The selective extraction of lithium from brine by lithium aluminum layered double hydroxides (Li/Al-LDHs) adsorption is used industrially. To maintain the structural and performance stability of the Li/Al-LDHs adsorbent, the Li/Al-LDHs adsorbent can be doped with some high electron density metals such as Fe(III) and regenerated by dilute Li-containing aqueous solution. In this study, we use Fe(III) doping and FeOOH nanocomposite to stabilize the structure of Li/Al-LDHs. The nanocomposites of Li/Al-LDHs, Fe dopped Li/Al-LDHs (Fe-Li/Al-LDHs), and FeOOH were synthesized by the phase-separated sol–gel method and granulated by using crosslinked alginate polymers. The nanocomposites and granulated nanocomposites were characterized by SEM, TEM, XPS, FT-IR, and XRD analyses. The adsorption–desorption performance of the granulated nanocomposites was evaluated with a single LiCl solution and the brine from Da Qaidam Salt Lake. The isotherms, kinetics, and thermodynamics parameters and Arrhenius parameters of the lithium adsorption of the granulated nanocomposites were obtained. At the 80% mass loading of the nanocomposites in the granulation, the granulated nanocomposites statically adsorbed 9.46 mg/g lithium and dynamically 8.18 mg/g lithium from Da Qaidam Salt Lake brine. The Fe(III) doping and nanocomposite with FeOOH reduced the dissolution of the Li/Al-LDHs in the granulated nanocomposites and did not negatively affect the adsorption capacity of the granulated nanocomposites.

Powder Li/Al-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) of Li 2 Al 4 (CO 3 )(OH) 12 ·3H 2 O were hydrothermally synthesized in one pot with sodium alginate as a structure modifier and granulated by crosslinked sodium alginate. The powder and granulated Li/Al-LDHs lithium adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and porosity. The adsorption-desorption performance of the granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbents was evaluated. Adsorption isotherm , adsorption kinetics , adsorption thermodynamics were investigated. The effects of solution pH, temperature, and the electrolytes (NaCl, Na 2 SO 4 , MgCl 2 , and KCl) on lithium adsorption, and the dissolution of granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbents after cyclic adsorption-desorption were also investigated. The granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbed 14.5 mg/g of lithium from the brine of East Taigener Salt Lake with a lithium concentration of 1400 mg/L. The granulation of powder Li/Al-LDHs by crosslinked alginate greatly reduced the dissolution of powder Li/Al-LDHs. The granulated Li/Al-LDHs adsorbents prepared in this report are promising materials for Li + extraction from salt lake brines.

Hierarchical meso- and macro-porosity increases the adsorption capacity of lithium adsorbents and the granulation of powder lithium adsorbents raises the applicability of lithium adsorbents. Granulated lithium adsorbents consisting of porous mixtures of Li-Al-LDHs (layered double hydroxide) and NH 4 Al 3 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 by crosslinking sodium alginate were successfully prepared, and adsorption-desorption performance of granulated adsorbents was evaluated. The adsorption capacity of granulated lithium adsorbents reached 9.66 mg/g (at the loading capacity of 83.3% by mass, 25 ℃, and pH=6). The granulated lithium adsorbents were prepared in three steps. First, porous precursors of NH 4 Al 3 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 and γ-AlOOH were synthesized hydrothermally using Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ·18H 2 O and Urea. The porous powder precursors were then lithiated in aqueous LiOH solution to give mixed porous powders of NH 4 Al 3 (SO 4 ) 2 (OH) 6 and Li-Al-LDHs of Li 2 Al 4 (OH) 12 SO 4 ·xH 2 O. Lithiated powder precursors were finally granulated by ionic crosslinking sodium alginate in CaCl 2 aqueous solutions and deintercalated using water. The precursors and lithiated precursors were characterized by IR spectroscopy , powder XRD , XPS spectroscopy , SEM, TEM, thermal analyses, particle size analysis , and BET surface area. The adsorption isotherm , adsorption kinetics , the effects of pH, temperature, initial lithium concentration, and the anions and cations interference on lithium adsorption-desorption performance of granulated lithium adsorbents were studied. The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics were best fitted with the Langmuir model and pseudo-second-order rate equation , respectively. Lithium adsorption was an endothermic process. The granulated lithium adsorbents were applied to real East Taigener salt lake brine. The lithium adsorption capacity dropped slightly to 9.16 mg/g; the adsorption equilibrium reached within 180 min; the dissolution rate was 0.54% after 10 cycles of adsorption and desorption. The granulated lithium adsorbents prepared show the potential in industrial application.

Lithium aluminum layered double hydroxide chlorides (LADH-Cl) are the only industrial-level lithium sorbents. However, as an applied material, the composition-structure-property-performance relation is far from well constrained, leaving the manufacture and application of LADH-Cl lithium sorbents empirical rather than rational. Herein, we studied the phase evolution of gibbsite phase Al(OH) 3 in concentrated LiOH aqueous solution, suggesting the formation of lithiated lithium aluminum layered double hydroxide (LADH-OH) with Al:Li molar ratio 2. However, LADH-OH is not an active ingredient as a lithium sorbent. The neutralization of LADH-OH with a dilute HCl aqueous solution resulted in the formation of the active LADH-Cl phase. Unlike the traditional LADH-Cl phase (g-LADH-Cl) generated from direct LiCl intercalation of gibbsite, LADH-OH derived LADH-Cl (b-LADH-Cl) has a topological parent of bayerite instead of gibbsite. This is one of the most important roots for different performances. Another source for the different performance is very likely from variations of the particle size and morphology when the raw gibbsite reacted with LiCl or LiOH aqueous solution. Nevertheless, we found that the limiting-delithiation of b-LADH-Cl is still the same as g-LADH-Cl, that is only maximum 1/3 lithium can be delithiated from the LADH-Cl phase without any decomposition into gibbsite or bayerite. This concluded that b-LADH-Cl and g-LADH-Cl have the same reversible lithium “sorption–desorption” capacity, even through different lithium affinity and sorption kinetics. Also, notably, the “sorption–desorption” performance of the optimal sorbent is very sensitive to the properties of service brines. These results substantially enlarged our knowledge of the LADH-Cl phase and provided a demo of the rational manufacture of lithium sorbent. Graphical Abstract

Taking the application merits and difficulty into consideration, a synergistical synchronous doping strategy was firstly proposed for configuring a structure stable high-performance lithium aluminum layered double hydroxide chloride type lithium adsorbents by a simple one-pot precipitation method to resist the performance attenuation of aluminum-based adsorbents during sorption. As-proposed designing strategy not only grants the LDHs-type adsorbents high adsorption capacity up to 10.4 mg/g in 400 ppm LiCl solution, but also ensures the adsorbents excellent Li + /Na + , Li + /Mg 2+ , Li + /K + separation coefficients up to 236.7, 187.2 and 282.6, respectively. The initial and retained adsorption capacities after 70 desorption/adsorption cycles of as-prepared adsorbents after granulation are 12.08 and 5.09 mg/g, respectively in real sulfate-type West Taijinar Salt Lake brines with 400 ppm Li + , which is mainly attributed to the largely accelerated structure self-curability at sorption. Generally, this study can actually achieve efficient, selective and stable collection of Li + from low-grade brines with high Mg 2+ /Li + ratio.
