TaC enhancement particles and Re alloy were used to improve the strength and ductility of the tungsten alloy. The synergetic effect of TaC addition and Re alloying on relative density, microstructure, and mechanical properties of tungsten alloy were investigated. The results indicated that a W-based composite with 2.5 wt% TaC addition and 25 wt% Re alloying exhibited yield stress of 1.23 GPa, the ultimate compressive stress of 2.86 GPa, bending strength of 1.30 GPa and strain capacity of 42 %, which was increased by 114 %, 140 %, 226 %, and 133 % than those of pure W. Further analysis revealed that the grain boundary purification, grain refinement, and kinematic strain gradient contribution because of the addition of TaC, lattice distortion, and the generation of dislocations because of the addition of Re alloying are the main strengthening mechanisms in W–TaC-Re composite.

In this study, Re alloying and self-generated hard phase enhancement were used to improve the strength and toughness of W. The arc-melting W-based composite with 10 wt% Re and 1 wt% SiC addition is composed of toughening W-Re matrix and ceramic particles (W 2 C and W 5 Si 3 ). This composite having high strain capacity (37.1%) at room temperature (more than 5 times of W), exhibits the excellent hardness (5.04 GPa), yield strength (0.92 GPa) and fracture strength (1.78 GPa) due to the synergetic mechanism, grain refinement, and good interfaces bonding state. The synergetic mechanism of Re and SiC addition on strength and toughness was proposed.

Ductilization and suppression of annealing-induced embrittlement have become the critical premises for various structural applications of high-strength tungsten materials but have yielded few practical advances. Here, we successfully fabricated W–Re and nano-particle doped W-Re-ZrC alloys with a combination of desirable ductility and a high tensile strength above 1.3 GPa by powder metallurgy plus hot swaging. Specifically, the W–Re and W-Re-ZrC alloys exhibit total elongations of 31.6% and 16.1%, respectively, at room temperature. Upon high-temperature annealing at 1600 °C, the W-Re-ZrC alloy still retains a high total elongation of 12.9% and a high tensile strength of over 1.3 GPa, unlike the W–Re alloy, which exhibits substantial losses of ductility and strength. Microstructure analysis reveals that a large amount of low-angle grain boundaries and high-density mobile dislocations are responsible for ductilization. Meanwhile, ZrC nano-particles stabilize low-angle grain boundaries and dislocation structures at elevated temperatures, suppressing annealing-induced embrittlement in the W-Re-ZrC alloy. The present work provides a promising methodology for manufacturing bulk high-strength tungsten materials with favorable room-temperature ductility and high resistance to catastrophic failure during long-term service.

Herein, TiO 2 supported Ni–Re alloy catalysts (i.e., NiRe(x:y)/TiO 2 , x:y denotes the Ni/Re atomic ratio) were prepared and tested for in situ deoxygenation of methyl palmitate to hydrocarbons in aqueous phase using methanol as hydrogen donor. Raman spectra indicates that there is interaction between NiO and ReO 4 − species via forming Ni–O-Re(=O) 3 species in the calcined catalysts, which contributes to the formation of Ni–Re alloy and promotes the Ni dispersion during the reduction with H 2 . Particularly, the Ni–Re alloy particles with average size of ∼1.4 nm highly disperse on spherical TiO 2 particles (∼14 nm in diameter) in NiRe(3:4)/TiO 2 (the nominal Ni content of 3 wt %). XPS reveals a charge transfer from metallic Ni to Re in the Ni–Re alloy. In in situ deoxygenation of methyl palmitate, compared with Ni/TiO 2 , NiRe(x:y)/TiO 2 give remarkably higher deoxygenation activity and lower activity for the C–C bond hydrogenolysis , ascribed to the synergistic effect between Ni and Re species and the geometrical effect of Re, respectively, which are further verified by propanoic acid-TPD and TPSR. The yield of C 6 ∼C 16 liquid hydrocarbons can achieve as high as 98.0% on NiRe(3:4)/TiO 2 at 330 °C. There is no obvious sintering of Ni–Re alloy and support TiO 2 particles during the recycling of NiRe(3:4)/TiO 2 , while the carbon deposition and the leaching of Re species slightly reduce the catalyst activity.

Bulk W-0.5 wt%ZrC (W-ZrC), W-1 wt%Re-0.5 wt%ZrC (W-1Re-ZrC), and W-3 wt%Re-0.5 wt%ZrC (W-3Re-ZrC) alloys were prepared and exposed to He 2+ ion irradiation with an incident energy of 500 keV at 400 °C. Post-irradiation analysis revealed the formation of He bubbles, with consistent number density and average size across all alloys. However, the W-3Re-ZrC alloy exhibited a notably higher density of dislocation loops within grain interiors compared to W-ZrC and W-1Re-ZrC. This led to a significant increase in the hardening rate of W-3Re-ZrC to 61.5 %, nearly twice that of the other alloys. By considering the binding energies of He-vacancy, He-He, and Re-He, the formation and growth behavior of irradiation-induced defects, including He bubbles and dislocation loops, were also discussed. This work provides valuable insight into the relationships among Re alloying, He-induced defects, and irradiation hardening in Re-alloyed W materials, thus offering valuable guidance for the design of W-based plasma-facing materials.

W-Re-HfC alloys have been extensively applied in the field of high-temperature structural parts. To ensure high temperature reliability, it is essential to enhance creep resistance ability. In this study, the microstructures of forged W-Re-HfC alloys were adjusted using different heat treatment processes . The corresponding tensile creep properties were also measured at 2000 °C with 40 MPa. Furthermore, a possible creep fracture mechanism was also explored. The forged W-Re-HfC sample annealed for 2 h exhibited the best creep performances with a steady-state creep rate of 3.28 × 10 −6 and a creep life of 5.6 h. Generally, a larger grain size indicates a lower steady-state creep rate; however, the precipitation of carbides at the grain boundaries (GBs) deteriorates the bonding strength of interfaces, thus reversing the former trend. The dominant creep mechanism is diffusion creep , in which the voids nucleate perpendicular to the GBs, grow and connect into cracks, ultimately leading to fractures.

Due to its high thermal conductivity and favorable machinability, molybdenum–rhenium (Mo–Re) alloys have huge prospects in the field of high-temperature heat pipes. However, the weldability of Mo–Re alloys has not yet been systematically investigated. Based on an orthogonal test, the influence law of the single-mode fiber laser welding parameters on the weld profile and the mechanical properties of the joints was studied. Furthermore, the existence mode and the distribution law of Re in the fusion zone (FZ) were explored using X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and the electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) system. The results showed that weld penetration and width are most significantly influenced by power, and that these increased with increasing power. The tensile strength of the Mo–Re alloy joints reached 250 MPa, and no obvious hardening was found in the FZ. Re in the FZ also appeared as ReO2, ReO3, and ReC, apart from the atomic state. Keywords:molybdenum–rhenium alloy;single-mode fiber laser;X-ray photoelectron spectrometer;electron backscattered diffraction
