The quasi-solid-state electrolytes (QSSEs) with an inorganic skeleton, a solid–liquid composite material combining their respective merits, exhibit high ionic conductivity and mechanical strength. However, most quasi-solid electrolytes prepared by immobilizing ionic liquid (IL) or organic liquid electrolyte in inorganic scaffold generally have poor interface compatibility and low lithium ion migration number, which limits its application. Herein, we design and prepare a ZIF-8-based QSSE (ZIF-8 QSSE) in which the ZIF-8 has a special cage structure and interaction with the guest electrolyte to form a composite electrolyte with good ionic conductivity about 1.05 × 10–4 S cm–1 and a higher lithium-ion transference number of about 0.52. With the ZIF-8 QSSE, a protype lithium battery coupled with LiCoO2 cathode shows good electrochemical performances with an initial discharge capacity of 135 mAh g–1 at 50 mA g–1 and a remaining capacity of 119 mAh g–1 after 100 cycles, only 0.119% capacity degradation per cycle. It is worth noting that the ZIF-8-based QSSEs have good thermal stability up to 350 °C that does not show thermal runaway, which is significantly higher than that of a conventional organic liquid battery system.

Poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with excellent solvating capacity toward lithium salts and easy processable feature is considered as the promising polymer electrolyte matrix for energy storage devices. However, the poor capacity and cycling performances of PEO-based batteries resulted from weak mechanical strength and electrochemical properties greatly limit its development. Herein, chiral polyurethane (HPU) with a unique helical configuration is integrated into PEO, and a well-defined microphase separation architecture is induced in the resulted PEO@HPU hybrid. Besides the decreased crystallinity of PEO, the well-organized ordered and disordered microphase structure provides a “green channel” for Li+ transfer, contributing to a record lithium ion transference number of 0.43 for PEO-based dual-ion conductors. The mechanical strength and dimensional stability of PEO are significantly improved by the introduction of rigid helical segments and intermolecular hydrogen bondings. The electrochemical window and the ionic conductivity of the PEO@HPU hybrid are 5.0 V (vs Li+/Li) and 4.92 × 10–5 S cm–1 (60 °C), respectively. By synergism of the decreased crystallinity and microphase separation, the LiFePO4/Li cell assembled with the optimized PEO@HPU presents a high discharge capacity of 153 mA h g–1 at 0.1 C, and the capacity retention ratio is 83.6% after the 80th cycle with a Coulombic efficiency of approximately 99%. The growth of lithium dendrites is effectively inhibited, and the improved interfacial compatibility between PEO@HPU and the Li metal electrode also plays a crucial role. The introduction of a helical structure and the induced microphase separation may provide a new strategy for developing advanced solid-state polymer electrolytes for practical applications.

Solid-state polymer electrolytes (SPEs) possess conspicuous merits of facile manufacturing, superior mechanical toughness, and favorable chemical stability with Li anodes, but the intrinsically low room temperature ionic conductivity (∼10 −8 −10 −6 S cm −1 ) and negligible Lithium-ion transfer number (0.1–0.2) badly inhibited its commercial application in lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Herein, we design the three-dimensionally and coaxially MXene-confined solid-state polymer electrolyte (C-MX SPE) for the directional acceleration movement of Li + ion by introducing MXene nanosheets into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fiber. Benefiting from the confinement effect , the homogeneously and coaxially MXene-confined SPE possess an impressive Li + ion transference number of 0.72 and ionic conductivity of 3.07 × 10 −3 S cm −1 at room temperature, which are 3 and 20 times of magnitude higher than the randomly MXene-dispersed (R-MX) SPE (0.22 and 1.61 ×10 −4 S cm −1 ), respectively. Also, the Lithium/SPE/Lithium symmetric cell exhibits a flat galvanostatic charge/discharge under 1 mA cm −2 for 2000 h without dendrites, revealing its 3D skeleton structure could mechanically suppress Li dendrite growth. Based on it, the assembled flexible solid-state lithium metal batteries (SSLMBs) possess a rate-capability of 101 mAh g −1 @ 10 C, a capacity retention of 85.18% after 500 cycles @ 1 C at room temperature and a stability of bending-needling-cutting performance. Evidently, this three-dimensionally and coaxially MXene-confined SPE may represent a promising strategy to address the random distribution and agglomeration of inorganic fillers in SPE and guide a direction for the development of high-performance, secure, and flexible SSLMBs.

Lithium dendrites are a major issue that restrict the commercialization of lithium metal batteries. It is well-accepted that lithium dendrite nucleation can be suppressed by improving the Li+ transference number based on the classical Sand's time principle. Here, a self-standing anionic metal–organic framework (MOF)-based functional separator with small pores is developed by simple doctor-blading to accelerate Li+ transport for an improved lithium metal anode. The design of this separator is based on the nano-confined channels of the MOF and negatively charged moieties (–SO3−) on the surface. Benefiting from the strong electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged nanochannels and ions within the liquid electrolyte, the anion transport is effectively suppressed, while the lithium-ion transmission is accelerated. Consequently, a high Li+ transference number of up to 0.85 is achieved within the liquid electrolyte, which enables ultra-stable Li plating/stripping on the lithium metal anode for over 4000 h at a high current density of 5 mA cm−2. This work is expected to provide new insight into the development of dendrite-free and high-rate lithium metal batteries.

In response to the safety performance of liquid electrolytes in traditional lithium-ion batteries, we have prepared a new type of polymer electrolyte. In this paper, PVDF is used as the polymer electrolyte matrix, bio-based filler soybean protein isolate (SPI), and inorganic filler montmorillonite (MMT) as additional groups. In addition, the effects of the addition of soybean protein isolate (SPI) and montmorillonite (MMT) on the polymer electrolyte ion conductivity, lithium ion migration number, and electrode interface performance were investigated. After the test, it was found that the polymer electrolyte membrane with MMT and SPI had an ion conductivity of 2.56 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at room temperature, an electrochemical stability window of 5.1 V, and a Li + transfer number of 0.77. When assembling Li/LiTFSI-MMT-SPI-PVDF/Li batteries, the symmetric battery has a stable electrode interface because it can circulate stably for more than 100 h at a very small polarization voltage. The use of solid electrolytes can fundamentally change energy storage systems due to their higher safety and energy density. Herein, we design hydrogen-bonded polyethylene oxide (PEO) composite solid electrolytes (CSEs), which are hydrolyzed by tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in alkaline solution to form SiO2 with rich hydroxyl groups on its surface. This in situ formed SiO2 can not only reduce the crystallinity of PEO and increase the ionic conductivity (1.8 × 10−4 S cm−1 at 30 °C), but also adsorb anions so as to increase the lithium-ion transference number (tLi+ = 0.42). More importantly, hydrogen bonding can be formed with PEO, LITFSI and succinonitrile to form an interconnected network to improve the mechanical strength (Young's modulus = 0.72 GPa). In addition, we avoid the poor film formability and low mechanical strength by adjusting the ratio of EO : Li to 30 : 1 to reduce the content of lithium salt in the CSEs. Due to the high mechanical strength, the critical current density of lithium symmetrical batteries is as high as 1.4 mA cm−2. Using this CSE, a solid state LiFePO4‖Li battery delivers a high discharge capacity of 161.2 mA h g−1 at 0.5C with a capacity retention of 88% after 400 cycles at 30 °C. The in situ formed highly dispersed SiO2 reinforced PEO with abundant hydrogen bonds enables high performance of solid-state lithium batteries at room temperature.

The application of high voltage cathode electrode materials is an effective way to increase the energy density of batteries. However, the development and design of a stable electrolyte at high voltages needs to be further addressed. Herein, we developed a non-flammable dual-salt deep eutectic solvent (DES) as a safe electrolyte containing LiTFSI, LiDFOB, and succinonitrile in different molar ratios. This non-flammable DES provides high ionic conductivity (4.23 mS cm−1) at 25 °C, high Li+transference number (0.75), and wide electrochemical stability (>5.5 V). When using the designed DES electrolytes in high voltage LiCoO2||Li cells, superior electrochemical performance was achieved at cut-off voltages of 3.0–4.45 V and 3.0–4.6 V, even at a high current density of 2 C. This work offers an in-depth understanding of the critical role of dual-salts in DES and provides an approach to designing safe electrolytes for high voltage LiCoO2||Li cells.Keywords:non-flammable;high Li+transference number;deep eutectic solvent;high voltage LCO;lithium metal battery

A new polymeric ionic liquid (PIL), poly(1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium) bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (PVyMIM-FSI), has been prepared by polymerization of the monomer of ionic liquids, 1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (VyMIM-FSI). Its structure and composition have been characterized by 1 H and 19 F NMR, and viscosity-average molecular weight ( M v ). For comparison, the corresponding PIL, poly(1-vinyl-3-methylimidazolium) bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (PVyMIM-TFSI), is also prepared and characterized. The physicochemical properties of the binary composite electrolytes of lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI)/PVyMIM-FSI with various concentrations of LiFSI have been comparatively studied with those of the corresponding lithium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI)/PVyMIM-TFSI system, in terms of DSC , TGA , ionic conductivity , and lithium ion transference number ( t Li + ). Both the FSI − - and TFSI − -based PILs are thermally stable up to 250 °C. While both types of the prepared PILs show a significant decrease in glass transition temperature ( T g ) upon addition of lithium salt, the values of T g for the composite electrolytes of LiFSI/PVyMIM-FSI are all significantly lower by 20–60 °C in magnitude than those of the corresponding LiTFSI/PVyMIM-TFSI composite ones, indicating much better plasticizing effect for FSI − vs. TFSI − . The ionic conductivities of LiFSI/PVyMIM-FSI are all higher by about 2 orders in magnitude than those of the corresponding LiTFSI/PVyMIM-TFSI with the same concentration of lithium ions.

PEO-based solid electrolytes have attracted great attentions and made rapid development in the fields of lithium ion batteries, however its low ionic conductivity and low lithium ion transference number at ambient temperature prevent its practical applications. Herein we report a novel freestanding crosslinked ionic copolymer solid electrolytes fabricated via cross-linking polytetramethylene ether glycol with 1-vinyl-3-butylimidazole bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquid. Polytetramethylene ether glycol is chosen to build polymer matrix owing to their loose coordination with lithium ions and vinyl imidazolium ionic liquids provide ionic species. As expected, the novel electrolytes exhibit lithium-ion transference number ( t Li+ ) up to 0.47 at ambient temperature, good electrochemical stability up to 5.1 V and stable interface compatibility. Furthermore, the lithium ion batteries assembled with lithium anodes and LiFePO 4 cathodes exhibit good cycling performance and rate performance, delivering a good discharge capacity of 154.3 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 0.1C and an initial discharge capacity of 137.6 mAh g −1 at 0.5C with capacity retention of 92% after 100 cycles at ambient temperature.

Solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) have proved to be good alternatives to liquid electrolytes. However, their application is severely restricted by low ionic conductivity and poor mechanical strength. Here, NH2-MIL-125 metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are selected as additives to optimize the poly (ethylene oxide) (PEO)-based SPEs. Compared with PEO-LiTFSI electrolyte (PE), the prepared PEO-LiTFSI-10% NH2-MIL-125 MOF electrolyte (PEM10) not only enhanced the ionic conductivity (3.4 × 10−3 S cm−1 at 80 °C), but improved the stability of the electrochemical window and lithium-ion transference number (tLi+). The assembled Li/PEM10/LiFePO4 battery exhibited a specific discharge capacity of 162 mA h g−1 and superior rate capability of up to 1 C. The assembled Li/PEM10/Li battery showed a stable low-potential cycle for 600 hours at a current density of 0.1 mA cm−2. These results demonstrate that such a novel electrolyte membrane with excellent performance could be considered as a promising MOF-based SPE for all-solid-state batteries.

The application of PEO-based solid polymer electrolyte (SPE) is limited by the low ionic conductivity and lithium-ion transference number near room temperature . In this paper, a pendant polyether poly (EO- co -PCGE) (PECP) with low molecular weight is prepared by copolymerization of ethylene oxide (EO) monomer with typical lithium-ion conduction group and propylene carbonate glycidyl ether (PCGE) monomer with high dielectric group. By blended with PECP, the PEO-based SPE is obtained and its ionic conductivity can be increased to 3.54 × 10 −5 S cm −1 at room temperature and 1.32 × 10 −4 S cm −1 at 40 °C. In one aspect, the pendant structure and low molecular weight are beneficial to the reduction of the crystallinity of PEO matrix; in a further aspect, the cyclic carbonate pendant offers a competitive effect on segmental motion and the lithium-ion complexation of PEO , thus affecting the conduction mechanism of lithium-ions in the conventional PEO-based SPE and significantly increasing the lithium-ion transference number. The synergistic effect of these two aspects makes the prepared PEO-based SPE have excellent properties of ionic conduction especially at room temperature, and the LiFePO 4 /Li batteries with the SPE present excellent cycling performance at the temperature of 40 °C with a discharge capacity of about 100 mA h g −1 after 150 battery cycles.

Polyethylene oxide (PEO) electrolytes are widely used in lithium metal batteries (LMBs) due to their high safety and good flexibility. However, poor ion transport performance and interfacial stability limit its practical application. In this study, a covalent organic polymer (CPTP) was designed as a multifunctional material to be combined with PEO-based electrolytes for the preparation of a high-performance solid polymer electrolyte. The addition of CPTP promotes the dissociation of lithium salt through the C=N sites in the structure, and reduces the crystallinity of PEO to provides additional lithium transport pathways, thus enhancing the kinetics of lithium ion migration. More importantly, CPTP significantly enhances the interfacial stability of PEO/CPTP composite electrolyte/Li anode, promoting the formation of a stable SEI layer on the surface of the lithium metal electrode. The PEO/CPTP electrolyte has a lithium ion migration number of 0.59, and the Li//PEO/CPTP//Li batteries can stably operate for more than 1000 h with a polarization voltage of less than 0.2 mV. The fabricated all-solid-state Li//PEO/CPTP//LiFePO 4 lithium metal batteries can run 300 cycles with 81 % capacity reservation at 0.2 C, which could ascribe to the regulat phase stability in lithium metal batteries.
