mg/g and 125.6 mg/g in the adsorbents PGM25%-Ag + and PGM220%-Ag + respectively, the maximum I − adsorption capacities were varied at 29.92 mg/g and 100.82 mg/g. In wide pH conditions (pH7-11), PGM25%-Ag + was sufficient to achieve 131 I removal efficiency of over 92 %, and the removal efficiency was almost unaffected in the coexistence of high concentration (10 mmol/L) of anions and complex real contaminated seawater, highlighting the applicability and selectivity of the adsorbent. The adsorption behavior conformed to the Langmuir isothermal model and pseudo-second-order kinetics model. XPS analysis confirmed that excellent adsorption capacity and selectivity were attributed to the chemical adsorption mechanism of ion exchange and complexation occurs between I − and Ag on the solid–liquid interface, where AgI precipitation formed. In addition, the Ag + -doping adsorbent withstood the harsh conditions of 200 kGy irradiation by observing the ATR structure, thermal stability, and 131 I removal property. This study provides a feasible solution for the treatment of low and medium-radioactive contaminated seawater.

Effects of different substrates on the adsorption behavior of supported-adsorbents: A case study of MoS2 for Ag+ adsorption

Wenbin Hu,Ziwen Chang,Aiping Tang,Yun Wei,Difan Fang,Xiang Lu,Penghui Shao,Hui Shi,Kai Yu,Xubiao Luo,Liming Yang

Supported-adsorbents growing on the substrate in situ are equipped with the advantages of high adsorption capacity, excellent regeneration performance, and adaptability to complex wastewater. However, the effects of substrate on the adsorption properties of supported-adsorbent are rarely considered, which will hinder its development and scale-up applications. In this study, the influences of different substrates (Ti, Mo, W, CC) on the Ag + adsorption behavior of supported-MoS 2 adsorbents were investigated. The adsorption kinetics , adsorption mechanism, and the renewability of these supported-MoS 2 were compared orderly. As a result, MoS 2 grown on a tungsten substrate (MoS 2 –W) exhibits a remarkable adsorption capacity for Ag + (1.98 mg cm −2 and 598.80 mg g −1 ), which is 6.38–33 times more than the other three supported-MoS 2 . Moreover, the MoS 2 –W also possesses an ultrahigh distribution coefficient (24.80 mL cm −2 ) for Ag + , and the selection coefficient can reach 1984. XRD and electrochemical characterization analysis indicated that Ag + adsorption performance of supported-MoS 2 is positively correlated with the degree of its amorphous structure. Substrate W with the terrific electrical properties which may facilitate the disordered growth of MoS 2 , resulting in more active sites exposed, and endow MoS 2 –W with outstanding Ag + capture performance. Finally, the supported-MoS 2 retains a high removal efficiency of Ag +  after 5 cycles of adsorption and desorption. This study provides a novel perspective for promoting the practical application of supported-sorbents to recycle heavy metals.
