The commercial application of lithium-sulfur batteries has been delayed due to problems associated with the Li metal anodes. This work fabricated a β-LiAl+α-Al composite alloy anode by electrodeposition, and investigated the following three aspects: safety, LiAl||Li half-cell performance and LiAl||Sulfur full-cell performance. Diffusional lithium trapping enabled the electrode to withstand water immersion without undergoing complete reaction. There was growth of flat LiAl mounds during cycling in both cell types attributed to lithium diffusion in the LiAl electrodes, leading to the improved stability. The shifted working voltage in the LiAl||S full-cell was attributed to the higher electrode potential of LiAl, which did not affect the reaction pathway of the Li-S battery. These unexpected aspects could offer valuable guidance for future investigations into anodes with similar mechanisms of lithium storage through diffusion.

Compared to lithium (Li) anode, the alloy/Li-alloy anodes show more compatible with sulfide solid electrolytes (SSEs), and are promising candidates for practical SSE-based all-solid-state Li batteries (ASSLBs). In this work, a porous Li–Al alloy (LiAl-p) anode is crafted using a straightforward mechanical pressing method. Various characterizations confirm the porous nature of such anode, as well as rich oxygen species on its surface. To the best knowledge, such LiAl-p anode demonstrates the best room temperature cell performance in comparison with reported Li and alloy/Li-alloy anodes in SSE-based ASSLBs. For example, the LiAl-p symmetric cells deliver a record critical current density of 6.0 mA cm −2 and an ultralong cycling of 5000 h; the LiAl-p|LiNi 0.8 Co 0.1 Mn 0.1 O 2 full cells achieve a high areal capacity of 11.9 mAh cm −2 and excellent durability of 1800 cycles. Further in situ and ex situ experiments reveal that the porous structure can accommodate volume changes of LiAl-p and ensure its integrity during cycling; and moreover, a robust Li inorganics-rich solid electrolyte interphase can be formed originated from the reaction between SSE and surface oxygen species of LiAl-p. This study offers inspiration for designing high-performance alloy anodes by focusing on designing special architecture to alleviate volume change and constructing stable interphase.

The practical application of rechargeable lithium metal batteries is limited by inhomogeneous lithium deposition and infinite side reactions. In practical scenarios, the temperature of the battery increases, which may aggravate side reactions and decrease the battery efficiency significantly. Herein, we report a unique lithium thermal reduction method for producing lithium-rich alloys from metal ethoxides. The uniformly distributed nanoscale Li–Al alloy in Li metal anodes can induce the uniform deposition of lithium metal and effectively inhibit side reactions. Therefore, the lithium rich alloy anode presents extremely low overpotential (5 mV) and cycles for 1000 h with no short circuit at the range of 30–60 °C under 0.5 mA cm −2 and 1 mAh cm −2 . When the anode is coupled with a commercial high loading LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode (8.8 mg cm −2 ), a capacity retention of 72% is obtained after 490 cycles at 30 °C. Furthermore, the cell matched with a higher mass loading LiNi 0.6 Co 0.2 Mn 0.2 O 2 cathode (21.6 mg cm −2 ) maintained a high coulombic efficiency of 99.5% and a stable cycle for 300 h at 60 °C.

The demand for high energy density and safety has significantly promoted the development of all-solid-state lithium metal batteries. However, their practical use has been limited by the solid-solid interface and thermodynamic stability between lithium metal and solid electrolytes (SEs). Here, we constructed a hybrid interface via a thermal welding strategy to achieve stable cycling. Specifically, a dense and robust AlF 3 interface layer was constructed on the surface of the lithium metal via pressing and heat treatment. The lithiation products Li-Al alloy and LiF can effectively improve the interface contact and inhibit the growth of lithium dendrites. As a result, the critical current density (CCD) of the Li/Li symmetric cell significantly improved from 0.8 to 3.3 mA cm −2 , and the cycling life was dramatically increased to 6000 h at a high current density of 0.4 mA cm −2 . Moreover, the hybrid interface enabled stable cycling of both Li/Li symmetric and LiNi 0.6 Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 O 2 /Li cells even at high current densities. The modified layer material had been diversified to SnF 2 , ZnF 2 , and MgF 2 , thus supporting the general concept of thermal activation strategy. Such a design can be extended to other solid-state devices for better functioning and extended cycle life.
