Chemical lithiation methodology enabled Prussian blue as a Li-rich cathode material for secondary Li-ion batteries

Chen Wu,Jieming Hu,Hanxian Chen,Chengyi Zhang,Mingli Xu,Lin Zhuang,Xinping Ai,Jiangfeng Qian

Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) have been attracting intense attention owing to its two-electron storage capability and considerable cost advantage, especially in Na-ion and K-ion batteries. However, things are quite different when it comes to Li-ion batteries, because lithium-containing Li 4 Fe(CN) 6 precursor is not commercially available and thus the traditionally prepared Li-deficient FeFe(CN) 6 products fail to couple with commercial graphite anode for full cells. Herein, we put forward a potential matching principle to guide the chemical pre-lithiation of FeFe(CN) 6 into a Li-rich Li x FeFe(CN) 6 ( x varies from 0 to 2) cathode. The potential matching principle was convincingly confirmed by theoretical analysis and over-lithiation experiments. Perylene-Li reagent was elaborately screened to serve as both Li + and electron donor for controllable chemical lithiation reaction while preserving the host framework stable. Our work provided a general guiding principle and effective methodology for controllable synthesis of Prussian blue analogues in gradient lithiation depth, which could be served as a platform for in-depth, systematic and comprehensive research on the properties of PBAs materials.

Surplus energy utilization of spent lithium-ion batteries for high-profit organolithiums

Jian Lu,Yun Zhao,Yuqiong Kang,Chenglei Li,Yawen Liu,Liguang Wang,Hao Du,Meicen Fan,Yunan Zhou,John Wozny,Tao Li,Naser Tavajohi,Feiyu Kang,Baohua Li

It is challenging to efficiently and economically recycle many lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of the low valuation of commodity metals and materials, such as LiFePO 4 . There are millions of tons of spent LIBs where the barrier to recycling is economical, and to make recycling more feasible, it is required that the value of the processed recycled material exceeds the value of raw commodity materials. The presented research illustrates improved profitability and economics for recycling spent LIBs by utilizing the surplus energy in lithiated graphite to drive the preparation of organolithiums to add value to the recycled lithium materials. This study methodology demonstrates that the surplus energy of lithiated graphite obtained from spent LIBs can be utilized to prepare high-value organolithiums, thereby significantly improving the economic profitability of LIB recycling. Organolithiums (R–O–Li and R–Li) were prepared using alkyl alcohol (R–OH) and alkyl bromide (R–Br) as substrates, where R includes varying hindered alkyl hydrocarbons. The organolithiums extracted from per kilogram of recycled LIBs can increase the economic value between $29.5 and $226.5 kg −1 cell. The value of the organolithiums is at least 5.4 times the total theoretical value of spent materials, improving the profitability of recycling LIBs over traditional pyrometallurgical ($0.86 kg −1 cell), hydrometallurgical ($1.00 kg −1 cell), and physical direct recycling methods ($5.40 kg −1 cell).

An in situ constructed Li+-Conductive interphase enables high-capacity and high-rate SiOx/C anode

Zhaoyu Zhang,Yufei Zhang,Minghui Ye,Yongchao Tang,Xiaoqing Liu,Cheng Chao Li

SiO x /C composites are highly potential anode alternatives for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their low cost and high theoretical capacity. However, the sluggish lithium-ion diffusion kinetics severely limit their practical capacity and rate performance. Herein, a high-capacity and high-rate anode based on commercial SiO x /C is facilely achieved by in situ constructing a Li + conductive interphase (LCI) to simultaneously boost the transport efficacy of Li + ions and buffer the volume expansion. The as-designed, LCI-protected SiO x /C anode delivers an exceptionally high capacity of 1420.9 mAh g −1 at 0.2 A g −1 , excellent rate performance (91.4% capacity retention from 0.2 A g −1 to 1 A g −1 ) and long cycling stability, substantially outstripping the pristine SiO x /C counterpart and most recently reported Si-based electrodes. More importantly, taking advantages of the fast and stable lithiation/delithiation processes, this electrode can also be adapted to further applications at large current densities (766.44 mAh g −1 at 5 A g −1 ) or high mass loadings (5.02 mAh cm −2 at 0.1 A g −1 , ∼3.5 mg cm −2 ). A full battery with satisfactory electrochemical performance is also demonstrated. The strategy of building ion conductive interphase to subtly tailor the transport behavior of Li + ions is anticipated to unlock the practical deployment of Si-based LIBs.

Cost-effective recycling of spent LiMn2O4 cathode via a chemical lithiation strategy

Chen Wu,Mingli Xu,Chengyi Zhang,Lang Ye,Kanglong Zhang,Hengjiang Cong,Lin Zhuang,Xinping Ai,Hanxi Yang,Jiangfeng Qian

The global lithium-ion battery recycling market is witnessing rapid growth considering the limited mineral resources and environmental sustainability. However, the conventional destructive recycling technology, mainly referred as pyrometallurgy and hydrometallurgy, cannot show obvious advantages in the recovering of low-value cathode (i.e. LiMn 2 O 4, abbreviated as LMO), either judged from the perspective of environment or economy. Herein, we develop a facile and cost-effective chemical lithiation strategy to direct regenerate spent LMO cathode, and further investigate the efficacy of our technology for industrial-scale applications. Pyrene-Li compound, a highly reductive reagent capable of donating both e − and Li + , is adopted as the chemical lithiation agent to heal the Li deficiency in the degraded LMO cathode. Both the Li-deficient LMO model compounds prepared from acid delithiation method and the real degraded LMO harvested from commercial cells can be restored as original with comparable long-term stability as the pristine LMO cathode and even superior rate capability. Life-cycle analysis demonstrates that our approach is superior to conventional metallurgies because of its high economic profitability (2.78 $/kg cell) and minimal environmental impact (527 g GHG /kg cell), thus providing a brand new perspective for the recycling of low-value cathodes.

Dynamic processes in Si and Si/C anodes in lithium-ion batteries during cycling

Zheng-Guang Hu,Zhi-Yuan Tan,Zhong Lin,Jun Chen,Fang Sun,Xuyao Tang,Rui-Ting Zheng,Yong-Chong Chen,Guo-An Cheng

Si is one of the most attractive anode materials because of its extremely high theoretical capacity. In this study, we find that the (111) plane of crystalline Si in the anode is still present after 100   cycles and infer that it is the intercalation site of Li + ions. We believe that Li + ions are inserted into the tetrahedral sites of crystalline Si, and the (111) plane of Si collapses; meanwhile, expansion parallel to 〈220〉 crystal orientation occurs. After full lithiation , the crystalline Si is converted to amorphous silicon . In a Si/ composite anode, although the addition of amorphous carbon may improve the cycling performance of Si anode, the activation process is prolonged as the amount of amorphous carbon increased. We determine that amorphous carbon may reduce the diffusion of Li + , which increases the overpotential and results in the lower formation of the saturated Li/Si alloy.

A Scalable Cathode Chemical Prelithiation Strategy for Advanced Silicon-Based Lithium Ion Full Batteries

Zongzhe Liu,Shaobo Ma,Xue Mu,Renlong Li,Geping Yin,Pengjian Zuo

A silicon anode with ultra-high specific capacity has motivated tremendous exploration for high-energy-density lithium ion batteries while it still faces serious issues of irreversible lithium loss, unstable electrode electrolyte interface (SEI), and huge volume expansion. Prelithiation is a crucial technology to alleviate the harm of active lithium loss of silicon-based full-cell systems. Herein, we reported a cathode prelithiation method using Li2S-PAN as a lithium “donor”, which was synthesized via chemical reaction between sulfurized polyacrylonitrile and Li-biphenyl complex. The Li2S-PAN with an initial charging capacity of 668 mAh g–1 (2.5–4.0 V) is loaded on the LiFePO4 electrode, and the LiFePO4/Li2S-PAN composite electrode displays a high initial charge capacity of 206 mAh g–1, which is 22.3% higher than the pristine LiFePO4. With a silicon/graphite/carbon (Si/G/C) composite anode, the Si/G/C||LiFePO4/Li2S-PAN full cell exhibits a reversible capacity of 123 and 107 mAh g–1 in the 1st and 10th cycle, which is 15.5 and 24.5% higher than the Si/G/C||LiFePO4 battery, respectively. The SEI layer of the silicon anode in the Si/G/C||LiFePO4/Li2S-PAN cell contains abundant conductive LiF species, which can enhance the interfacial stability and reaction kinetics of the cells. The proposed cathode prelithiation process is compatible with the industrial roll-to-roll electrode preparation process, exhibiting a promising application prospect.

Controllably elevating the initial Coulombic efficiency of Li3VO4 anode via a facile electrode pre-lithiation technique for lithium-ion batteries

Liang Haoyue,Zhong Xingguo,Huang Guxin,Liu Wenpan,Liu Yao,Wang Shuhao,Wang Deyu,Liu Hao,Wang Hao,Zhai Tianyou,Li Huiqiao

Li 3 VO 4 has been a promising insertion anode material for Li-ion batteries, which has high theoretical capacity (up to ∼600 mAh g −1 ) and safe Li insertion voltage (0.5–1 V vs. Li/Li + ). However, the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) has always been the bottleneck limiting its commercialisation. Here, we propose a facile pre-lithiation method to controllably elevate the ICE by the post-treatment of the prepared Li 3 VO 4 composite electrode based on an immersion reaction. In this process, the whole electrode was immersed in the liquid Li source, via which the ICE of the Li 3 VO 4 electrode can be controllably elevated from 80% to over 100% within 5 min of pre-lithiation. Rather than the traditional powder treatment for pre-lithiation, this process we proposed minimizes the impact of pre-lithiation on the battery assembly process. Moreover, we further investigated the effect of this pre-lithiation process on the functional components in the electrode. For the first time the ICE of Li 3 VO 4 electrode was elevated to 100%. As a result, the initial reversible capacity of LiFePO 4 ∥Li 3 VO 4 full cell was improved from 44.0 to 146.3 mAh g −1 , demonstrating the feasibility and great potential of the process.

Sacrificial Prelithiation Using Different Lithium Salt-Coated LNMO Cathodes for Stabilizing the Electrode Structure and Enhancing Battery Performance

Ling Lin,Shuang Yuan,Huahui Chen,Peng Xu,Tao Zhu,Long Li,Jiaojing Shao

The cobalt-free, high-voltage spinel-type cathode LiNi0.5Mn1.5O4 (LNMO) exhibits high energy and power densities, rendering it a promising candidate for incorporation into next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, its high operating voltage of 4.7 V can lead to electrolyte decomposition, causing structural damage. In addition, the irreversible loss of active lithium in the early cycles reduces capacity performance, hindering its commercial application. To take full advantage of the catalytic effect of LNMO and the prelithiation of sacrificial salt, this work involved blending sacrificial salts (Li2C2O4, Li2CO3, and CH3COOLi) with LNMO to form prelithiated electrodes (LNMO-Sac) and investigating the influence of different sacrificial salts on the performance of LIBs. The results demonstrate that LNMO could efficiently catalyze the decomposition of sacrificial salts and promote the formation of a more stable electrode–electrolyte interface after cycling to mitigate structure destruction of electrodes caused by electrolyte decomposition. Compared with other sacrificial salts, Li2C2O4 provided a highly efficient supplement of active lithium and improved the electrochemical performance of the battery. Thus, LNMO-Li2C2O4 achieved an excellent discharge capacity of 137.9 mAh g–1 at 1C, and capacity retention of 85.9% after 500 cycles, superior to that of LNMO without prelithiation. Moreover, the LNMO-LO/Gr full cell presented an initial capacity of 117.9 mAh g–1 and retained 79.4 mAh g–1 after 300 cycles. This work demonstrates the feasibility of a sacrificial salt as a lithium replenishment strategy for LNMO in practical applications.

Interphase Engineering Enhanced Electro-chemical Stability of Prelithiated Anode

Shiwei Xu,Qiu Fang,Jipeng Wu,Suting Weng,Xiaoyun Li,Qiuyan Liu,Qiyu Wang,Xiqian Yu,Liquan Chen,Yejing Li,Zhaoxiang Wang,Xuefeng Wang

Prelithiation is an essential technology to compensate for the initial lithium loss of lithium-ion batteries due to the formation of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and irreversible structure change. However, the prelithiated materials/electrodes become more reactive with air and electrolyte resulting in unwanted side reactions and contaminations, which makes it difficult for the practical application of prelithiation technology. To address this problem, herein, interphase engineering through a simple solution treatment after chemical prelithiation is proposed to protect the prelithiated electrode. The used solutions are carefully selected, and the composition and nanostructure of the as-formed artificial SEIs are revealed by cryogenic electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The electrochemical evaluation demonstrates the unique merits of this artificial SEI, especially for the fluorinated interphase, which not only enhances the interfacial ion transport but also increases the tolerance of the prelithiated electrode to the air. The treated graphite electrode shows an initial Coulombic efficiency of 129.4%, a high capacity of 170 mAh g −1 at 3 C, and negligible capacity decay after 200 cycles at 1 C. These findings not only provide a facile, universal, and controllable method to construct an artificial SEI but also enlighten the upgrade of battery fabrication and the alternative use of advanced electrolytes.

Lithiated VO2(M)@Carbon Fibers Hybrid Host for Improving the Cycling Stability of Sulfur Cathode in Lithium-Sulfur Batteries†

Yuxin Wang,Ling Zhang,Jiaying Bi,Hao Yang,Zhikun Zhao,Daobin Mu,Borong Wu

Summary of main observation and conclusion We successfully prepared the Li-VO 2 (M) nanosheets via a facile lithiation method. After compositing with conductive carbon fibers, the sulfur host (Li-VO 2 (M)@CFs) combines the efficient adsorption ability of the VO 2 (M) with superior electronic conductivity of the carbon fibers. Besides, carbon fiber cloth used as the current collector can provide the 3D electronic channels. Therefore, the coin cells exhibited the superior reversible capacity of 1250 mA h g –1 at 0.2 C and a low capacity decay value of 0.068% per cycle within 416 cycles at 1 C, indicative of the favorable cycling stability. Moreover, even at a high rate of 5 C, it also kept at a high discharge capacity of 401 mA h g –1 . In conclusion, this work discloses an attractive route to reduce the dissolution loss of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and enhance the overall performance of Li-S batteries.

Formation and Effect of Residual Lithium Compounds on Li-Rich Cathode Material Li1.35[Ni0.35Mn0.65]O2

Chun-xian Zhou,Peng-bo Wang,Bao Zhang,Lin-bo Tang,Hui Tong,Zhen-jiang He,Jun-chao Zheng

Li-rich cathode materials are regarded as ideal cathode materials, owing to their excellent electrochemical capacity. However, residual lithium compounds, which are formed on the surface of the materials by reacting with moisture and carbon dioxide in ambient atmosphere, can impair the surface structure, injure the capacity, and impede the electrode fabrication using Li-rich materials. Exposure to air atmosphere causes the formation of residual lithium compounds; the formation of such compounds is believed to be related to humidity, temperature, and time during handling and storage. In this study, we demonstrated for the first time an artificial strategy for controlling time, temperature, and humidity to accelerate exposure. The formation and effect of residual lithium compounds on Li-rich cathode material Li1.35[Ni0.35Mn0.65]O2 were systematically investigated. The residual lithium compounds formed possessed primarily an amorphous structure and were partially coated on the surface. These compounds include LiOH, Li2O, and Li2CO3. Li2CO3 is the major component in residual lithium compounds. The presence of residual lithium compounds on the material surface led to a high discharge capacity loss and large discharge voltage fading. Understanding the formation and suppressing the effect of residual lithium compounds will help prevent their unfavorable effects and improve the electrochemical performance.

In Situ Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of Fe/Li2O as a High-Capacity Cathode Prelithiation Additive for Lithium Ion Batteries

Jusheng Zheng,Kui Liang,Kaiyue Shi,Yechao Qiu

The irreversible capacity loss in the first cycle significantly reduces the specific capacity of lithium ion batteries. Cathode prelithiation is a common method to alleviate this problem. Here, Fe/Li2O were successfully prepared by in situ solid phase reaction method. Fe/Li2O as a cathode prelithiation additive has a high prelithiation specific capacity of 447.3 mAh g -1 during charging, and the first charge capacity of LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2 with 7.5% Fe/Li2O additive could be enhanced by 9.1% and its cycling stability was improved from 86.9% to 90.2% after 70 cycles. The cathode prelithiation additive remarkably enhanced the content of active lithium during the initial delithiation process, contributing the formation of solid electrolyte interphase on the anode surface and better cycling stability. This easy-operating cathode prelithiation method could obtain evident effect of prelithiation and had good compatibility with existing lithium ion batteries.
