Recycled Lithium from Simulated Pyrometallurgical Slag by Chlorination Roasting

Hui Dang,Benfeng Wang,Zhidong Chang,Xue Wu,Jingge Feng,Hualei Zhou,Wenjun Li,Changyan Sun

When the spent lithium ion battery is processed pyrometallurgically, lithium is generally fixed as slag with a high melting/boiling point which is difficult to be treated further. In this research, an innovative method to recycle lithium from pyro-slag by evaporation during chlorination roasting was proposed. Different chlorine donors, namely NaCl, AlCl3, and CaCl2 were evaluated by HSC software and experiments, among which CaCl2 possessed a stronger ability of chlorine donation in the chlorination roasting process. Experiments proved that 97.45% lithium was evaporated with the Cl/Li molar ratio of 1.8:1 when the mixture of a simulated slag and CaCl2 was roasted at 1000 °C for 90 min. XRD results demonstrated that the majority of LiAl(SiO3)2 in the slag was transformed into LiCl. All results implied that chlorination roasting should be a promising strategy for lithium recovery from the pyrometallurgical slag after pyro-treatment of the spent lithium ion battery.

Efficient Oxidation Approach for Selective Recovery of Lithium from Cathode Materials of Spent LiFePO4 Batteries

Liu Peiwen,Fei Zitong,Zhang Yingjie,Dong Peng,Meng Qi,Yang Xi

Developing a green and efficient approach for recovering Li from cathode materials is important in recycling spent LiFePO 4 batteries. A facile and efficient oxidation process was developed to selectively recover Li from spent LiFePO 4 batteries. The common oxidant NaClO was used to avoid using acid or alkali in the leaching process. The leaching rate of Li reached 99.8% under the selective optimal leaching conditions of 0.54 mol/l NaClO, leaching time 60 min, leaching temperature 60°C and solid–liquid ratio 1 g/l. The high leaching efficiency can be ascribed to the combination of oxidability and high pH value of the NaClO solution. Meanwhile, leaching and precipitation were carried out simultaneously in this process, which promoted the leaching reaction. High performance LiFePO 4 /C was resynthesized using the recovered products. The specific capacity of the first discharge at 1 C was 147.1 mAh/g and the capacity retention rate at 1 C was 97.55% after 200 cycles. The oxidation approach is acid free and has low energy consumption for green recovery of spent LiFePO 4 batteries.

Efficient and Prioritized Lithium Recovery from Spent Li(Ni0.5Co0.2Mn0.3)O2 Cathodes via SO2 Treatment

Zejia Wu,Jiashu Yuan,Hui Wang,Zaifa Pan,Jie Gao,Yonggao Xia

With the wide application of ternary lithium-ion batteries, the increased usage of batteries has resulted in a corresponding rise in the amount of discarded batteries. Here, we propose an efficient and prioritized lithium extraction process with a low environmental impact for the recovery of valuable metal components from spent LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cathode materials. SO2 calcination–water leaching was used to recover Li, while H2SO4 acid leaching facilitated the recovery of Ni, Co, and Mn, yielding a precursor solution for the treatment of discarded NCM batteries. The effects of calcination temperature, calcination time, water leaching time, water leaching liquid–solid ratio, different battery ratios, acid leaching time, acid leaching liquid–solid ratio, and acid leaching temperature were optimized. The acid leaching process was controlled by surface chemical reactions through kinetic analysis. Under optimal conditions, Li was converted to soluble Li2SO4, achieving an impressive leaching rate of 99.7%. Ni, CO, and Mn were converted to their respective oxides. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the formation of Li2Mn(SO4)2 from Mn with Li during calcination enhances the leaching efficiency across different battery composition ratios. The activation energies of Ni, Co, and Mn during the acid leaching process were determined by kinetic calculations, yielding values of 130.19, 133.05, and 134.09 kJ mol–1, respectively. This study provides a novel method for recycling spent NCM cathode materials.

Amorphous TiO2-Derived Large-Capacity Lithium Ion Sieve for Lithium Recovery

Xiaowei Li,Linlin Chen,Yanhong Chao,Wang Chen,Jing Luo,Jun Xiong,Fengxia Zhu,Xiaozhong Chu,Huaming Li,Wenshuai Zhu

The lithium titanium oxide ion sieve with good structural stability and high adsorption capacity is generally considered to be a promising adsorbent for lithium recovery. Herein, the lithium ion sieve precursor Li 2 TiO 3 was prepared based on amorphous TiO 2 , and then Li + was acid-eluted to obtain the lithium adsorbent H 2 TiO 3 , denoted as HTO-Am. The structure and adsorption properties of HTO-Am were investigated, and the results demonstrated that the HTO-Am prepared at the optimum temperature had excellent adsorption properties for Li + . The adsorption process follows pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm equations, indicating that lithium is adsorbed chemically and monolayer on HTO-Am. HTO-Am ion sieves were prepared successfully for the first time and exhibited high selectivity, favorable adsorption rate, and cycle performance for Li + .

Preparation and characterization of lithium ion sieves embedded in a hydroxyethyl cellulose cryogel for the continuous recovery of lithium from brine and seawater

Chunjie Liu,Baifu Tao,Zhihui Wang,Dong Wang,Ruili Guo,Liang Chen

This study proposes lithium ion sieves (LIS) embedded in a cross-linked hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) cryogel for the effective adsorption recovery Li + from brine and seawater resources. The Li + adsorption process conformed well with the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum Li + adsorption capacities are calculated to be 42.57–54.23 mg/(g of LIS). In addition, the Li + adsorption capacities of the LIS-HEC cryogels from artificial brine and seawater are 10.64 and 2.46 mg/(g of LIS), respectively. In addition, the Li + selectivity of the LIS-HEC cryogels against other cations is consistent that of LIS powder. Moreover, monolithic columns of LIS-HEC cryogels exhibit good mechanical stability, small back pressure, and the periods required to complete the acid treatment, adsorption, and desorption processes during continuous operation are greatly decreased in comparison with the performances of other composite absorbents. These results demonstrate the potential of the proposed LIS-HEC cryogels for recovering Li + from liquid lithium resources.

Construction of truncated-octahedral LiMn2O4 for battery-like electrochemical lithium recovery from brine

Guolang Zhou,Linlin Chen,Xiaowei Li,Guiling Luo,Zhendong Yu,Jingzhou Yin,Lei Fan,Yanhong Chao,Lei Jiang,Wenshuai Zhu

The extraction of lithium from salt lakes or seawater has attracted worldwide attention because of the explosive growth of global demand for lithium products. The LiMn 2 O 4 -based electrochemical lithium recovery system is one of the strongest candidates for commercial application due to its high inserted capacity and low energy consumption. However, the surface orientation of LiMn 2 O 4 that facilitates Li diffusion happens to be prone to manganese dissolution making it a great challenge to obtain high lithium inserted capacity and long life simultaneously. Herein, we address this problem by designing a truncated octahedral LiMn 2 O 4 (Tr-oh LMO) in which the dominant (111) facets minimize Mn dissolution while a small portion of (100) facets facilitate the Li diffusion. Thus, this Tr-oh LMO-based electrochemical lithium recovery system shows excellent Li recovery performance with high inserted capacity (20.25 mg g −1 per cycle) in simulated brine. In addition, the dissolution rate of manganese per 30 cycles is only 0.44% and the capacity maintained 85% of the initial after 30 cycles. These promising findings accelerate the practical application of LiMn 2 O 4 in electrochemical lithium recovery.

Efficient lithium recovery from electrolytic aluminum slag via an environmentally friendly process: Leaching behavior and mechanism

Li Cui,Weihong Wang,Xi Chao,Jianming Gao,Fangqin Cheng

The electrolytic aluminum industry generates a large amount lithium (Li)-containing electrolytic aluminum slag (EAS) annually, and this can result in severe environmental pollution and wasting of Li resources. This paper proposes a method for recovering Li from the slag using AlCl 3 as the leaching agent. The effects of the leaching temperature, AlCl 3 concentration, pH, and solid-to-liquid ratio (S/L) on the leaching efficiency of Li + were systematically examined. The structural transformation during the Li leaching process was revealed by SEM, XRD, 27 Al NMR, and XPS analyses. The results indicate that up to 88.3% of Li  +  can be leached out using 0.85 M of AlCl 3 with an S/L of 1:3 at a leaching temperature of 95 °C and pH of 0.5. The addition of AlCl 3 played an essential role in the decomposition of cryolite/cryolithionite, ultimately resulting in Al–F fracture and Li + release in the leaching solution . Moreover, Al 3+ enters the interior of the slag to participate in the reconstruction of the chiolite with a low NaF/AlF 3 ratio, and reacts with OH − ionized from H 2 O to form hydroxyl aluminum fluoride species. Fluorine ions were solidified in the leaching residues for subsequent cryolite regeneration. This study not only provides an environmentally friendly process for resource utilization from EAS but also reduces the environmental threat caused by the storage of the hazardous waste .

Surface-Engineered Nanofiltration Membranes for Sustainable Lithium Recovery from Real Brine: Addressing Fouling and Scaling Challenges

Xuesong Li,Man Xu,Xin Liu,Qianhong She,Woei Jye Lau,Linyan Yang

Nanofiltration (NF) membranes hold great promise for lithium (Li) recovery from brines, with numerous studies focusing on improving Li/Mg separation performance. However, real brine environments pose significant challenges, as fouling and scaling severely hinder Li recovery efficiency. Despite their critical impact, these challenges have received limited attention. This study addresses these issues through surface engineering of polyamide (PA) NF membranes, achieving a positively charged, ultra-smooth surface. The engineered membrane demonstrated exceptional fouling and scaling resistance during real brine treatment, exhibiting only a 12% flux decline over 12 hours, compared to 28% and 20% for the control and commercial NF270 membranes, respectively. This superior antifouling performance enabled sustained high Li flux (>80 mM·m⁻ 2 ·h⁻ 1 ) while reducing the Mg/Li mass ratio from 4.1 in the feed to 1.4 in the permeate. Additionally, the membrane displayed remarkable resistance to scaling in synthetic brine containing high concentrations of Ca 2+ and SO 4 2 ⁻. Systematic evaluations in both synthetic and real brines revealed that the enhanced process stability arises from the synergistic effects of reduced surface roughness and optimized surface charge, which together minimize foulant adhesion and mitigate scaling. These findings mark a significant advancement toward the practical implementation of membrane-based Li recovery, underscoring the critical importance of addressing fouling and scaling in real brine environments.

Recovery of lithium from the effluent obtained in the process of spent lithium-ion batteries recycling

Xueyi Guo,Xiao Cao,Guoyong Huang,Qinghua Tian,Hongyu Sun

A novel process of lithium recovery as lithium ion sieve from the effluent obtained in the process of spent lithium-ion batteries recycling is developed. Through a two-stage precipitation process using Na 2 CO 3 and Na 3 PO 4 as precipitants , lithium is recovered as raw Li 2 CO 3 and pure Li 3 PO 4 , respectively. Under the best reaction condition (both the amounts of Na 2 CO 3 and Li 3 PO 4 vs . the theoretical ones are about 1.1), the corresponding recovery rates of lithium (calculated based on the concentration of the previous stage) are 74.72% and 92.21%, respectively. The raw Li 2 CO 3 containing the impurity of Na 2 CO 3 is used to prepare LiMn 2 O 4 as lithium ion sieve, and the tolerant level of sodium on its property is studied through batch tests of adsorption capacity and corrosion resistance . When the weight percentage of Na 2 CO 3 in raw Li 2 CO 3 is controlled less than 10%, the Mn corrosion percentage of LiMn 2 O 4 decreases to 21.07%, and the adsorption capacity can still keep at 40.08 mg g −1 . The results reveal that the conventional separation sodium from lithium may be avoided through the application of the raw Li 2 CO 3 in the field of lithium ion sieve.

Nanofiltration membrane with a reactive, positively charged nanofiber interlayer for recycling lithium from waste batteries

Shuqing Cao,Jingjing Wang,Qin Cheng,Yi Wu,Jia Xu,Ming Xia,Ke Liu,Shanshan He,Dong Wang

With the development of new energy powered vehicles, the shortage of lithium resources has become more urgent. The recovery and extraction of lithium resources from waste lithium iron phosphate batteries can achieve the sustainable development of the new energy industry, alleviate the imbalance between the supply of and demand for lithium resources, and greatly reduce the environmental pressure brought by the future battery retirement tide. In this work, a poly(ethylene vinyl alcohol) nanofiber was employed to construct a positive interlayer via co-crosslinking with PEI and sprayed on a PES substrate, on which a positive polyamide nanofiltration layer was formed via interfacial polymerization with 1,3,5-benzenetricarbonyl chloride. The abundant interconnected pores of nanofibers provided high water flux. Meanwhile, the dual positively charged layer had a synergistic effect on cation rejection. The nanofiber interlayer greatly improved the roughness and effectively enhanced the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface. The optimized nanofiltration membrane exhibited a pure water flux of 36.73 L m−2 h−1, a high Fe3+ rejection of 99.36%, and a Li+/Fe3+ separation factor of up to 115. Its excellent separation performance was maintained under acidic conditions, revealing its great potential in recycling lithium from waste batteries.

Highly Efficient Lithium Recovery from Pre-Synthesized Chlorine-Ion-Intercalated LiAl-Layered Double Hydroxides via a Mild Solution Chemistry Process

Ying Sun,Rongping Yun,Yufeng Zang,Min Pu,Xu Xiang

Lithium extraction from salt lake brine is critical for satisfying the increasing demand of a variety of lithium products. We report lithium recovery from pre-synthesized LiAl-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) via a mild solution reaction. Lithium ions were released from solid LiAl-LDHs to obtain a lithium-bearing solution. The LiAl-LDHs phase was gradually transformed into a predominantly Al(OH)3phase with lithium recovery to the aqueous solution. The lithium recovery percentage and the concentration of the lithium-bearing solution were dependent on the crystallinity of LiAl-LDHs, the initial concentration of the LiAl-LDHs-1 slurry, the reaction temperature, and the reaction time. Under optimized conditions, the lithium recovery reached 86.2% and the Li+concentration in the filtrate is 141.6 mg/L. Interestingly, no aluminum ions were detected in the filtrate after solid–liquid separation with high crystallinity LiAl-LDHs, which indicated the complete separation of lithium and aluminum in the liquid and solid phases, respectively. The27Al NMR spectra of the solid products indicate that lithium recovery from the lattice vacancies of LiAl-LDHs affects the AlO6coordination in an octahedral configuration of the ordered Al(OH)3phase. The XPS O 1sspectra show that the Oadpeak intensity increased and the OLpeak intensity decreased with the increasing lithium recovery, which indicated that the Al-OH bond was gradually formed and the metal–oxygen–metal bond was broken. Keywords:lithium recovery;LiAl-LDHs;reaction-coupled separation technology;salt lake brine

Synthesis of a magnetic crown ether ion imprinted polymer material for the selective adsorption of lithium

Yuhong Huang,Xiaowei Li,Linlin Chen,Guiling Luo,Duanjian Tao,Jing Sun,Zhenjiang Qiu,Yanhong Chao,Wenshuai Zhu

To meet the requirements of the strong future market for lithium resources, it is crucial to retrieve lithium from high Mg/Li ratio brines. Herein, a novel magnetic crown ether Li+-imprinting polymer was designed by combining surface ion imprinting and magnetic separation techniques. Through the specific recognition of Li+ by the crown ether modified with a hydroxyl functional group, an excellent lithium ion separation performance was achieved. The separation selectivity factors for Li+ using OS@FeSi@CE-OH for Na+, K+ and Mg2+ were 7.74, 2.75 and 2.98, respectively. In addition, the use of an external magnetic field avoids filtration and centrifugation to achieve efficient recovery of adsorbed materials, which can shorten the analysis time and simplify the separation process. Therefore, these remarkable features address the problems encountered with traditional powder adsorbents, making OS@FeSi@CE-OH a potential candidate for lithium recovery.
