Lithium-iodine (Li-I2) batteries are promising candidates for next-generation electrochemical energy storage systems due to their high energy density and the excellent kinetic rates of I2 cathodes. However, dissolution of iodine and iodide has hindered their widespread adoption for practical applications. Herein, a Ti3C2Tx MXene foam with a three-dimensional hierarchical porous architecture is proposed as a cathode-electrolyte interface layer in Li-I2 batteries, enabling high-rate and ultrastable cycling performance at a high iodine content and loading mass. Theoretical calculations and empirical characterizations indicate that Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets with high metallic conductivity not only provide strong chemical binding with iodine species to suppress the shuttle effect but also facilitate fast redox reactions during cell cycling. As a result, the Li-I2 battery using a cathode with 70 wt % I2 cycled stably for over 1000 cycles at a rate of 2 C, even at an ultrahigh loading mass of 5.2 mg cm–2. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is the highest reported loading at such a high iodine content. This work suggests that using a Ti3C2Tx MXene interface layer can enable the design and application of high-energy Li-I2 batteries.

Rechargeable Li||I 2 batteries based on liquid organic electrolytes suffer from pronounced polyiodides shuttling and safety concerns, which can be potentially tackled by the use of solid-state electrolytes. However, current all-solid-state Li||I 2 batteries only demonstrate limited capacity based on a two-electron I − /I 2 polyiodides chemistry at elevated temperatures, preventing them from rivaling state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we report a fast, stable and high-capacity four-electron solid-conversion I − /I 2 /I + chemistry in all-solid-state Li||I 2 batteries at room temperature. Through the strategic use of a highly conductive, chlorine-rich solid electrolyte Li 4.2 InCl 7.2 as the catholyte, we effectively activate the I 2 /I + redox couple. This activation is achieved through a robust I-Cl interhalogen interaction between I 2 and the catholyte, facilitated by an interface-mediated heterogeneous oxidation mechanism. Moreover, apart from serving as Li-ion conduction pathway, the Li 4.2 InCl 7.2 catholyte is demonstrated to show a reversible redox behavior and contribute to the electrode capacity without compromising its conductivity. Based on the I − /I 2 /I + four-electron chemistry, the as-designed all-solid-state Li||I 2 batteries deliver a high specific capacity of 449 mAh g -1 at 44 mA g -1 based on I 2 mass and an impressive cycling stability over 600 cycles with a capacity retention of 91% at 440 mA g -1 and at 25 °C.

Rechargeable Li-I 2 battery has attracted considerable attentions due to its high theoretical capacity, low cost and environment-friendliness. Dissolution of polyiodides are required to facilitate the electrochemical redox reaction of the I 2 cathode, which would lead to a harmful shuttle effect. All-solid-state Li-I 2 battery totally avoids the polyiodides shuttle in a liquid system. However, the insoluble discharge product at the conventional solid interface results in a sluggish electrochemical reaction and poor rechargeability. In this work, by adopting a well-designed hybrid electrolyte composed of a dispersion layer and a blocking layer, we successfully promote a new polyiodides chemistry and localize the polyiodides dissolution within a limited space near the cathode. Owing to this confined dissolution strategy, a rechargeable and highly reversible all-solid-state Li-I 2 battery is demonstrated and shows a long-term life of over 9000 cycles at 1C with a capacity retention of 84.1%.

Li−I 2 batteries have attracted much interest due to their high capacity, exceptional rate performance, and low cost. Even so, the problems of unstable Li anode/electrolyte interface and severe polyiodide shuttle in Li−I 2 batteries need to be tackled. Herein, the interfacial reactions on the Li anode and I 2 cathode have been effectively optimized by employing a well-designed gel polymer electrolyte strengthened by cross-linked Ti–O/Si–O (GPETS). The interpenetrating network-reinforced GPETS with high ionic conductivity (1.88 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at 25°C) and high mechanical strength endows uniform Li deposition/stripping over 1800 h (at 1.0 mA cm −2 , with a plating capacity of 3.0 mAh cm −2 ). Moreover, the GPETS abundant in surface hydroxyls is capable of capturing soluble polyiodides at the interface and accelerating their conversion kinetics, thus synergistically mitigating the shuttle effect. Benefiting from these properties, the use of GPETS results in a high capacity of 207 mAh g −1 (1 C) and an ultra-low fading rate of 0.013% per cycle over 2000 cycles (5 C). The current study provides new insights into advanced electrolytes for Li−I 2 batteries.
