The low Coulombic efficiency of the lithium metal anode is recognized as the real bottleneck to practical high-efficiency lithium metal batteries with limited Li excess. The grain size and microstructure of deposited lithium strongly influences the lithium plating/stripping efficiency. Here, a solubilizer-mediated carbonate electrolyte that can realize grain coarsening of lithium deposits (>20 µm in width) with oriented columnar morphology, which is in sharp contrast with conventional nanoscale dendrite-like lithium deposits in carbonate electrolytes, is reported. It exhibits improved Li Coulombic efficiency to 98.14% at a high capacity of 3 mAh cm −2 over 150 cycles, because the colossal lithium deposition with minimal tortuosity can maintain the bulk Li with continuous electron conducting pathway during the stripping process, thus enabling efficient Li utilization. Li/NMC811 full batteries, composed of thin Li anode (45 µm) and a high-capacity NMC811 cathode (16.7 mg cm −2 ), can achieve at least 12 times longer lifespan (200 cycles).

Lithium (Li) penetration through solid electrolytes (SEs) induces short circuits in Li solid-state batteries (SSBs), which is a critical issue that hinders the development of high energy density SSBs. While cracking in ceramic SEs has been often shown to accompany Li penetration, the interplay between Li deposition and cracking remains elusive. Here, we constructed a mesoscale SSB inside a focused ion beam-scanning electron microscope (FIB-SEM) for in situ observation of Li deposition-induced cracking in SEs at nanometer resolution. Our results revealed that Li propagated predominantly along transgranular cracks in a garnet Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO). Cracks appeared to initiate from the interior of LLZTO beneath the electrode surface and then propagated by curving toward the LLZTO surface. The resulting bowl-shaped cracks resemble those from hydraulic fracture caused by high fluid pressure on the surface of internal cracks, suggesting that the Li deposition-induced pressure is the major driving force of crack initiation and propagation. The high pressure generated by Li deposition is further supported by in situ observation of the flow of filled Li between the crack flanks, causing crack widening and propagation. This work unveils the dynamic interplay between Li deposition and cracking in SEs and provides insight into the mitigation of Li dendrite penetration in SSBs.

Lithium metal anode is the ideal candidate for high-energy–density rechargeable batteries. However, uncontrolled dendrite growth hampers its commercialization. Herein, a dendrite-free composite Li metal anode is realized by a flexible, freestanding, well-aligned and highly-lithiophilic MXene paper designed by a facile electrostatic self-assembly of the exfoliated MXene nanosheets and natural polysaccharide-chitosan (MX@CS). The MX@CS paper gets a well-aligned layered-3D structure with a micro-crumpled surface that can effectively decrease the local current density, guide even Li plating and suppress dendritic Li growth. More importantly, surface-adsorbed chitosan endows enhanced lithiophilicity for MXene substrate and thus reduces the Li nucleation overpotential, which is confirmed by the density functional theory calculations. Abundant lithiophilic groups on MX@CS surface provide high-concentration Li + anchoring site promoting Li nucleation and laterally inducing uniform Li deposition, which effectively avoids the formation of dendritic Li. As a result, the MX@CS-Li anode with a dendrite-free Li morphology shows a significantly improved cycling life in commercial carbonate-based electrolyte. When coupled with LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 cathode, the full cell exhibits a low capacity decay and steady ultrahigh Coulombic efficiency of 99.6% at a current density of 5C. These findings develop a new approach for designing high-performance metal-based rechargeable batteries.

Using a lithium (Li) metal as an anode for next-generation high-energy-density batteries is plagued due to dendritic Li plating and a huge volumetric change accompanied by drastic side reactions. In this work, the cyclic performance of the Li metal is prolonged using an anode protective structure consisting of imbedded silver nanowires (AgNWs) in a stacked graphene (SG) host. The interwoven AgNWs work as a Li nucleation guiding mesh and enable compact Li plating, offsetting the dendritic Li plating on the SG. The SG with a rational void space tolerates the volumetric variation upon cycling, significantly suppressing the electrode pulverization upon cycling. The AgNWs@SG composite architecture realizes a compact and interlaminar Li plating against the corrosion of electrolytes, achieving an improved performance at a high current density (3 mA cm–2) and capacity (3 mAh cm–2). Meanwhile, improved performance of Li||LiFePO4 full cells with a practical negative/positive capacity ratio of 3 is also demonstrated.

Lithium (Li)-rich ternary alloy, comprising a multi-alloy phase as the built-in three-dimensional (3D) framework and a Li metal phase as a reversible Li reservoir, is a promising high-energy–density anode for rechargeable Li metal batteries. The introduction of metal/metalloid components to the alloy can effectively regulate Li deposition and maintain the dimensional integrity of the Li anode. Herein, the lithium–copper–zinc (Li–Cu–Zn) ternary alloy, as a new type of alloy anode, is synthesized via a facile thermal melting method. The fully delithiated 3D scaffold comprised two Cu–Zn alloy phases named CuZn and CuZn 5 . These alloy phases exhibit higher lithiophilicity and structural stability than Li–Zn and Li–Cu alloys. Moreover, the CuZn phase is electrochemically inert, ensuring the geometric stability of the anode, while the CuZn 5 phase can readily undergo alloying reaction with Li to form the LiZn phase, thereby facilitating uniform Li nucleation and deposition. The hybridized multiphase alloy structure and specific energy storage mechanism of the Cu–Zn based alloy scaffold in the ternary alloy anode facilitate dendrite-free Li deposition and prolonged cycle lifetime. The Li metal full battery based on lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO 4 ) cathode exhibits high cycling stability with high-capacity retention of 95.4% after 1000 cycles at 1C.

Unleashing the potential of lithium-metal anodes in practical applications is hindered by the inherent stress-related challenges arising from their limitless volume expansion, leading to mechanical failures such as electrode cracking, solid electrolyte interphase damage, and dendritic growth. Despite the various protective strategies to “combat” stress in lithium-metal anodes, they fail to address the intrinsic issue fundamentally. Here, a unique strategy is proposed that leverages the stress generated during the battery cycling via the piezoelectric effect, transforming to the adaptive built-in electric field to accelerate lithium-ion migration, homogenize the lithium deposition, and alleviate the stress concentration. The mechanism of the piezoelectric effect in modulating electro-chemomechanical field evolution is further validated and decoupled through finite element method simulations. Inspired by this strategy, a high sensitivity, fast responsive, and strength adaptability polymer piezoelectric is used to demonstrate the feasibility and the corresponding protected lithium-metal anode shows cycling stability over 6000 h under a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and extending life in a variety of coin and pouch cell systems. This work effectively tackles the stress-related issues and decoupling the electro-chemomechanical field evolution also contributes to developing more stable lithium anodes for future research.

The durability of lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) is a crucial factor for advancing market applications. Although remarkable progress is achieved in cycling stability at ambient temperatures, the rapid capacity decay at low temperatures (LT) limits their utilization in extreme conditions. This study reveals that LiBs with silicon/graphite (Si/C) anodes exhibit superior LT performance compared to conventional graphite-based anodes. The electrochemical analysis demonstrates that Si improves the LT kinetic performance. In addition, the higher potential plateau of Si thermodynamically prevents the anode from easily reaching the lithium (Li) plating potential. The pronounced expansion of Si and the corresponding thicker solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) at the LT are demonstrated by various characterization techniques, especially the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling analyses. Li plating is confirmed as the main degradation factor at LT rather than Si swelling. Instead, the addition of Si effectively inhibits anode Li plating, contributing to outstanding LT cycling stability. Furthermore, guidance on the Si/C hybrid strategy is provided through simulations. This study provides a valuable strategy for improving LiB performance at LTs, and promotes the application in extreme conditions, such as in space and the deep sea.

Developing electrolytes qualified for high-voltage (>4 V vs Li/Li + ) conditions is of great significance for high-energy density Li-metal batteries (LMBs). Carbonate-based electrolytes possess high oxidation stability, whereas the uneven Li deposition, low Coulombic efficiency (CE) and poor anodic stability of such electrolytes severely impede the practical application in high-voltage LMBs. Herein, a 1.8 M lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide (LiTFSI)-carbonate electrolyte with high compatibility with both Li anode and high-voltage cathode is designed. LiNO 3 is introduced into the electrolyte as an additive with the assistance of CuF 2 cosolvent, which efficiently enables robust and conductive interfaces at both anode and cathode sides. As a consequence, an average CE of 98.0% is achieved for Li||Cu half-cell at 1 mA cm −2 . Li||LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cell fabricated with cathode areal capacity of 2.4 mAh cm −2 and 5× excess Li achieves a high capacity retention of 80.7% after 200 cycles with cut-off voltage of 4.3 V. This work provides a facile and effective approach to improve the application of carbonate-based electrolytes in high-voltage LMBs.

Lithium (Li) metal is regarded as one of the most prospective electrodes for next-generation rechargeable batteries. However, its widespread usage has been fettered by low coulombic efficiency (CE), poor cycling stability, and serious safety concerns, mainly arising from huge volumetric variation, inhomogeneous Li deposition, and dendrite growth during repeated Li plating/stripping cycles. Herein, we propose a facile one-pot electrospinning-derived highly lithiophilic nanocopper-reinforced three-dimensional-structured carbon nanofiber (Cu-CNF) as functional scaffold to stabilize the Li metal. The Cu-CNF scaffolded Li metal demonstrates homogeneous nanoplate-like Li deposition, enhanced CE, and ultrastable long lifespan cycling. As coupled with LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811), the cell possesses a remarkably stable high capacity retention of 93% over 300 cycles at 0.2 C. Furthermore, the cells paired with a thick LiFePO4 (LFP) electrode (∼12 mg cm–2) still can deliver a superior cycling performance even under the harsh conditions of an extremely low negative/positive electrode capacity (N/P) ratio (∼1.5) and lean electrolyte. Density functional theory calculations are performed to disclose the mechanism of the enhanced electrochemical performance of Cu-CNF scaffolded Li. This work provides a handy and cost-effective method to design superior performance Li metal anodes for practical applications.

Metallic Li, with ultrahigh theoretical capacity (3860 mA h g −1 ) and the lowest electrochemical potential (−3.04 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode), is perfectly meet the needs of high energy density lithium batteries . However, the direct use of metallic lithium as anode would cause serious dendrite and huge volume expansion, which will bring safety hazards and restrict the practical commercialization of Li metal anodes . Herein, a facile electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method was employed for the first time to fabricate uniform TiN modified commercial Cu foam (TiN@Cu foam) as the lithiophilic 3D conductive skeleton. The lithiophilic TiN acts as the well-distributed seeds to promote the uniform lithium deposition, attributing to the lowed nucleation overpotential. The porous and conductive Cu foams can further mitigate the formation of Li dendrites, on account of its high specific surface area reduce the effective current density. The TiN@Cu foam based half cells and symmetric cells both exhibit improved reversibility and reduced polarization voltage in lithium plating/stripping process. Furthermore, better rate performance and cycling stability were also achieved in the full-cell configurations of TiN@Cu foam-Li/Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 (LTO) and TiN@Cu foam-Li/LiFePO 4 (LFP). This work demonstrates a facile strategy to modify the commercial current collectors with pre-synthesized lithiophilic nanoparticles for achieving uniform Li deposition.

Uncontrolled volume expansion with spiky lithium (Li) deposits is the major challenge for high-energy–density Li metal batteries to achieve long-term and safe cycling. The roughness or protrusion induced uneven electric field on the Li plating substrate is the main cause for the Li deposition heterogeneity. Lithiophilic sites are widely employed to guide Li deposition with high Li affinity, however also suffer from the restricted electrochemical regions by the uneven electric field for Li plating/stripping. Herein, a strategy of shielding the interfacial electric field to boost the functionality of lithiophilic sites is proposed beyond the single use of lithiophilic sites. A Janus composite of nanodiamond (ND) particles imbedded lithiophilic copper oxides (Cu x O) is used to decorate the Li deposition substrate. The evenly distributed ND particles play a critical role to readjust the electric field on the electrode surface, and in turn homogenize the conversion process of Cu x O sites to guide uniform Li deposition throughout the entire electrode surface. Consequently, the Li cyclability on the Cu x O/ND decorated electrode significantly outperforms those on bare or Cu x O decorated electrodes for practical cycling conditions, proving the designing principle of the shielded electric field-boosted lithiophilic sites interface for stable Li metal anodes.

Due to its high capacity and low density, lithium metal is considered as one of the most promising anodes for next-generation lithium batteries. However, the problems of dendrite and volume change are the main obstacles to limit its further development. Therefore, it is of great significance to realize the stable plating and stripping of lithium metal. The stability of lithium metal can be improved by compositing lithium with conductor materials, but the effect of conductor materials on lithium composite anode needs to be further studied. Herein, ionic or electronic conductor powders are introduced into the interior of lithium metal by hot-melt mixed coating method; Li/Cu, Li/Zn, and Li/Li 3 N composite anodes are prepared; and their electrochemical performances in solid and liquid batteries are studied. The results show that plating and stripping of lithium in composite anodes will take place preferentially around electronic or ionic conductor, rather than around lithium itself. For liquid batteries, the introduction of electronic conductor in lithium composite anode will make the electric field distribution more uniform and thus make the lithium deposition more stable, while the introduction of ionic conductor in composite anodes can improve the electrochemical stability of composite anodes in solid-state batteries. The capacity of the Li/Cu-LFP battery was 42.5 mAh g −1 after 500 cycles at 10 °C, corresponding to the 77% retention of its initial capacity.
