Local phase transition in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) by lithium intercalation enables the fabrication of high-quality contact interfaces in two-dimensional (2D) electronic devices. However, controlling the intercalation of lithium is hitherto challenging in vertically stacked van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) due to the random diffusion of lithium ions in the hetero-interface, which hinders their application for contact engineering of 2D vdWHs devices. Herein, a strategy to restrict the lithium intercalation pathway in vdWHs is developed by using surface-permeation assisted intercalation while sealing all edges, based on which a high-performance edge-contact MoS 2 vdWHs floating-gate transistor is demonstrated. Our method avoids intercalation from edges that are prone to be random but intentionally promotes lithium intercalation from the top surface. The derived MoS 2 floating-gate transistor exhibits improved interface quality and significantly reduced subthreshold swing ( SS ) from >600 to 100 mV dec –1 . In addition, ultrafast program/erase performance together with well-distinguished 32 memory states are demonstrated, making it a promising candidate for low-power artificial synapses. The study on controlling the lithium intercalation pathways in 2D vdWHs offers a viable route toward high-performance 2D electronics for memory and neuromorphic computing purposes.

Optical materials with dynamic colors have shown great prospects for applications in display devices, smart windows, and camouflage coatings. Recently, intercalation has been demonstrated to be a powerful strategy for tuning electromagnetic properties of two-dimensional materials ranging from visible to microwave wavelengths, such as the visible color, infrared emission, terahertz radiation, and optical second-harmonic generation. Here, a systematic study of graphene intercalation compound (GIC)-based coloration films is presented. Through lithium (Li), sulfuric acid (H2SO4), and ferric chloride (FeCl3) intercalation, the color of a multilayer graphene (MLG) film transforms from gray to yellow, blue, and dark, respectively. This is attributed to the reconstruction of the band structure of graphene after intercalation, resulting in a significant effect on its optical properties. Furthermore, tunable and reversible color changes of MLG film have been demonstrated by precisely controlling the Li-intercalation process. Our research indicates that intercalation is a versatile strategy for fabricating advanced coloration materials and provides a promising tunable optical surface for the application in sensing, adaptive camouflage, and smart displaying.

Silicon oxide nanospheres (SiOC) have been considered one of the key candidates for the next generation of high-energy-density anode materials. Nevertheless, the intrinsic limitations of their design impede their large-scale commercial deployment, including large volume expansion, poor electrical conductivity, and low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE). The application of a polymer coating represents a beneficial modification. Herein, a composite SiOC anode is synthesized by constructing poly(hexaazatrinaphthalene) (PHATN) on the surface of boron doping-induced self-assembled SiOC nanospheres. The SiOC nanospheres change from a monodisperse structure to a regular and ordered arrangement by self-assembly, which improves the structural stability. A special polymer, PHATN, is selected for its unique structure, which introduces a dynamic conversion mechanism to the material. During the lithium intercalation process, –CN– groups in the PHATN coordinate with Li+ to form –C–N–Li– bonds on the PHATN molecule layer. The dynamic volume change of the PHATN molecule allows room for the volume expansion of SiOC, thus providing excellent protection against structural collapse. After 1000 deep cycles, the capacity of the composite anode can be maintained at 623.7 mA h g−1, showing considerable stability and superior specific capacity. PHATN simultaneously repairs the surface defects of the SiOC assemblies and enhances the performance of the SEI membrane, increasing the ICE from 40% to 50%, which exhibits better electrochemical performance.

Lithium intercalation in MoS 2 drives the transformation from its semiconducting 2H to metallic 1T/1T’ phase, allowing the fabrication of low-resistance edge contacts in transistors and diodes. However, due to the presence of chemically reactive lithium, the properties of the resulting Li x MoS 2 are sensitive to processing methods, raising additional concerns about its stability and performance when applied in electronic devices, which have rarely been discussed. Here, the processing method of lithium-intercalated MoS 2 in n-butyllithium solution is investigated for optimal edge contact performance in transistors. The stability of Li x MoS 2 when exposed to various solvents, ambient environment (air and vacuum) and thermal stress (from room temperature to 300 °C) is studied in terms of its electrical conductivity and phase ratio. It is found that exposure to water causes immediate degradation of the electrical conductivity of Li x MoS 2 , while under thermal stress, irreversible degradation occurs when the temperature exceeds 150 °C. Therefore, avoiding thermal stress during device fabrication is essential. Following this, an optimal procedure is proposed to fabricate low-resistance 1T-Li x MoS 2 edge contacts, achieving a contact resistance of ≈420 Ω µm, which also displays suppressed defect states in edge-contacted transistors.

Fabricating solution-processable composite materials of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with ultrasmall noble metal structures employing an easy preparation method poses a significant challenge. In this study, we utilized a green, one-step synthetic method by directly employing electrochemical lithium intercalation-based exfoliated metallic TMD nanosheets (MoS2, WS2, and TiS2) to reduce palladium ions (Pd2+) to metallic Pd0, leading to the deposition on their surfaces. The resulting Pd nanoparticles (Pd NPs) in composites (Pd-MoS2, Pd-WS2, and Pd-TiS2) were found to be amorphous, with a size ranging from 0.81 to 1.37 nm. The impact of Pd NP size on hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity was elucidated. Among the fabricated composites, Pd-MoS2 exhibits the best HER performance, attributed to its smallest Pd NP size (0.81 nm). It shows an overpotential of 70 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2, along with a Tafel slope of 43 mV dec−1. These HER performance metrics surpass those of most Pd-decorated 2D catalysts.
